Awards support basic science research to better understand the mechanisms behind disease pathophysiology and to develop strategies to prevent or treat cystic fibrosis.

American Cancer Society Research Grants and Awards Departments: Arts and Sciences, Connell School, and Graduate School of Social Work Deadline April 1, 2012, 5:00 p.m. ET

Multiple grant opportunities support high impact and innovative cancer research and training across a wide range of disciplines to meet critically important needs in the control of cancer via a variety of programs. Grant areas include Research Scholar Grants, Institutional Research Grants, Postdoctoral Fellows Grants, Mentored Research Scholars Grants, and a Special Initiative in Cancer Control and Prevention Research Program: Health Disparities.

Amount of Awards: Amounts range from approximately $138,000 to $400,000 over three to five years, depending upon the award, plus up to 20% direct costs.

Irvington Institute Fellowship Program of the Cancer Research Institute Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadline: April 1, 2012

Three-year Fellowships support scientists who wish to receive training in cancer immunology or general immunology.

Amount of Award: $50,000 for the first year, $53,000 for the second year, and $57,000 for the third year.

Human Frontier Science Program Young Investigator and Program Grants Departments: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics Deadline: Online pre-registration for password by March 21, 2012 LOIs due March 28, 2012 Invited Full Proposals due mid-September 2012

Two funding mechanisms, Young Investigators’ Program and Program Grants, support novel collaborations that bring biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering to focus on problems at the frontier of the life sciences.

Amount of Awards: $250,000 for a team of two; $350,000 for a team of three; $450,000 for a team of four or more. These are amounts awarded to the whole team per year for three years. Indirect costs are not allowed.

Awards support senior researchers and research fellows to accelerate the development of therapeutic approaches to myeloma and advance the understanding of disease biology, treatment, and drug resistance.

Multiple award mechanisms support an understanding of epilepsy that will lead to better treatment, more effective prevention, and ultimately to a cure.

The Fellowships support postdoctoral researchers conducting high-risk research on cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

March of Dimes Basil O’Connor Starter Scholar Research Award Departments: Biology, Chemistry, Connell School and Graduate School of Social Work Deadline: Letters of Nomination due March 15, 2012

Awards support basic research into life processes, such as genetics and development; clinical research applied to prevention and treatment of specific birth defects and prematurity; the study of environmental hazards; and research in social and behavioral sciences relevant to saving the lives of babies who are at risk due to prematurity, birth defects, and low birth weight.

James S. McDonnell 21st Century Science Initiative Departments: Arts and Sciences Deadline: March 14, 2012, 3:59 p.m. CT

This initiative supports research in two program areas. The Complex Systems program supports scholarship and research directed toward the development of theoretical and mathematical tools that can be applied to the study of complex, adaptive, and nonlinear systems to address issues in fields such as biology, biodiversity, climate, demography, epidemiology, technological change, economic development, governance, or computation. The Brain Cancer research program supports novel research that will generate new knowledge leading to increased rates of survival and improve functional recovery for individuals with brain cancer.

Amount of Awards: A maximum of $450,000 over three to six years. Indirect costs are not allowed.

Grants support transformative or catalytic scientific research projects that will significantly move the field forward toward effective brain tumor therapies.

Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar Award in Aging Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadlines: LOIs due March 8, 2012, 11:59 p.m. ET

Invited Full Proposals due July 2012

Award supports established investigators in biomedical research, including basic biology, basic biomedicine, and epidemiology, to encourage development of new, creative research programs in aging, with particular interest in areas such as structural biology, molecular genetics, genetic epidemiology of aging, candidate longevity genes, and aging in the immune system.

Amount of Award: Up to $150,000 per year for direct costs, plus indirect costs (full NIH F&A), for up to four years. Indirect costs on equipment are not allowed.

National Center for Responsible Gaming Large Grants Departments: Arts and Sciences, Carroll School, Graduate School of Social Work, and Law School Deadline: LOIs due March 1, 2012 Full applications due July 2, 2012

Grants fund research that helps to better understand pathological and youth gambling and effective methods of treatment for the disorder; encourages the application of new research findings to improve prevention, diagnostic, intervention and treatment strategies; and advances public education about gambling disorders and responsible gaming.

Amount of Award: Up to $75,000, including 15% indirect costs.

American Education Research Association Grants Program Department: Arts and Sciences and Lynch School Deadline: March 1, 2012, 11:59 p.m. PT

Grants support faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and other doctoral-level scholars in a variety of disciplines to stimulate research on U.S. education issues using data from the large-scale, national, and international data sets supported by NCES, NSF, and other federal agencies.

Collaborative Grants support research in the pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis or therapy of chronic lymphocytic leukemia; Pathways Grants support research in pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis or therapy of follicular lymphoma.

Amount of Award: Collaborative Grants of up to $250,000 over two years, including up to 25% indirect costs; Pathways Grants of up to $750,000 over three years, including up to 25% indirect costs.

National Academies Keck Futures Initiative Departments: Arts & Sciences Deadline: Application process and deadline will be available in early February

Conference date is November 14-17, 2012

The Futures Initiative is designed to enable scientists from different disciplines to focus on new questions, upon which they can base entirely new research. The 2012 Futures Conference is focused on “The Informed Brain in a Digital World.” Scientists must apply to attend the conference; only attendees are eligible to apply for awards in the following year.

Amount of Award: $25,000, $50,000, $75,000, or $100,000.

Autism Speaks Trailblazer Award Departments: Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Connell School, Lynch School, and Graduate School of

Awards support highly novel “out of the box” autism-relevant research that opens new avenues to understanding the causes, diagnosis, subtyping, prevention, treatments, and cure of autism spectrum disorders.

Amount of Award: $100,000 for one year, including 10% indirect costs.

John Templeton Foundation Departments: Arts and Sciences, Carroll School, Lynch School, and School of Theology and Ministry Deadline: Preliminary proposals due between February 1-April 16, 2012 Invited Full Proposals due between May 26-September 4, 2012

The Foundation supports research on issues surrounding altruism, creativity, free will, generosity, gratitude, intellect, love, prayer, and purpose. For this submission window, the Foundation invites proposals for its Core Funding Areas (Science and the Big Questions, Character Development, Freedom and Free Enterprise,

Exceptional Cognitive Talent and Genius), along with two additional priority funding areas: 1) Breaking New Ground in Science and Religion and 2) The Physics of Emergence.

Amount of Awards: In 2011, grants ranged from $50,000 to over $2 million; most projects had timeframes of one to three years. The Foundation allows a maximum of 15% in indirect costs.

Breaking New Ground in Science and Religion: Up to $200,000 and up to three years; most awards are expected to be one or two-year projects in the $50,000 to $100,000 range.

The Physics of Emergence: Up to $600,000 and up to 30 months; awards will total approximately $5 million for 12-18 projects, 2-4 of which will be experimental projects.

Open Society Institute Fellowships Department: Arts and Sciences Deadline: February 1, 2012

Fellowships support individuals seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges.

Amount of Award: $80,000 to $100,000.

Alcohol Beverage Medical Research Foundation Departments: Arts and Sciences, Connell School, and Graduate School of Social Work Deadline: February 1, 2012

The Foundation funds research on important aspects of alcohol consumption including various behavioral and biomedical factors and effects of alcohol use, abuse, and misuse.

The Center, located at Rutgers University, invites scholars from all disciplinary perspectives and methodologies—empirical, analytical, literary, historical, and theoretical—to study the topic “Formalisms” for a one-year term.

Amount of Award: $45,000 stipend with benefits and support for research.

Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation Grants Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadline: December 30, 2011

Grants support research focused on islet cell transplantation, macrovascular disease, and neuropathy.

Amount of Award: $50,000 per year for up to two years, including indirect costs of less than 10%.

Alzheimer’s Association Awards Departments: Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Social Work, and Connell School Deadline: LOIs due December 20, 2011, 5:00 p.m. ET Full applications due February 7, 2012, 5:00 p.m. ET

Three distinct award mechanisms support dementia research, from basic science to social and behavioral investigations.

Amount of Awards: New Investigator Research Grant Award of $100,000 per year for up to two years; Investigator-Initiated Research Grant of $240,000 per year for up to three years; New Investigator Research Grant to Promote Diversity of $100,000 per year for up to two years; Mentored New Investigator Research Grant to Promote Diversity of $150,000 for up to three years. Fellowships support all research disciplines in the biomedical fields for those in the later stages of their postdoctoral training.

Amount of Award: $43,500 to $51,000 per year, inclusive of a $2,000 expense allowance.

Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation Individual Research Grants Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadline: December 15, 2011

The Foundation supports research focused on strategies to promote neural growth and survival, evaluating the efficacy of drugs/interventions related to secondary neuronal injury, defining anatomical characteristics of spinal cord injury, and elucidating the biological mechanisms to improve concomitant functions affected by spinal cord injury and alleviate pain and spasticity.

Amount of Awards: Two-year awards for senior scientists and young investigators up to $75,000 per year, including indirect costs up to 10%. Postdoctoral Fellowships up to $60,000 per year, including indirect costs up to 10%.

Muscular Dystrophy Research Grants Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadlines: LOIs due December 15, 2011 Full Proposals due January 15, 2012

Grants support independent investigators with interests in developing treatments for the muscular dystrophies and related diseases of the neuromuscular system, including the muscular dystrophies, motor neuron diseases, peripheral nerve disorders, inflammatory myopathies, disorders of the neuromuscular junction, and metabolic diseases of muscle, among others.

Amount of Award: Unlimited for one to three years, including 10% percent indirect costs.

Muscular Dystrophy Development Grants Departments: Biology and Chemistry Deadlines: LOIs due December 15, 2011 Full Proposals due January 15, 2012

Grants support members of a research team in the laboratory of an independent investigator. Under guidance, the applicant will conduct a neuromuscular disease research project relating to the muscular dystrophies, motor neuron diseases, peripheral nerve disorders, inflammatory myopathies, disorders of the neuromuscular junction, and metabolic diseases of muscle, among others.

Amount of Award: Up to $60,000 per year for one to three years, including 10% indirect costs.

The Huntington Fellowships Departments: Arts and Sciences Deadline: December 15, 2011

Awards for Fellowships (residential) for faculty and post-doctoral Fellows support humanities research, using the Huntington’s collections, in the fields of history, literature, art history, and the history of science and medicine.

Amount of Awards: Barbara Thom Postdoctoral Fellowship, Mellon Fellowship, Dornsife Fellowship, and Dibner History of Science Fellowship awards are $50,000 each.
