Manchester BCNH Meeting Notes

Prime Minister ’s Missive

September, the start of my favorite timeof year! The nights are cool, the dayshumidity free (mostly!), and the granddisplay of Mother Nature starts as theleaves begin to flame in red, yellow andorange. Speaking for myself, the fallcolors are the #1 reason I came back toNew England. I find there is nothing asexhilarating as a top down jaunt alongback country roads through forestsablaze with color. Of course the onsetof fall to some is a harbinger of wickedthings to come, shorter days, cold nights, and abundant snow. I-95 is alive withSnowbirds fleeing the winter for thesunny climes of Florida, leaving behindall those who are yet to retire to grumbleand complain as they wait desperatelyfor Spring to arrive. There are others, however, to which winter is not only wel-come, but embraced, those who marvelat the beauty of new fallen snow and hitthe slopes for first tracks, I know Kimand I can’t wait for the first snowfall ofthe year, our skis are sharpened, equip-ment checked and season passes inhand. Along those lines, Norm Michaels(another ski-bum!) and I were discuss-ing the possibility of forming a BCNHskiing group this winter. Since we both

have an aversion to skiing with weekendcrowds, our thought was a mid-weekmeeting date at Gunstock Mountainthroughout the winter, nothing formal, justmeet with whomever wishes or is able toski that day. The first step of course, is toascertain if there is any interest in theClub, so to that end, please let Norm ormyself know if you have any desire tomeet and ski this year. Should we get agood response, we can establish an emaillist so anyone who wishes to ski can justlet everybody else know what day theywill be at Gunstock (or any mountain inNew Hampshire for that matter) and in-terested parties can meet-up to ski. Ibelong to an informal group here in SouthDown (The Old Codgers Ski Club!) thatoperates on a similar basis and we usu-ally can get at least 4 or 5 folks to showup for first tracks; on some days after agood snowfall we can get as many as 10-15! Along with downhill, we can also in-clude X-Country skiing in the mix as Kimand I try to get out a few times to Nordicski throughout the winter.

So, all you skiers out there give us a shoutand we’ll get this ball rolling, ski seasonwill be upon us before you know it!!

The August BCNH Meeting was calledto order at 7:00 pm by Prime MinisterBob D. We started with acceptance ofthe treasurer’s report and the secretary’sreport. All passed (what a shocker).

There were 45 members in attendance.

We then went on to introduce the threenew members who attended the meet-ing.

Phil Farrar has a 1979 MGB and comesfrom Plaistow. David Mitchell is in theprocess of joining the club and is origi-nally from Leeds in the UK and he hasa 1980 MGB GT. Mike & Julia Mor-gan who are from Windham, they havea 1976 Jaguar XJ12.Welcome all!

Past events were discussed next. Upfirst was the Show of Dreams. We hada total of 213 cars registered and al-most 900 spectators. Yes, we countedthem. Moneys are being tallied and weexpect to have the total of our proceedssoon, we are just waiting for the finalbills to come in.

Also in the past was the drive to theKearsarge Indian Museum whichbrought out about 12 cars, just the right

size for a drive.

We also had about 13 cars registeredand displayed at the Vintage RacingStable in Sanbornton. This was organizedas a fund raiser for the Boys and GirlsClub by club member Nick Grewal. Ifyou get the chance to go next year it ishighly recommended. The cars on dis-play are terrific. Several members at-tended the Day of Triumph at Lars Ander-son the day after the Show of Dreams.

Upcoming events were discussed nextwith MG Rover Day at the Lars Ander-son Auto Museum, The Amherst LionsClub Car show, a drive to AldworthManor organized by the MonadnockCouncil and Ramona Branch.

British Invasion is coming up in Septem-ber as is the Kitzhof Inn weekend for theSpeckled Hen Run. Please sign up early!

We also talked about club officer elec-tions coming up. Many of those who arecurrently serving on the “monarchy”would love to have someone else pickup the tasks. If you would consider learn-ing the newsletter, treasury, prime minis-ter or secretary positions please comeforward.

The Flushingham Palace raffle was wonby new member Julia Hogan and believeit or not Mike pulled her ticket. He thendonated his $40 winning back to the fundso we now have $230 towards theFlushingham Palace fund for next year’sshow.

Just a reminder, the September meetingwill be on September 9th due to LaborDay being in the way of our meeting onthe first Monday. The nerve! Several ofus in the “monarchy” will not be at themeeting. We will be on a drive in Ireland.See you when we get back.

Seacoast Council Meeting Minutes

Blue Latitudes in Dover was the loca-tion for our August 14th meeting. Twentyone members arrived, including newmember Bob McCoy of Somersworthwho joined at the Show of Dreams andhas a 1965 MGB (we now have aplethora of Roberts, with three Bobs anda Rob at our table). After a social hourof good conversation, food and drink,Co-Minister Norm Michaels called themeeting to order at 7:00 pm, and wewent around the room with introductionsand discussions of what members hadbeen up to over the past month.

Bob Dougherty reported that a worri-some noise arose after he had put hun-dreds of miles on his now superchargedMG TD; a quick trip back to the repairshop took care of it. Bob Mitchell re-ported that the drive to the Mt.Kearsarge Indian Museum was a suc-cess; his newest favorite LBC drivingroad is now Route 127 from Plymouthto Warner. And the Vintage Racing StableConcours in Sanbornton, NH, was ashow of fabulous automotive iron.

Last month we had discussed looking foranother meeting location with more ad-equate parking. But meantime NormMichaels has been in touch with TDBank, close by, about using their lot;they’re reworking it now, but after it’sdone we may be granted access. Andthis month Dale Dean found us a lot onThird St., so further talk of finding an-other location was postponed.

Upcoming events include MG/RoverDay at the Larz Anderson Museum inBrookline, MA, on August 17th, and onthe 18th groups from different councilswill wend their way to the historicAldworth Manor in Harrisville, NH.Wings and Wheels is an event on 8/25at the Sugarbush Airport in Warren, VT.The British Invasion of Stowe, VT, hap-

pens on Sept.13-15, and the SpeckledHen Run event will be at the Kitzhof Innin W. Dover, VT on Sept.27-29.

The luxurious loo raffle produced $70and Rob Gardner donated his winningsback to the fund (wait a minute, didn’tLesley Gardner win last month? They’rekeeping it in the family). In lieu of the cashhe took home a Jaguar book by LordMontagu of Beaulieu. Our next meetingwill be at Blue Latitudes on September11th. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 pm.

Ben Morong, Secretary

Northern Council Gathering

On Thursday, August 15th, about adozen members met at Karl and Kellie’shouse in Hebron, NH, around 5:00pm.We visited, shared car stories and dis-cussed some of Karl’s never-endingprojects.

We headed out for a nice warm eveningdrive to Sculptured Rocks in Groton, NHwith smooth roads until we got closer toour destination. Once on the back roadit became more like a mini obstaclecourse avoiding some of the potholes dueto the last, very heavy rainfall which cre-ated some decent sized humps andbumps in the road. We arrived at Sculp-tured Rocks, also known as the “LittleGrand Canyon of New Hampshire”around 5:45pm. Sculptured Rocks maynot look like much at first but as you getcloser to the very old footbridge span-ning the river you know that MotherNature is a force to be reckoned with. This State Park site covers 272 acres offorested land but the main draw is theriver bed and the rocks that have beencarved smooth by the CockermouthRiver as it makes its way to Newfound

Lake. There are deep pools and crev-ices, even a spot in the rocks with anunderwater tunnel that a brave adven-turer can swim through to the other side.A few members climbed down the rocksto get a closer view. You always wantto be aware of the slippery rocks, treeroot outcroppings and acorns.

We then piled back into our mostly Brit-ish cars and headed over to theBridgewater Inn, known to the locals asthe BINN. We met up with several moreBCNH members and that brought ourhead count up to 17. They were waitingfor us out on the back porch area whichwas perfect for our rather boisterousgroup. We could swap stories aboutcars, family and friends and our amazingsummer adventures without worryingabout the other dinners.

Unfortunately, we all decided summer ismuch too short but the drives in our rearview mirror have been amazing with stillmore events to come; just check outthe BCNH calendar!!

We will be back at the Homestead Res-taurant in Bristol, NH for our Septem-ber 19th meeting, always the third Thurs-day of the month. We meet around 6:00pm for dinner and libation and start themeeting at 7:00 pm sharp, knock-offhammer for sure.

Have to say July’s and August’s desti-nation gatherings have been a lot of fun, will have to look ahead to next summerand build on this momentum.

Respectfully submitted by:

Karl & Kellie

British Sunday Afternoon at the Aldwor th Manor

It was a wonderful day for a drivethrough some of the nicest roads in NewHampshire to a hidden New Hampshiretreasure, The Aldworth Manor. BobMitchell planned a drive starting at His-

toric Motor Sports in Candia, NH. withseveral stops to pick up BCNH mem-bers to wind our way through the twistycanopied byways to Harrisville, NH.Some less vigilant British car driversmissed a turn and had to resort to ourGPS to find the stately manor. Around31 LBC’s arrived at the AldworthManor that sits the top of a hill with spec-tacular views of Mount Monadnockand surrounding landscapes. Iced tea, lemonade and some adult beveragesmay have been consumed along with

various salads and sandwiches and per-haps a dessert or two. A contentiousround of full contact croquet was formedand enjoyed as others toured the manorhouse and flower festooned grounds de-signed to attract butterflies and bees.

The wonderful event was all planned andmade possible by Ramona Branch;,thank you for planning this event, we allenjoyed it categorically.

Day of Triumph

For those Triumph owners who havenever attended the New England Tri-umphs, Day of Triumph, this is one showyou should consider attending. ForBCNH members, it would require twocar shows in two days, but, it is cer-tainly doable.

We decided to attend DOT this yearbecause we planned to stay inLondonderry for the Show of Dreamsweekend. That gave us the opportunityto cut the driving time to Larz Ander-son Auto Museum by one hour.

The journey started at 8:00 am arrivingin Brookline, MA by 9:30 am.

The Larz Anderson Auto Museumgrounds provide a wonderful venue forDay of Triumph which includes thechance to tour this spectacular museumwhich showcases automotive historyfrom day one to present day.

When we arrived at Larz Anderson, thefield had already been populated with

several TR6’s, TR2’s, TR3’s, TR8’sand Spitfires. As the morning pro-gressed, the DOT team membersgreeted 50 cars including one Jaguar

and one MGB, selling raffle tickets andsigning new members into the club.

We spent most of the day catching upwith other Triumph owners we hadn’tseen in quite some time and discussingthe work done on our cars over thewinter to keep them in driving order. The atmosphere at Day of Triumph isvery relaxed and, after the Show ofDreams, relaxation is just what weneeded.

As Day of Triumph came to a close,Bob and I packed the TR8 with the

raffle prizes won and our 2nd place tro-phy.

It was another beautiful, sunny dayspent with other British car enthusiasts.

Thanks to all the members of New En-gland Triumphs for keeping the car col-lector hobby alive and well and for pre-senting another great Day of Triumph.

I would like to give a very special“Thank you” to New England Triumphsfor their generous support of the Showof Dreams.

Vintage Racing Stable Concours

Nick Grewal hosted the annual VintageRacing Stable Concours again this yearat his beautiful 140 acre estate inSanbornton.

The Estate was a Horse Farm (thus thename Vintage Racing Stable) but Nickhas converted the main barn into an workspace and storage facility that houses 20to 30 cars plus all of the support equip-ment required to maintain such a fleet. Inaddition, this year he paved what wasthe enclosed horse exercise and displayring with now space to hold another 50to 75 cars.

There were 105 Registered Entries in theShow but, of course that did not includeNick’s own cars so the total “On theField” was closer to 200. And it was aspectacular display.

Since this is such a new event, it is hardto predict what the “mix” of cars will be,so they have a limited number of classesPre-war American; Pre-War Foreign;

(the Pre-War classes included Rolls;Packards and Duesenbergs) Post-WarAmerican; Post-War Foreign; and Rac-ing.

Oh yes. Racing, as the Show title im-plies, Nick’s personal interest is in rac-ing. Of the 50-75 cars that Nick owns, about half are Race Cars. And these arenot “retired” race cars. Nick activelyraces them. In fact, one of the factors inthe scheduling of this show is that it wasthe day after the two-day White Moun-tain Vintage GP staged by the VintageSports Car Club of America (VSCCA)at the new Club Motorsports track inTamworth, NH.

Not only were the cars impressive, butthe owners were too. This show is amajor Fund Raiser for the Lakes RegionBoys and Girls Club and Nick was ableto gather some heavy hitters. When youinclude the proceeds from the GalaDinner held the night before, this Eventraised $120,000 for the Boys and GirlsClub Endowment Fund.

It was certainly a great event with a greatcause. We will work with Nick to see ifwe can get a separate British Car Classnext year.

Indian Museum

Due to the weather, this started out asa very iffy top-up or down trip, even

though this was a planned rain or shineevent. Several members from the

southern part of the state had to drivethrough some downpours while othersarrived at the meeting spot and did putup their tops.

With nine cars and 14 members welucked out, the timing between the rainand the drive worked out very well. Wetook a nice ride along Rte 132 to Rte127 which Bob Mitchell proclaimed hisnew favorite.

We all arrived at the Mt. Kearsarge In-dian Museum in Warner, NH, on the dryside and were greeted by several folksthat met us there. With exhibits from allacross North America we enjoyed aprivate tour for our group. Our guidewas very friendly, talkative and knowl-edgeable about the many items on dis-play and answered a lot of questionsfrom the group. It was like stepping back

in time as we worked our way throughthe many different tribes, cultures andimplements they used in everyday life.

This museum was the vision of Charles“Bud” Thompson, who was fascinatedwith the culture at a very young age. Hewent on to work at the Arnold Arbore-tum in Boston and worked hard to openthis museum along with his wife, Nancy.Situated on 12.5 acres in Warner, NH,there is a lot to see and do.

Did I mention the baskets, of every style, shape, size and material that was onhand? Beautifully crafted and designedfor fishing, storage and decoration, theytold a story of the people and their re-spect for the earth and all living things.

After visiting the gift shop we all headedoutside with our picnic lunches and en-joyed the spectacular views of the MinkHills and Medicine Woods. We had thearboretum area all to ourselves to enjoyour food, each other’s company and talkabout the many artifacts on display; manyon loan from other museums and privatecollectors.

Bob Valpey passed away 2019 March19 and in celebration of his life, his familyheld a gathering open to friends andacquaintances at their home in CenterHarbor, NH. Being fortunate enoughto have first met Bob through RonFulmer back in 1987 during the pur-chase of some Jaguar parts, Kellie andI set aside August 4 to visit and pay ourrespects to Bob’s family.

It was a wonderful tribute to a veryhumble and knowledgeable family man.Auto enthusiasts were encouraged tocome in their own vintage cars and en-joy the last opportunity to see Bob’scollection of vehicles and memorabilia.Bob’s interest in race cars, especiallyStudebakers, stretched into the British

car arena via two Allard J2X’s, one ofwhich he and Alice brought to one of ourlast meetings at the “Common Man” inPlymouth. From talking to one of hissons, Ed, I’m encouraged to know heplans to continue Bob’s interest in rac-ing and I’m planning to keep his mem-bership open to Ed when he returns tothe state in another year or two.

Best wishes to the Valpey Family and“THANK YOU” again for sharing Bobwith us.

This year’s Castle in the Clouds showwas held on July 9. The weather was agood bit better than last year, with somehint of rain, but no real threat.

We had about a dozen BCNH Carsthere. The venue remains beautiful, butthis Show seems to be losing momen-tum. I left at about noon, with the spe-cific intent of circling back around andup the “front” road so I could stop andsee the waterfall there. If you haven’ttaken the opportunity to see that wa-terfall, it’s worth the stop. About half-way up the road there is a small park-ing area on the left and about a 100 yardpath to the falls it is really pretty.

After spending 15 minutes at the falls,of course the only way out of the prop-erty was back past the Show Fieldagain. By that time is was about 1:00pm, and more than half of the cars weregone.

I’ll probably go again next year, for theview and the waterfall, but not so muchfor the Show.
