There have been many instances of suffering in the weeks since I last wrote to you, many of them as the direct result of a failure not to treat others in the way we would like to be treated. I read in the book, Ten Leadership Lessons You Must Teach Your Teenager, by Tim Hawkes, that; “A motivation to do something for oneself is ambition. A motivation to do something for others is a calling. Ambition is not a bad thing. But it’s not a calling. A calling needs to be of general benefit to society.” Whilst I don’t condemn ambition, I certainly hope that we can all develop that true sense of calling in 2017. 2017 is a significant year for all of us who are Marist. On 2nd January 1817, Marcellin Champagnat welcomed two young men into a house which he had rented in the town of La Valla where he was assistant pastor. Their names were Jean-Baptiste Audras and Jean-Marie Granjon. They became the first Marist Brothers, and the date became known as the Foundation Day. Later that year, these two Brothers began to teach the young people of La Valla, thus beginning the first Marist school. In 2017 we celebrate the bicentenary of these events, and we look forward to beginning the third century of Marist life and mission, the responsibility for which in this country is now taken up by the members of the Australian Conference of Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat. Dear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove Family,

Welcome to the 2017 academic year and a very special welcome to all new members of our College family. There have been many instances of suffering in the weeks since I last wrote to you, many of them as the direct result of a failure not to treat others in the way we would like to be treated. I read in the book, Ten Leadership Lessons You Must Teach Your Teenager, by Tim Hawkes, that;

“A motivation to do something for oneself is ambition. A motivation to do something for others is a calling. Ambition is not a bad thing. But it’s not a calling. A calling needs to be of general benefit to society.” Whilst I don’t condemn ambition, I certainly hope that we can all develop that true sense of calling in 2017.

2017 is a significant year for all of us who are Marist.

On 2nd January 1817, Marcellin Champagnat welcomed two young men into a house which he had rented in the town of La Valla where he was assistant pastor. Their names were Jean-Baptiste Audras and Jean-Marie Granjon. They became the first Marist Brothers, and the date became known as the Foundation Day. Later that year, these two Brothers began to teach the young people of La Valla, thus beginning the first Marist school. In 2017 we celebrate the bicentenary of these events, and we look forward to beginning the third century of Marist life and mission, the responsibility for which in this country is now taken up by the members of the Australian Conference of Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat.

Our Marist history is something we can all celebrate.

“Awaken” is the theme for 2017.

Have you ever seen the dawn? That moment when it is no longer dark, but not yet fully light. It is a moment when our vision sharpens and our senses slowly attune to the things before us – the arising movement and the emerging sounds. YEAR 12 2016 Heartiest congratulations to our Seniors of 2016. Their results were amongst the best the College has achieved since the OP system was introduced in 1992.

Broadly stated:

We also celebrate the achievements of our non-OP eligible boys, many of whom have already commenced apprenticeships or positions in the workforce.

VOLLEYBALL CARNIVAL My thanks to Mr Adam Knight who accompanied and coached our Open volleyball team who competed in the schools carnival in Melbourne in early December.

TRACK AND FIELD My thanks to Mr David Miles, Mr Michael Lynagh and Mr Des Davis who accompanied the boys to the National Track and Field championships held in Canberra in early December.

MARIST CRICKET CARNIVAL My thanks to Mr Ben Maddox, Mr Daniel Cranitch and Mr James Metzeling who accompanied our boys to Lismore for the Marist Schools Cricket Carnival in early December. The boys won three of their five games.

Will Miller (12S) was named batsman of the carnival and Xavier Thornton (12H) was named Captain of the Combined Marist X1 and Will was also named in the Combined Marist X1.

Thank you also to our families who travelled to Lismore to support the boys.

MARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE 2017 INAUGURAL COLLEGE MASS TUESDAY 14 FEBRUARY - CHAMPAGNAT CENTRE 7:00PM

Students and families are warmly invited to attend the 2017 Inaugural College Mass on Tuesday 14 February at 7:00pm.

During the Mass our Year 12 students will be presented with their Senior badges. Students attending should wear their College uniform.

YEAR 12 STUDENT LEADERS GATHERING In January, prior to the commencement of the new school year the College Captains of Ashgrove were able to gather and meet the other School Captains from other Marist schools in Queensland and northern New South Wales at the 2017 Marist Student Leaders gathering. This was an opportunity to explore leadership in the Marist way using the five characteristics of Marist life.

TUESDAY MORNING RECONCILIATION Students, parents, staff and other members of the College community are welcome to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Fr Chris is available every Tuesday morning in the College Chapel.

WEDNESDAY MORNING COMMUNITY MASS Students, parents, staff and other members of the College community are warmly invited to join with the Brothers for Mass on Wednesday mornings in the College Chapel (every week during term time). Mass commences at 8:00am.

MISSION AND MINISTRY Marist College Ashgrove has a proud history of outreach to others – often with a particular focus on the vulnerable and marginalised. The Ministry program exists for students, staff and community members to be in solidarity with various national and international agencies and programs. It is designed as a practical witness to our mission.

The MATES program aims to:

• Build a spirituality of service and relationship• Be a reflective process• Give opportunity to stand with and for all people, particularly those on the margins

Students in Years 7 to 12 are invited to participate in the program. For further information please contact the Mission Office on 3358 4581.

MATES BBQ WITH THE HOMELESS PEOPLE, WEST END Our MATES BBQ runs every Wednesday night of the year (including during the holidays) at West End, where we share a meal with some of the people of Brisbane who call the streets home.

We take a group of 12 volunteers made up of staff, students, parents and other Marist supporters. Marist College Ashgrove students in Years 11 and 12 are invited to volunteer through the Mission Office. Younger students or children in Years 8 to 10 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent. We ask that students and families sign up to our roster system so that we do not overwhelm our guests with our numbers. Please contact Liz Spry for further information [email protected]

Mission NewsST VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS HAMPER DISTRIBUTION Members of the College St Vincent de Paul Conference – Chris, Will, Jeremy, Hamish and Matias – spent two mornings over the holidays preparing and distributing Christmas hampers with Red Hill/ Rosalie’s Vinnies members Tony, Christine and Richard, ready to be delivered to clients in the surrounding suburbs. Wider Reading Programs 2017

At Marist College Ashgrove, we demonstrate our commitment to reading through the implementation of a range of reading programs, including the Ash Readers’ Book Club; Ash Reader Challenge; Ash Champion Reader; Academic Reading; Silent Reading and the Good Fit reading program in the Ignatius Centre. These programs will continue to be implemented in 2017.

Why is reading so important? A reading child is, quite simply, a successful child. This is not just a matter of anecdotal evidence. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has concluded that reading for pleasure is even more important than social class in determining academic success (Gibbons, 2010, p.3).

The Library Website’s Reading page (http://libguides.marash.qld.edu.au/home/reading) lists age appropriate titles, according to year level and genre. You will also find links to a variety of popular blog sites, providing ideas and information on all things about books.

All secondary students will need to be prepared for reading each Day 9 and Primary students require a “Good Fit” book for all library lessons. The success of these programs depend on each student’s preparedness to commit to and engage in reading a chosen novel and bringing this novel to the lesson.

Your involvement and support in promoting reading is much appreciated and a valued contribution. Please encourage reading by providing opportunities to engage in reading and by having conversations about what is being read.

If you have any unwanted novels on your bookshelves, we are most grateful for donations. Donations can be deposited at the front desk of the library (via your son) or dropped off in a box (labelled library) to the administration office.

From the Deputy HeadmasterTHE HIDDEN FACTORS OF SUCCESS Recently I saw a graphic by Sylvia Duckworth which was entitled The Iceberg Illusion. As we start 2017 I thought it would be a great image and analogy we could use as teachers and parents. I’m sure you are all familiar with the notion that what we see of an iceberg is only a fraction of what lays beneath the surface. It is the same with success. What we see of someone’s success is usually only the tip of the iceberg. What we often don’t see is the persistence, sacrifice, dedication, hard work, good habits, disappointment and failures that lay beneath the surface. Our challenge as teachers, coaches, mentors, conductors, tutors and parents is to help those we guide identify what it is that will lay beneath their success. Our role as adults is to help our children and the students we teach to realise their potential. This task can sometimes necessitate identifying and labelling the moments which, although not identifiable as success, can contribute to the foundation from which it could grow. The more children understand the value of persistence, failure, sacrifice, disappointment, good habits, hard work and dedication in their learning journey the more likely they are to succeed. When we chip away at, remove or avoid these hidden factors below the waterline the less we see in terms of achievement above. Just as the iceberg below the waterline holds up what we see above, the hidden factors of success contribute to the visible achievements. Good luck this year in helping your sons to recognise the value of that which others don’t necessarily see. At Marist College Ashgrove we will be working alongside of you in that endeavour.

CARE WHEN DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP CHILDREN A reminder to parents to be careful around the College when dropping off and picking up students. It is important that, no matter what time of day, drivers are not only conscious of the rules of the road but also mindful of the potential consequences of poor driving behaviour. Since the students have returned we have received a number of contacts from parents and neighbours concerned about the potential for an accident on the roads around the College. Problems such as excessive speed, turning in front of oncoming traffic and across entrances to the College have been noted. A particularly busy entrance to the College is off Glenlyon Drive. There are some drivers who after dropping students off do a u-turn in front of the entrance to the College. A safer alternative to this practice would be to turn left to drive up Acacia Drive towards GPS Rugby club and complete a circuit of the block to once again join Grevillia Rd. This will help ensure the safety of your children. Throughout the year senior students will be reminded of safe driving practices; however, parents whose sons drive to school might also like to have regular conversations about their driving habits particularly around school zones.

I hope the year is a great one for you and your sons.

P&F NewsP&F ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The P&F AGM, it is on Mon 20 Feb at 7pm, Cyprian Pavillion. All parents are most welcome. All executive positions are open and assistance is required to coordinate Amity (running the bar at parent dinners and a few other functions). MARIST CARD DAYS 2017 The Marist community will be again be hosting 4 Card Days (one each term) in 2017. Card Day is a community event where attendees bring friends to enjoy a day of meeting up with each other to play cards, scrabble or other board games while savouring morning tea and lunch provided by Marist families and the Marist catering. Though attendees are generally of retirement age, all are welcome to attend and newcomers are always welcome. If you know of anyone who would like to attend (must bring 1-3 friends and make a table) please contact Ann.

To make these days a success the P & F Card Day Group needs parent helpers to assist with baking or supplying items for morning tea and/or attending on the day to set up and serve the happy patrons.

Volunteers for the day are needed to assist in setting up morning tea, serving tea/ coffee and at the bar, setting out and serving sandwiches for lunch, and cleaning up during the day to keep the day humming along. Volunteers are most welcome to assist for all or any part of the day.

We also conduct a raffle for which items are sought from parents or businesses (eg movie tickets, wine, coffee, chocolates, vouchers, etc). They can be sent into Student Admin in the week leading up to Card Day for collection by Ann or Maree.

It is a great day and volunteers get to meet many other parents from many different years, as well as contributing to an enjoyable day for the older members of the community.

Model UNThere is a Model UN next Wednesday, from 3:30pm-5pm! Future dates will be advised.

WHAT IS MODEL UN? Model UN is a semi-formal debate that mirrors the process of the United Nations Security Council. Students take on the role of delegates of a specific country. Students interested in politics, current events, history, geography or economics would love it, but anyone can come and have some fun.

Who is involved in Model UN? Boys from Year 7-12 are welcome to come and join, and there are boys from all year levels. If you're nervous or shy, there are many more experienced boys ready to help.

WHY DO MODEL UN? Model UN improves your debating skills as well as simply being a fun activity to do. An old boy and Dux of the College, Jack Donnelly, played a very significant part in Model UN and through his own initiative, went on to compete at a local, state and then national level. In these treacherous times, a thorough understanding of the international political situation is in invaluable.

WHERE IS MODEL UN? Model UN is hosted in the Experimental Theatre. If you don’t know where this is, it is right next to the Draney Theatre.

Music NewsWelcome all to what promises to be another exciting and productive year for the Music Department. In 2017 the Music Department has many exciting events planned in a diverse range of genres and concert formats. More details of these concerts will be available in the next edition of the College’s newsletter and also in the soon to be published Music Concert Calendar.

A reminder to all parents that information regarding all music activities for the year will be given via this page, the College App and the weekly email updates for all students involved in the co-curricular music program and instrumental music lessons. It is very important that both parents and students refer each fortnight to this page to keep up to date with events.

MUSIC CAMP 2017 Last Friday, a record 135 music students and staff departed for Alexandra Park, Alexandra Headlands, on the annual start-of-the-year Music Camp. Members of the College’s Chamber Choir, Performance Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber & Senior String Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Guitar Orchestra and Big Band 1 all were involved in the intensive ensemble rehearsals to hone their skills for the numerous performances this year.

The camp was a great success with all ensembles producing some fantastic musical results early in the year as well as having a great time including ten-pin bowling on the Saturday night. 2017 looks to be a great year with a record number of students involved in both instrumental and choral ensembles.

Thank you to the boys and staff Mr Darian Johns, Mrs Megan Harmston, Mrs Catherine Wasserman, Ms Janelle Lee Long, Mrs Alison Braidwood, Mr Sean Flynn, Mr Andrew Doo, Miss Melanie Stewart, Miss Rhiannon Fenn, Mr Jamie Kennedy, Mr Andrew Ball, Mr Tony Vandermeer, Mr Sacha McPhee and Ms Evalyn Keen. Finally a special thanks to the boys for their hard work and musical performance on camp.

JOIN CHOIR! Marist Voices is choir for boys in Year 5-6 who rehearse every Tuesday morning in the music centre at 7:30am. All boys are welcome to come and give it a try! This is a great way for students to make new friends across year levels, learn about singing, build their self confidence and be involved in many exciting performance opportunities throughout the year – it is also a lot of fun! Boys are welcome to come along any Tuesday morning to sign up and try a rehearsal.

Music News Continued...

Any new students in Year 7 are encouraged to try Performance Choir. This choir is for young men in Years 7-12 and rehearses every Friday morning at 7:30am in the Experimental Theatre.

MUSIC LESSONS Any new Secondary or Junior school student who wishes to begin to play an instrument this year may enrol by returning the enrolment form that can be found in the Instrumental Music Handbook or by completing the online enrolment form that is located on the Music page of the College website. The Instrumental Music Handbook can be obtained from the Music Centre. It gives full details of the music program at Marist and procedure for enrolment. Tuition is available on voice, violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, pipe organ, harp, guitar, bass guitar, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, percussion, electronic music/ DJ ( 7-12) and saxophone. At present we are especially looking for students to play the harp, tuba, flute, oboe, bassoon and french horn.

Also, any student who wishes to discontinue lessons this year must fill out a cancellation of enrolment form available from the music centre, please return this form as soon as possible.

Tuition for continuing students from 2016 has already commenced and new students to the program will commence lessons in Week 3. It is very important that students check lesson times via email each week. They are also on display on the noticeboard in the Music Centre and the primary school. Music lesson enrolments carry over from term to term and year to year and only cease once a cancellation form has been received.

STUDENT ABSENCES

1. It is the responsibility of the student/parents to notify the teacher of intending absences 24 hours in advance. Upon notification the teacher will attempt to reschedule the lesson. Notification is best given in writing by sending an email to [email protected].

2. Lessons missed by students without 24 hours prior notice or adequate excuse will forfeit the cost of the missed lesson and the teacher will not be required to reschedule the lesson.

3. Where a student misses a lesson as a result of a College event (e.g. an excursion or an exam), the teacher will attempt to reschedule the lesson if a prior apology in accordance with the above has been given.

4. Students must have all relevant equipment, ie instrument and music, to attend their lesson. 5. Notices are emailed to parents if a student has missed two lessons without adequate excuses.

TUITION COSTS FOR 2017 In line with the minimum rates set by the Music Teachers Association of Queensland music fees will be:

DATABASE & INFORMATION This year sees the continuation of a database for the Instrumental Music program. This will help us with the timetabling of over 550 lessons each week. However as with most things to do with computers, there may be glitches and we will iron these out as quickly as possible as they occur.

One major benefit of this database is the ability to email individual information for students. Each week an email will be sent to each family with a music schedule for your son for that week which will include their lesson time, ensemble rehearsals and sometimes other events that are happening in the College that may relate to them.

LESSONS AND ENSEMBLES Some of the important points to remember:

• All lessons and ensemble rehearsals for the ensembles that attended Music Camp will commence in Week 2, (last week).

• All lessons and ensemble rehearsals for all will commence in Week 3.• Morning rehearsals start at 7.30am but please arrive at 7.20am for setup.• The student must fill out the music lesson record at the back of the diary each week when they receive their lesson time

for the coming week. This is then to be shown to their classroom teacher who will give them permission to leave class. If the time is not listed in the diary, the classroom teacher may not give a student permission to leave.

• Diaries must be brought to every lesson. Students will be sent to get them if they arrive without a diary.• As well as this email, timetables are also available on the Music website and noticeboards in the Music Centre and

Primary School.• Lessons will usually be kept on the same weekday but during the term times could change within that day to avoid

clashes with the same academic class.• All students learning at the College are expected to participate in a College ensemble.• New students to the College will be automatically placed into an ensemble. During the first few weeks of lessons and

rehearsals, students may be moved to a more suitable ensemble.

From the ArchivesINTERVIEW WITH WILLIAM RIDLEY, “ORIGINAL” OLD BOY FRIDAY 26th AUGUST 2016William Ridley was a “First Day” student at St Mary’s College Ashgrove (now Marist College Ashgrove). He was a contemporary of John Walpole and Colin Apelt. He was at the College for the years 1940 and 1941, but then when St Mary’s was taken over by the Army from 1942 to 1944, he continued his education at other schools, finishing finally as a boarder at Mt Carmel Catholic College in Charters Towers. William was an elder brother to Des Ridley, who died tragically young in a road accident, and after whom Ridley House is named.

William and his mates were in Grade 4 in 1940. He lived at The Gap, and was often driven most of the way to school by his father, who was in transport and owned a truck. He can remember the first line-up on 30 January 1940 because he was the left hand person in the front row of the parade – what the military would call the “Marker.” Consequently he was closest to the Headmaster Brother Ignatius O’Connor, who looked upon his new pupils with stern gaze from the top of a set of steps in the old wooden classroom block. William recalls his major memory of the day was of the “newness” of everything – literally in the case of three concrete cricket pitches on the sports oval below the classroom block; the pitches were being constructed even while the students were on parade. Despite this, William remembers that everything was ready for education in the primary area, and classes began immediately.

William’s first teacher in Year 4 was the only lay teacher on the staff at that stage, Frank Buckley. He was very popular with the boys, and William recalls that when Frank later resigned to buy a business at Ashgrove, many students promised him that their families would spend their money at his store.

One of the highlights of 1940 for William was being in the winning Athletics team, the “Greens”, which earned them the inaugural award of the E. Phelan Shield. The photo of the team in the Blue and Gold of 1940 was something of a letdown, however – as William laments, “I was the only one in the photo who didn’t have a proper Athletics singlet, and I stood out!” (He’s right – he does.)

William can remember playing with his mates at Rugby League on what became “The Flats” and is now Des Connor Park. He doesn’t think there were even any goalposts at that stage, and certainly doesn’t believe the team was any great shakes. As William says: “The best footballer in our family by a long way was (younger brother) Des.” William gained a lot of pleasure out of watching Des play his Rugby, as did many other people, but volunteered the little known fact that Des became a boarder in his last year at the College of his own volition – he thought he would be better able to concentrate on his studies that way.

Similarly, William remembers plenty of lunchtimes spent on the cricket pitches of the upper sporting oval with his mates, and feels a “good atmosphere” pervaded amongst the boys in his two years here.

Of the Brothers, William has clear memories of only two – Headmaster Ignatius O’Connor and Harold Carlson. William echoes John Walpole’s assessment of the Brothers as “good blokes”.

William would go on to a distinguished career involving mineralogy. His son Ian graduated from the College in 1978, and was particularly enthused by the teaching of Brother Alexis Turton in the Sciences. After our interview I took William on a quick tour of the College, particularly to see the wonderful Science Centre which bears Alexis’ name, and to the Champagnat Centre sports photo gallery to see the picture of his brother Des. In common with many from his era, he found it hard to reconcile the MCA of today with his memories of it as a first day student – big oaks from tiny acorns grow.

William did offer me one tantalising last glimpse of Ashgrove’s past as he prepared to depart. On 5th August 1940, an explosion occurred at the base of the main statue on the southern side of the Tower Block. The remains of a very amateurish pipe bomb were later found. The police investigated and interviewed every boy in the school, but no one was ever accused or charged. Mark Farrelly’s history of the College, “Canvas of Dreams,” concluded that “the mystery remains to this day.” William gave a hint that he knew the identity of the culprit(s), but beyond saying that “I think one of them became a Brother” would reveal no more. The mystery remains….

I would like to thank William for his generosity in giving up his time to aid the building of a portrait of the early history of the College. He is a lively and entertaining talker, and I thoroughly enjoyed our chat together.

College and CommunityImportant College InformationSUPERVISION OF STUDENTS BEFORE SCHOOL Parents please be aware that the College’s formal yard supervision of students commences at 8:15am every school day. Those boys who are attending sports training, Acceleration Australia or other planned activities will always be supervised by the adult(s) in charge and, from 7:30am, boys are welcome to go to either of the libraries or to the Centre for Learning Enrichment for tutoring and other assistance.

While there are always adults close by around the school from 7:00am these people are not actively supervising any early arrivals. Parents should take this into consideration. As there is no formal supervision prior to 8.15am, students who are at school prior to that time are required to sit quietly in the yard if not otherwise engaged as listed above.

ABSENCES AND/OR EARLY DEPARTURES For your son’s safety and your own peace of mind, please notify the College of absences and/or early departures:

An email will be forwarded to parents when their sons arrive late to school, advising their arrival time and reason.

STUDENTS LEAVING BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY Year 5 - 6 students must report to the Primary School office when they want to leave.

Year 7 - 12 students must also present a Head of House signature when signing out at Student Administration before they leave.

COLLEGE MAIN ADMINISTRATION A reminder to all parents, that the hours for College Main Administration are 8:00am to 4:00pm during term time. College Main Administration is closed during the holidays.

For enquiries outside of these hours (during the College term), Reception operates from the boarding reception area in Br Geoffrey House.
