Dear Parishioners;

As we get closer to the celebration of Easter, I want to encourage your participation in

the Sacred Triduum. These Three Days are the center of our faith and the celebration

of our salvation in Christ. Through them we are invited to participate in the saving ac-

tions Jesus did for us. The Sacred Triduum begins with Mass on Holy Thursday (7 PM

in the church). At this Mass we recall the events of Jesus’ Last Supper with his disci-

ples, and the gift of the Holy Eucharist. We re-enact the washing of the feet to remind

us of our call to be servants to one another. As the service comes to a conclusion, we

process with the Blessed Sacrament to the Repository in the chapel. A period of adora-

tion extends so that we may keep watch with Jesus as he requested of his disciples.

This year we will end the formal period of adoration with sung Compline, the Night

Prayer of the Church at 10:45 PM.

The Triduum continues on Good Friday with the celebration of the Lord’s Passion (3

PM in the church). This ancient service includes the reading of the Passion from the

Gospel of John, the Solemn Intercessions, the Adoration of the Cross and reception of

the Eucharist that was consecrated the night before on Holy Thursday. For those who

cannot make the afternoon service, we also celebrate the Scriptural Stations of the

Cross at 7 PM in the church.

The summit of the Triduum comes with the celebration of the Easter Vigil on Holy

Saturday evening beginning at 8 PM. Weather permitting we will begin outside on the

Promenade with the kindling and blessing of the New Fire. The newly lighted Easter

Candle will lead us back into church for the proclamation of the Exultet. The extended

Liturgy of the Word leads us to the Easter Gloria, the Alleluia and the Resurrection

Gospel. We then welcome new members into the Church through Baptism and Confir-

mation, renewing our own baptismal faith. The celebration of the Eucharist continues

as our newly baptized and confirmed Catholics receive Holy Communion with us for

the first time.

The celebration of this great feast continues on Easter Sunday. Please note the differ-

ent times for Mass on Easter: 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 AM.

I encourage you to come to any and all of our celebrations during the Sacred Triduum.

Peace,

Fr. Chuck

PARISH PRAYER:

Almighty God, my parish is composed of people like

me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if

I am friendly. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill

them. My parish will do great work, if I work with

my parish. It will make generous gifts to many just

causes, if I am a generous giver. It will welcome

other people to our worship and fellowship, if I in-

vite and welcome them. It will be a church of loyal-

ty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church

with a noble spirit, if I am filled with these same

qualities. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall

dedicate myself to the task of being all the things

that I want my parish to be. Bless our journey to-

gether, Lord God. Amen!

If this is new to you, come and experience this reflection on the mys-tery of Christ, using scripture and prayer. Evening Prayer is celebrated towards the end of the day in order that we may give thanks for what has been giv-en us, or what we have done well, during the day. The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office, is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with pray-er. The Church exhorts us all to take up the practice and many people now pray the Liturgy of the Hours, particularly in the morning and the evening.

Fifth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2018

PARISH NURSE NOTES: Win the Num-bers Game If you know your numbers for cholesterol, BP, BMI are creeping up in-stead of staying stable or decreasing, It may be time to look at ways to win this

numbers game! Of course if you smoke, that needs to be the highest priority to fix. There is plenty of free help available if you are ready to KICK the HABIT!! Otherwise, start making small changes to move in the right direction. Consider eliminating one soda a day and switching to water. Small changes can reap promising results. A couple of others are to MOVE. The Heart Assoc. recom-mends 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. Sound too intimidating? How about three 10 minute intervals a couple days a week and build up from there. Even that will be an accomplishment. EAT REAL FOOD - avoid processed foods whenever possible. Cooking an egg or piece of chicken is pretty easy. Buy some salad and fresh fruit and you are good to go. Frozen veggies and fruit are just as nutritious because they are frozen at their peak. Call your parish nurse, Marybeth Terrell at 301-845-6572, if you have questions.

NOTES ON SOCIAL CONCERNS BY DEACON JERRY: We hope the coins from your Lenten sacrifices are jiggling in your CRS Rice Bowls. We will collect those Bowls the weekend after Easter.

BLESSING BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS will be available after Masses the weekend of March 24/25, near the food pantry shelves. Thanks to the generosity of so many parishioners we will have 200 bags available. Bags will be packed by parish volunteers on March 18th, and include notes made by the children in Faith Formation and the youth in Youth Ministry. Please take only as many bags as you need to give to a homeless person you will see. Any bags left over will be given to the Freder-ick Rescue Mission and St Vincent DePaul.

MARYLAND MARCH FOR LIFE: Thanks to all who went down to Annapolis with our letters to our Frederick delegates, and thanks to all who signed them! If you wish to contact our delegates about our pro-life legislation, District 4 Senator Hough (410-841-3704) and District 4 Delegates, Kathy Afzali (410-841-3288), Barrie Ciliberti (410-841-

3080) and David Vogt (410-841-3118) are support-ive of critical legislation: the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act, Parental consent, Viability Bill, and the Fetal Homicide Bill. You can thank them for their sup-port! District 3—Senator Ron Young (410-841-

3575), Delegates Carol Krimm (410-841-3472) & Karen Young (410-841-3436) could be encouraged to consider the pro-life option.

COMMUNITY LIFE

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: In the Gospel today, Jesus says “Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.” When we help the poor we are truly followers of Jesus, serv-ant of the poor. As you place your gift in the Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them Easter hope and joy. For info call 301-662-4676.

RED CROSS BLOODMOBILE: Thanks to all who gave the gift of life at our blood drive!

PRO-LIFE SPEAKER: Fri., April 20th at 10 am after Mass and Rosary. Reggie Little John will speak on forced abortion in China.

SINGLE AGAIN CONFERENCE The Single Again Conference will take place Saturday, April 28 at Our Lady of the Fields Church, Millersville. The Confer-ence is a day of prayer, workshops and fellowship for separated, divorced, and bereaved. More information at facebook.com/singleagainministry.
