The last 40 years have been an exciting era of development for BESI, from thehumble beginnings as a representative office for industrial products to a renowned, worldwide supplier of innovative and reliable systems for the marine industry.

This success story would not have been possible without continuous support fromour various partners, namely:

1. Our valued customersWith our customers – shipyards and shipowners alike – constantly challengingus for new solutions to realise their expectations of higher efficiency, increasedreliability and better utilisation of their vessels, our focus on innovation, qualityand the reliability of our products has achieved positive and far reaching results. The globalisation of the shipbuilding industry, as well as shipowners’ preferencefor consistency in the selection of suppliers to their vessels, have accelerated ourdevelopment to what we are today: a worldwide provider of new systems andafter-sales service.

2. Our reliable suppliersThrough long-standing collaboration with the majority of our suppliers, our re-lationship with them has developed into close partnerships. They have supportedus diligently in the realisation of new ideas and products. Our success is theirsuccess as well. In conjunction with this occasion, we would like to convey ourgratitude to them for their constant support and loyalty throughout the manyyears of co-operation … sometimes even in turbulent periods.

3. Our dedicated staffLast but not least, our thanks and gratitude go to our employees who, with theiroutstanding efforts, diligence, loyalty and enthusiasm, have supported therealisation of our ambitious goals. …The history of BESI MarineSystems GmbH & Co. KGdates back to 1966 when H.D.Berg established Ing. BüroHelmuth D. Berg and becamean agent for renownedcompanies such as LIEBHERRfor ship cranes, BOLL + KIRCHfor industrial filters, andKARBERG & HENNEMANNfor fine filters. In addition, thecompany was already in thefield of R&D for differentrequirements of theshipbuilding and machinerysector, and in the design andproduction of pumps andgenerators for ships, as wellas industrial applications.

Shortly after it was foundedMr. Klaus Siebert joined thecompany and the two mentook on the challenging taskof expansion. At that time, the production of the differentproducts was done by variouscontractors, who ensured thetradition of high quality forwhich BESI products arerecognised till today.

BESI – A name to reckon with

in global marine industry

As a second application for the marine sector, 1976 marked the beginning of the company´sdevelopment of regulation valve systems. The first customer received delivery at the endof that year. Since then, BESI has outfitted more then 1,500 shipsets of regulating valvesto customers worldwide, including such renowned engine manufacturers as Wärtsilä.

Based on the positive response from customers and the know-how gained from regulatingvalves, the next product line was developed for the maritime sector: remote-controlledvalve systems.

The first complete regulating valve system was delivered in 1978. Since then, over 2,000such systems have been delivered to customers worldwide . Today, the regulating valvesand remote-controlled valve systems comprise the largest portion of the company´sproducts and form the basis for the FLOW MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS for which BESI isknown today.

The demand for these systems has grown steadily, making another production facilitynecessary. Purchased and rebuilt in 1987, the new production facility has enabled thecompany to produce a large quantity of parts for the actuators by itself, initially utilisingfor CNC processing machines to ensure the timely supply and a constant high level ofquality.

In line with the introduction of IT in the shipbuilding industry, BESI developed and deliveredits first IT-controlled, remote-controlled valve system to the ”MS Ilona“, Reederei Klingenberg. To ensure product quality, the software was developed in-house and has since then beencontinuously upgraded.

In the ensuing years, the other parts of what is today known as the FLOW MANAGEMENTSYSTEM were developed. Another milestone was the development of automated tanklevel gauging systems for the maritime sector. The first of these systems was deliveredto Mützelfeld shipyard in 1995.

Today, automated tank level gauging systems are an essential part of our wide range ofproducts and can be supplied for all kinds of applications. A second development in thisfield is the PESS System, which uses pneumatic principles to gauge tank levels withoutcontact of the membrane with the medium.

In 1969, the company was renamed “Berg + Siebert Ingenieurbüro”.By then, its products had already achieved a reputation for highquality and a relocation to new premises at Buchenstraße 8a inBremen/Germany was considered necessary to facilitate thecompany`s own, newly established production line.

Market demand for the company´s products grew quickly overthe ensuing years, necessitating an increase in staff strength toeight permanent workers. The shipbuilding sector became thestrongest market segment for Berg + Siebert Ingenieurbüroproducts and, only five years after the company´s previousrelocation, a larger and more modern production facility wasdeemed necessary. This led to the third relocation, in 1975, toKnechtsand 4, Bremen/Germany – which, to this day, is still partof the home base for BESI.

Along with the increased output of generators, customersdemanded even bigger diesel generators for marine application. The company´s staff strength had reached 25 by the time thefirst large diesel generator with an output of 312 kW was deliveredto ”AG Weser“ shipyard.

BESI – A name to reckon with

in global marine industry

Another essential part for the FLOW MANAGEMENT SYSTEM is the Anti-HeelingSystem which was, following the principle of in-house development, first delivered toJiangjiang shipyard, China in 1998.

BESI today is present and active in a number of countries worldwide – with China asthe biggest market, and a substantial number of systems delivered to Singapore, Viet-nam, India, Romania, Germany, Spain, Poland, Russia and the Netherlands.

As a second market, the company has ventured into the offshore segment, where BESIproducts already enjoy a high reputation. A large number of offshore vessels and oilrigs have been outfitted with BESI products. In 2002, the first system for an oil rig wasdelivered to an Iranian customer and, since then, such renowned rig producers as AKERand PPL shipyard have purchased several BESI systems.

Besides ships and oil rigs, BESI systems have proven their reliability in docks andindustry level control systems of various applications.

The company´s established tradition of in-house development and manufacture of awide range of products for the maritime industry makes it possible to aid shipownersduring the complete life span of their ships with the shortest delivery times for spareparts and service personnel.

Following the demise of Mr. Siebert in 2002, the ownership of the company was securedby Messrs. Bernhard and Malte Konken, who took over the business in 2003 from thepioneer´s widow, Mrs. Ursula Siebert.

Marine Systems GmbH & Co KG

From January 1, 2006, the company is styled:BESI Marine Systems GmbH & Co. KG to expressits renowned range of products for the maritimesector as the internationally recognised manufacturerof FLOW MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.
