Senior Pastor’s Letter

Dear Friends in Christ at King of Glory,

Our annual congregational meeting was held on Sunday January 29th. That annual meeting always serves as a stopping point for us. We pause in the life of our congregation to look back and remember what we’ve been able to accomplish together. Then we turn our attention to the future—to adopt a budget or a spending plan for the year, to anticipate all we’ll accomplish this year. It’s exciting to be part of a congregation that is growing, thriving, and seeking ways to play a prominent role in the Billings community.

In 2016 we worshipped together hearing God’s Word and receiving Christ’s gifts. We learned together. We served in many different ways. We gave generously to our Mission and our Ministry.

2016 will probably be remembered as the year we finished our new office wing. I marveled at how people came together, giving and serving, to get that needed project done. I’m still smiling at all that took place. Because of that we all have a strong sense of ownership in our church and great space for our church staff.

Thank you for your serving, your giving, your work, your investment in making King of Glory Lutheran Church what it is today.

But our pause is only temporary. We must turn to the future. We have a Mission and Ministry to do. We have people to serve. We continue to worship, learn, give and serve. 2017 is stacking up to be another good year for us.

Thanks for approving the 2017 Budget. That’s how we plan to use your generous contributions this year.

Thanks for electing new leaders to serve King of Glory. In a congregation as large as KOG many are needed to steward the life of our congregation.

Thanks to the Board of Directors for granting me a Sabbatical. During those 3 months away, I plan to return with our new “Playbook”—what we’ll work on and do to make our transition to a large congregation. You’ve heard me talk about that transition before and you’ll hear me talk about it again. That playbook can serve us well into the future as we seek to be God’s people gathered around the living Word who reach out with the good news of Jesus and seek to serve people in need.

Thanks be to God who has called us together to be this congregation called King of Glory. God has given us what and who we need to accomplish our Mission and our Ministry.

God bless you and keep you in his grace! Pastor Jim Darchuk

2 PastoralCareTeamMinistry

King of Glory has started a new ministry team to provide additional care of our homebound and hospitalized members. Caring well for our most fragile members is a high priority for us and we believe that in addition to regular visits by a pastor these members would value visits from

trained members of the congregation.

If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please speak with Pastor Ben Quanbeck. If you know

someone who would be blessed by a visit from this team, please speak with Pastor Ben.

The Pastoral Care team will make regular visits on the last Sunday of each month and as needed.

A Head’s Up—Lent begins Wednesday, March 1

The Lenten Season starts on Ash Wednesday, March 1. This year’s Lenten theme will be “Slogans for Life”. In this year, when we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we will make use of some of the great slogans in our Lutheran heritage.

Did you know that you are a saint (one who is forgiven by God) and yet you are a sinner at the very same time?

Did you realize you belong to “The Priesthood of All Believers”?

Have you heard Lutherans talk about the “Theology of the Cross”?

How well do you know “Justification by Faith” and “Justification of the Ungodly”?

Can you make the distinction between “Law and Gospel”?

We will explore these and other slogans that Lutherans use. You’ll want to set aside time each Wednesday evening 6:30-7 p.m. for our mid-week Lenten worship. You will be glad that you did!

And don’t forget the soup suppers prior to Wednesday worship.

New Member Sunday

New Member Sunday is February 26.

We will welcome our new members into the mission and ministry of King of Glory. There will be a cake recep-tion between services. Come, meet,

and welcome our new members.

A NOTE FROM OUR STEWARDSHIP CHAIR

To put it mildly, 2016 was a good year and to each of you we give our THANKS!

“Life Abundant” (our ongoing stewardship theme) surrounds us! We remember that stewardship is NOT JUST ABOUT MONEY, rather it involves returning to God ALL and MORE of what He has first shared with us: our lives, our talents, our resources, and yes, our money.

We are a church enjoying abundance in many and varied ways. Growing together we have:

**CHANGED an empty shell into a finished office space with most of the work accomplished by volunteers and entirely paid for through your donations! For that we give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters.

**WITNESSED our educational programs show increased participation resulting in the need to find new and innovative spaces to teach God’s word! For that we give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters.

**OFFERED unique ministry opportunities for us to gather in fellowship: membership classes, IF tables, men’s coffee, quilting, choir, youth and community projects including Family Promise con-tinue to see faithful support! For that we give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters.

**ATTRACTED more participation in our varied worship services including a steady attendance during the summer months! For that we give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters.

**ASSURED financial soundness. Bills, payroll, mortgages and all benevolence obligations have been met on a timely basis! For that we give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters.

**COMMITMENT to our ongoing financial needs in 2017 was shown in your pledges and ongo-ing generosity. For that we give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters.

2017 promises to be another exciting year for us. We look forward to your continued stewardship as we look to God for wisdom and guidance and FACE THE FUTURE BOLDLY!!

in the future to those who have already retired.

Evey has a wonderful presentation for us. You won’t want to miss this!

About our speaker: Evey LaMont M.S. has been the principal at Primetime Transition and Re-

clients reach their goals quickly and efficiently.

“Feast & Fellowship” for All Ages—Sign Up Now! What is Feast & Fellowship? Feast & Fellowship is an opportunity for all ages to gather with others from

our congregation to enjoy meals and fellowship together during March, April, and May. It is a great

way to meet people for the first time or to spend time with those you know already.

How does Feast & Fellowship work? Interested individuals, couples, and families sign-up by February 22.

Then each individual/couple/family is randomly assigned to 3 groups—one in March, one in April,

and one in May. Each group will have about 8 people—more if the group includes families. Each

group will have a different host each month; people host only once; people can indicate on the sign-

up sheet if they’d rather not be a host. The host decides on the meal—potluck or restaurant. If pot-

luck is chosen, the host provides the main dish; guests provide the bread/appetizer, salad, and dessert.

When do groups meet? Each group’s host helps his/her group decide on a meeting date and time for that

month. The host can choose evenings, weekends, or even Sunday brunch. Choosing the meeting date

and time can be done through phone calls, emails, or an online scheduling tool.

Where do groups meet? Meals can be held at the host’s home, the church (please check available dates

through the office), or a place of the host’s choosing. A host could even choose a restaurant with all

paying for their own meal. Restaurants such as Fuddruckers could be a choice for family groups.

If interested, please sign-up on the Information Wall in the Commons no later than FEB. 22.

"Nini, why are we putting beds in my Sunday School classroom" asked my four year old granddaughter. "Because a family needs to sleep here for a few nights" was the answer. "Do they have a baby?" she asked as we were setting up the travel crib. "Yes, they do." I could tell she was puz- zled. "Why don't they just go home?" Ah, the facts of life. Where do I start?

From a worldly perspective, war, famine and poverty are primary causes of homelessness. In the US, and at the most basic economic level, homelessness is caused by poverty and unemployment. The poor simply cannot afford adequate shelter. Domestic violence plays a role in homelessness as well.

Now, how to translate this to her level of un-derstanding. "Well your mommy has a job, and she earns money to pay for your house, and food and clothes. Some people don't have jobs, so they don't have a house. This is how we help them. We feed them and we make beds for them to sleep here. Then the mommies or daddies get jobs and can get a house for their family."

The next thing I know, our conversation changes direction to her imaginary friend Figaro (yes, she really did come up with that herself) and the fact that he is hungry for two cookies.

KOG hosts homeless families periodically throughout the year, and I have been privileged to help serve them. Joining with a cadre of others, we inflate air mattresses, make beds, buy groceries, fix and serve meals, and stay with them through the night.

The families are part of the Family Promise program which works with the parents through an intensive program that leads them out of their homeless situation.

Family Promise is a community of 26 Billings faith-based congregations, with over 1400 volunteers, that put their faith into action to pro-vide meals, shelter, and a safe, non-judgmental environment for these families. Our congrega-tion "hosts" take turns on a weekly rotating basis providing hospitality and basic needs to our homeless "guests."

With my two older granddaughters, I have prepared meals and we have joined our Family Promise guests for supper. The kids always con-nect instantly talking about school, doing activi-ties, or playing with the toddlers in our nursery.

Gary Aasheim is our KOG link to Family Promise, and the one who puts out the call for volunteers. If you have not yet been involved in this ministry, I would like to suggest that this is a great learning opportunity for us as parents and grandparents, to expose our KOG youth to the reality of homelessness in Billings. Volunteering in any capacity with the kids in your life is sure to provoke conversation, and is an opportunity for them to know how we live our KOG vision to welcome all, grow in grace, and serve in love.

Thanks to Cheryl Jones for sharing this story with us…..
