Have you ever heard of Jack Alcock and Arthur Brown? Chances are you haven’t. But they accomplished a dramatic feat never seen before. In the summer of 1919, these two Brits became the first to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. They flew in an open cockpit, in a plane that resembled a box kite with a motor. The faced every possible weather condition: rain, fog, hail, snow, lightning and ferocious winds.

At one point when the clouds parted they realized they had somehow turned around and were flying back towards Canada. Shortly after that a fog bank passed and they were just sixty feet above the water. An exhaust pipe almost set the plane’s fabric on fire. Six times Brown was forced to crawl out on the wing and remove ice with his bare hands.

Sixteen hours later they crash landed in Ireland. A remarkable accomplishment that was almost forgotten eight years later when Charles Lindbergh and the Spirit of St. Louis caught the attention of the world with his historic solo flight.*

There are many times when service to God and to others goes unnoticed. The tasks may not be as memorable as flying across an ocean, but the loving actions remain important and necessary. Parents, do you know the names of the volunteers who keep your child safe and protected in the nursery? Do you know who shovels snow away from the doors and spreads salt on the ice so you can enter the church building without event?

Who sets up your room with tables and chairs? Who makes sure communion is prepared? Who prays over every seat in the Worship Center before the first weekend service? Who prepares the coffee and places appropriate signage throughout the building? Did the beautiful Christmas decorations put themselves up and then box themselves away until next year? What army of volunteers did that?

A lot gets done in the church by a lot of people who don’t seek credit or recognition. They do what they do out of love for God and for the people they serve. We often may forget their contributions and perhaps never even know their names. But the Heavenly Father never forgets.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” (Colossians 3:23–24)

Whenever one of our staff members or volunteers greets a visitor, they often say, “Welcome to His Helping Hands. How can we help you?” Most of the time the visitors are looking for some type of help with food, clothing or household items. HHH is able to help many thanks to your donations of household items and/or financial resources.

In Luke 7:22, when John’s disciples inquired about the activities of Jesus, they were told about the many miracles He performed. Also mentioned was that “the Good News is proclaimed to the poor.” In similar fashion, the HHH staff and volunteers proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to each family we help.

These days, the physical needs of our clients are stretching beyond just the receipt of food, clothing and household items. Their paychecks are not lasting until the next payday. Jobs are tough to come by. Some people have a hard time adjusting to the consequences of past mistakes. How can we help them? How can we truly help them?

The Fresh Hope program is one answer to this question. Over the past months, this program has helped 79 single women with children start down the path to escape the poverty cycle. They are finishing their educational requirements, they are learning some basic life skills, some are finding jobs for the first time and some are finding better jobs

than the ones they had. The testimonies from these women are enough to start a book, which we may do in the future.

Another area of need in our community involves those that are leaving a time of incarceration and will be reintegrating back into society. A few weeks ago, a prison warden called HHH to see if we could help with a particular situation. One inmate is being released this month and is terrified at the thought of going back into society. He has been in prison for 38 years, which is the majority of his adult life. When he leaves the prison, he will have $500 and the clothes on his back. He doesn’t know where he will stay, what he will do or how he will be able to cope with his degenerative heart failure. In addition to these concerns, just think about how much has changed in our world since the mid-1970’s when he entered the prison system. It will be a major challenge just to pump gas into a car.

The good news is that he received Jesus as His Lord and Savior while in prison and reads his Bible daily. HHH is committed to help this man reintegrate into society. Please pray for this situation as we help him through the power of Jesus Christ!

“How can we help you?” The answers to that question will continue to be a challenge as we serve the needs of many in our community. In the meantime, we are ever grateful for your prayers and support!

The Mid-Kansas Bible Science Fellowship is an informal off-shoot of the Bible Science Association which was started in 1963 by Pastor Walter Lang, Grace Lutheran Church, Caldwell, Idaho. The mission of Bible Science is, ”the exchange of ideas by those who are concerned with science developed from a framework in harmony with a conservative view of the Bible.”

We have been active in Wichita since the mid-1970s. We currently meet at 7:00pm on the second Thursday of each month at Central Christian.

Recent meeting topics have been on the Star of Bethlehem (December) and Blood Moons are coming to Israel (January). In the coming months we will be continuing a very popular series called ”Awesome Science” which details how land features in popular tourist sites such as the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone Park can be best understood as resulting from the great worldwide Flood of Noah.

Recently, someone shared this thought with me and it really made me think. He said that it really helps him when he focuses on what he has, not what he doesn’t have. I found this truth to be profound and life-changing.

The Apostle Paul said it this way in Philippians, chapter four: “…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”

Imagine, if everyday you were thankful for what you had, and you sought opportunities to glorify God through what he has given you. Whether it be in difficulties or challenges, you would seek to find the good and to share it with others.

The key is to remove “self.” To truly accept things you must recognize God for who

He is and make Him number one in your life. Realize that your life

revolves around God’s will. God has a purpose and a plan for you. He will be there for you in all circumstances, even when you can’t understand or see what He is doing in your life.

Rest assured today that you can trust in God’s plan for your life.

May your focus be on Him today!

A foreign language, kids going home to empty cupboards, and adults immersed in poverty with no hope of getting out. All of these things are what you would expect to encounter on a church missions trip. But what I am describing isn’t overseas or even in a city in the United States known for poverty. It’s right here in Wichita. If I am honest with myself I recognize that I so often don’t see the needs around me, or I get discouraged by not knowing how to help. I can get so caught up thinking about the work that needs to be done globally that I can overlook the people five blocks from my apartment. Thankfully Jesus continues to provide grace and sends people to help push me out of my comfort zone who remind me to look around at what I can be doing where I am at. Many times it can be easier to go to a new city for a week and be immersed in learning and serving. Every new street walked down and person met is like an adventure. It’s easy to get excited when everything is new, but sometimes I have to remind myself that serving is not about going on some big glorious adventure. Serving others is humbling and done out of a desire to glorify the God who gives us life. Our students here at Central are figuring out who they are and are constantly deciding what they want their future to look like. There is no better time for them to begin to value and understand the people who live in the community around them. During Spring Break our high school and middle school students will be packing their suitcases to stay here in Wichita at our Youth Center. The hope is that each one of them will get to see and serve Wichita in a new way. I have many conversations with students who often feel like they are too young or don’t know where to get involved. Each day of our service week, they will be given the opportunity to go somewhere new and be involved in a different type of ministry. Students will be doing everything from serving food to visiting people living in a nursing home. They will get to see different parts of Wichita that they may not regularly go to, and meet people different than those they interact at school with on a daily basis. This experience will hopefully make it much easier for them to go back and begin to serve regularly with their family or friends. I am personally so excited to see the bonds that are built between students, leaders, and people in the community when we come together to serve. Thankful to be learning and servingalongside great students,

Spring Break Is Here!Spring Break is the week of March 17th this year and in order to give our staff, volunteers and families a break we will not be having some of our regular activities during this week. Friendship Cove, our childcare ministry, will be closed this week. If you are part of a Bible Study, Life Group or other ministry that this ministry serves, please keep this in mind. There will also be no AWANA on Wednesday, March 19th. However, with the end of the AWANA year drawing near, we do encourage our families to continue to work on their handbooks so they can complete them by April 23rd. We will be having our normal weekend programming on the weekends of March15th and March 22nd.

On April 9, 2014 long-time Central members Marvin and Lorna Ives will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary. They were married on Easter Sunday in 1939 at the home of Lorna’s parents in York, Nebraska. Marvin received Jesus as his Saviour at the age of 13; Lorna, in 1958.

Their children are Kathi (Larry) Staton of Wichita, and Kevin (Karin) Ives of Portland, Oregon. They have 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The Iveses joined Central Christian Church in 1974. They were 30-year choir members and hosted a Bible Study in their home. Marvin served as a deacon and, along with several other faithful people, built sets for Central Christian Academy musicals and the church’s Fine Arts Ministry. He also built many of the bookcases in the CCA Library.

Marvin and Lorna were members of the Encouragers Class until their move to Victoria Falls Assisted Living in Andover. Hearing and vision losses,

dementia, etc., have taken their toll, but this couple is a testament to God’s covenant of marriage.

On May 1st and May 3rd, Lorna and Marvin will also celebrate their 96th and 99th birthdays, respectively.

It is an interactive event which provides an experience for you to reflect on the meaning of the last few days of Jesus’ life here on earth, and His conquest of death through the Resurrection. Retrace His steps from the first shouts of “Hosanna” through the pain of the cross to the ultimate accomplishment of His work on earth.
