Students are asked to bring in their school laptops on days they attend school. Students are to return to school in their winter uniform. When the students return in Week 3, the teachers will continue to ensure only one unit of work was being created, for students to work on at home or under supervision at school.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome back to all students, parents and staff members. I trust that everyone has had a restful break. Our school did remarkable work in the final weeks of Term 1 to transition to flexible learning at home in a short period of time. The professional commitment of teaching and support staff, transformed how learning took place. As with Term 1, this will be a very different Term 2. During the first two weeks of Term 2, Wednesday 29 April- Friday 8 May, students will continue remote learning. The School will remain operational for students who need to attend. That is, the school will be open for children of essential workers. To support parents with their child’s online learning, teachers will continue to endeavour to make every effort to stay connected with parents via a phone call during the first two weeks of school.

Parents are asked to refrain from assisting their child with online tasks at home. This will

provide children with more independence

information about children’s learning.

To help us navigate the next few months, the

that Marie Bashir Public School will be operating in Phase 1. Students will be expected to return to

school one day per week unless further notice is

given. The remaining four days of learning will be

completed online. The roster of classes explaining

which students/year groups will attend school

during particular days of the week are as follows:

Monday: Year 5 and Year 6

Tuesday: Year 1 and Year 2

Wednesday: Kindergarten

Thursday: Year 3 and Year 4

Please note: The school will be open for

children of essential workers Monday to

Friday.

Students are asked to bring in their school laptops on days they attend school. Students are to return to school in their winter uniform. SCHOOL CROSSING SUPERVISOR I’m delighted to announce that we have received the assistance of a school crossing Supervisor.

Our school crossing supervisor Ruth commenced on Wednesday 29 April 2020. The School Crossing Supervisor will work 8.30am to 9.30am and 3.00pm to 4.00pm.

Ruth is among the first of 80 school crossing supervisors who are part of the first wave of new recruits for schools across the state.

School crossing supervisors have had health, working with children and police checks along with three days of training, which included one day in the classroom and “work placement” with an experienced school crossing supervisor to ensure they are fully up to speed with the requirements of their new role.

“School crossing supervisor positions for other schools are now being advertised and I would encourage community members with a couple of hours to spare on weekday mornings and afternoons to visit www.iworkfor.nsw.gov.au

OPPORTUNITY CLASS APPLICATIONS The placement process for opportunity class entry in 2021, including the Opportunity Class Placement Test, will be delayed until later in the year. As a result, applications will not open on 28 April 2020 as previously advised and published.

This delay is in response to the social distancing measures that are currently in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout the community. As part of the application process, eligible students are required to sit a test in a supervised environment. Social distancing guidelines currently in place make it difficult to implement a large-scale assessment at this time.

The opportunity class placement will still go ahead in 2020 however, the process for that, including the timeline, will look a little different this year. We intend to ensure Year 5 students are placed opportunity classes in 2021 with minimal disruption to schools and families.

The department continues to work closely with NSW Health to ensure people have access to the latest advice on how to keep staff, students and the community safe. Revised dates for applications, tests and process changes (including any changes to school assessment scores) will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.
