Welcome to theMarch issue of theDialogue! As I write this letter, we’ve had a day of torrentialrain and blustery gales but I’m sincerely hopingthat signs of spring will have arrived by the time thisissue of the Dialogue lands on your doormat. I lovespringtime and the arrival of spring flowers, promising warmer times are to come. I’m sure many ofyou are excellent gardeners with beautiful gardens and that you’ll be aspleased as I am about the return of the Diseworth Open Gardens event inJune. I’ve heard many good things about the open gardens event since movingto the village, from people who live both in and outside of the village, butthere’s not been one since we’ve lived here. This year it is being organised bythe Village Hall Committee and has an Alice in Wonderland theme as well asthe return of the scarecrow competition. While I’m not renowned for my greenfingers (which is why I’m thankful that my own garden is low maintenance),I’m very much looking forward to admiring other people’s handiwork, takingpart in the treasure hunt and enjoying the afternoon tea party - roll on June!

News of the route for the proposed High Speed Railway (phase 2) has doubtlessreached you all. Once again, WINGS have been proactive with arranging acommunity meeting for villagers to learn more and discuss the proposals.Having never lived in a village before, I’m constantly impressed by Diseworth’scommunity spirit and the efforts made by the villagers to ensure that anyplans, be they local or national, don’t detract from Diseworth’s charm. Isuppose events like the Open Gardens, as well as the Village Show and theSchool Fete are further evidence of that boundless Diseworth community spiritand I, for one, am delighted to be a part of it.

Thinking of community spirit, one place which plays a very important role invillage life (perhaps for some more than others!) is The Plough which will beclosed from 4th March for two weeks for the extension works. After which, ashiny new, bigger and even better pub will be unveiled!

I wish you all a very happy Easter.

Diseworth Open GardensSunday 16th June 2013

The Diseworth Open Gardens and Scarecrow Festival is to return for 2013.

As the Church is busy with something new again this year they havekindly agreed to lend the idea to the Village Hall Committee on a

temporary basis. It will be for 1 day only on Sunday 16th June andwe plan to make it another very special day for

Diseworth.

The theme for 2013 is to be‘Alice in Wonderland’

with a Treasure Hunt being added to the usualdisplay of Scarecrows and Cream Teas.

We will of course need volunteers to open their gardens and for therest of us to enter into the spirit of the day by producing a Scarecrowbased on the characters made famous by Lewis Carroll’snovel ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’.

Open Gardens - Please let us know if you will openyour garden on the 16th June.

Scarecrows - Build a Scarecrow based on the Alice inWonderland theme - a prize will be awarded to the bestentry.

Treasure Hunt – Follow the clues to find the ‘Treasure’. A set ofclues will be hidden around the Village, in the open gardens, near thescarecrows and who knows where? We can all join in as there will be

one set of clues for the children and aversion for the adults – prize to thewinners (details to follow).

Mad Hatters Tea Party - Come andtake Afternoon Tea in the Village Hall– enjoy a scone with jam, cream &strawberries, a cup-cake plus a freeglass of Prosecco/Juice.

St Michael and All AngelsParish Church

It was the summer of 1957 and I was walking with my parents, sister and brother along the promenade at Bognor Regis. It was thesecond week of our summer holiday and our friends who’d beenwith us for the first week had just left to go back home. I likedthose friends. I liked them mainly because their son Patrick was acomplete reprobate and in contrast, for once in my life, I appearedas a paragon of virtue. As we walked towards the pier, we passed bya poster advertising the arrival of a circus. My Mum said, ‘Do you remember last yearPatrick saw that poster for that magic show, his eyes were glued to it.’ My sister and Istopped in our tracks. We knew that Patrick could be a bit wild and could do silly thingssometimes, but how on earth could he have got his eyes glued to a poster? How had theglue got there? Wasn’t it painful? How did they get him off the poster? We were baffledand horrified. We poured out our questions to Mum and Dad, who fell around laughing, asthey told us what ‘having your eyes glued to something’ meant.

So, here we are over fifty years later. At the end of this month we will celebrate Easter andI’m still thinking hard about what things mean. What does it mean that Jesus was raisedfrom the dead, what does it mean that he died for us, what does it mean to follow Jesus? After all, if we’re going to celebrate Easter we should know what it means! For me, there’sno escaping the fact that the words, ‘Jesus was raised from the dead.’ mean exactly that. It’s not a picture or a metaphor or a simile or a myth. It’s not a saying and it’s not aeuphemism. It means what it says. Nearly 2000 years ago a bunch of exhausted, demoralised and grieving friends became dynamic preachers, teachers and evangelistsbecause someone that they loved and revered who had been slaughtered by the Romanswas alive: very much alive. They began to understand who he was, that he was no lessthan the Son of God. But that was not all, they realised what he had done, that he, bothGod and man had experienced all that they experienced as human beings. So, when Jesusdied on the cross and was raised to new life, all that it meant to be human was gatheredinto him and brought to new life as well. It was new hope for everyone! You didn’t need tohang around with rapscallions like my friend Patrick in order to look good. God made yougood through his Son. The message these early Christians preached was simple, ‘Takehold of this new life and new hope by following Jesus’, or to put it another way, ‘keep youreyes glued on Jesus.’ After all, he is the way, the truth and the life.

I wish all a happy and hopeful Easter

Tony

SNOW PROBLEMSThe New Yearpresented uswith a differentkind ofprecipitation.Rain is badenough, especially in theamounts we hadlast year, butsnow brings itsown set ofproblems. Anyoutlying cattle inthe fields needextra feed asthey areprevented fromgrazing any ofthe sparsewinter grass asit is covered with snow.

We have one group of heifers and abull in a field at the bottom ofLongmere Lane, and all the time therewas snow on the ground, they hardlyleft the feeding ring containing theirfeed and seemed to be constantlyeating. That was apart from theSunday afternoon when they decidedto push through the hedge and have alittle wander about on the lane. Thanks to a phone call from eagle eyedNoel, we were soon on the case and theheifers were the right side of the hedgeagain. We continued our peacefulSunday afternoon rest only for Noel tocall and tell us that they were outagain. This time Will took a good lookat the hedge from inside the field and

discovered a gap near a tree that wasnot obvious from outside the field. Iwas left on guard by the gap, and Willwent back to fetch a big hurdle. Thiswas rammed into the offending gapand problem solved.

Snow cover in the concrete yardsbetween the buildings quickly getschurned up with the ever presentcattle manure into a grainy brownmass. But on the concrete slope thatruns up between the two largest cattlesheds, the snow quickly becomespacked down to ice by the heavytractor and feeder wagon as it goesbackwards and forwards between thetwo sheds churning out the silage andchopped straw to feed the hungrycattle. This presents Will with a

challenge and he has to get a bit ofspeed up when he attempts the slope, but not give the tractor too many revs,or the wheels start spinning and hehas to come back down and haveanother go.

My hens don’t like snow at all. When Iopen the door to let them out in themorning, they are all gathered thereeager to get out, but one look at thesnow and they change their minds. The odd one will venture out for awhile but soon head off back inside.

I have to keep a careful eye out for thefox during snowy weather. They, justlike the birds that flock to the feeders, can’t get easy access to their normalfood as it is all hidden away under thesnow. Hence foxes become desperateand will be much more likely to getinto chicken runs and kill all thehens, taking one to eat now andcoming back for the rest and buryingthem ready for the harsh days ahead.

Snow also causes problems forgroundwork and crop planting out in

the fields. Will told me many years agothat you never plough snow under theground. I had forgotten this until I waschatting to Ian Dakin about the snowbeing a pain. He told me a story abouthow one year they were plantingpotatoes and a heavy fall of snowcarpeted the field before they hadfinished sowing all the potatoes. Theywent ahead and planted the last rows, and the soil and snow were ridged uptogether over the top. Apparently, those rows that had been planted withthe snow were always 2 weeks behindthe rest of the crop because the buriedsnow keeps the soil really cold andtakes weeks to melt underground.Matt Dakin also mentioned that if youstack bales of straw on top of snowand then come along weeks later andmove them, the snow again will still bethere because straw is such a goodinsulator. Well all I know is that weare glad that it has all gone for now.

I hope by the time you read this thatthe daffodils will be flowering and weshall have some warm sun on ourbacks.

WINGS HS2 – High Speed RailSome say that there’s always light at the endof the tunnel. Others say that the light at theend of the tunnel could be an approachingtrain. Which of these two views you takewill depend on whether you’re an optimistor a pessimist. WINGS is neither, we like tothink we’re both realistic and pragmatic.

At the end of January, as we know, theGovernment published the detail of their‘preferred’ route for ‘Phase 2’ of the pro-posed new High Speed Rail [HS2] link fromBirmingham up to Leeds. The suggestedroute through N.W. Leicestershire came as asurprise to all, not least to our local MP andCounty Council Leader who both came outstrongly against the project. The announce-ment also generated concerns in the villageand many people started to ask questions, including WINGS.

As a result WINGS held an ‘Open Meeting’in the Village Hall on Feb 13th. As I writethis article it is Feb 7th and so the outcomeof that meeting is not known. The WINGSCommittee, however, has met to look at theimplications of HS2 and has formed a view -which we presented to the Community atthe Open Meeting on 13th Feb. This articleobviously can’t report on that meeting [we’lldo so in next month’s Dialogue] but weanticipate that our perspective broadlyreflects that of the Community. In anyevent, we think that our thoughts should beoffered to a wider audience, hence thecontent below.

None of HS2, from London up to Birming-ham [Phase 1], nor from Birmingham andbeyond has yet achieved approvals. Noneare expected before 2016 and the project is

not expected to be completed before 2032.And that assumes there are no big argu-ments, legal challenges and/or otherdifficulties. The cost estimates are alreadyset at £34 billion and can only rise. GivenGovernment’s track record on large scaleproject costs, we can expect this number toat least double. No one will be the leastsurprised if, in the real world, it eventriples.

Will it actually happen?Who knows! We think the arguments infavour are woolly at best and unsupportableat worst.

Will it affect Diseworth? We think not. It is not close to the village, itruns mostly in cuttings behind hills beyondthe village and then it disappears into atunnel under the Airport [are they serious, have they really thought this through?!!].

Should WINGS and our Community opposethis grandiose ‘white elephant’? We believewe should, not because it will affect us [itwon’t] but for four main reasons:-

1. Some of our near neighbours willtake a hit – we should support them.

2. We, and our children, will be payingfor this unnecessary political follyfor many years to come. There is nobenefit and no payback for UK plc.

3. If it is built, the best engineeringsolutions to mitigate noise, etc, mustbe employed.

4. Compensation presently available tothose affected is scandalous and mustimprove.

Page 15: March 2013 Issue 184 £1 - Diseworth Villagediseworthvillage.uk/dialogue/2013/DialogueMarch2013.pdfHaycraft, Nikki Hening, Meryl Tait. ... teachers and evangelists ... Services & Locations

15

So, if that view reflects what the rest of theCommunity also thinks, then how do we goabout addressing this speculative HS2project? We think the answer is simple:-carefully!

It is important to understand that Diseworthwill not suffer from any threat from HS2and its routing [other than from seeing ourtaxes being wasted, in common with everyother village in the UK!]. We will remain avibrant community in a vibrant village instill beautiful rolling countryside. None ofthat will change. The only downside is thatwe won’t derive any benefit from theproposal. If we adopt a view that saysotherwise, then the ‘gloom and doom’ ofnegativity will become a self fulfillingprophesy.

We therefore need to retain a low profileapproach, lobby quietly and effectively, without hysteria and with knowledge. Wealso need to be careful about what we putinto the media, etc. The power of socialmedia is now very strong and so we shouldall be careful about what we say on theseelectronic forums.

In short, we need to protect the taxes we payfrom being wasted, we need to look out forwhat the next generation will have to pay for,we need to help our neighbours and we needto help ourselves. And we need to do it allquietly!

Even our farmers won’t grumble about thatapproach!

Time OutsKaren’s choice:Over the border into Staffordshire.

We are lucky to live in the midlands with awealth of beauty, culture and history on thedoorstep and it is only half an hour away alongthe A50 and A38 to the historic, beautiful andtiny city of Lichfield, created in the 1st centurywhen the Romans built a fort.

There is far more history and wealth of interesting facts and stories connected withLichfield than there is room for here, but take a look at the websitewww.visitlichfield.co.uk or get the Lichfield guide for comprehensive details.Despite its size there is plenty to see and do in the city and in the surrounding area. Wellworth a visit for those who have never been or never stayed long. There are plenty of carparks, both short and long stay (pay and display) and most supermarkets allow 3 hoursfree parking too.

Enjoy the walk along the old cobbled streets to the cathedral, the only medieval cathedralin the country with three spires. The architecture is stunning. The Chapter House of thislovely building also displays paintings, old books, sculptures and some of the StaffordshireHoard. This is the largest amount of Anglo-Saxon treasure ever unearthed, found in 2009,presumably hidden from assailants, prior to, or during one of the many battles of the time. The cathedral is open daily, although it is sometimes restricted during services so best tocheck before a visit. Guided tours can also be arranged on request and there is noadmission charge. The grandfather of Charles Darwin, Erasmus Darwin who was arenowned physician, inventor and I think poet too, had his home in Lichfield, in CathedralClose.

On the approach to the cathedral is a picturesque pond with resident swans, and the line oftrees which border the pond make a lovely frame for photos and paintings of theecclesiastical building and spires beyond. Also on this old street, called Causeway, lookout for ‘The Garrick’ café. Named after the Garrick Theatre which is still very busy, thiscafé is a tiny Elizabethan house, now modernised and charmingly cosy, but still full of oldbeams and crooked doors. The welcoming, friendly staff cook and serve a variety of homemade food, all at very reasonable costs considering its proximity to the cathedral. It’s verylike having lunch in someone’s front room, but there are tables upstairs too. Whilst there

Page 19: March 2013 Issue 184 £1 - Diseworth Villagediseworthvillage.uk/dialogue/2013/DialogueMarch2013.pdfHaycraft, Nikki Hening, Meryl Tait. ... teachers and evangelists ... Services & Locations

are lots of very good cafes and restaurants in Lichfield, this one is for me, even though it’snot posh enough to have made it into the Lichfield Guide.

Around the old market square there are often a number of very talented street performers, always highly entertaining, although when we were last there the highlight seemed to be apuppeteer selling dancing rat puppets. I preferred the musicians.

Beyond the market place, which still has a small but thriving market, there is the SamuelJohnson Birthplace Museum, a listed building over 5 floors with period displays, interactive units, children’s activities and tours. Find out about the famous author whocompiled the first English dictionary (clearly Lichfield was a hot bed of brilliant scientificand academic minds). It is free to enter and is open daily between 11am and 4pm. DrJohnson’s birthday celebrations this year will be on September 21st in the market squarewith live local music performances and other free entertainments.

Along the other side of the market square in the old Victorian church is the Lichfieldheritage centre, with exhibitions, displays and tales of Lichfield’s history. There is also aviewing tower from which to see the spires, a family trail and for children; the mouse holetrail. The centre is open daily between 10am and 5pm with a fee for the exhibitions, butI’m not sure what these currently are, couple of pounds per adult I think.

Green badge guide tours of the city can also be arranged, plus ghost walks and specialstory tours are also held at various times. For instance the Pubs, Priests and ProstitutesTour, tales about the Franciscan Friary of 13th century. Check the websitewww.visitlichfield.co.uk for details of walks, or contact tourist information on 01543412112

There are still more places of interest than those mentioned here, including the prison andsome very nice shops, but after a spell in the city it is nice to relax in the green spaces. So, still within very easy reach of the centre is the lovely Beacon Park. It has nice, easywalking areas, crazy golf, lake, picnic and play areas and a lake side bistro, and in thesummer the order of the day is for rides on boats, mini cars, donkeys and a variety ofinflatable play items.

Alternatively there is the National Trust’s Roman site and museum, Watling Street Wall, just outside Lichfield, with free entry to these ruins. Further afield is Chasewater CountryPark at Burntwood, which also has a narrow gauge railway and vintage steam and dieseltrains, operated by volunteers. The park has no admission charges but there is a fee for thetrains.

Old Rectory Museum at Old Rectory Museum & Wildlife Garden- Near the ParishChurch, Rectory Place, Loughborough. The Old Rectory is one of the oldest rectories inthe country. The earliest known record of it relates to 1228. Though only the Great Hallremains, this has been restored and now houses a fine little museum. Free.

Grace Dieu Priory – Thringstone. The Grace Dieu Priory was an Augustinian priorynear Thringstone in Leicestershire, England. It was founded around 1235-1241 by Roesiade Verdon and dissolved in October in 1538. It was dedicated to the Holy Trinity and StMary. Free.

A local walk - OS Pathfinder 853

A walk of about 5 miles starting inDiseworth. Sometimes one doesn’talways want to get in the car and

drive to other parts of the country inorder to walk.

This one offers a reasonably easywalk across very local fields but givesa quite different view of where we live

(pre HS2!!!).It can be muddy in places.

Begin the walk at Long Mere Lane. Amblegently up the hill and down the other side and cross the busy A42. Turn immediately leftand down a short track to a gate and stile accessing a field.

Cross the field diagonally to the yellow post in the opposite corner. There is a stream at thebottom of this field and the next. Keep it on your right and cross the next field and enter thethird field. Turn right here and cross the stream via a concrete bridge. Ahead is a woodlandon a hill. Cross 2 marked stiles and walk up the hill keeping the woodland on your left.

Turn right at Riste Farm at the top of the hill and the footpath takes you through the farmyard and to fields the other side. The footpath is clearly signed by yellow way markers andafter following these (ignoring the path that goes to the right) you eventually come to alane. Turn right along this lane and enter the village of Belton opposite the playing field.

Head towards the church and Queen’s Head pub and then turn right down the road towardsDiseworth. As you reach a sharp left hand bend there is a track in front leading to MerrilGrange. Go down this track and just before you get to the house turn left and follow the waymarkers again. The footpath crosses two or three fields and eventually reaches Long MereFarm. Go through the farm yard and join Long Mere Lane again which will, of course, takeyou back to the village.

HEALTH PAGEHugging Is Good For You

We all know that hugs make us feel good but the benefits ofregular embraces can actually have positive health effects. Thepositive emotional experience of hugging gives rise tobiochemical and physiological changes. Just ten seconds ofhugging can lower blood pressure and even after the hug is over, levelsof feel good hormones such as oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine continue to rise whileamounts of stress chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline continue to drop.

Hugging boosts the immune system, can help with depression, help us sleep, can reducethe risk of heart disease and may reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s. It can even helpimprove our relationships. Regular hugs can slow down the aging process and invigorateus. Recent studies into the role of oxytocin in the body have shown that it has many moreeffects than had been previously thought. Oxytocin is well known as the hormone secretedby the body during childbirth and in breast feeding, where it stimulates the release of milk.Research is increasingly showing that oxytocin seems to have a wide range of positivebenefits, from improving social skills, encouraging trust within relationships and loweringstress levels.

The skin contains a network of tiny pressure centres called Pacinian corpuscles that cansense touch and which are in contact with the brain through the vagus nerve. The vagusnerve winds its way through the body and is connected to a number of organs, includingthe heart. It is also connected to oxytocin receptors. The theory is that stimulation of thevagus nerve triggers an increase in oxytocin, which in turn leads to a cascade of healthbenefits.

Hugging is natural, preservative free, has no artificial ingredients and is 100% wholesome.Hugging is calorie free, non fattening, tax free and costs nothing to give. It is said thatpeople need a minimum of four hugs a day. Eight hugs a day can help to maintain ahealthy emotional state. Twelve hugs a day may help us to grow and become better people. If you feel uncomfortable with hugging, good feelings can be experienced by both partiesby a few kind words, a touch on the arm, a loving smile, a thank you, or anything else thatwill make the other person feel good. The important thing is that helping others gives youa warm feeling inside, so everyone’s a winner. Just one more thing to remember is to makesure the hug is appropriate, given out of a sense of caring, and ask permission of the otherperson if you are unsure whether the hug is wanted or not.

A Recommended Read from Karen:I had some wonderful books for my birthday this year and justhad to recommend this one, which some of you may have read bynow, but if not then look out for it.

The hundred-year-old man who climbed out of a window andThe hundred-year-old man who climbed out of a window andThe hundred-year-old man who climbed out of a window andThe hundred-year-old man who climbed out of a window andThe hundred-year-old man who climbed out of a window anddisappeareddisappeareddisappeareddisappeareddisappeared, by Jonans Jonasson

Allan escapes through the window of his old people’s home toavoid having to be present at his 100th birthday party and soembarks on a very confusing journey involving criminals, becoming involved in murders and other farcical encounters.Unlikely as this stage of his life seems, it is nothing in comparison to his past, whichunfolds as the story progresses.

I laughed a lot at this book, the story telling is brilliant (I think) and the slight twisting oftrue historical facts, to entwine with Allan’s life story of amazing escapades, which hesomehow just allows to happen, is genius.

The whole of the key 20th century events and persons are within this book; clinicalexperiments on prisoners, atom bombs, war, Stalin, Churchill, Mao Tse Tung, and many, many more. This is all told alongside the weirdest and craziest adventures which befallAllan, including the befriending of the detective authorised to find him, an elephant andother sundry characters who become embroiled in his predicaments.

If you like books that are more than just a story, are humorous, entertaining, wellresearched and knowledgeable, then do try this.

More Local Earthquakes.No-one Hurt.Few Noticed!

Ever since moving to Diseworth and discovering thatit was the epicentre of quite a strong earthquake inFebruary 1957, I have taken a particular interest infurther seismic activity in the area. There have beenseveral ‘quakes across the Midlands in the lasttwenty years, of which I only felt one.

However, there were four small earthquakes, centred on the Loughborough area, in thespace of a fortnight early this year. A lot of people reported feeling the first ‘quake, at 5.20am on January 18th. Lying in bed is the position in which you are most likely to feel thetremors in a small ‘quake. We woke to hear a noise that sounded like an aircraft landingheavily at EMA, but then felt a sharp jolt followed by about 2 seconds of shaking, andrealised what it was. That one was magnitude 2.9, 13km deep and the epicentre wasbetween Hathern and Normanton on Soar.

The second one was at 11.40 am on January 21st, magnitude 1.4, 11 km deep, a littlefurther west, but at that time of day so small it would have passed unnoticed.

The next two earned themselves a rather scathing headline in the Daily Telegraph –“Earthquakes hit Loughborough, but only one person noticed”.

These occurred very close together just before 10.52 am on February 4th with an epicentreSW of Hoby. The first was magnitude 1.5 and the second 2.4. Interestingly they were only2km deep – most of the faults associated with Charnwood Forest are much deeper.

Anyone who wants to find out more should check out the BGS website. ( www.bgs.ac.uk )Based at Keyworth, they keep full records of all earthquakes, however small. There arealso reports of earlier events in the Dialogue – back-numbers of which can be consulted atthe Heritage Centre.
