WelcomeWe pride ourselves on being a thriving, friendly cluband warmly welcome all juniors and their families,both new and longer-standing members.

One thing unites us all at Marden Russets: our love ofhockey and developing young talent. Our juniors outnumberour seniors by two to one, and they are the lifeblood of theclub, often coming through the ranks to strengthen oursenior squads. They come from many different schools andbackgrounds but they have all chosen to be here and thatcommitment and enthusiasm is often what sets a great clubteam apart from a good school team.

This year, we are upping our game, increasing coaching sessions for allover 10s from fortnightly to weekly, and making better use of the clubhouse asa café serving quality hot snacks and drinks. We are continually improving the quality of ourcoaching, with increased investment in courses and England Hockey qualifications, and we arealso pioneering the Marden Russets Young Leaders scheme to encourage talented older juniorsto coach and mentor younger children. Members will also find it easier to buy their Marden kitthis season, either via email or at the clubhouse.

We are particularly keen not to increase subscription rates due to the current economic climate,but these improvements obviously come at a cost – we are therefore launching our first JuniorAppeal, asking for donations of any size to invest in our future (see back cover).

Our senior coaches are all volunteers and we very much appreciate any parental help, whetherassisting with coaching or any type of administration, from organising squad logistics to servingin the Clubhouse Café.

This booklet is designed to act as a guide to the Marden RussetsJunior Section and to give a flavour of our aims and

ambitions. We hope that you will find it both interestingand useful, retaining it as a directory for contact

details and other essential information.

“Marden Russets Hockey Club aims to inspire and nurture a life-long loveof hockey in all junior members, whatever their ability or background.We pride ourselves in identifying and developing talent and, mostimportantly, enabling everyone to fulfil their potential.”

CommitteeSam Heard – Junior Co-ordinatorLindsay Hancox – Club CaptainClive Felton – Senior CoachCharlie Ridge – Committee member

The Marden Russets Junior Section is flourishing, attracting more young players every seasonand as our membership has grown, so our administrative and communication logistics havebecome correspondingly complex. Our Junior Committee was recently formed to enable everyoneresponsible for different aspects of Marden Juniors to share information and ideas on a regularbasis, thereby ensuring that we deliver the highest standards of coaching across the section.

The Committee oversees and co-ordinates all the Junior Section, ensuring a consistent approachacross all age groups and a smooth transition between different squads as players move upthrough the club. We organise training schedules and the recruitment and training of coaches,attending courses to comply with England Hockey best practice. We also liaise on logistics suchas kit suppliers and equipment ordering, pitch bookings and match fixtures/tournaments and actas a link with the Marden senior teams and Kent Hockey.

Sam Heard is the Junior Co-ordinator, responsible for memberships and general communicationwith players and their parents. Sam says:

“Marden Russets is a fun club to be part of because it combines the friendly welcome of a localvillage club with the high achievements and coaching expertise of a much larger organisation.Our coaches are passionate and supportive about what they do, getting the best out of everychild no matter what their age or ability. Hockey is a great way to get fit and make new friendsand we expect a surge of interest from youngsters inspired by the exciting skills of Team GBat Olympics 2012.”

Sam is the first port of call for enquiries but please do not hesitate to contact any member of theCommittee if you have any questions or ideas.

TEAM SELECTIONTeam selection for matches and tournaments is often a controversial issue in all junior sportsclubs and we have adopted the following guidelines to help both parents and coaches:

• Selection All children aged 9 or above who regularly attend training sessions willhave the chance to play in matches. However, the strongest players arelikely to be selected more frequently;

• ‘A’ Team If more than one team is entered for a tournament, we will select playerson ability to put out the strongest ‘A’ team;

• Age Children should join the group according to their age on 1 Septemberregardless of ability. Exceptions to this rule are rare, and at the discretionof the Junior Committee;

• Coaches’ Coaches’ children are likely to be selected for all matches their parentChildren attends, providing they are regular attendees at training sessions;

• Coaches’ Please respect coaches’ decisions.Decisions

Penalty StrokeA free push, flick or scoop taken from the penalty spot, awarded for a deliberateoffence in the Circle or an offence that prevents the scoring of a goal.

SubstitutionPlay isn’t stopped for substitutions and there is no limit on the number of changes.

Self passA player taking a free hit or hit from the Side Line is allowed to play the ball themselves andrun with the ball.

UmpiresA match is controlled by two umpires who work as a team, each staying close to their ownSide Line.

23m LineLines across the pitch 23 metres in from the Back Lines, signifying the end quarters.

Penalty Corners• Play is stopped to allow teams to take their positions. • The goalkeeper and four defenders position themselves behind the Back Line while the other

defenders must stay behind the Halfway Line. • One attacker stands with the ball on the Back Line and passes the ball to other attackers

waiting at the top of the Circle. • The ball must travel out of the Circle before a shot is taken. • Teams practise a variety of pre-planned Penalty Corner routines.• If the first shot is a hit the ball must enter the goal no higher than the height of the goal backboard. • If the first shot is a scoop or a flick then the ball can cross the Goal Line at any height.• If the half time or end of match whistle is blown, the game continues until the Penalty Corner

is completed.

Free hitAwarded for offences. The free hit can be either a Self Pass or a hit to a teammate and all playersin the opposing team must be at least 5m away from the ball. If the free hit is in the attackingquarter, it must travel 5m before being played into the Circle, and all other attackers must alsobe 5m away.

Marden Russets Young LeadersThis season sees the launch of the Marden Russets Young Leaders schemeto encourage talented older juniors to coach and mentor younger children.Lizzie Payne was one of the first Young Leaders to volunteer:

“We are looking to build on the potential of the Under 12 Girls team by providing training everySunday and encouraging them to learn new skills to progress their hockey. I am also keen forMarden to produce more goalkeepers and will be offering goalkeeping training sessions."

Page 9: Marden Russets Hockey Club Juniors 2012/2013 · 9 Equipment SAFETY No gum shield/shin pads… Means no play! 8 Kit We are delighted to be working with a local company, MoenLloyd Ltd,

Junior AppealIn the current difficult economic climate we are keen to hold subscription rates at last year’slevel. However, we are simultaneously upping our junior game: investing in better coachingqualifications and equipment; moving from fortnightly to weekly coaching sessions for all over10s; and pioneering our Marden Russets Young Leaders scheme to encourage talented olderjuniors to coach and mentor younger children.

These significant improvements obviously come at a cost and that is why we are now launchingour first Junior Appeal, asking for donations of any size to invest in our children’s hockey future.

Please give what you can afford, no matter how little - with 200 junior members, together we canreally make a difference… and perhaps nurture some future Team GB Olympic stars of our own?!

DonationsMarden Cricket and Hockey Club is a registered ‘Community Amateur Sports Club’and benefits from donations under gift aid - please contact Sam Heard torequest a gift aid declaration form, and return this to Sam. Many employersoffer matching schemes for charitable donations, often by Give As YouEarn (GAYE) schemes which can be made directly to the club.These are great ways to give but donations can also be made via:

• direct bank transfer to the club’s bank account:

Account name: Marden Cricket and Hockey ClubAccount number: 00149403Sort code: 60-60-08

• cheque made payable to ‘Marden Cricket and Hockey Club’,and returned to: Sam Heard, Longends Oast, Longends Lane,Collier Street, Tonbridge, Kent. TN12 9SE.
