COMMODORE’ S CORNER
Are we in the middle of winter or is this someone’s idea of a
good joke by simply making every day just like the last—
cold, damp and dark? I suppose I shouldn’t complain but I
prefer distinct seasons. The ebb and flow of temperatures,
rain and snow from Fall to Spring just seems like a faster
route to Boating Season. Maybe I’m a bit more grouchy than
usual because this damn cold/flu won’t let me go and I’m
running out of Kleenex.
On my way to Arizona last month, I stopped by the Boat
Show to see what I could find to add an antenna to our new
boat. (Oh, yes, I found some stuff.) David Welker was there
as well to keep me from getting into too much trouble. I
stopped by the always busy IMC display, where they had al-
ready sold all the Ocean Sports they had in stock. Very im-
pressive! Ron Meng was there, looking good and talking up
his line of boats. I sure do admire his strength and attitude.
Fellow LIYC members, Duane and Lori Taylor’s new boat,
a MacGregor 26’ was on display at the Boat Show and I went
aboard to be amazed at how much space and function Mac-
Gregor designed into this sailboat, which, by the way, can
cruise at 24 mph with its 60 HP outboard. I know they are
looking forward to many years of boating all over the country
in their trailerable new boat, which according to MacGregor
is the best selling cruising sailboat in the world.
I also took a close look at the ArrowCat 30, a boat fellow LI-
YC members Phil and Bonnie Henault recently purchased.
This is another uniquely designed boat with emphasis on
function and comfort, with a separate berth for Sally and Ad-
die. I am anxious to see all these boats at our upcoming
events...hopefully on Opening Day, May 3—5.
Regarding news from your LIYC boardroom, we purchased
and tested the new audio and video equipment including a
huge screen, and, thanks to Rear Commodore Doug Cram’s
effort, we got great stuff that should really enhance our meet-
ings. Continued on page 3

COMMODORE’S CORNER, continued
This should be an incentive for some of you to dig through those old photos, film, videos and create a digital slide
show to share your experiences with the yacht club. And, yes, it’s still hard to beat a good old fashioned Kodachroma
slide show.
Last month I mentioned The Northwest Marine Trade Association is offering “Grow Boating Grants” and LIYC com-
mitted to doing what we could to assist the Lopez Island Family Resource Center (LIFRC) in applying for a grant for
their “Sail Lopez” program. Yacht club members Bill White and Gary Zerbst are on point and working with LIFRC.
They tell us LIFRC will ask for a $3000 grant to be sued towards purchasing two new 420 sailboats that would be
raced interscholastically in an ongoing program. However, an additional $5,000 would be needed to purchase the two
420 sailboats and Sail Lopez is planning to ask the community for these funds. If you would like to help in some way,
contact Bill or Gary, or contact Gene Helfman who is managing the effort for the Family Resource Center.

VOLUNTEER FOR THE U.S. COAST GUARD
Become a Citizen’s Action Network (CAN) member and help the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) save lives and
property, prevent oil spills, protect wildlife, maybe even thwart crime or terrorism, all from the comfort of
your own home.
CAN (also known as “Northwest Watch”) allows residents living near waterways to become associated with
the Coast Guard and help conduct its missions. The only requirements for participating are having access to
a phone and a marine view from your home.
Because San Juan County has more shoreline than any other county in the state, our own San Juan County
Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit often works closely with the Coast Guard as well as CAN participants.
Examples of CAN member assistance include:
1. Verifying or monitoring information during a search and rescue case, especially when the expected time
for USCG responders is lengthy. This can be invaluable when an initial report is lacking critical infor-
mation, or communication with the original source is lost, or when the reporting source moves from the
location.
2. Responding to a call from the USCG to verify a vessel’s location, especially to identify positions of vessels
too small for VTS tracking.
For anyone (even if not part of the CAN program) who sees something suspicious or potentially danger-
ous, the number to call is (360) 378-4151. This number goes directly to the San Juan County Sheriff’s
Office dispatch. (If you call 911 from a cell phone, you will get the Washington State Patrol in either Burling-
ton or Bellingham which can cause delays of as much as 15 minutes.)
To learn more, visit www.uscg.mil/d13/can/, contact [email protected] or download an application bro-
chure. For questions on Citizen’s Action Network, you can also call (206) 220-7237.
THERE WAS A LOT GOING ON AT THE FEBRUARY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING. Vice
Commodore Jim Ghinazzi welcomed members and guests to a great turkey dinner catered by the Islander. As a spe-
cial treat, Islander staff provided carryout boxes for members to take home leftovers for next day sandwiches. Wow!
It was just like going to Grandma’s. Co-host Barbara Reiswig created the centerpieces, themed “The Owl and and Pus-
sycat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat…”, then she read us the “rest of the story”. Did you know the owl and
the pussycat were married by a turkey??? Talk about sticking with the theme. (Thank you, Hosts Dick and Barbara.)
As you know Jerry and Diana Hancock (shown at left with Co-
host Dick Reiswig) have accepted the responsibility for selling
50/50 raffle tickets for what seems like years. (Thank you,
Jerry and Diana.) Then last month they decided to relinquish
that job and go back to the procedure whereby the raffle win-
ner from one meeting will sell the raffle tickets at the next
meeting. So guess who won?? Yup. Diana.
But don’t feel too badly for her. She pocketed over $50.

Deputy Herb
Crowe from the
San Juan County
Sheriff’s Office
gave a very in-
formative (and
entertaining)
presentation on
the Sheriff’s Ma-
rine Patrol Unit.
(See related story
on page 3.) He
also drew the
winning raffle
ticket.
