A Snippet from the Past
Advice from a 1949 Singer Sewing Manual
Never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisical attitude. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with the sink full of dishes or bed unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so that your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.
When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Go through a beauty ritual of orderliness. Have on a clean dress. Be sure your hands are clean, finger nails smooth—a nail file and pumice will help. Always avoid hangnails. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near you sewing machine where you can pick it up and dust your fingers at intervals. This not only absorbs the moisture on your fingers, but helps to keep your work clean. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on with care. Looking attractive is a very important part of sewing, because if you are making something for yourself, you will try it on at intervals in front of your mirror, and you can hope for better results when you look your best. If you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should.
WOW—Have we come a long way.
Keep Smiling
Dianne

We use styrofoam cups from the church’s supply.
Vicki Bunker and Donna Beal will make sure supplies are available
on meeting days. Supplies provided are: coffee, sugar and

ALSO: At the end of the morning, please make sure the coffee pot is

Quilt Show Notes I read, as many of you probably have, the short bio on
Cindy Erickson in the Quilt Show catalog. Impressive
resume! Interior designer, clothing and wearable art
teacher, certified judge, and co-author of books and block
of the month (BOM) projects. Blah, blah, wow!
I learn better by seeing things, so I went to her
website, www.cindyerickson.com and was blown away
by the pictures of her BOM. Detailed and beautiful. I
know that pictures never truly do justice to the beauty of
quilts, so I plan on being in the front row of her
Saturday morning, Oct 17 sampler show at 11 a.m. Beat
you there!

Tip of the month
Here are two tips for removing fusible
web from your iron.
1. Place a paper towel or other paper on your ironing board. Then, iron over a fabric softener dryer sheet with a hot iron to dissolve and remove sticky residue.
2. After the iron has cooled, apply rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball and rub over the bottom of the iron. It not only removes the fusible glue, but leaves the iron surface clean and shiny.

Quilt Show Notes
Scraps, strips, slabs. These were some of the words
that were highlighted in a story online. Was this a story
about bacon – the currently popular food fad that nearly
every restaurant has tried to cash in on? Another word
caught my attention – gum drops. Maybe it was a story
about a candy factory?
Wrong on both counts. This was an article about Amanda
Jean Nyberg’s approach to quilting: using up every single
scrap no matter the size or shape.
Scraps? I’ve got boxes of them. But organized they’re not.
Amanda Jean has ideas on how to tame the scrap
monster in your closet. Her philosophy is to take the
scraps and sew them into strips, the strips into slabs,
and the slabs into blocks and eventually quilts. Sounds
like the gum drops are a certain type of strip.
If you save scraps from a project or two, you could learn a
thing or two from Amanda Jean Nyberg when she speaks
at the NSQG Quilt Show in October. So, scrap-savers and
lovers, buy your tickets soon.

Member Information A Note from the Editor
Gloriosky! What a difference a day makes. As August winds
down, hot Saturdays turn into cold Sundays (this is my favorite
time of year). My husband and I love to watch the neighbors
go by on bikes, skateboards or just walking dogs. They’re in T
shirts and flip flops on Saturday, but the next morning the dog
walkers are in jackets and tennis shoes. It’s a reminder of
how fast time goes by.
Time going fast means we’re speeding into the quilt show. Are
you ready? Do you have your quilts ready for judging, and the
projects done for the Bazaar and Silent Auction? If not, you
have a busy September ahead of you. Wouldn’t it be great if
everyone in the club made just one item to show or sell? I’m
feeling good because I have my projects finished. That just
means I should be working on something else, right? Well,
we’ll see. It’s never too late to start and if it doesn’t get done,
I can always save it for 2017.

Quilting on the Red
Quilt Show Reminders
Early Quilt Registration Deadline is September 18!
Remember that you can be entered into a drawing for a $50
gift certificate to a quilt show vendor of your choice if you
send in your quilt entry forms by September 18. Your
name goes into the drawing once for each quilt entry you
send in by the early deadline date. Drawings will be made
on October 3 at the guild meeting and you do not need to be
present to win.
The final deadline for quilt entries is October 3.
Advanced Admission and Reduced Price Lecture
Purchase Deadline is October 3.
October 3 is the deadline for advanced admission and
lecture tickets. That will be your last chance to get three
days of admission for the price of two and to save on the
price of each lecture. After October 3, tickets will only be
available at the door of the quilt show at the full price.
Gift Certificates for Quilt Show Admission Available
Gift certificates for quilt show admission will be available
for purchase at the September and October guild meetings.
You may purchase a one day admission for $5 and it will be
valid for any day the recipient chooses. This is a great way
to get people to the show who may not otherwise be able to
afford it or perhaps they just need a little incentive to get
there. Think about your non-quilting friends, relatives, co-
workers, neighbors - anyone you would like to specifically
invite to our show by gifting them with admission.
Boutique Reminder
It is not too late to get a boutique consignment number so
you can sell merchandise at the boutique! Look through
your books, patterns and magazines to sell (recycle!). You
still have time to make items to sell--think about anything
quilty, from potholders to quilts to pincushions. You may
also designate the Guild to receive the proceeds from your
items. See or call Jolene Mikkelson (218-791-2182) for a
boutique consignment number which is available to all
guild members, or if you have any questions.
Sign up to Volunteer
Various quilt show committee chairs will have volunteer
signup sheets at the September and October guild
meetings. Please consider how you could best help and
then commit by signing up! It takes all of us pulling
together to put on this wonderful quilt show and every bit
of help is greatly appreciated!
