SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY XAVIERITE THE EYES AND EARS OF THE STUDENTS the Wednesday March 7th, 2012 Vol. 81 No. 18 www.thexavierite.com Beginning in Fall 2012, Saint Xavier University’s Department of Communication will implement significant changes to its program. In an e-mail interview, Renee Robinson, associate professor of Communication, discussed the changes. The new program, besides maintaining an 18 hour core, will offer eight different areas of concentration: Advertising and Public Relations, Communication Studies, Corporate Communication, Electronic Media Production and Writing, Health Communication, Journalism, Online Communication and Sport Communication. Students will choose two different nine hour concentrations from the list above. These concentrations will also be available as minors for students majoring in other subjects. This differs from the old program which offered a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with an emphasis on either mass communication or organizational communication and minors in radio/electronic media, organizational communication and communication. According to Robinson, these changes are being implemented for five main reasons: “to provide students cutting edge training and development in the field of Communication, to modernize the curriculum to better reflect what the Communication field resembles today, to develop eight new concentrations and minors of interest to students, to offer students flexibility in the classes they take by allowing them to choose among several concentrations and to provide students the opportunity to select concentrations that match their career interests and professional goals.” Robinson maintains that this new program will make students more marketable for future employment or graduate school, teaching them valuable “production, presentation, Comm. So long, honesty By Karina Palencia News Editor The Irish Tradion Returns For the first time since 2009, the South Side Irish Parade is back. After being put on hiatus for two years due to disorderly behavior from the 300,000 plus crowd, the festivities will again take place on Sun., Mar. 11 at 11a.m. The parade is set to go down Western Ave. from 103rd St. to 115th St. and go through the Morgan Park and Beverly neighborhoods. Saint Xavier University’s NAIA football national champions are one of the featured floats, being the second in line of the parade. “I feel honored to be featured in the float, we are the second float, and it is very good for the school. We are after the war veterans so it is a great honor,” said Anthony LaBanca, a senior offensive lineman who will be with his teammates by the float. Donations were collected from various supporters and by the surrounding bars on Western Ave. Sean’s Rhino Bar on 103rd and Western and Keegan Pub on 106th and Western have helped by donating money to bring back the parade. Carey Sullivai, a manager, of six years at Sean’s Rhino Bar is happy to have the parade back. “The parade has brought in so much business from the start of the weekend and more,” said Sullivai. Bartenders at Keegan Pub said they are very happy that the parade is back and they support the events that happen that weekend. Marguerite Duignan, a bartender that has been there for 15 years, said the owner is very excited to have the parade once again. “The parade is great for business; people start lining up at like 10a.m. that goes all the way to Domesc violence workshop in Morgan Park Athlecs hopes to hit hole-in-one with new golf team Students, staff mend hearts and homes on spring’s Service Trip By Joshua Humphry Senior News Editor A select group of students and staff volunteered to aid struggling communities by participating in the annual service trip over spring break. Participants travelled in groups of around five students and two staff to five locations across the US in order to assist local communities. This year, the five destinations to receive volunteers were Baltimore, MD; Glenmary Farm, KY; St. Louis, MO; the Darst Center in Chicago, IL; and Joplin, MO, which was hit by a devastating tornado in May of last year. The Spring Break Service Trips are intended by design to give students a chance to devote their time and effort towards the benefit of others in need while offering new experiences and opportunities for personal growth and development. It is aimed towards affecting both the volunteers and the aided communities in a positive manner. The volunteers that travelled to Joplin spent their spring break helping the survivors of the tornado remove debris and rebuild the town. SXUINTHENEWS.COM By Karina Palencia News Editor Effective Fall 2012, Saint Xavier University will debut its very own golf team under coach Mike Mandekus, who was appointed in late-November. The new golf team has a special role at SXU, according to the Athletic Dept. “The purpose for the golf team is to help increase enrollment and the Shannon Center is always looking for different ways to expand the department,” said Rob Huizenga, assistant athletic director for Sports Information. The idea of a golf team has become very popular around the athletic department and is meant to become a valuable recruiting tool to attract prospective students, according to Huizenga. Robert Hallberg, athletic director for the Shannon Center said that the new golf team will be ready to start next fall. We are starting up a golf team because many high schools in the area have golf. It has become very popular and it will be a good recruiting tool to attract more men and women to Saint Xavier University to participate in sports,” Hallberg said. The golf team is for both men and women. The team will work the same way as the cross-country team at SXU, where both men and women travel together for conferences. By Macy Zamudio News Editor Saint Xavier University students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in a domestic violence workshop taking place Saturday, Mar. 10 at the Morgan Park United Methodist Church at 10a.m. The event is being sponsored by the Church along with the Morgan Park Junior Women’s Club. Michelle White, a chairman of the event, highly encourages individuals to come take part of the workshop, despite the sensitive subject matter. White mentioned alarming statistics of women experiencing domestic violence in an interview via e-mail with The Xavierite. “Studies show that one in four women will be a victim at some point in her life. That means it is probable that each of us knows a victim (whether we are aware of it or not). And as long as there are women and children who are abused, it’s the society that pays,” White wrote. Even though the issue of domestic violence is often neglected and placed in the shadows, this workshop aims to directly address the problem and even give solutions on how the situation should be handled. Regarding several of the main topics that the event will focus on, White listed topics ranging from defining what domestic violence is to obstacles in leaving or seeking help. Other issues that will be discussed include analyzing the size and scope of the problem, realizing what happens when a victim tries to reach out for help, and also learning about various resources that are available for a victim. Along with discussing such topics, the event will also host several guest speakers who specialize page 3 GOLF > Members of SXU’s Service Trip line up for a picture. The Xavierite is published every Wednesday during the academic year. Any undergraduate student can write for The Xavierite. Other interested graduate students, faculty, staff and administration may write a “Letter to the Editor.”

WASH. D.C. (HUFFPO)— The Georgetown University law student at the heart of the contraception debate, Sandra Fluke, dismissed Rush Limbaugh’s apology for calling her a “slut.” She said she believed Limbaugh only apologized after pressure from his sponsors and believes his attempts are dishonest.

EGYPT (NYTIMES)—An Islamist lawmaker was expelled from his ultraconservative party after it came to light that he had plastic surgery done on his nose. He was then accused of fabricating a story that two masked gunmen had viciously beaten him. Members of his former party believe plastic surgery to be sinful.

EQUADOR (WAPO)—Equador President Rafael Correa is continuing his agenda in silencing the press by filing a defamation lawsuit against the three directors of the country’s largest newspaper. Press freedom advocates are saying that no other country is moving as fast to restrain the media as Equador.

SYRIA (BBC)—Thousands of Syrians are fleeing into Lebanon, with reports saying security forces are committing horrible atrocities in Syria. The UN said as many as 2,000 people have crossed over from Sunday and Monday. Soldiers slit the throat of a 12-year-old boy in one known case of violence.

Currently, only 13.7 percent of board members at Europe’s largest firms are women. ”Personally, I am not a great fan of quotas,” said EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding. “However, I like the results they bring.”

T h i s m e an s t h a t t h eabortions take place in the laterstages of pregnancy when thefetus has significantly developed(GuttmacherInstitute). For thesewomen,especially,having amandatory ultrasound

might make them reconsiderterminatingthefetus. Wi th tha t s a id , I c anunderstand how the particulartype of ultrasound the bi l loriginallydemanded, the invasiveTransvaginal ultrasound, canbe rather extreme and ratherfrightening. This iswhy I agreewith thebill’smodificationwhichmandatesanoninvasivetypeofultrasound. According to theAmericanPregnancyAssociation, there aresix different types of noninvasiveultrasounds. Take a standard ultrasoundforexample.Ituses“atransducerovertheabdomentogenerate2Dimages of the developing fetus”(AmericanPregnancyAssociation). Totally noninvasive andextremelysimple, thereisnoreasonawomancannothavea standardultrasound before deciding herunbornchild’sfate. Suchadecisionshouldnotbemadewithoutthemostcarefulofconsiderations. Other types of noninvasiveultrasoundswhichproduce a 3Dimageofthefetus,includingitsfaceandheartbeat,arealsoavailableforwomen. However,since$330milliondollarsoftaxpayermoneygoestoPlanned Parenthood each year, someofwhichisfraudulentlyusedtofundabortions, theprocedureisnotasprivateasitinitiallyappears(Washington Times). Besides, thereislittleuproaraboutthegovernmentmandatingvaccines as a prerequisite forchildrenentering schools, sowhywouldthismandatebedifferent? In the end, this bill is notmeanttoembarrassthewomanorputhertoshame. Itisonlymeanttoshowherthe truth—that there is a livingorganisminsideofherthat, ifgiventhechance, willbecomeahumanbeing. Indeed, how she personallyreacts to that truth is ultimatelyuptoher.Shewilldecideherselfwhethertobeashamedornot. Onemay argue thatwomenalreadyknowthistruth,andIamsuretheydo.Butseeingitthroughanultrasoundwillbemuchmorepowerful. WemayhaveyettooverturnRoev.Wade,butAmericanshavebeenverysuccessfulintheirefforttorollbackitseffectsoverthepastthirty-nineyears. Looking at one obstacle inparticular, six states in theU.S.require awoman to undergo anultrasound procedure before herabortion, and some require a24-hourwaitingperiodforherto“considerherdecision.” Of these st a tes , Texas ,Oklahoma andNorthCarolinarequire women to listen to theultrasound technician’s verbaldescription of the ultrasoundimage. Very recently, lawmakersin Virginia have attempted tointroduce a new and improvedultrasoundrequirement, despiteasimilarlawalreadyinexistence. This new addition is theinclusionof a vaginal ultrasoundto the process of political hoopsawomanhastojumpthroughinordertoterminateherpregnancy. This hoop is particularlytroubling, however, when onelearnsexactlywhatitentails. It is an unwanted foreignobjectpushedintoherbody. Thisprocedureisunnecessaryfromamedicalstandpoint, whichmeansthatitisentirelyapoliticalpush to shame women intofeeling as if they have no choice

in the continuationof their ownpregnancies. AccordingtoaReutersarticle,“UltrasoundMandateHeads toVAGovernor’sDesk,”thebillhasbeenamendedforthetimebeingto include slightly less extremerequirements. LegislatorsintheRepublican-controlled House of Delegatesapproved amendments to thebill this past Thursday. Theamendments include makingan invasive vaginal ultrasoundoptional as an addition to thestill-required standardultrasoundprocedure. It is shocking how littlethoughtisputintothesebills. I—perhapsmistakenly—believethatlawmakersdotheirresearchtoseeifwhattheyarevotingforwillevenbeeffectiveinachievingtheirgoals. Requirements such as thesehave been empirically proven tobeineffectiveindeterringwomenfromcontinuingwiththeirdecisiontohaveanabortion. One of the authors of thestudy and a speech scientist attheUniversity of Long Island,NassimaAbdelli-Beruh, said oftheyoungwomen,“Theyuseitasa tool toconveysomething.Youquicklyrealizethatforthem, itis

These speech patterns areusedasawaytoemphasizepointsandcommunicatemoreeffectively, inveryspecificways. These vocal cues denote amuchmore subtle and nuanceduse of verbal communicationthan young women are usuallygiven credit for being capable ofpossessing. These patterns are typicallysourced to the girls of the SanFernandoValley inCalifornia inthe1980’s. When one impersonates a“valley girl,” oneusually employsallofthesevocaltrends. Not surprisingly, however, the stereotype associated withthis way of speaking is that thesubject is immature, superficial, andrelativelyincapableofcomplexthought. This stereotype is a greatexample of the fact that theway women speak is very oftenconsideredmore important thantheideastheyareexpressing. Given howmuch attentionispaidtowomen’sstyleofspeechover the content of theirwords, onemaybelievethatyoungwomenwouldat leastbegivencredit forpioneeringnewvocaltrends. In fact, in the New York Times article, “They’reLike,WayAheadoftheLinguisticCurve,”anexplanationisgiventotheoverallsocialacceptanceofvocaltrends. Hoping for Bowie’s return

One day, as I was scrollingdown the various statuses onmyNewsFeed,Icameacrossalinkthatled to an article thatwasbeyondfascinating. The link led to aRollingStonepolltitled,“10ArtistsWhoShouldMakeaComeback.” The artists on the list werechosen by the site’s readers andamong that list were names ofpopular,high-profileartistssuchasTheSmiths,PinkFloyd,andLedZeppelin. Topping the list, however, wasnoneotherthanthelegendaryBritishrockstar,DavidBowie. Knowing the Rules to the Game of Power Structure

I recently read an extremelyinteresting essay about educationandthepowerdynamicsatplayinthesimpleuseof languageintheclassroom. The essay, “The SilencedDialogue: Power and Pedagogyin Educating Other People’sChildren,” by LisaD.Delpit, isnotnewbyanymeans. I t appeared in Harvard Educational Review in 1988. Theideas, however, werenewtomeinthatIhadneverbeforeheardtheconcepts I have struggled to putinto coherent thoughts over theyears so eloquently and explicitlyexpressed. One of hermain points inherdiscussionoftheinfluenceoflanguage is that the rules of theculture of power are a reflectionof the culture of thosewhohavepower. This statementmay seem abitcyclicalatfirstglance.Butuponcloser inspection, one can see itmeans that the dominant grouphastheabilitytoframethegroundrulesofoursociety. So, if you happen to beanything less than powerful inoursociety,you’llhaveadifficulttimelivingbytherules.InDelpit’sopinion,youmaynotevenbeawareoftherulesinthefirstplace. They may all be speakingEnglish; the children speakingformalEnglish, usuallyfrommiddleclassfamilies, willbecomfortablewiththeuseofformalEnglishinthe classroombecause theywereraisedknowingit. Dialectissimplytheelementofcultureusedasanexamplehere. But it shows how the dominantgroup’s culture is consideredprimaryandexclusive. Thechildrenofthedominantgroup come into their f irstclassrooms already knowing the“rules”ofthecultureandthereforehaveanadvantageinlearning. Theyarefarlesslikelytobeconsidered “behavioral problem”kidsorthoughttobeslowlearnersbecause the teaching styles, particularly phonics, are gearedveryspecificallytowardsconformitytotheculturalrulestowhichtheyarealreadyaccustomed. Therecognitionofclassroomsaspartof anoverarching societalpower structure is essential inthe effort to limit its reach intochildren’slives. Delpit writes, “Studentsbegintounderstandhowarbitrarylanguage standards are, and alsohowpolitically charged theyare,”as a result of this new teachingapproach.

Thekidshaveamuchbettershot at seeing their place in anunfairhierarchy, ratherthanseeingtheway they speak as inherentlywrong because it deviates fromformalEnglish. Themost effective teachersaretheoneswhocombinedifferentapproaches to teaching phonics. These teachers understand,“theneedtohelpstudentsestablishtheirownvoices, buttocoachthosevoicestoproducenotesthatwillbeheardinthelargersociety.” This last step is crucial ingivingchildrenthetoolstheyneedtosucceedintheworld. We are each experts onourown life experiences. We eachunderstandourculturebetterthansomeoneofadifferentculture, andthis knowledge is valuable in itsownright.
