Managers Message —by Anthony Chelena

Welcome Dayna Kelsey, who is the

new Clubhouse Manager for our Main

Clubhouse. She is a native of Indiana,

raised in an agricultural area closest

to South Bend. She attended Perdue

University where she earned a degree

in Hospitality Management. After

university she worked as a

Catering Sales Manager for

the Hilton Antlers Hotel

in Colorado Springs, CO.

Dayna comes to us most

recently from Indianapolis,

IN, where she was Assistant

Food & Beverage Director

at Hawthorns Club. At

Hawthorns Club she hosted

over 60 onsite weddings a

year as a part of their large

operation. You can check out her handiwork here http://

antlers.com/weddings-and-social-events.shtml and here

. Dayna has special operational emphasis on service training.

She has many new ideas for our Club and is excited to hear

yours too. Dayna arrived in Hendersonville the last week of

February and is brand new on the job. The first week here

she will be rotating through other departments to get fully

acquainted with our Club. Stop by and say hello to Dayna!

President’s Message —by Chris Burns

While March means basketball tournaments,

thinking spring, and the prelude to Azaleas

and the Masters for many of us, for your

board of directors it means budget time in

anticipation of a new fiscal year. While our

current year has been a good one so far…

meaning we are running pretty close to

our budget in terms of revenues and expenses, one area is still

lagging…enough new Members to replace those leaving due to

age or relocation. As Past President Johnson pointed out last

year, that hits us in three ways: less annual dues revenue, fewer

members to utilize and pay for club services, and fewer initiation

fees. The latter of those has been more problematic over the past

6-8 years. Historically, many clubs like ours relied on initiation

fees to supplement operations and our capital expenditures

budget each year. In the case of HCC, we need between $250,000

and $300,000 of free cash flow every year just to keep up with

capital maintenance and do modest capital improvements and

additions; a number we have only hit three times in the past ten

years. As a result, we have been very frugal with most of our

capital projects…paving 1/3 of our cart paths vs all of them,

repainting tennis courts vs replacing them, paving portions of

parking lots, not all of them. All while watching our strong cash

position get a little lower every year. As a club, we pride ourselves

on our historically strong financial position of practically no debt

and strong cash reserves. Our ongoing challenge is to maintain

that financial position while meeting our capital improvement

needs for today and tomorrow.

So while I wouldn’t go quite so far as to call our upcoming

meetings March Madness, it would definitely be fair to be termed

March Resourcefulness!

Golf News —by Ben Balentine

Hard to believe, but

spring is only a few

weeks away and our

Golf Schedule is about

to get underway.

Invitations for the Men’s Member-Guest

to be held on July 16th, 17th and 18th were

mailed on March 1st. Entries must be

completed and returned by mail only to the

Golf Shop on or after April 1st.

There are only 4 weeks until the WGA

Opening Luncheon and 6 weeks until the

SMGA Opening Event and 8 weeks until the

Spring Member-Member.

Just a reminder that everyone must check

in at the Golf Shop before playing golf,

regardless of what time of day. We need to

be aware of everyone on the golf course and

driving range in case there is an emergency.

Family Golf will start back on Saturday,

April 18th. Come out and enjoy family golf

activities together. There is no age limit or

skill level required. This program is designed

to allow everyone to get out and enjoy golf

in a fun, quick, pressure free atmosphere.

PGA JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUEOn Tuesday, April 14th we will be hosting a PGA Junior League sign up evening for children 13 years old and under. Please join us for a free cookout at the grill at 5:30 and get your kids ready for a great summer of golf. Please call the Golf Shop (693-6507) to let us know if you are planning on attending. We had 24 juniors last year and we hope to increase to 40+.

Golf Tips —by Jay King

“When it’s breezy, swing easy”This is one of golf sayings that’s easier said than done,

especially when you have heavy wind in your face.

Natural instinct is to swing harder to overpower the

wind. Unfortunately it usually results in poor shots.

When you try to swing harder your swing can steepen and the additional

backspin causes the ball to go higher and shorter. Teeing the ball lower can

also increase backspin because it encourages a more descending approach.

It’s difficult to square the club face when the ball is teed low, causing a slice

spin. To be most effective, keep the tee height where you can have a level-4

degree up approach angle through impact.

The best advice while playing in windy conditions is to take a few extra

clubs on your shots and swing at 75 percent. Play the ball farther back

in your stance than normal and squat a little more at address to stay as

balanced as possible. If you can resist the urge to over swing, it will allow

you the balance needed to make a solid impact.

SMGA —by Diedrich Mohring

I was sitting in the Ward Room

on a Wednesday recently and the

weather was predicted sunny but

still a little cool. A group of us were

all waiting for the frost hold to be

lifted so we could begin to tee off.

You could feel the enthusiasm of all

the golfers there wishing warmer

weather was here.

Well, it’s getting closer as we

all know, in spite of what the

groundhog predicts.

Our first official start of the SMGA

season is just around the corner

with the opening of the SMGA

SPRING TOURNAMENT on

Friday, March 10th. It will be a full

breakfast at 7:30 AM and a 9:30 AM

shotgun start for a Shamble 2 BB

net. followed by a luncheon.

Get signed up now for the start of the new 2015 season.

If you haven’t played with the

SMGA (Senior Men’s Golf

Association) before now, it’s a great

time to start. Dues are only $15.00

per season and $4.00 dollars for

our normal events every Monday.

Starting age is 55 years old. Great

group of guys who will welcome

you to play regardless of your ability

or handicap.

We normally have a different format

every Monday such as 2 Man Team

Best Ball Net, 4 Man Single Best Ball

Net, Texas Scramble, 4 Man Team,

Colored Ball Net (Modified 2 BB

Net), etc. Well you get the idea!!

As the seasons change, our department

also changes our focus from winter work

and projects to preparing the golf course

for another playing season. For us, the

biggest activity signaling the start of the

golf season is aerifying greens. The golf

course will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, March 18th

and 19th. This is a labor-intensive practice that is not only

an agronomic necessity, but also our opportunity to set the

greens up for success throughout the year.

Our staff is also putting the finishing touches on the

landscaping at the lower putting green. The changes here

have been well received, and we’re excited about the final

product. Not only will the green benefit from the increased

light and air movement, the view of and from the area is a

great addition.

Always great to hear from the Membership.
