Nutrition Month 4
Water Week 5
Inside this issue: We embraced the Olympic theme and modelled many of the traits that athletes who
represent our country exhibit. We had a wonderful Quaker Road Olympics here when
there was some great snow still out in the yard. Our Intermediate students did an
awesome job leading the color teams and running the activities.
Our intermediate boy’s basketball team season wound down, with a League Champi-
onship for our Boys’ team. This month during breaks our students had the opportuni-
ty to have some fun in our gym playing mini sticks and floor hockey. Thankyou to our refs— Ryan G.
and Colson T. We are looking forward to determining the Champions for this year’s QHL Intramural
Hockey League.
We celebrated “PINK SHIRT DAY” with great style last week and many students made the pledge to
work towards being kind and accepting of others. Our Cup Stacking team will compete at the end of the
month. It is Junior Basketball team time as well.
Thank you to our Breakfast Club team who ensure our students have a great start to their day with a full
tummy. Donations to the Breakfast Club are greatly appreciated. We have a place on line where you can
make a donation to the Breakfast Club. Please consider making a donation from time to time.
We’ve had some concern over the safety in our parking lot. PLEASE let your child walk if able or if
they have bus transportation—please make sure you access this service. Just a reminder that only those
with HANDICAP stickers, should be parking in the handicap spaces. This would help to minimize the
number of cars in the lot at dismissal.
HOPEFULLY families will join us for our Wellness and Fun Night on March 7th. See info below.
Have a great March Break everyone and we are looking forward to an exciting term 2! Mrs. S. Niznik Principal

March is Nutrition Month
Fruits and veggies are not only absolutely delicious but they are nature’s fast food! Ready to eat and most come in their own “to-go” packages, produce makes the perfect snack for kids to grab and go. They need minimal to no prepa-ration and buying ones in season means you can save some money and shop smarter.
Think you can’t get much produce on a tight budget? Here are some tips to make shopping for produce more easy and affordable:
Don’t shop when you’re hungry and carry a list. You’ll be more likely to stick to your budget and nutritious food choices.
Look for washed and bagged salads, baby carrots, celery hearts, broccoli and cauliflower crowns, cherry toma-toes, and shredded cabbage in your grocery store
Buy fresh produce, like peaches or bananas, in varying degrees of ripeness to allow for some ripening towards the end of the week
Canned and frozen vegetables can be convenient choices
Spend most of your time in the produce, bread, meat and dairy sections
Use store flyers to help you find specials

Prom Project Niagara 2018 – Free Formal Wear Opportunity
Prom Project Niagara is a one day fun free formal wear extravaganza for girls and guys! Students can select their perfect head-to-toe look for their prom, formal, or graduation for FREE! This year, we are offering Prom Project Niagara at: St. Catharines Collegiate *NEW MAIN LOCATION* Beamsville Secondary School Fort Erie Secondary School Inviting all students who are in need of formal wear for their special day! For more information on Prom Project Niagara please call 905-641-2929 ext. 37712, email [email protected] or visit www.efnniagara.ca *Note: for Welland and Niagara Falls schools: bus transportation is available to the St. Catharines site! Contact the Founda-tion to book your spot on the bus! The Grade 4/5 class has been given an opportunity to pilot a program for Brock University with our very own, Mrs. Rigg this term. The students are learning how to use a program called “Scratch” on the computer. In less than 2 weeks, the students have read a picture book, created a graphic organizer that retells that narrative, recorded their voices in 5 separate recordings, programmed the playback of their voices on “Scratch” and added “sprites” (or images) to help retell the story as well. Then they attached something called a “Makey-Makey” (pictured here) to the com-puter. This device is then used to control the program as long as it is connected to something that conducts electricity. Right now we have grounded our programs to us (our hands). The students have really found some creative ways to implement this part of the project. We can’t wait to see what else these coders and inventors of the future come up with by the end of this project!

RESIDENTIAL WATER COMMITMENT PLEDGE
Everyone in the family can participate to help use water more efficiently. Sit down with each other and take a moment to talk about how your family can team up to tackle these water conservation tips. Once you are done, you and every family member can sign the pledge and begin the adventure together! In the Bathroom: • Decreasing my shower by two minutes. • Turning off the faucet while washing my face, brushing my teeth and shaving. • Repairing leaky toilets or upgrading to a WaterSense® certified, Peel Approved toilet. In the Kitchen:
• Not running the tap continuously while washing dishes or produce.
• Running the dishwasher only on a full load. In the Laundry Room and Furnace:
• Running the washing machine only on a full load.
• Upgrading to WaterSense® certified front-loading washers and/or furnace mounted humidifiers. Outdoors:
• Scheduling lawn watering more efficiently and avoid over-spraying onto pavement and excessive wa-
tering.
• Using a broom instead of a hose to clean my driveway.
• Aerating my lawn.
• Modifying lawn space with sustainable Fusion Landscaping ® including drought tolerant, native plants.
Leaks:
• Supporting WaterSense® in “Fix a Leak Week” to correct household plumbing leaks. On the Go:
• Using re-usable stainless steel or glass water bottles instead of buying bottled water.
Through Education:
• Discovering more about our complete water footprint at www.canadawaterweek.com.
By addressing these changes, we pledge to use water more efficiently by conducting the activities checked
above. Signed: Names of family members: Signatures of family members:
