From the Pastor...

Lent got off to a good start in our parish. All five Masses on Ash Wednesday were well-a ended, as was the Day of Recollec on and

parish retreat last weekend. About 75 people a ended last Friday’s Sta ons of the Cross and another 30 people joined the Dominican friars last Sunday evening at 5:00 pm for Evening Prayer. Then, our parish retreat with Fr. Vinny Fortunato, OFMCap, was a big hit with about 100 people coming every night. The next special Lenten event is the four-part lecture series “A Lenten Journey: Rediscovering Faith, Hope and Charity” co-sponsored by the Catholic moment “Communion and Libera on” and St. Vincent Ferrer Parish. The lectures are on March 22, 29, April 5 and 12 at 7:00 pm in the Cabrini Room. Speakers are coming in from across the country. More informa on is available elsewhere in the bulle n. Here’s another way in which you can jump-start your spiritual life this Lent: sign up for an hour of adora on in our Eucharis c Adora on Chapel, behind the St. Joseph altar here in the church. So many people have told me how spiritually enriching the experience of private prayer and just being in the presence of the Lord has been for them. Everyone is free to drop in for a minute or an hour any me on Mondays and Tuesdays between 12:30 pm and 8:30 pm. (Laminated prayer cards are available with sample medita ons if you don’t know where to begin.) At this me we have a par cular need for people to commit for at least an hour of prayer on Mondays from 2:30 to 3:30 and on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 and 5:30 to 6:30. If you can commit to one or more of these me slots, please phone Mary Saldana in the parish office weekday mornings at (708) 366-7090 x100. We’re all looking forward to the groundbreaking ceremony for our new mul purpose hall on Sunday, March 26th at the 11:00 am Mass. Fr. Louis Morrone, OP, Vicar Provincial, will do the honors. Then, at 3:00 pm the same day the Oak Park Chorale will perform a benefit concert in support in support of music educa on at SVF School at 3:00 pm in the church. Everyone is invited. Update on our search for a new principal: If all goes well, by the

me you read this the Principal Search Commi ee should have interviewed the first three applicants for the posi on of SVF School Principal. As previously announced, Dr. Charles Terry, our present principal, has announced his re rement. Please pray that a worthy successor to Dr. Terry can be found. Maintenance: At long last we’ve repaired and stabilized the outdoor iron railings around the church. I want to thank parishioner John Murphy for helping with this project. For more than a year we’ve tried to find someone who would take this project on. Have a great week! Fr. Tom McDermo , OP

Reflection on Sunday’s Readings

March 12, 2017 It is good for us to be here

First Reading (Gen 12:1-4). How does God act in history? God acts by calling key individuals, and it is by their responses that a channel for execu on of God’s purpose is carved out in the world. Abraham, was one of those key individuals. The call of Abraham marks the beginning of a special rela onship between God and man. In leaving his country, clan and family, and se ng out for an unknown des na on, Abraham demonstrates extraordinary faith in God’s guidance. Through his faith the whole human race would be blessed because from his descendants would come the Saviour of all people. (That Saviour is revealed in the Gospel). Second Reading (Tim 1:8-10). This picks up the theme of call, and speaks of the call to be a Chris an. This call is based, not on our merits, but on God’s grace granted to us in Christ. The power of God and the vision of God’s grace granted to us in Christ. The power of God and the vision of immortality enable the Chris an to face the sufferings which faithfulness to the Gospel inevitably brings (just as the ‘Tabor’ experience helped Jesus to face his passion). Gospel (Mt 17:1-9). The story of the

transfigura on, like that of the

tempta ons, is a contrived story. It is

no longer possible to say what

happened on the mountain. But

something did happen, because years

later Peter s ll remembered it and

wrote: “We were eye-witnesses of his

glory on the mountain’ (2 Pet 1:17-18)

St. Patrick

FeastDay:March17th

St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints. Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 461.Along with St. Nicholas and St. Valen ne, the secular world shares our love of these saints. This is also a day when everyone's Irish. There are many legends and stories of St. Patrick, but this is his story. Patrick was born around 385 in Scotland, probably Kilpatrick. His parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Romans living in Bri an in charge of the colonies. As a boy of fourteen or so, he was captured during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. Ireland at this me was a land of Druids and pagans. He learned the language and prac ces of the people who held him.

During his cap vity, he turned to God in prayer. He wrote: "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same." "I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain." Patrick's cap vity lasted un l he was twenty, when he escaped a er having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Bri an, where he reunited with his family. He had another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling out to him "We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once more." He began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years. Later, Patrick was ordained a bishop, and was sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. He arrived in Ireland March 25, 433, at Slane. One legend says that he met a chie ain of one of the tribes, who tried to kill Patrick. Patrick converted Dichu (the chie ain) a er he was unable to move his arm un l he became friendly to Patrick. Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland, conver ng many. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country. Kings, their families, and en re kingdoms converted to Chris anity when hearing Patrick's message. Patrick by now had many disciples, among them Beningnus, Auxilius, Iserninus, and Fiaac, (all later canonized as well). Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. A er years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461. He died at Saul, where he had built the first church. Why a shamrock? Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, and has been associated with him and the Irish since that me. In His Footsteps: Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devo on to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. He feared nothing, not even death, so complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission.
