Before the age of two, his family moved to Hawaii , and just like the last big Hawaiian swimmer Duke Kahanemoku , learned to swim at the beach in Waikiki. At eight years old , back in California , he began to swim in the ranks of the YMCA club . A year later he had his own coach , Sherm Chavoor . Practiced swimming seven days a week and 52 weeks a year. Before age 11 , Spitz was already holds 17 national records in its category .
