PRODUCTION PIECES

The Jackson College Heritage Center

began 10 years ago when one of our professors, Diana Agy, began teaching at Jackson

College. Early on, she understood that our students and community desired to know about

their heritage. Professor Agy felt that many viewed themselves as ‘forgotten’ and invisible.

The Jackson College Heritage Center participants learn the importance of contributing to

something greater than themselves – something for the greater good.

2018 Governor’s Service Learning Award Winner

Students are strictly volunteers in the Heritage Center’s work. They receive no grade.

Each student donates whatever time he or she has to the work. Most carry a heavy class

load and also work one or two jobs. Yet they still come weekly. They are devoted,

dedicated, and consistent.

Collectively over the past 10 years, participants in the Heritage Center projects have

contributed well over 18,000 volunteer hours.

Please follow us on Facebook at Jackson College Heritage Center. If you have questions or wish to share your story, please contactDiana Agy at [email protected]

Would you like to further these exciting opportunities for students bydonating to the Jackson College Heritage Center Scholarship Fund?

I am interested in donating to help continue the fine work of the Jackson College Heritage Center.

Dawn Foods Foundation provides $30,000 grant to Potter Center projectJune 21, 2018

JACKSON, Mich. – Jackson College today announced a new $30,000 grant from the Dawn Foods Foundation. The grant will be used toward the refurbishment of Harold Sheffer Music Hall, the second of a three-phase renovation project on the 42-year-old performing arts complex.

“We are incredibly thankful to Sarah Richmond and everyone at the Dawn Foods Foundation for helping make this grant possible,” said Jennifer Brooket, associate vice president of the Jackson College Foundation. “Their generous support, along with our community, alumni and friends, allows us to continue producing first-rate entertainment in a state-of-the-art environment.”

Dawn Foods has long supported the College through sponsorships, scholarship support or gifts-in-kind. This $30,000 grant marks the first and largest gift from the Dawn Foods Foundation. Richmond, president of the Dawn Foods Foundation, was inspired upon first learning about the Sheffer project and encouraged the Jackson College Foundation to submit a request, which its board approved.

“The Potter Center is used by thousands of people from Jackson County as well as all over Michigan – it’s a big draw for entertainment and generates revenue for the College and also the greater Jackson community,” said Richmond. “Dawn Foods is committed to serving and improving the communities our team members call home. From volunteering our time and talents to providing financial support, the Dawn Foods Foundation invests in the communities where we are located. We’re honored to help restore the Potter Center in our hometown of Jackson and believe this grant is truly an investment in the community.”

Renovations to Sheffer Music Hall will include new seating and carpeting, handrail system, curtains and aesthetic improvements. The first phase of Potter Center renovations included the first and second-floor theater lobbies, grand stairway and mezzanine and was completed in fall 2017. The third phase will include renovation to the Michael Baughman Theatre. The Potter Center was first built in 1976, with the Harold Sheffer Music Hall completed in 1980.

Cindy Allen recognized for leadership by Michigan ACE Women’s NetworkJune 12, 2018

Cindy Allen has dedicated much of her life to Jackson College. Her commitment was recognized by the 2018 Michigan American Council on Education (ACE) Women’s Network Distinguished Women in Higher Education Award.

Allen began working with the performing arts at the College in 1980, when she was still a student. Over the years, her position has grown in responsibility as she continued working on her education. She currently serves as vice president of administration and talent development and was instrumental in the founding of a Campus Health Clinic and spearheaded the creation of the Oasis Center, which provides behavioral health services. She also oversees human resources, marketing and communications, security and safety, dining and food services, external partnership with the community and four-year universities and more.

President Daniel Phelan called Allen an “inspirational role model for women seeking to advance their careers in leadership positions.”

While Cindy is much more comfortable behind the scenes, she acknowledges, “Some of the most rewarding work I have done involves mentoring young women (and some men) and watching them grow and gain the knowledge and confidence to advance in this great organization. I love being part of an institution that inspires and changes lives while providing leadership and support to the communities that we serve. This College and the team of talented individuals I work with every day are making a huge difference.”

Presented by the Michigan ACE Women’s Network, the award honors women who have distinguished themselves by providing outstanding leadership to women in their institutions, in their profession and in society at large. The awards were presented June 5 at the annual conference in Lansing.

Allen lives in the Western School District with her husband, Bill. They have three children and one grandchild._________________________________
