Although life took her out of the community before retiring to Bloomington — Marguerite, the devoted wife of James Rust, never forgot her hometown. Marguerite included a gift to each of her scholarship funds in her estate — a gift that far surpassed any she was able to make in her lifetime. You can support any of the causes you care about for many years to come by simply naming HFBC as a beneficiary on any of these types of accounts: • Retirement Accounts • Life Insurance Policies • Bank or Brokerage Accounts • Certificates of Deposit • Donor Advised Funds

IRA Distributions If you are over age 70½, you can save on income tax when making donations to qualified charities, such as HFBC, directly from your Individual Retire-ment Account (IRA).

Gifts in Your Will You can take care of family first, and include HFBC to receive a specific amount or percentage of your estate. Or, name us a contingent beneficiary, so the causes you care about are next in line after your loved ones.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP To better serve our donors and our community, HFBC is piloting a program to offer confidential, comprehensive estate planning services at no charge and with no obligation. ONE of the great joys of working at Heri-tage Fund is to work with dreamers —

individuals who see things that need doing and figure out how to make them happen. Last year, former Board Member Angie May and her husband, David, approached Heri-tage Fund about helping kids participate in sports and athletic activities. They found a way to make that happen.

Our scholarship recipients are young people with big dreams, and thanks to generous donors, Heritage Fund can help make those dreams a reality. In this news-letter we profile our newest very gifted and very lucky Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

Another local couple had a dream of helping elementary school teachers fund new and creative ideas to teach students math and science. At age 701/2, mandatory IRA payouts can be gifted to a charity tax free to establish a field of interest fund that turns dreams like theirs into reality.

MEMORIALS & HONORS

A tribute gift is an ideal way to remember

or honor someone special and give to Heritage Fund

Seeing the positive impact sports and fitness can have on youth, but knowing participation can often come with great expense, David and Angie May set out to provide support to help more children and teens participate.

The couple, founders of Analytical Engineering Inc., had the desire to do something special to mark the firm's 25th anniversary and also give back to the community.

The AEI Youth Sports Fund soon went from dream to reality."This is a gift from all of the employees at AEI to the community

who has helped support our business since 1994. We hope that at least $25,000 in support will be granted every year and will help many youth get a chance to play sports," Angie said.

The fund, established last year at Heritage Fund, offers grant support for both individuals and organizations. Grants will typi-cally range from $50 to $2,000 for individuals, and organizations can apply for up to $5,000 to help support their participants.

"The hope for this fund is that it will help many kids with a wide variety of athletic abilities, from novices who just want a chance to learn a sport to those who have aspirations to play in college," Angie said.

Angie is a strong proponent of athletics for youth as a way to have fun and stay healthy. She's seen participation help boost focus and organization in school as well. But, she said, she's also known children who have had to drop out or never sign up for programs because it was just too expensive for their family. She understands, remembering having to refuse her own daughter's request to join gymnastics because of the high cost.

"Over a year later when finances improved, she signed up, and sports continued to be a big part of her life from that time forward," Angie said.

The Mays and AEI want to see to it that sports continue playing important roles for other area youth as well.

In addition to supporting a range of ability levels and fitness interests, Angie said the vision for the fund also includes a means of covering those participation costs that can quickly add up, such as travel uniforms and fees for club sports. Schools are also encouraged to apply for grant funding to help offset fees for team members.

The first AEI Youth Sports Fund individual grants were made last fall. More than $14,000 helped to support 22 youth with participation in a variety of athletics, including hockey, volleyball and soccer.

The application for individuals will be available again beginning in the summer. The first organizational grants will be decided later this month.

"We were very happy that during the first round of individual applications, over 20 different kids were granted money and hope that even more can be helped in upcoming years," Angie said.

"Volleyball is their passion that they really want to grow in and continue to play. You are helping make their dreams come true."

— Sage Lacey, on daughters

Madison and Mahala >>

"This fund has allowed my son to play travel hockey this season. This means so much to him."

— Gary Schloemer, on son Henry >>

"AEI Youth Sports Fund has meant my daughter is able to do a sport that she is starting to love, learning from different coaches ... and seeing the joy on her face."

— Linda Balzano, << on daughter Clara

"We work hard to support our kids, but without the help of Heritage Fund, Bella would not have been able to participate. We are so very grateful."

FOLLOWING THEIR DREAMS Congratulations to Hauser Jr.-Sr. High

School seniors Shelby Fugate and Elijah Heslop, our 2020 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars for Bartholomew County.

The pair will receive full tuition for four years to the Indiana college of their choice and a $900 annual stipend for required books and equipment as part of the statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. The program is administered statewide by Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) and locally by Heritage Fund.

Shelby and Elijah were chosen from 65 scholarship applicants evaluated on academic performance; scholastic activities; community involvement; employment; leadership; financial need; written responses; two recom-mendations and an interview with our selection committee.

Shelby, granddaughter of Merri Fox, is planning to major in finance at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business.

Elijah, son of Brian Heslop and Amy Wiley, will major in political science and psychology and is currently exploring schools.

Grant detailsYouth, parents, clubs, teams, and others are eligible to apply for grants to support youth ages 18 and under who reside in Bartholomew and surrounding counties. Grants will include assistance for but not limited to: lessons, clinics, travel, equipment, program fees, dues, etc. Grants will be considered based on financial barriers to participation.

WHAT HAS THE AEI YOUTH SPORTS FUND SUPPORT MEANT FOR YOUR FAMILY?

2020 LILLY SCHOLARS

This scholarship does not only mean I can go to college, but it means that I can prove to the people that told me I couldn’t that I can and I will. It shows that I exemplify a true role model. Once I obtain my degree, I would like to start my own investment broker busi-ness and donate all of my free time to foster children in need of services and a role model. I would like to give the community back what they gave me: hope and confidence.”

SHELBY FUGATE

The Lilly Scholarship is life-changing. It will allow me to leave my education at the forefront of my college and career choices. Without the scholarship I would be forced to limit my involvement during college due to the financial burden that accompanies it. Being a Lilly Scholar is so much more than just getting your tuition paid for. Being a Lilly Scholar is joining a legacy of movers and shakers who have promise to make a difference given a chance. It is because of this endowment I can be the person I aspire to be.”
