If found please contact [email protected] Coastal Path Work On a lovely sunny morning on 12 February, a dozen members of Crail Rowing Club took to spades, rakes and shovels to spruce up the coastal path from the Denburn outlet along to the bottom of the steps leading down from the Watchtower. Encroaching grass and weeds (from the land side) were dug out and removed and brambles cut back. Many barrow loads of Tirr were transported down the hill and spread on the path, which is now widened and looking grand. Many walkers and dog walkers expressed their appreciation, while the work was being done. Crail Rowing Club is a very small organisation and we do all our own fund raising. We are having a Cheese and Wine Party in the Town Hall on Friday 8th March at 7.30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are £10 per head are available from David Jerdan ([email protected]) or from any club member. Donations are always welcome! The Club will be representing Crail in the St.Ayles Skiff Rowing World Championships in Stranraer in July, competing against 60 other teams. We will keep you advised about our events and progress! Crail Charrette Update Following on from the very successful Workshop held on Sat- urday last, when over 100 people attended, on Wednesday evening a further Phase 2 meeting was held in the Commu- nity Hall, primarily for business people, but others as well. Some 50 people attended. As in the Saturday Workshop, the focus was on taking the Vision, agreed at the initial work- shop, as the basis to develop and test a series of strategies with the local community to establish approaches which will deliver the Vision. The Charrette Team will now prepare a range of approaches and options which can deliver the Vision, in advance of the next workshop, to use as the basis for en- gagement with the community. IMPORTANT DATE: Workshop 3 will be held on Saturday 16 March in the Community Hall from 10am to 12pm. This work- shop 3 will focus on establishing initiatives to deliver the Strategy options agreed in Workshop 2. This will take the form of pro- posals, including a masterplan for the future development and/or growth of Crail and public realm improvements to key streets and spaces, combined with proposals for events, initiatives and community organisation. This last meeting will be very important in identifying and developing plans for the future. Charrette Survey Have you completed the Survey? So far somewhere in the region of 250 people have completed it, but we need as many people as possible to give their views. The Steering Committee have therefore extended the deadline for receipt of the Questionnaire until the end of February. You can find the questionnaire at https://crailmatters.com/charrette-questionnaire/ and the paper version of the survey is available at the pharmacy for those who can't/don't want to fill it in online.; to return it, follow the instructions given, or hand it in to Finlay at the Pharmacy in Crail. The Partnership Steering committee thank the Co-op for donating the tea coffee and biscuits for the drop ins and for the Wednes- day meeting.

Balcomie Beach hasnrsquot changed much in the last week Lots of sanderlings and a few dunlin although the golden and grey ploverhave moved on At sea there seem to be more long-tailed ducks ndash on the 10th probably 20 out from Fife Ness ndash in a busy flockwith some of the males displaying to the femalesOn the 9th I saw a colour-ringed juve-nile great black-backed gull roostingwith some herring gulls by the boatingpond at Roome Bay The ringer gotback to me very promptly the follow-ing morning after I googled the ringnumber and type to find their identityIt was ringed as a chick on Rona (thenortherly bit of the May Island) on the25th June 2018 and was seen again atFife Ness in August and now again inCrail 230 days later and only 8 kmfrom where it was born Some birds

donrsquot disperse very far Gulls are long lived and this gull may be here for next 40 yearsso I will be keeping an eye out for it future wintersI was also handed a shag ring on the 8th found on harbour beach I emailed ProfessorJane Reid at Aberdeen University one of the leaders of the project that has been ringingshags on the May Island for many years now to find out its history This bird had led aslightly more interesting life than the great black-backed gull The shag was also ringedin June as a chick on the May Island but back in 2013 It has bred on the island ever sincealthough in winter it has wandered as far as Aberdeenshire It was last seen alive at FifeNess in September and consider-ing that the ring has now washed

up in Crail minus a corpse it probably died soon afterwards If you haveever looked at the shags flying past Crail or hauled out on the rocks atFife Ness you canrsquot fail to have noticed most are ringed with their ownthree letter code and colour If you ever note down a combination or finda ring (often on a washed up corpse after a winterrsquos storm) then let meknow and I will pass it on The study has thousands of sightings now butthe more the merrier because like the gulls shags can live a long timeand finding a ring can complete a history of a bird showing categorically

that it has died ratherthan having gonesomewhere else tolive where there is no-one to spot its ringsIt has almost begun to feel a bit like spring these last few days On Thursdaylast week it was ten degrees and there was a lot of birdsong as I walkedthrough Crail first thing The robins and wrens have been singing a while butthey are now joined by great tits blackbirds song thrushes greenfinches anddunnocks That evening just as it was getting dark ndash now nearly at 6pm ndash therewas a single blackbirdsinging from a rooftop on

the High Street close to my garden It was perfectly still and in between theoccasional cars otherwise perfectly silent The blackbird had the air all to it-self broadcasting its territory and readiness for spring to Crail Blackbirds mayhave the nicest most beautiful song in the world I have heard a lot of thembut still think it is hard to beat a solo singing blackbirdAnother sign of spring is the returning fulmars Some come back to sit on theirnests in February even though they wonrsquot lay any eggs until May Older birdsseem to visit their nests constantly through the year except for mid-winterHow the pairs synchronise their visits to coincide seems to be a mystery butperhaps one just has to wait until its mate appears This might explain whythere is such a lot of hanging around

WILD CRAIL Will Cresswell

with Photographs by John Anderson
