From the Pastor’s Desk

There’s an old story that I think I first read in one of Fr. Anthony de Mello’s collections. The revered teacher welcomes a new prospective student, and offers him tea. At table, the teacher begins to pour, and keeps pouring as the tea runs over the top of the cup, fills the saucer, and begins to run out onto the table. When the tea begins to drip onto the floor, the young man could no longer contain himself, and shouts, “Stop, the cup is full!”. At that the teacher set down the teapot, looked searchingly at the young seeker, and said, “You come to me to be taught. Yet you, like the teacup, are so full of yourself that there is no room in your soul for what I might teach.”

What fills us up? Our idea, and concepts, our wants and desires, our dreams and hopes, and certainly our fears, anxieties and resentments. Are we any more open to being taught than this young man? Are we any less full than the overflowing teacup?

And so enters Lent. A major Lenten theme is a sojourn in the desert, surrounded by emptiness. We are invited to create something of that emptiness within ourselves with prayer, and acts of charity, and certainly self-denial. Hopefully, our penance and fasting will make us aware that we did not really need what we so earnestly longed for and felt we deserved. It’s about doing with less, and becoming less, in order that we may be filled.

You see, this desert emptiness which Lent intends to create within us is not meant to remain empty. Quite to the contrary, it is meant to be filled. But with what? Just as the young man desired to be filled with wis-dom by sitting at the feet of the teacher, so we desire to be filled with God, having created space for our Creator to enter in. As St. Paul says, “It is not I who live, but Christ who lives in me.)

There is no better time to bring our emptiness to God than during the last week of Lent, and in particular the three days we call the Triduum. On Holy Thursday evening, and on Good Friday, and especially at the Easter Vigil on Saturday night, we enter ever more deeply in to the self-emptying of Jesus himself, even unto death on the cross. St. Paul teaches that Jesus did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but rather emp-tied himself, becoming one like us in all things but sin. As a result, he conquered death, and restored life through the Resurrection, on that first Easter Sunday morning.

This gift of new life, won for us in the Paschal Mystery, is what God desires to pour forth into our hearts. He wants to fill us with his life and love that was revealed in Christ Jesus, the Beloved Son of the Father.

Is there room for God’s abundant life and love in your heart, your soul, your life?
