patternsNew ways of coming together

By Lisa Bralts, Marketing Director

If you’ve been to Urbana’s Market at the Square—our area’s largest farmers market—you know that it seems like the entire community attends. The Market is an area jewel—a place where people come together and connect with farmers, their food and with each other.

As I neared the end of my tenure as the Market’s director last September and told patrons about my upcoming adventure as Illinois Public Media’s marketing director, they got excited. “Wait—you get to work for our NPR and PBS stations?” one asked. Many of these excited patrons who were once new to our community were thrilled—and maybe a little surprised—to discover our terrific radio, television and online services when they moved to the area. After all, Illinois Public Media’s stations and online venues are places where people come to connect with their communities and the rest of the world, their favorite programs and with each other.

No wonder I feel so comfortable here.

In October, Illinois Public Media’s development director, Danda Beard, asked me if I’d host a cooking show on WILL-TV during the March television fundraising drive. Would I?! Creating the show these last few months has been a fruitful collaboration between IPM staff, our listeners and viewers, and several members of our community—including two of our area’s best-known chefs, both of whom volunteered to prepare their own dinner recipes on the show. A pair of farmers and a local wine expert round out the guests, bringing even more depth and community connection. We can’t wait for you to see it!

More great things are afoot at Illinois Public Media. By the time you read this, a much-refreshed version of our website will have launched. A smartphone and tablet app is in development for our AM and FM stations and should be available by the end of March, if not before. We’ll be out and about much more at local events in the coming months, too— we want to hear from you, and for you to get to know us—our new on-air hosts as well as the staff who keep our operations humming at Campbell Hall.

Who knows? Maybe you’ll even see us at the Market.

s Family Dinner Favorites host Lisa Bralts (center) will welcome five community cooks, along with Bacaro Restaurant owner/chef Thad Morrow and Prairie Fruits Farm Chef Alisa DeMarco.

We value that the WILL stations bring people together around issues, information and entertainment. So it’s only fitting that we’re now gathering families around food with our WILL-TV production of Come and Get It! Your Family Dinner Favorites at 7 pm Mon-day, March 4.

Big thanks to everyone who submitted more than 100 recipes for the show’s companion cookbook. We’ve selected five cooks who will share with host Lisa Bralts how they prepare their family’s favorite foods. They will be joined by two area chefs and local food pro-viders who will add additional insight into choosing and using locally sourced ingredi-ents, pairing beverages with foods and involv-ing family members in preparing meals. Sharon Crow and her colleagues at Check-ered Moon in Champaign are providing tableware and other accessories.

Our food professionals include farmers Hans and Katie Bishop of PrairiErth Farm who raise 10 acres of certified organic vegetables for sale locally. They enjoy offering their cus-tomers tips about choosing healthy produce. “The most satisfying part of our job is hearing how people are using the vegetables they buy

from us and then having them come back for more the next week,” Hans said.

Chef Alisa DeMarco leads the kitchen at Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery where her farm-to-table dinners and breakfasts utilize local and seasonal ingredients. “I enjoy getting to know the farmers, artisans and producers I work with and also form-ing lasting relationships with our Prairie Fruits patrons,” Alisa commented.

Thad Morrow opened Bacaro Restaurant in Champaign in 2001 after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America and interning with noted chef Mario Batali. “I strive to deliver superb wine, en-gaging dishes and an atmosphere that in-vites the community to learn about great food,” he said.

After managing Farren’s in Champaign for 11 years, Todd Fusco now manages the Corkscrew Wine Emporium and Buvons Wine Bar in Urbana. “My job exposes me to pairing an array of beer, wines and spirits with foods, plus the opportunity to meet fascinating people and learn their stories,” Todd said.

One channel. Many choices.

Honoring Lincoln Three years before Steven Spielberg’s re-cent blockbuster came to the big screen, WILL produced Lincoln: Prelude to the Presidency in celebration of the bicenten-nial of Lincoln’s birth. The documentary features prominent scholars Doris Kearns Goodwin (Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln) and Orville Vernon Burton (The Age of Lincoln), along with re-enactments filmed at historic sites in central Illinois, to show how Lincoln’s formative experiences as a young lawyer on Illinois’ Eighth Judicial Circuit informed his views on the issues he would face as president. The program airs at 7 pm Wednesday, March 6, on WILL-TV.

Guarding your memory Based on ground-breaking research, Dr. Neal Barnard (above)offers three steps to combat the degenerative processes that could otherwise derail your memory. He also warns against potential threats to the brain, including medications, drug inter-actions, sleep deprivation and physical conditions that can put your memory at risk. Protect Your Memory with Dr. Neal Barnard airs at 9 pm Monday, March 4, on WILL-TV.

Join us for Community Cinema Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines traces the fasci-nating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbust-ers of today, Wonder Women! looks at how popular representations of powerful wom-en often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation.

Attend a free screening of the film and a follow-up discussion at 6 pm Tuesday, March 12, at the Champaign Public Library.

Taped at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas last November, this special cel-ebrates Lewis’ more than eight decades in show business. An Evening with Jerry Lewis: Live from Las Vegas (7 pm Tuesday, March 5, WILL-TV) combines rare and never-before-seen film clips from his personal collection with musical performances and storytelling, along with a tribute to the star’s 87th birthday.

Andrea Bocelli returns to Great Perfor-mances with a new concert special of clas-sical favorites, pop standards and Brazilian jazz from the coastal setting of Portofino, Italy. With 16-time Grammy-winner David Foster as music director and at the key-board, Bocelli is joined by trumpeter Chris Botti for a collection of the world’s most famous love songs. Andrea Bocelli: Love in Portifino airs at 7 pm Saturday, March 2, on WILL-TV.

Specials, public talk and studio visit...

Rick Steves in C-UWe start the month with a new Rick Steves special, Symphonic Journey (8 pm Fri-day, March 1) as the veteran traveler and program host teams up with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra for a musical jour-ney that begins in the United States and touches down in seven different European countries. Steves uses his extensive knowl-edge of European history to offer context for music by composers including Grieg, Smetana, Strauss, Berlioz, Elgar, Wagner and Verdi.

Then at 6 pm Thursday, March 14, at the I Hotel in Champaign, Steves shares his tips and tidbits gleaned from 30 years of globetrotting at a special fundraising event for WILL. General admission tickets at $35 each are still available by calling Tracy Wikoff at 217-333-7300.

Listening to a superstar

Laughing with Jerry Lewis

Beginning at 8:30 pm that evening, we debut two more new specials. In the first, Delicious Europe, Steves savors classic Eu-ropean cuisine—from garlicky snails, hand-made mozzarella and gourmet tapas to savory bouillabaisse, hearty wurst, fresh fish and other regional specialties. It’s followed at 9 pm by Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Skills as Steves reveals his tips for planning an itinerary, hurdling the language bar-rier, driving rental cars and catching trains, avoiding scams, eating well, sleeping smart, staying safe and other information needed to turn travel dreams into reality.

As his schedule allows following the public talk at the I Hotel, Steves plans to drop by the WILL-TV studio to offer in-person in-sight during our pledge breaks.

Danda Beard says her good feeling about the future of the WILL stations comes from personally getting to know Friends of WILL who have been giving every year since she began working at the station 23 years ago. “We know they’re with us,” she said. “They continue to feel the station is part of their lives and they continue to support us.”

As major gifts director for the past 12 years, Danda spent time talking to people who use WILL’s services and support it financially. “I got to hear how important public media is to the people who support us,” she said.

Now, as new development director for the stations, she’s still raising funds for Illinois Public Media, but with broader responsibilities.

“I’ll get to help create the vision and strategy for equipping our stations for the 21st century and setting a foundation for the stations’ solid financial future,” she said. “I’ll be working with other managers to further diversify sources of funding and find new ways to support programs and services at the station.”

For the time being, Danda will continue to be the primary staff member working with long-term donors in the Leadership and Vision Circles. “We hope to fill that

position when the budget allows,”she said.

Having been at WILL for so many years, Danda said she values more than ever the Friends of WILL who have been giving for a long time. “We have an unusually large percentage of donors who have been giving 20 or 30 years,” she said. “I’m especially grateful that people year after year keep WILL in their charitable giving plans and make gifts

that leave a legacy for public broadcasting.”

Danda said the stations have a great start on raising funds this fiscal year. “It’s remarkable that the Friends of WILL made contributions that totaled more than $1 million by Dec. 31. It bodes well for the second half of the fiscal year. We have a goal of at least $2.1 million to help us pay for programming for next year.”

Danda has been serving as interim development director since last March. Illinois Public Media General Manager Mark Leonard said that during this period Danda further demonstrated her broad fundraising and managerial skills. “She is the perfect choice to lead our award-winning development department, as well as to develop a long-range funding strategy for supporting the content and equipment needs for Illinois Public Media’s future,” he said.

Gifts to WILL from your IRA offer tax advantagesLongtime public broadcasting supporters Case and Elaine Sprenkle have let their Individual Retirement Account make their gift to WILL—tax-free. This “charitable rollover” provision—that allows individuals to make gifts directly to non-profit organizations as part of the annual IRA distribution—was recently reinstated.

Learn more by consulting your financial adviser or by calling Danda Beard at WILL (217-333-9393).

Two new shows vie with three former candidates for your vote to join the Britcom lineup on WILL-TV.

The programs begin at 7 pm Saturday, March 9, with Allo! Allo! Rene, the proprietor of a small café in occupied France, is hiding three members of the British military while the German Army is camped at his bar. Meanwhile, he’s also involved in hiding a priceless painting and in affairs with two waitresses.

Next at 7:40 pm, Blackadder II is set in England’s Golden Age and features Rowan Atkinson as the arrogant Lord Edmund in search of grace and favor from stark raving mad Queen Bess.

Then at 8:20 pm, it’s The Café, a new series featuring three generations of women involved with running a welcoming neighborhood eatery. Numerous colorful characters from all walks of life pop in to this hub, usually with comedic results.

At 9 pm, another new entry, Lead Balloon, comes to life. The program centers around Rick Spleen, a disillusioned stand-up comedian and writer who combines a mass of neuroses and petty grievances with a propensity for lying.

Last up at 9:45 pm is Fawlty Towers, headed by the manic and arrogant Basil Fawlty, the put-upon hotel manager whose life is plagued by dead guests, hotel inspectors and riff-raff.

Strengthening ties between radio and TVBy David Thiel, Content Director [email protected]

After 23 years at Illinois Public Media, including 15 as WILL-TV’s program director, last December my duties expanded to include our AM and FM radio stations. As IPM’s content director, I’ll be working closely with our FM hosts and making sure that they have what they need to continue a first-class classical music service. For AM, I’ll be coordinating with our news staff on that station’s overall program schedule.

Our radio stations had been without their own program directors for years. I suspect that most listeners never noticed. Still, it was felt that AM and especially FM could benefit from having someone who could deal more closely with programming issues. This management change is part of a larger strategy of strengthening the ties between our radio and television services.

I’ve got a lot to learn. My background is in television, and while public TV and radio cover many of the same subject areas, they’re quite different in how they operate. I’ve dabbled in radio in the past during pledge drives and as an occasional fill-in host for Focus, but most of it is new to me.

By the time you read this, I’ll have been in this new position for several months. Radio listeners shouldn’t have encountered any major changes in our program schedule. Going forward I do want to expand the depth and breadth of our offerings, and I’ll greatly value your suggestions and advice. I hope that you’ll contact me!

A farm in central Iowa recently sold at auction for $17,000 an acre, even though the land had no commercial value. “It would take a producer 10 years or more to get back that investment growing corn and beans,” said WILL agricultural programming director Dave Dickey. “But there’s pent up money on the sidelines looking for farmland to invest in.”

Keynote speaker Murray Wise, of Murray Wise Associates in Champaign, will address these issues at the 2013 Illinois Public Media All-Day Agricultural Outlook Meeting Tuesday, March 5, at the Beef House in Covington, Ind. Dave said he’s expecting another sold-out crowd from across Illinois and Indiana for the meeting.

Another issue up for discussion at the meeting: should Illinois farmers who long ago gave up raising livestock re-introduce livestock on their farms? Keynote speakers Peter Goldsmith, an agricultural economist at the University of Illinois, and Nic

Anderson of Illinois Livestock Development Group in Bloomington, will talk about

livestock opportunities.

“The Changing Southern Farm Landscape” is the

third keynote topic. John Bondurant of Bondurant Futures

Inc., Memphis, Tenn., will talk about how many farmers in the Southern U.S. are planting corn and soybeans on much of their acreage formerly devoted to cotton. “This is of interest to producers in the Midwest because if a lot more soybeans and corn are grown in the South, it has the potential to influence prices,” Dave said.

Because the U.S. corn harvest in the past three years has not reached average yields, it’s important for producers to know how to market their crop. “With ending stocks being so small, there is no margin for error in growing the 2013 crop. We hope to talk about the realities and bring concrete strategies for marketing that producers can use with their brokers or elevators,” Dave said.

Best wishes to Craig CohenCraig Cohen, Illinois Public Media’s director of news and public affairs, has left to take a job as host of a new talk show at Houston Public Media.

Also the interim host of WILL-AM’s morning talk show Focus, Craig said he could not pass up the “extraordinary” opportunity to host a talk show in the nation’s fifth largest broadcast market.

“I never imagined I would get such an opportunity,” said Craig. “But I take the job knowing that Illinois Public Media’s news and public affairs department is in excellent shape. In the last year, we transitioned our coverage from one dominated by spot news to more in-depth, investigative coverage. We developed tag team reporting efforts to cover big breaking stories, we

revamped our election coverage, and we refreshed Focus.”

Illinois Public Media senior news reporter Jim Meadows is now interim Focus host, working with Focus producer Lindsey Moon.

Illinois Public Media General Manager Mark Leonard said he was very sorry to see Cohen leave, but delighted he will remain

in the public media family. “Houston is a tremendous radio market, and Houston Public Media has made a significant investment to expand their local news and information programming on a newly acquired second FM station,” Leonard said. “I’m sure that Craig will be a key component for helping to build and grow that service. We will always think of Craig as part of the Illinois Public Media family.”

Helping feed our communitiesWith all of the excitement about the WILL-TV production of Come and Get It! Your Family Dinner Favorites, we gratefully acknowledge the following area businesses whose generosity helped make it possible. We appreciate their support, and encourage you to thank them for their partnership.

In addition to helping with Family Dinner Favorites, Common Ground Food Co-op in Urbana also partnered with us to underwrite the cost of eight meals for each pledge received during our Feb. 20-23 radio fundraising drive. In just five years, Common Ground has grown from 1,100 owners to 4,200 owners; now employs 70 people; and has increased revenue for local farms from $150,000 to roughly $1 million as of the end of 2012. Plus, they just celebrated the grand opening of a recent expansion that added a café and a classroom. Congratulations!
