Josef SUK (1874-1935)

Fantasy in G minor, Op. 24 Pohádka (Fairy Tale), Op. 16 Fantastické scherzo, Op. 25

Michael Ludwig (violin)Buffalo Philharmonic OrchestraJoAnn Falletta

Encouraged by Brahms and Dvořák while embracing the innovative influences of Debussy, Mahler and Richard Strauss, Josef Suk ranked among the most important composers of the Romantic Czech school. Suk’s Fantasy in G minor carries the listener into the realms of reverie with its virtuosic solo violin and rich orchestration. The magical story of the romance of a dashing young prince, Radúz, who desires the hand of princess Mahulena from a rival mountain kingdom, lies behind Suk’s luxuriantly orchestrated suite Fairy Tale. The Fantastic Scherzo is one of his most evocative works, with a haunting Czech tune on middle strings and cellos that lingers long in the heart.

“Michael Ludwig plays with abundant feeling and JoAnn Falletta directs wholly sympathetic accounts of the two orchestral scores.” Gramophone on 8.570833 (Dohnanyi: Violin Concertos)

Ernesto HALFFTER (1905-1989)

Carmen (1926)

Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mark Fitz-Gerald

This magnificent score for Jacques Feyder’s 1926 silent film, Carmen, is one of the great impressionistic Spanish masterpieces of its era. More sombre and tragic than the music for Bizet’s opera, Halffter’s vivid panorama depicts the range and depth of the powerful emotions encompassed within the Carmen story, a tale of thwarted love, passion, jealousy, and violence set in the heart of Andalusia in southern Spain. This is not only the work’s world première recording but the first performance to realise the composer’s musical intentions in full.

“Russian singers and Frankfurt’s radio orchestra lap up Fitz-Gerald’s reconstruction; a job well done all round”. The Times on 8.570316

Mark Wilde (tenor)Maggini QuartetSusanne Stanzeleit (violin I) David Angel (violin II)Martin Outram (viola) Michal Kaznowski (cello)

Best known as a conductor and composer of choral music, British composer and conductor Ronald Corp now makes his Naxos chamber music début with this disc. Corp’s String Quartet No. 1 takes its name from the world’s largest, most stately and regal bird, the bustard, whose soaring flight and dance-like gait are evoked in this fascinating piece. String Quartet No. 2 celebrates a baby boy’s birth with joyful and exuberant music. The composer describes his song-cycle Country Matters as ‘poignant and riotously outrageous’. The soloist here is tenor Mark Wilde.

“The Maggini is colonising British string quartets, and offering seldom-played works at Naxos’s budget price. This superbly recorded disc once again places us in its debt.” The Strad

Cleopatra

Dimitra Theodossiou (Cleopatra), Alessandro Liberatore (Marco Antonio), Paolo Pecchioli (Ottavio Cesare), Sebastian Catana (Diomede), William Corrò (Proculejo), Tiziana Carraro (Ottavia), Paola Gardina (Carmiana),

FORM – Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, Coro Lirico Marchigiano ‘V. Bellini’, David Crescenzi

First performed at the Teatro Regio, Turin, on 5 March 1876, Lauro Rossi’s penultimate opera Cleopatra caught the public’s attention in the wake of Verdi’s Aïda (1871). From the brooding opening scene in which Diomedes foretells the fall of Egypt to Cleopatra’s death scene, this gripping grand opera by one of Italy’s forgotten masters springs vividly to life in this revival recorded at the 2008 Macerata Sferisterio Festival.

“If you like Verdi, you will almost certainly enjoy this performance of Rossi’s Cleopatra, especially if you are a snapper-up of what in the eighteenth century used to be called ‘curiosities’… this would be my Discovery of the Month.” MusicWeb International

Robert FUCHS (1847–1927)

Serenade No. 1 in D major, Op. 9 Serenade No. 2 in C major, Op. 14 Andante grazioso and Capriccio, Op. 63

Cologne Chamber Orchestra, Christian Ludwig

This selection of music for string orchestra, written between Fuchs’s late twenties and early fifties, gives us an opportunity to reassess a neglected and influential figure of Austrian Romanticism. Under young German-born conductor Christian Ludwig, the internationally renowned Cologne Chamber Orchestra revives these delightful works with characteristically polished ease.

43 Miniatures for Guitar

Denis Sungho Janssens

The ultimate violin virtuoso, Niccolò Paganini also wrote more than 100 pieces for guitar, including these Ghiribizzi (‘whims’). Many of the 43 short movements draw on themes by Rossini, Paisiello, Süssmayr, Mozart, Giuliani and, of course, Paganini himself. Praised by Les cahiers de la guitare as ‘inspired’ and Koelner Stadt Anzeiger as a ‘genius’,

Denis Sungho Janssens made his 2005 Carnegie Hall début as a Rising Star of the European Concert Hall Organization.

D.H. Lawrence

Lady Chatterley’s LoverRead by Maxine Peake

Explicit descriptions of sex and ‘unprintable’ words meant that D.H. Lawrence’s notorious novel could only be printed in Florence when it was published in 1928. Lady Chatterley’s Lover was finally published openly in the United Kingdom in 1960. Almost entitled Tenderness by the author, it tells the story of the physical relationship between the aristocratic protagonist Constance Chatterley and gamekeeper Oliver Mellors — which occurs

right under the nose of her wheelchair-bound husband, Clifford. In exploring the class system of the early 20th century, the novel also touches upon the declining coal mining industry: its effect on the workers; and the politics which surrounded it. Yet possibly the most important theme in this intimate and moving novel is the individual’s need for physical as well as intellectual satisfaction in order to feel a sense of completeness.

Dashiell Hammett

The Maltese Falcon

Read by Eric Meyers

Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, first serialised in a magazine in 1930, is best known through the iconic Humphrey Bogart film of 1941. But it was the book that created the classic ‘noir’ genre with its tough private detective threading his cool way between the criminals and the law. Sam Spade, the private eye solving the mystery of the Maltese statuette, was the template for Philip Marlowe and a host of others… but they come no more shrewd and cunning with Hammett peppering the text with one-liners. Not even Bogart bettered the original. An idiomatic new recording from Eric Meyers.

The Life and Works of Franz Liszt

Written and read by Jeremy Siepmann with Neville Jason as Liszt

2011 celebrates the bi-centenary of Franz Liszt’s birth. His life was as daring and spectacular as his music. Famed throughout Europe as the greatest pianist of the 19th century, Liszt was one of the most original and prophetic composers who ever lived. Beautiful in youth, glowering in age, his high-profile love affairs were the talk of the town wherever he went and his generosity to young musicians was legendary. In this account of his epic life, actors’ readings combine with plentiful musical excerpts to paint a living portrait of a highly complex man.

The Eagle of the Ninth

Read by Charlie Simpson

Roman Britain: Marcus Flavius Aquila, a young centurion is forced into retirement after a wound in his first major engagement against a rebel British tribe. It allows him the freedom to embark upon a dangerous mission to find out what happened to the Ninth Legion which, years before, disappeared in the savage lands of the Picts. Will he find out

what happened to the men, led by his father, who never returned? And will he recover the Eagle, the symbol of Roman dominance and power?

This title is re-issued with new artwork to coincide with the UK release of the film adaptation “The Eagle” - starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell and Donald Sutherland – on March 25th 2011.

Vladimir Jurowski conducts Shostakovich Piano Concertos

Martin Helmchen (piano)

London Philharmonic Orchestra, Vladimir Jurowski

Shostakovich’s energetic piano concertos feature striking and attractive themes, with sudden changes of mood between the burlesque and haunting, perfectly captured in these live recordings with pianist Martin Helmchen and the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski. The Piano Quintet

displays perhaps an even greater range of styles within a work of unusual purity written under the looming shadow of war.

Martin Helmchen is a former member of the BBC New Generation Artist Scheme (2005-2007) and was the 2001 winner of the Clara Haskill Competition.

St John Passion

Mark Padmore (Evangelist), Hanno Müller-Brachmann (Jesus), Peter Harvey (Pilatus), Benarda Fink, Joanna Lunn, Katharine Fuge, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, The Monteverdi Choir, The English Baroque Soloists

Considered to be an expressive and intimate oratorio, the St John Passion was conceived by Bach both as a work of art and an act of worship in itself. It has a subtle balance between narrative and contemplative, juxtaposing vivid re-enactment

and dramatic scene-setting in the ariosos and arias, with stretches of exposition of its meaning in chorales. The music is in turns evocative, stirring, exultant and profoundly moving. It forces the listener to contemplate the complexities of the Passion story. Regardless of one’s religious view, it captures our attention from beginning to end. This album was recorded in Königslutter in 2003. It features internationally acclaimed soloists, including Mark Padmore, Hanno Müller-Brachmann, Peter Harvey and Bernarda Fink.

Leone Sinigaglia, born in Turin in 1868, was a friend of Brahms in Vienna and a student of Dvořák in Prague, and was championed by musicians of the standing of Barbirolli, Furtwängler, Kreisler, Stokowski and Toscanini.

The piano music of the Norwegian composer Eyvind Alnæs (1872–1932) shows the influence of Grieg and likewise marries an essentially lyric style with the melodies and rhythms of Norwegian folk-music; the later pieces add an awareness of Debussy and French Impressionism. The works on this CD – none of them recorded before – have an immediate appeal and easy charm, although Alnæs can also indulge in stormy virtuosity.

The long-neglected British composer Havergal Brian (1876–1972) is gradually coming in from the cold, with recordings on Naxos, Dutton, Testament and now Toccata Classics.

Self-taught, from a working-class family in Stoke-on Trent, he shot to fame when Henry Wood discovered him for the 1907 Proms; but he remained an outsider to the British musical establishment, and is as much known for his creative persistence in the face of utter neglect as for the extremely serious and ambitious works that he produced.

First Recordings

This is the third volume in the highly acclaimed first complete set of recordings of the 72 cantatas from

Harmonischer Gottes-Dienst, published in Hamburg in 1726.

The Harmonischer Gottes-Dienst was the first complete set of cantatas for the liturgical year ever to be published, and copies were to be found across Germany. J. S. Bach’s nephew wrote in 1758 that Telemann’s church music ‘is by now so much appreciated that there cannot be many Protestant churches in Germany where they do not perform Telemann’s annual cantata series’. An outstanding communicator, Wit exhibits exceptional attention to detail in his rendition of these two great works with his own orchestra and choir. Passion, excitement, sorrow, and celebration all fill the room with this new exciting release of Biber: Mystery Sonatas by Julia Wedman. Though the Mystery Sonatas (also called the Rosary Sonatas) weren’t discovered until the late 19th century, these master works of violin virtuosity that

employs extensive scordutura (multiple tunings) for the performer have become a favorite of Baroque Music lovers and violinists the world over. After 2 years of research leading up to the recording, Ms. Wedman has brought a new life and impassioned vision to these works.

“Of the violin players of the last century,” wrote the 18th-century historian Charles Burney, “Biber seems to have been the best, and his solos are the most difficult and most fanciful of any music I have seen of the same period.” Over 200 years later, scholars, audiences and performers still agree with him.

BERLIOZ

Roméo et Juliette

Olga Borodina, Thomas Moser, Alastair Miles, Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Wiener Philharmoniker, Sir Colin Davis

‘Davis uses the warmth and softness of the Vienna Philharmonic to make the most of this aspect of the music, where the acuter definitions of a French or an English orchestra might suggest a different approach. It is extremely intelligent conducting. As

before, Davis has the instinct for Berlioz’s long, irregular melodic lines, for the unpredictable harmonic tinge that confers poignancy or tension, for the rhythmic swerves, for the abrupt dramatic contrasts that can move the music in a startling direction.’Gramophone, October 1996

CHOPIN

Ballades and Impromptus

Bella Davidovich

‘Bella Davidovich gives excellent accounts of (the Impromptus), in line with her interpretations of the Ballades. The simplicity and directness of the A flat major Impromptu is particularly striking, and the whole is beautifully impulsive.’ Gramophone, April 1983

London Symphony Orchestra,Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Hungarica, Antal Doráti

‘Respighi’s generous but sensitive application of modern colour, both harmonic and orchestral,

benefits enormously from the sonorous and widespread front put up by this recording, which features the many excellent players of the Philharmonia Hungarica. This orchestra is largely composed of Hungarian refugee musicians domiciled at the time of the recording in Vienna, and it is most appropriate that they should be conducted by Doráti.’Gramophone, April 1960

Piano Concerto No.5 ‘Emperor’

Piano Sonata No.28 in A Op.101

Robert Casadesus, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, Hans Rosbaud

‘Rosbaud shows extreme care, especially in the tuttis, yet is never unduly austere; in fact the serenity of the Adagio’s opening is most beautifully realised. The recording balance is such that woodwind solos can be heard properly over

the piano, but surely what is most enjoyable is the refinement, in both concept and execution, of Casadesus’s playing.’Gramophone, May 1972

Leipzig Rundfunkchor, Staatskapelle Dresden, Peter Schreier

‘Schreier goes all out for dramatic intensity and continuity; and his Evangelist, far from standing outside the action as an objective narrator, is caught up in the diverse emotions of the story (pacing his recitatives with great flexibility)… The chorales are flowingly and sensitively sung, the choruses very secure though mostly very fast and, in the personification of the mob, vividly howling for bloodlust.’ Gramophone, December 1988

Complete String Quartets

Melos Quartet of Stuttgart

‘Their playing is immediately enjoyable for its warmth, its rhythmic impulse and its very positive directness... The Melos, with their pungent accentuation, are splendid in the tempo risoluto variation of the second movement (of Schumann’s Third Quartet) and in the dancing finale, just as they are in the exuberant vitality of the First Quartet’s concluding Presto.’ Gramophone, April 1989

Mirjam Tschopp (violin), Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau, Golo Berg

Klughardt’s music reflects the styles used by Wagner and Liszt, but Klughardt was not afraid to shy away from styles they rejected. It is the influence of Viennese classicism, especially the music of Schubert which is more obvious in his music, particularly in the Third Symphony.

The first Piano Sonata, written when Weinberg was only twenty, is a work of emotional depth and musical maturity. Depth, seriousness, drama and technical demands differentiate Children’s Notebooks from other similarly titled exercises for children from the likes of Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Khachaturian.

Bruch – Vadim Gluzman

Vadim Gluzman, violinBergen Philharmonic Orchestra /Andrew LittonSandis Šteinbergs, violin; Maxim Rysanov, viola; Ilze Klava, viola; Reinis Birznieks, cello

Throughout his 82-year life, Max Bruch remained true to the musical ideals of his youth, formed by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann and German folk songs. As a result, the same composer who in the 1880’s was regarded as Brahms’ equal, by the time of his death in 1920 was considered an

anachronistic irrelevance. Nowadays, however, few would deny that his production includes numerous works of exquisite sonority, beautiful melodiousness and admirable formal cohesion: a glorious irrelevance indeed.

Volume 48 of Masaaki Suzuki’s and Bach Collegium Japan’s traversal of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas opens with Cantata 43, O ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe – a jubilant work intended for Whit Sunday 1727, but with its origins in an earlier, secular wedding cantata.

During his lifetime, Georg Philipp Telemann was widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the period – perhaps the greatest of them all, not forgetting J.S. Bach or Handel. But the very aspects

that his contemporaries admired were the same that later critics would find questionable: his extensive and varied œuvre, the fluency with which he wrote in all genres and styles, and his manifestly modern, cosmopolitan outlook.

Peter Mattei – Great Baritone AriasPeter Mattei, baritoneRoyal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra / Lawrence Renes

The Swedish baritone Peter Mattei has made a formidable reputation for himself performing at the most prestigious opera houses in the world: the Metropolitan, Teatro alla Scala and Covent Garden,

to mention but a few. He first came to the attention of an international audience when Peter Brook selected him as his Don Giovanni, for an Aix-en-Provence production which was later filmed. Something of a ‘director’s opera singer’, Mattei has also worked with Ingmar Bergman, Michael Haneke and Patrice Chereau, and regularly astounds audiences with his exceptional acting skills, coupled as they are with a voice of rare beauty.

For this recording of Francesco Geminiani’s Sonatas op. 5 and the imaginative Baroque setting they create, Concerto strived to ensure that the musicians’ stylistically extraordinary interpretation got the acoustic quality it deserved without resorting to an excessive use of technological tricks. The result can be heard in the natural austerity of the sound thanks

to the splendid dance hall at the Castello di S. Lorenzo de Picenardi (Cremona, Italy), a very special recording setting.

In almost no time at all, Konrad Jarnot has made a name for himself as one of the foremost lied interpreters of the younger generation. Philharmonic Orchestra Augsburg, Bihlmaier

Werner Egk’s comic opera Der Revisor was premiered in 1957. He brilliantly condenses Gogol’s comedy to create an opera score whose wittiness and acuity is equal to the original in every way. The work’s basic “Russian” colour is created by harmonic references to Russian Folkloric music. The CD ROM includes information on the composer and his composition, as well as radio interviews with Egk.

A GLITTERING WORLD OF SOUND - Karen Tanaka is one of the leading Japanese composers of her generation. The purity of sound, the sensuality and intensity in her music has gained her a large audience, and the release of this recording will make much of Tanaka’s piano composition available on one album. Pianist Signe Bakke gives us an interesting overview of the complexity and yet the integrity of Tanaka’s music as it has evolved

Oslo KammerkorHåkon Daniel Nystedt, conductorSoloists: Sondre Bratland, Kirsten Bråten Berg,Liv Ulvik, Helga Gunnes and Bjørn Sigurd Glorvigen

For 25 years the Oslo Chamber Choir has delved into the soloist tradition of Norwegian folk song, thus creating a very specific expression as a choir. When classical music by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Bruckner are combined with religious folk tunes the result is a novel contemporary expression, where two very different melodies, singing techniques and texts are juxtaposed. The STRUGGLE that arises reveal new dimentions of music.

This surround sound recording retains the intimacy of the performance and the enveloping atmosphere that arises when the choir surrounds its audience, each member of the choir singing the old religious tunes directly to each member of the audience. The purpose of combining the intimacy of religious folk music with the complexities of larger religious classical choral pieces is to highlight the universality of the hymns, and the simple sincerity of classical music, finding the common ground between two musical cultures.

In those he reffered to Hector Berlioz, whose concept of an Idée fixe he appropriated like the technique of associative linking of themes. Liszt did not take a formal plan as the starting point for his compositions, but instead used a poetic-literary idea.

In Liszt’s two Piano Concertos we see his both spheres united: the revolutionary new techniques of playing that Liszt had wrestled from the piano during his years as a virtuoso and the orchestra works written on the basis of poetic ideas. His “Fantasies for piano and orchestra“ – these paraphrase’s to other works – the composer rather aimed at brilliance and virtuosity here. Not often

performed this 3CD-Set includes all Fantasies for piano and orchestra as well than the popular two piano concertos.

“...the most honest, politest and most excellent man among all composers …“

No less a person than the old Joseph Haydn praised with these words Jan Ladislav Dussek after having seen him in London in 1792, where Dussek worked as a composer and performer. At his concerts Dussek presented mostly compositions written by himself; among them often one of his nearly twenty piano concertos or one of his numerous

piano sonatas. During his London time he struck up a friendship with the piano-builder John Broadwood. This association between the composer-pianist and the master-craftsman was a very fruitful one and Dussek convinced the renowned London piano maker to extend the key ambitus of his instruments by adding another octaves.

ANDREAS STAIER use for this recording such an instrument from 1806 and is well accompanied by the famous Ensemble CONCERTO KÖLN.

Prokofiev: Violin Sonatas; Works Arranged for Violin / Schumann, Sigfridsson

Henri Sigfridsson (Piano) Erik Schumann (Violin)

Together with Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Heinrich Graun was the chief representative of Italian Opera in Germany in the 18th century. The story of “Montezuma“ accords with the historical fate of the last ruler of the Aztecs. The text is by King Frederick II, Graun had a close friendship to him and became chief of the circle of Berlin composers.

“Montezuma“ can be seen as Frederick’s countersignature to his own fate, which made him into a martial war-prince. “Montezuma“ shows him in a field of tension: thus the artistically-minded idealistic prince became the royal practical politician: if justice is to be seen to be done to life’s reality, Montezuma must die. Montezuma is mor than just a Baroque opera. This opera can allude to the history of its own nation. It directs our ear to the destiny of America and the destiny of Prussia, to the German’s view, 200 years ago, of America, and American history as the mirror of its own.

Peter Johannesson & Max SchultzPeter Sixtus Johannesson (drums), Max Schultz (guitar), Bobo Stensson (piano) & Martin Sjöstedt (bass)

Peter Johannesson and Max Schultz, both self-taught musicians, started playing together in the mid 1980s when they toured with Herbie Hancock.

Around this time Peter and Max performed a succession of concerts with another pianist, Bobo Stenson, who had been an idol of their youth. As they performed together they decided to record an album. Over the course of a couple of years they produced a series of new compositions from which

they made a careful selection for the album. This was recorded in 2008 and has resulted in the present CD.

So not the least of Claude Tissendier’s qualities is that he reminds us of the clarinet’s contribution to django’s music as a whole, just as he also recalls the vital and very special role played bu Hubert Rostaing one of the great masters of the instrument.

After Anharia, an album of her own compositions, Elisa Vellia and her harp propose a fresh approach to Greek traditional music. From Asia Minor to the islands in the Aegean Sea, in the wake of oral tradition, all these songs seem tailor-made for this instrument once so present in Ancient Greece yet fallen into oblivion for a long time now. The ageless oral tradition has been handed down from mother to daughter from Asia Minor right through to modern-day Greece.

This concert selected out of all those recorded during the Les Nuits Manouches Festival at last gives us the opportunity to re-experience the reality of that evening, the art of this singular musician, outstanding instrumentalist and unusual personality. Debarre who began playing at age 8, has performed in several significant Romani and jazz festivals, particularly Birdland’s “Django festival.” He’s one of the most active and requested Gypsy guitar player in the world.

By 1972 we still only had a vague and partial knowledge of Braxton’s more formal nature. So Town Hall was a “coming out” in one sense, albeit an atypical one. Closely associated with the folklore of the Balkans, the musical tradition of Slovenia also has a Romantic branch born at the confluence of the Alps and the Adriatic, between Austria and Italy. Very attached to their origins (their parents are Slovenian), Bernarda and Marcos Fink have selected the most representative songs and duets of a style wich, around the turn of the 20th century, combined the poetic rigour of the great European musical centres - the influence of the lied is obvious- with the expression of its own identity.

Johann Sebastian Bach : Passio secundumJohannem(St. John Passion)

Ricercar ConsortPhilippe Pierlot

Of all Bach’s religious compositions, this Passion is the most touching in its profound intimacy. Here more than in any other works, Bach addresses each one of us, linking the individual to the sacred narrative through intense dramatic expression and

moments of deep contemplation. A timeless, universal masterpiece.

Isabelle Druet Recital : Jardin NocturneIsabelle Druet, mezzo-sopranoJohanne Ralambondrainy, piano

Having always loved stories, words and music, I wanted to create a framework for my recitals and to “narrate” the songs to the audience. Thus this programme, devoted exclusively to French “melodies”, came into being. The art songs presented here take us into a nocturnal world, with stories expressing moods ranging from great tenderness to deep despair.

It all began with Berlioz’s “Nuits d’été”. The first time I sang this cycle I was struck by the power yet gentleness that these pieces emanate. Berlioz originally composed his work for voice and piano and I decided to champion that version for the fine chamber relationship it permits. We have aimed to convey all the intimacy of these songs, attempting extreme dynamics, passages almost in recitative, while retaining the lyricism of Berlioz’s work.

The works brought together in this selection share the same impulse, that of Hispanic dance.

The “Tango Furioso” by Pierre Cholley is the only work on this album specifically composed for organ duet (four-hands organ). Dedicated to our duo, we performed it for the first time on the 15th of June, 2008, at Meaux Cathedral, in the presence

of the composer. No other piece had originally been intended for the organ. However, the transcriptions and arrangements for piano duet (four-hands piano) to which they gave rise, and the warm orchestral colours wich they call forth, make their interpretation on the organ a legitimate venture. A major 18th-century genre, brought to the peak of perfection by Mozart, the concerto was obliged to find new solutions in the Romantic era. Schumann, a celebrated critic married to a great pianist, and Liszt, the international virtuoso, conceived the most innovatives examples of the

period. They lovingly fashioned shorter models in “Concertstück” style, beginning “in medias res”, with linked tempos powerfully structured by a generating motif suitable for transformation. Conceptions to engage both hearts and minds.

In a spectacular concert cycle from January to March 1999, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Lorin Maazel played the complete symphonies of Bruckner in Munich’s Philharmonie in the Gasteig. Maazel had at his disposal an ensemble with a long,

impressive Bruckner tradition dating back to Eugen Jochum. The founding father and first Chief Conductor of the orchestra ranks as one of the most significant Bruckner conductors in the interpretive history of these works.

The chronological compactness of the recording process, which guaranteed a unified artistic signature is the outstanding feature of this compete recording vis-à-vis many of the versions from the competition.

An occupation with Bruckner’s complete works is an overwhelming experience for today’s listeners. With an enthralling effect the series develops from the stylistic variety of the early symphonies all the way to the ultimate clarity of the musical language in the unfinished Ninth Symphony.

Complete Bruckner recording made by an orchestra with an outstanding Bruckner tradition.

The chronological compactness of two months guarantees a unified artistic signature.

The present program is a continuation of hänssler CLASSIC’s exploration of the music of Shostakovich and his friend, the composer Mieczysław Weinberg. The two composers often exchanged both ideas and admiration and while at one time regarded as one of Shostakovich’s lesser imitators, Weinberg’s music has emerged as standing on its own, expressing both a passionate depth of emotion and natural gift for melody not found in the works of his more famous friend. While both works share superficial similarities (each has five movements and is written in a minor key), they stand in sharp contrast to each other. Weinberg’s monumental Quintet inhabits a fractured world of beauty, torment and tragedy written at the height of the Second World War. While Shostakovich’s Pre-Warpiece draws upon Baroque and Classical forms and is primarily a melodic, lyrical work that strikes extraordinary balances between each of the strings and the piano. Founded in Warsaw in 1995, the Szymanowski-Quartet has developed into one of the most exceptional international string quartets of its generation.

String Quartet in A MinorPiano Quartet in G Minor

The Engegård Quartet (Arvid Engegård, violin; Atle Sponberg, violin; Juliet Jopling, viola & Jan-Erik Gustafsson, cello)

A protégé of Edvard Grieg, Norwegian composer Catherinus Engegard produced a large number of works at the turn of the 19th century. Although his style is traditional and mainly romantic, the two string quartets and piano quartet given premier recordings here are full of colour and high-quality

instrumental writing. The music is performed by the Engegård Quartet, which is joined in the Piano Quartet in G Minor by Nils Anders Mortensen.

Thanks to a letter of recommendation from Edvard Grieg, Catherinus Elling travelled to Berlin in 1886 to audition for Herzogenberg’s masterclass at the Hochschule für Musik. Elling’s letters to Grieg reveal a fairly conservative outlook with Mozart and Beethoven as his main influences, and consequently Elling’s compositional style is fairly traditional and never departs from a romantic musical idiom. His ideals are borrowed from the music of Schubert via Mendelssohn and Schumann to Brahms. His output covers orchestral and chamber music, some 200 songs and many choral works, piano pieces and the opera Taras Bulba.

A Jan Schmidt-Garre Film with Sergiu Celibidache and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra

For a full sixty minutes Celibidache rehearses Bruckner’s Ninth – a key work for the composer, who did not complete any more compositions after he finished the Adagio. It is also a key work for Celibidache, who towards the end of his life frequently returned to working on Bruckner’s late symphonies, performing them in guest appearances all over the world with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.

Anton BRUCKNER • Franz SCHUBERTGünter Wand at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival 2001 Live Recording from the Musik- Und Kongresshalle, Lübeck

Bruckner: Symphony No.9Schubert: Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished”

NDR Sinfonieorchester, Günter Wand

The programme of the concert that Günter Wand (1912-2002) conducted to open the 2001 Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival – the last time he was to do so – was a private profession of his faith in Schubert and Bruckner. Both composers and both works were particularly close to his heart. Neither symphony was finished, yet, for all their stylistic differences, the movements that were completed create the impression of

fully rounded works and do so, moreover, in startlingly similar ways. The result is what might be termed two “finished unfinished symphonies”.

Winterreise: Recorded at the Siemensvilla, Berlin, January 1979

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (baritone), Alfred Brendel (piano)

Franz Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise was written late in his life. It is regarded both as a highlight of the genre and as the touchstone by which lieder singers are judged. The song cycle certainly became one of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s calling cards and it is probably this work that made the baritone an international household name.
