MapStory.org empowers students, teachers and practitioners to discover, peer review and createmaps that also tell stories about change in place over time, ultimately improving our collectiveunderstanding of global dynamics, worldwide, over the course of history. MapStory.org is operatedas an open source project, free to the world, and by the MapStory Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofitorganization. The first version of MapStory.org launched in April, 2012, and is under constantdevelopment.

MapStory Teaching Fellows are K-12 educators based in Chicago, IL or Washington, DC selectedfor their demonstrated ability to incorporate innovative content and pedagogy into their teachingpractice. Fellows will receive a $1,000 grant to support implementation of a MapStorytelling project

as part of an in-class lesson, during an afterschool program, or as an independent research effortthat investigates the way MapStory.org does, and could, be used to improve student engagementand achievement across the disciplines. As they work, Fellows will serve as advisors to theMapStory Foundation, helping shape future development of the MapStory.org platform.

This fellowship is both a meritorious award for field leaders, and a request for expertise. AlthoughMapStory.org aims to serve a variety of audiences, its core mission is as an educational utility thatimproves the way our students learn about a changing world. Fellows will ensure that teacher voiceis at the core of our work, shaping the agenda for future development of MapStory.org

The Fellowship period will last three months from April through June 2013. We will select threeFellows from Chicago, IL and three from Washington, DC. We are limiting participation to definedgeographies to enable participating teachers to meet face-to-face during the Fellowship period.Depending on this first experience, we may expand the program in future years.

In early April 2013, Fellows will participate in a half-day in-person session with MapStory staff toreceive training on the MapStory platform and discuss their project plans with one another. Fellowswill implement projects and participate in monthly check-in calls with MapStory Foundation staff inApril and May, and at a final in-person reflection session in June 2013. Dates for check-in callsand in-person convenings will be scheduled with input from Fellows to allow everyone toparticipate. Projects might take a variety of forms, including afterschool group activities, new in-

class lessons, restructured existing lessons, or independent research and design efforts based onthe teachers interests, skills and school situation. However, our preference is that students areinvolved in the work directly somehow.

If youre interested, email [email protected] prior to with a resume andbrief statement (no more than a page) that discusses your interest in the program and projects youmight undertake if afforded this Fellowship opportunity. Fellows will be determined and announcedby early March 2013.
