Mojo Magazine Analysis- Front Cover

The use of a runner informs and ‘teases’ the readers of what is in the magazine making them want to read it. For example, this says ‘Exclusive! The Only Interview’. This makes the readers think that this is the only opportunity they have to read this making them more likely to buy it.

Although this is a 2012 magazine, the black and white dominant image cooperates into the main story which is ‘Steve Marriott- The Rise and Fall of Rock’s Greatest Singer’ . This makes the magazine look vintage which is suitable as the singer was part of a 60’s rock band.

The front cover follows an orange, blue, green and white colour scheme which is the same scheme as the Small Faces C.D they are giving away as a ‘freebie’. This makes the magazine look professional and of a high standard as it is controlled and organised.

The white title stands out against the black background making it more eye-catching to the target audience making them more likely to pick it up and buy it.

‘The Music Magazine’ has been made to look like it has been written. This personalises the magazine and makes it look authentic which cooperates with the cover design.

The use of anchorage is down the side of the cover and is not over-lapping the image too much. This is because the image is important to the main story the magazine is publishing. The font of the text is very simple and clear to read meaning the audience is more bothered about what it says.

The style of communication is serious but also intriguing. For example, ‘reunited’ and ‘reborn’ would draw a reader in as they want to know why and when.

Mojo Magazine Analysis- Contents Page

The date and issue number has been put onto the contents page to inform the reader. This is also useful to those who are subscribed to the magazine or collect them as they are aware of which issue they own. This is conventional to a standard magazine layout.

The layout has been divided under sub-headings. For example, ‘Features’ and ‘Cover Story’. This makes it clearer for the audience to read as they are able to find what they looking for quickly and easily. This also adds order to the page making it look organised.

The use of a quote draws the reader in as they have been given an insight into the article making them want to read the rest of it.

The use of a dominant image makes the contents page look sophisticated rather than various smaller images ‘dotted around’. The contents page follows a basic design as does the design of the front cover such as the white, black and red colour scheme. The image is black and white making it look like it belongs in the 60’s time era which the band (The Who) was formed in.

The use of black and white imaging is conventional to Mojo Magazine as they are a ‘classic rock’ genre.

Rolling Stone Magazine Analysis- Front Cover

As ‘ONE’ is bigger in text, this catches the readers eye and shows that it is a big deal. It also represents their status as the ‘hottest’ band and you cannot replace them- there is only one

The use of the stamp adds creativity and design to the front cover making it stand out against the others on the shelf. As it is on about a singer of the Guns N’ Roses band returning, the use of this been written on a stamp implies that it is last minute but also fast happening as though the readers are the first ones to know.

As the dominant image is the only image on the front cover, it suggests that this issue is exclusive. We also get this from the anchorage, for example, ‘The World’s Hottest Band’ and ‘The Inside Stories’. The image covers most of the title showing importance and implies that the band is bigger and more popular than the magazine itself.

The cover follows a colour scheme which incorporates with the colour of the bands clothing and hair; black and white. The ‘Rolling Stone’ logo is in it’s original form (font and colour) which implies that this is a classic Rolling Stone issue.

Rolling Stone Magazine Analysis- Contents Page

The page has been split up into clear divisions: title, images and contents. Within the contents there are sub-headings: Features, National Affairs and Departments. This gives the readers a clear navigation system that will help them in finding the article they want to read. The images also have page numbers written on them. This again adds ease and simplicity. Under the contents title, it shows the date of the issue giving information to possible subscribers.

Towards the bottom of the page, it gives information of the photo used on the front cover. This gives readers additional information, especially those who are fans of the artist presented.

The colour scheme is the classic ‘Rolling Stone’ red, black and white. The font used is easy to read yet adds formality to the page which fits in with the article about Barrack Obama. The information given under this article uses a different style of communication and vocabulary as opposed to the others on the page. For example, it says ‘Three political experts debate’. This is formal and correct. However, the article about ‘Foreclosures: Invasions of the Home Snatchers uses language such as ‘screw over’.

Rolling Stone Magazine Analysis- Article

The language used in the article is witty and informal, for example, the title: ‘In Your Dreams’. This suggests that the article is fun but also has a double meaning which incorporates with what the article is about; a gay dating show.

The images are in black and white adding a vintage look to the already old-fashioned based images which show men in drag and sitting on authentic furniture. This shows us that the article is aimed at an older audience as it looks as though it belongs in different era such as the 60’s/70’s.

The font used isn't simple however, isn't difficult to read showing that the appearance of the article is not as important as the content. This font adds an individual style to the article. However, the simple colour scheme adds a cultured feel which aims at an older audience as they are unlikely to be bothered what it looks like and more interested in what it is about.

The page has been split into 4 columns and 2 rows making the page layout guided and organised which appeals to an older audience as they will want to read the article with ease.

The title is white to incorporate into the black and white image making it stand out against the background which is mainly grey.

‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ is the name of an ACDC song in which they sing all about Rosie. For those who are fans of ACDC, they will be familiar with the song and realise that this magazine is all about ACDC hence ‘Whole Lotta’.

Classic Rock Magazine Analysis- Front Page

‘4 Free Gifts’ is in yellow and is the only text in yellow on the whole page making it noticeable and more persuasive to its audience to buy it.

The magazine has used the ACDC lightening bolt logo within its design showing that this issue is committed to ACDC.

The dominant image camera shot is a mid shot so that all the members of the band are see. However, the members with the most authority or more well known are in the foreground.

Instead of using the same font as ‘Whole Lotta’ was written in, the magazine has used ACDC’S actually band logo to add a sense of professionalism and familiarity to the front cover that will draw the reader in.
