A few years ago we learned “Though You Slay Me” which reminds us that even from ancient times, Job understood that he would see his Savior face to face. The year after that we learned “Man of Sorrows,” which brings to the forefront just how much it cost to provide us a path to eternal life. In this season of preparation for the glorious celebration that we'll share on Easter morning, we'll join our voices to sing: "Oh to see the dawn of the darkest day Christ on the road to Calvary." As we walk these remaining days to Easter, let us remember the road that Jesus walked — crown of thorns on His blessed head and heavy cross on His back — to deliver us from that darkness. Our song of the month for March is “The Power of the Cross” by Keith Getty and Stewart Townend.

The song was first published in 2005, but I only stumbled onto it in the last few months.

These two gifted musicians have collaborated extensively in the last 20 years and, whether you know it or not, you're probably pretty familiar with their work. (“In Christ Alone” is their most famous hymn.)

Furthermore, Getty is a testament to the global nature of worship these days, having been born and spending most of his working life in Ireland.

This worship song continues a pattern from the last few years of learning a new song with powerful Soteriological (i.e. salvation) imagery in its poetry.

A few years ago we learned “Though You Slay Me” which reminds us that even from ancient times, Job understood that he would see his Savior

face to face. The year after that we learned “Man of Sorrows,” which brings to the forefront just how much it cost to provide us a path to eternal life.

In this season of preparation for the glorious celebration that we'll share on Easter morning, we'll join our voices to sing:

"Oh to see the dawn of the darkest day Christ on the road to Calvary."

As we walk these remaining days to Easter, let us remember the road that Jesus walked — crown of thorns on His blessed head and heavy cross on His back — to deliver us from that darkness.

CHURCH LIFE

Designing for spiritual growth The four-week session on designing a personal plan

for spiritual growth, led by Pastor Dan, continues this week.

During this time you will examine daily schedules, significant relationships, times of worship and study, work and hobbies, recreation and service, to discern the rhythm of your life.

Through times of prayer, study, discussion, and work done during the week you will begin to craft your own personal plan for spiritual growth.

Join us in Room 12 of the Christian Education building on the following Thursdays: March 19 and April 2. It will run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. each session.

As we move toward the Fourth Sunday of Lent, our phrase to think and meditate upon this week is “Lord, Son of David.”

Each week Pastor Dan will provide a word or phrase for us to spend the week contemplating.

It is a part of the Lenten sermon series, which focuses on Jesus’ healing of two blind men in Matthew 20:29-34.

When we gather for worship, the sermon will

draw upon that specific phrase or word.

As a community we will spend the weeks of Lent reflecting upon the same ideas from one passage of scripture.

Invite the Spirit of God to speak to our hearts and minds through this special season together.

‘Lord, Son of David’

Mission advocates still needed

Out of an abundance of caution, First Baptist will not hold the senior luncheon this month.

Our first priority is keeping everyone safe, as the community works together to control the spread of the novel coronavirus. Thank you for your understanding.

No senior luncheon in March
