ANNOUNCING…2019 LENTEN SEASON INITIATIVE Dear fellow St. Paul Members, For many years, the Lenten season has been a time for congregations and individuals to prayerfully study Jesus’s teachings and look to Him as our model for Christian life.

Our congregations of the SE Iowa Synod of the ELCA have joined together during the past few Lenten seasons to set a common goal. Together we’ve supported the ELCA’s global farm initiative with the help of Buster the Pig, and we’ve worked at funding water-related projects, using the Big Blue Bucket, as we studied Water and Witness.

This year, the emphasis is One Bread, One Body. Along with the study, each congregation has been urged to choose a local organization, and focus on supporting and partnering with it. Your representatives on the Lenten initiative team have chosen to partner with the Jones County Community Food Bank.

Please make plans to be involved in this Lenten season activity. You’ll find more information on other pages in this issue of the Pulse.

Pray for Our Military

Please pray for our men and women currently serving in the military:

Jeremy Fall Allen Gilbert Kalib Seeley

Please call the church office if you would like to be added or deleted from this list. Congratulations: SMSgt Jason Schoenbeck is re-tiring from the Air Force/Air National Guard after 25 years of military service. He is the son of Pam Humpal. Thank you for your prayers during the time he served our country.

Generous Giving

We are grateful for: Minger Mowing & Landscaping who kept us from being

buried by all the snow! We appreciate their working through the conditions of winter even when it became overwhelming.

For our grounds committee volunteers who keep the walks clear and salted in between Minger’s visits.

For those who volunteer to serve coffee and donuts between services on Sunday. We would be happy to see new faces volunteer!

For the Celebration Singers and Praise Band for enhancing our services with their prayer and musical talents.

This is just a sample of recent generous gifts shared by members at St. Paul. If you have been a generous giver and your name is not listed, please know, as a community we could never glorify and proclaim the Good News without your faithful stewardship. Your brothers and sisters in Christ thank you! Can you think of someone you would like to acknowledge? Contact the church office and we will add them to our Generous Giving list next month.

Lenten Adult Formation Opportunity:

Join together for this adult formation opportunity through the season of Lent that uses the ELCA's theme of One Bread, One Body. Sundays, 1-2:30 p.m. beginning March 10. Meet in the lower level of the Education Building. Come for one or all sessions. No registration required.

I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, mak-ing every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4:1-6

Are you being called by Christ to be a faith-

filled leader at St. Paul? Are you interested

in working with the ministry teams, staff and

the pastor as a prayerful member of the

Church Council? Do you have ideas for

bettering the common good of the

community? Do you have skills for problem

solving or facilitation? Do you think you

don't know enough about Church Council to

even consider it? If so, consider sitting down

on April 1, 6-7 p.m. with me and other

interested members of St. Paul to learn about

leadership and embark on a prayerful

discernment about serving in leader-

ship. There is no obligation beyond this

meeting outside of listening to the voice of

God and responding as a disciple. Let me

know if you can join us. This is not an April

Fools prank. Shalom, Pastor Rodney

being called?

2 Cor. 4: 1Therefore, since through God’s

mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

In January, I communicated with over 40 St. Paul church members in an effort to form a visioning team so we could participate in the synod led program called Turning Point. Over the course of the interactions, I picked up on resistance to and even resentment around the idea of “visioning.” A couple members gave voice to their hesitation because the last time the church went through this kind of planning it led to the pastor leaving. While I don’t believe these were directly related, subconsciously, people connected the two experiences. It is understandable but does not define who we are now or how we want to be in the community in the future. I wonder if some healing is still needed. For that reason, I would like to call a time out, a sabbatical rest from asking programmatic and task oriented questions, in order to spend some quality time with you, just listening and talking about God’s life in our midst. I am open to being around for a long call here and I’d like us to develop a relationship rooted in trust and faith. And so…. with the enthusiastic support of Barb Kleis, Arlie Willems, and Ken Winter, I would like to invite you to a series of Table Talks. Table Talk {You Talk: We Listen} is an opportunity to gather as community to hear God’s Word at work in us, the body of Christ called St. Paul Lutheran Church, Anamosa, and to explore where God is leading us to serve. When someone talks, everyone present will practice respectful listening. We will explore our common narrative, experience, and hope by asking, “What do we imagine God is doing among us?” Our desire is that every church member will attend a Table Talk. We are preparing to celebrate the church’s centennial in 2023. I believe this is the

Pastor Rodney Bluml

opportune time to engage each other in dialogue. “Table Talks” was a term coined by Martin Luther for the sharing sessions his wife Katie and he hosted around their dinner table. Table Talks were later published and included notes from times Martin spent walking in the garden or was away on his journeys. Prior to each of the dozen Table Talks, Barb will send invitations to a specific group of you with an RSVP request. Help Barb in the planning by acknowledging the invitation. The invitation will be to gather for 90 minutes with a small group (8-10) in a space and at a time designated by the host to pray, open ourselves to God’s Word found in 2 Corinthians 4:1-18, and share as Holy Spirit prompts. As the group reads the 2 Corinthians passage, we will encourage you to underline words and phrases that feel important. In other words, we’ll talk about how the Word of God is speaking right here, right now! I look forward to facilitating the Table Talks along with Ken, Barb, and Arlie. We anticipate that good and unexpected fruit will come from these sessions. We intend to capture common themes and talking points and provide them for the annual meeting in July. Notes from the Parish nurses,

As we begin the Lenten season on March 6th with Ash Wednesday, let us take a deep breath and think about why Lent is important to us. During this Lenten time, let us be thankful for the one body God gave us and how to better take care of ourselves. In the Gospels, Jesus consistently devoted himself to a ministry of healing others physically with a positive well-being of the whole person. Our physical body is our foundation in this life, but true wellness is when we are physically, mentally, and spiritually in har-mony. Though we each need to develop what works for our wellness harmony, here are a few thoughts that history supports as helpful.

We all know that if we eat healthy foods, exercise, see a doctor regularly, we have a change to have better health. But there is more. Mental wellness is a very important part of physical health. If we experience emotional challenges it can be wearing on our physical and spiritual wellness. Research sup-ports that when our thoughts are optimistic our emotional state will be more positive supporting a healthi-er balance mentally and physically. Other suggestions for mental wellness are getting plenty of rest, en-joying nature, spending time with family and friends, and reaching out when we can to help others, and or seeking help for ourselves when we are struggling with emotional challenges.

Spiritual wellness is last but most important to many. As a church community let us be thankful for each other as we share in our Christian beliefs. Ways we connect with God may be praying alone, with others, or both ways. At times if we don’t know what to pray, we can pray the prayer Jesus taught us, the Lord's Prayer. There are no wrong prayers. “Rich is the person who has a praying friend; be that friend.” Spiritual needs may also be met through reading the bible, receiving the sacraments, attending church, or a small group series. May we all have a daily connection with our spiritual needs, for God will be listening.

Jesus died on the cross to reveal the grace that saves, so let us take care of ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually with thankfulness.

If you would like a call or visit from a nurse please call the church office or put a note in the collection basket. Easter Blessings, Carol Stiffler RN, BSN, PN Chris Holtz RN, BSN Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength Deuteronomy 6:5

Thrivent Financial Representative, Theressa Hackenmiller spent Sunday morning, February 3, with St. Paul, extending greetings from Thrivent Financial and highlighting some of the programs available to our congregation from this Christian-based company. Theressa noted that St. Paul has been a leader especially in working with the Thrivent Action Teams program. All members of St. Paul are encouraged to work with our team of Thrivent Advocates in suggesting ways we can become even more involved. Anyone can ask to have an Action Team set up to carry out an activity that benefits St. Paul and the Anamosa community. Many Thrivent members are eligible for 2 Action Team projects each year, with seed money in the amount of $250 to use in support of each project.

Discipleship Corner Ken Winter Director of Discipleship Ministry As a follow-up to our Hot Topics sessions last fall, I would like to present Part II of this article on Suicide Prevention from the ELCA. It is a long but important article and will be run as a series in the next couple newsletters. If you would like to view the whole document it can be found at: http://download.elca.org/ELCA%20Resource%20Repository/Suicide_PreventionSM.pdf?_ga=2.239601859.1906288056.1545232996-1205250934.1501711055 Pastors have unique opportunities to minister with suicidal persons, in part because many people are often more willing to approach clergy than other caregivers. Chaplains in hospitals and nursing homes, colleges and universities, the military, and prisons as well as counselors in Church agencies are called upon to counsel suicidal persons. Their concern is to explore the suffering that motivates the person’s thoughts and behavior and to comfort the person through his or her anguish. Drawing upon their pastoral wisdom, pastors may seek to discern to what extent the person’s suffering is spiritual or has other sources. They will refer (and often accompany) suicidal persons to professional health care and mental health providers for other forms of intervention and assistance. The pastoral response will bring God’s Word to bear on the situation with compassion, competence, and willingness to collaborate with other care providers.

When a suicide does occur, congregations and pastors minister to the bereaved and deceased through Christian burial and their loving support. Funerals are not occasions either to condemn or idealize an act of suicide, but times to proclaim that suicide and death itself do not place one beyond the communion of saints. Because of Christ’s death and resurrection for us, we entrust a troubled person to God’s love and mercy with the promise that “whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s” (Romans 14:7). Pastor and congregation need to offer intentional and sensitive care for the family and loved ones of the deceased for some time and offer them the opportunity to become part of a support group for survivors. 8

Preparing to Act Suicide prevention is broader than responding to a crisis situation. Prevention efforts also aim to reduce or reverse risk factors and to enhance protective factors before vulnerable persons reach the point of danger. They go together with efforts to prevent drug and alcohol abuse as well as violence. 9 “Protective factors include:

Effective and appropriate clinical care for mental, physical, and substance abuse disorders.

Easy access to a variety of clinical interventions and support for help seeking.

Restricted access to highly lethal methods of suicide.

Family and community support.

Support from ongoing medical and mental health care relationships.

Learned skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, and nonviolent handling of disputes.

Cultural and religious beliefs that discourage suicide and support self-preservation instincts.”10

What can we do in our congregations and communities to prevent suicide? The following is intended to stimulate discussion, reflection, and action. Let us first recognize that the day-to-day

Did you know.....

preaching, teaching, and living of the Christian faith in congregations contribute to suicide prevention in indirect yet significant ways. In the community of the baptized, we come to know that we belong to God and to one another. There we give thanks to God for life and for our new life in Christ, and we are empowered to persevere during adversities and to hope in God when all else fails. We learn that human life is a sacred trust from God and that “deliberately destroying life created in the image of God is contrary to our Christian conscience.”11

We are equipped to empathize with others in their suffering and joy and are prepared to act for their wellbeing. We are given a reason to live, forgiveness to start anew, and confidence that neither life nor death can separate us from “the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8: 38). How, we might ask, do we do such things better?

When discussing love for others in confirmation classes, could we talk about what to do if a friend hints at suicide? How does our congregation ensure that all members are known and none are invisible? How do we become more attentive to changes in a person’s participation that may indicate personal distress or depression? How do we strengthen the bonds of community with persons going through stressful periods in their lives and with older persons living alone so they do not feel isolated and abandoned? Might we begin or further develop congregational health ministries, such as a parish nurse program or Stephen Ministry?12

How do we honor the vocation of members who are social workers, psychologists, doctors, nurses, counselors, and other caregivers who often work with suicidal persons? How do we find ways to assure them that when a person they are helping takes his or her life, they are not responsible for not “saving a life”? We also can draw upon these caregivers as well as upon survivors and advocates for suicide prevention to help educate other members about suicide.

What in our community, we should ask, are the cultural and social dynamics that lead to isolation and hopelessness? How do we address them? What are the resources in our community to respond to suicidal behavior? Do members know how to access them? We can join with other churches and community groups to help ensure that adequate treatment resources are available. What about our schools? Is suicide prevention a part of their programs that focus on mental health, substance abuse, aggressive behavior, and coping skills? Are there peer counseling or ministry programs in our schools and congregations?13

What about the firearms in our homes? Most gun owners reportedly keep a firearm in their home for “protection” or “self-defense,” yet 83 percent of gun-related deaths in these homes are suicide, often by someone other than the gun owner.14 Are our homes really safer with guns in them?, we might ask.

Page 9: March/April 2019 - St. Paul Lutheran Church- Anamosa, IA€¦ · on April 1, 6-7 p.m. with me and other interested members of St. Paul to learn about leadership and embark on a prayerful

How do we counter the stigma often associated with mental illness? Should not the crucial role of untreated depression in suicidal behavior be an important consideration in debates on insurance coverage for mental illnesses? What might we do as citizens to promote accessible and affordable mental health services to enable all persons at risk for suicide to obtain needed substance abuse and treatment services?15

We can encourage, use, and learn from suicide prevention programs in our social ministry organizations and at our colleges and universities. What, we should ask, could our church-related day schools do to prevent suicide?16 How are our seminaries preparing pastors to minister with suicidal persons? Should suicide prevention be a part of continuing education for rostered persons? Could we create opportunities at events for youth, women, and men and in our camping and retreat programs to learn about suicide and its prevention?

The Church Council urges synods to support members, congregations, and affiliated institutions in their efforts to prevent suicide. It directs the governing bodies of church wide units to evaluate their programs in light of this message, calling upon this church’s educational and advocacy programs to make suicide prevention an important concern in their ministries. It directs the Department for Ecumenical Affairs to share this message with churches with whom we are in full communion and to express our willingness to work with them to prevent suicide. The Church Council welcomes the Surgeon General’s call for a comprehensive national strategy for suicide prevention.17

Before we go in peace from worship to serve the Lord in the trials and joys of the coming days, we receive the Benediction: “The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.” “Amen,” we sing. We are not alone,

abandoned, and without hope. The Lord’s name is “‘Emmanuel,’ which means, ‘God is with us’” (Matthew 1:23). The first all-day sew-in was a huge ecumenical success, with several women from St. Patrick church joining us. Watch for information about another sewing day coming soon.

Please consider donations of good, used and clean, colored or patterned sheets to be used for quilt backs, as well as new fabrics that will be sewn into quilt tops. Those who want to sew at home are invited to create 60” x 80” tops, with fabrics provided, and those who only want to tie can join us on Mondays at 1 pm.

For more information about quilting, please contact Pam Humpal at 462-3219, Jan Allaire at 462-4223, or Virginia Danielson at 462-4625.

Thank you, St. Paul.

The youth going on the mission trip this summer would like to thank everyone for their support of Super Sub Sun-day. We sold 108 subs. With the purchase of your subs and extra donations we are able to raise $706 dollars. Special thanks to Virginia Danielson for using a Thrivent Action Team to offset the expenses. Also, thanks to the coffee hour team that donated their donations to the youth that day. Marcy Pate

Members Present: Colin Stiffler, Doug Fairbanks, Shawn Countryman, Tom Sabotta, Lori Reynolds, Carlene Vavricek, Stacie Sullivan, Barb Wilson, Rodney Bluml Colin called the meeting to order at 7:45 pm. Agenda/Minutes: Minutes from the December Council meeting were submitted. Shawn moved to approve the minutes and Lori seconded the motion. Motion carried. Pastor’s Report:

Baptisms

Wedding Trishelaina and Doug Loney 12/15/18

New Members Sarah, Shawn, Mikayla & Jenna Schmieg

St. Paul rescinded our request to participate in the synodical Turning Point program when it became clear we would not be able to put together the required learning team at this time.

On Dec. 20, I assisted with serving dinner at Forks and Friends, hosted at the UMethodistC. This would be a great service opportunity for our youth to plug into once a month. Dinner is served from 5-6:30 p.m. to all who ask.

That same evening, the St. Paul Christmas caroling group coordinated by Marcy P. and Virginia D. made the UMC our first stop as we headed out to about a dozen different houses of St. Paul parishioners to spread cheer.

Thanks to all who added energy and enthusiasm to our Christmas season services, decorations, and social outreach efforts.

On Sunday, Jan. 20, St. Paul will host an ecumenical potluck from 4:30-6 p.m. followed by a service of Prayer for Christian Unity from 6-7 p.m. The theme recognized internationally is: “Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue” from Deuteronomy 16. Pastor Jerry Collell will be the preacher. St. Paul musicians will lead the music. Please try to attend and bring a neighbor or friend. St. Paul has committed to a youth service trip to Leech Lake Ojibwe Reservation, July 7-12, 2019. Lisa Folken is primary contact and coordinator. We are focusing it on current high school youth and the cap will be 16 participants. I plan to go and most likely we will need another male chaperone. Financial Reports: Brian wasn’t able to attend the meeting. He will email his report to Council members next week. Old Business:

Visioning team follow-up on invitations- Pastor visited with 40 individuals regarding this team and only 1 person was interested in taking part. The timing isn’t right for St. Paul at this moment. We will wait on this for now.

Nominating Committee follow-up on invitations- Council will follow up with members of St. Paul to see who is being called to leadership in this next year. Names will be submitted to Pastor Rodney by March 18 so he can extend an invitation to a period of discernment. He hopes to meet with all potential candidates on April 1st to review the role of a Council member and the responsibilities connected to it.

Follow up on Constitution Revision- Shawn and Stacie met with Jay Willems to look over the Constitution. They are checking to be sure that our document supports our mission and what we do here at St. Paul. They discovered some changes that should be made. They will submit those changes for Council approval. Cell tower update- Colin talked with Blue Sky Tower regarding their interest in establishing a contract on the tower we currently rent to US Cellular. Blue Sky Tower wants to hold a 50 year contract with us. There were no advantages to making this change, so it was decided to deny this offer and keep our existing contract. New Business: St. Paul Staffing needs: Discipleship Minister >< Deacon

In light of Ken Winter‘s impending candidacy for rostered ministry, the council received salary guidelines and job descriptions for a minister of word and service, director of discipleship ministry, and director of youth and family ministry. The council will deliberate the staff needs for St Paul Lutheran and attempt to reach a resolution by March so contracts can be offered in a timely fashion.

Mental health grant application in conjunction with NAMI- Ken has been in contact with the director of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), regarding a $10,000 grant. He will submit the grant application to NAMI to be accepted or declined. It would be exciting for our congregation to collaborate with an organization like NAMI. 2018 Congregational Report questions- Council members read through questions 18 and 19 on the 2018 Congregational Report. After discussions and group consensus, they were able to provide scores for each item.

Agenda for Next Meeting: Sound system upgrade Upcoming Schedule/Conferences/Meetings/Schedules/Coming Events:

Worship Matters (adult formation class)- began on Jan. 13th. It is held on Sundays from 1-3. There are 13 people participating. Council members can meet with Bishop Burk- Thursday, January 24, First Lutheran, Maquoketa, IA 6:30-8 pm Time and Date of Next Meeting: Feb. 11th following the All Leadership Meeting that starts at 6:00. Pastor’s Report:

1. Deaths Laura Ortgies

2. Baptisms

3. Wedding

4. New Members Sarah, Shawn, Mikayla & Jenna Schmieg received on 1/27. 5. On Sunday, Jan. 20, St. Paul hosted an ecumenical potluck from 4:30-6 p.m. followed by a service of Prayer for Christian Unity from 6-7 p.m. The theme recognized internationally was: “Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue” from Deuteronomy 16. Pastor Jerry Collell was the preacher. It was just-ice! St. Paul musicians Barb Kleis and Virginia Danielson led the music and 20+ member choir. We had about 45 people participate from at least five congregations. Thanks to Lori R. and her kitchen crew for facilitating the potluck. Thanks to Ed G. and Susan K. for extending hospitality at the service. The energy was very positive and many expressions of gratitude were offered. 6. St. Paul has committed to a youth service trip to Leech Lake Ojibwe Reservation, July 7-12, 2019. Lisa Folken is primary contact and coordinator. We have expanded the invitation to recent grads and are considering opening it to 8th graders. We have to submit our final number on Feb. 9. I plan to go. 7. I am looking forward to Table Talk when I return from Israel and Jordan.

Financial Reports: Nancy Lyon-Douglas shared the financial reports. At this point in the year we are on target with our budget. Nancy has all the financial information transferred to the Realm system. She will continue to operate in both Quicken and Realm in February to be sure that everything is flowing smoothly before switching completely to Realm.

Old Business:

New nominees for Council- Colin shared a list of potential nominees with Carlene and Lori. They will connect with these people in the coming weeks to extend an invitation to a period of call discernment. We also need to surface candidates to serve as Treasurer. These nominees do not need to be accounting experts but have comfort working with budgets and finances. Pastor intends to meet with all potential candidates on April 1st.

Mental health grant application in conjunction with NAMI- Arlie Willems has submitted the application for this grant and we are waiting to see if it is accepted.

Page 13: March/April 2019 - St. Paul Lutheran Church- Anamosa, IA€¦ · on April 1, 6-7 p.m. with me and other interested members of St. Paul to learn about leadership and embark on a prayerful

Constitution Revision- Shawn is continuing review of the Constitution and ByLaws. He will submit suggested changes for Council approval.

New Business:

St. Paul Staffing needs/job descriptions- In light of Ken Winter’s impending approval for rostered ministry this summer, Barb Kleis met with Council to discuss staffing needs. The consensus was that in order to maintain and grow our congregation, we need to consider a full time youth and family ministry coordinator. Ideally this person would have pastoral care training too. Arlie, Barb and Carlene will work on a job description and submit for consideration at the next meeting. We intend to make a final decision at the next council meeting.

Sound system upgrade- The council received, read, and briefly discussed a request from Laura Secrist's family to allow the purchase of a new church sound board and system in Darel's memory. Additional information is being gathered before the Council makes a recommendation (i.e. is any of this project covered by insurance from the lightning strike; how do we honor existing relationships with technology providers; insuring ongoing support for training and maintenance of a new system).

Table Talks- At this point, twelve members have committed to hosting Table Talks in their homes. These will be times to gather with congregation members for fellowship and conversation about what God is doing in our midst. Invitations to specific table talks are sent out two weeks prior to each event. The intention is to have each member attend a Table Talk so her/his voice can be heard.

Agenda for Next Meeting: Sound board proposal Constitution update

Upcoming Schedule/Conferences/Meetings/Schedules/Coming Events: Lenten meals starting on March 13th
