Thixotropic epoxyadhesive for therestoration of timberstructural elements
WHERE TO USEBonding new timber parts to existing timber structuresafter the removal of decayed parts. Filling holes both inthe existing timber structural element that needs to berepaired and in the new wood element in order toanchor connecting reinforcing rods and/or plates.
Some application examplesRepairing fir, pine, poplar, oak, chestnut and other typesof timber beams, trusses and columns that need to bereconstructed by adding timber elements which mightneed to be anchored to the original element with metalor composite material rods or plates.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICSMapewood Paste 140 is a solvent free epoxy adhesiveof a thixotropic consistency composed of two pre-measured parts (Part A = resin and Part B = hardener),prepared according to a formula developed in the Mapeiresearch laboratories.
Mapewood Paste 140 is available in two packages: thefirst is the traditional packaging, made up of two plasticdrums containing the two parts. Once the two partshave been mixed, the product can be applied manuallywith a flat trowel. The parts of the second packagingmust first be manually mixed and then can be appliedby extrusion from a cartridge (see the Preparing theproduct paragraph).
Mapewood Paste 140 can be easily applied both onvertical and horizontal surfaces. It hardens withoutshrinkage becoming a paste with excellent bonding andmechanical strength compatible with wood.
RECOMMENDATIONS Apply Mapewood Paste 140 on the wood surface
only after having treated them with MapewoodPrimer 100 in cases of wood damaged by decay orinsects or high density wood (oak and chestnut).
Do not apply Mapewood Paste 140 at temperaturesbelow +10C.
Do not apply Mapewood Paste 140 on wet surfaces.
APPLICATION PROCEDUREPreparing the substrateSecure the structure and remove the decayed part ofthe beam, column or truss with a clean cut. Prepare the new wood element choosing a wood similarto the existing one or with improved durability andmechanical strength. Prepare the slots for the connecting elements bycreating suitably sized hollows or holes both in theelement that needs consolidation and in the new woodelement. Suitable elements are: threaded rods or rodirons, steel plates, other products in composite materialwhich have been checked for good superficial bonding.
When sawing and drilling try to avoid the formation ofsplinters, superficial burns and the creation of areaswith broken or flattened fibres.
In order to avoid the above mentioned, it isrecommended to adopt the following measures:
always use sharpened sawing tools of the correct sizeand form (never use steel or cement blades, noses orcutters);

use suitable supports and guides so thetools do not deviate when the blade hitsknots or cross grains;
remove shavings frequently in order toavoid them from pressing onto the surfacesand provoking friction and overheating;
after the sawing stage, clean the surfacesfrom dust, shavings and splinters;
preferably prepare the wooden surfaceswithin 24 hours prior to applyingMapewood Paste 140. This is to avoidsuperficial oxidation, contact with pollutantsand dust deposits.
If necessary apply one or two coats(depending on the type of wood) ofMapewood Primer 100 on the sides of theholes and on the cut surfaces of the decayedwood and on the new wood element in orderto fix loose fibres and improve the bonding ofMapewood Paste 140. It is recommended toread the instructions of the product on thetechnical data sheet before its use. Waitapproximately 5 hours at +20C beforerepairing the damaged element by anchoring the new reinforcing rod withMapewood Paste 140.
Note: The new wood element must beacclimatised before bonding them withMapewood Paste 140 or treating them withMapewood Primer 100. It is absolutelynecessary that the moisture content of theexisting structural element and the new woodelement be 3% with respect to that ofequilibrium in the service condition in order tominimise the dimensional variations andconsequent tension development betweenthe parts that need to be bonded.
Preparing the productWhen using the packaging with the twoplastic drums, the two parts of MapewoodPaste 140 must be mixed together. Pour Part B (white) into Part A (brown) and mixwith a drill fitted with a whip until the resin iscompletely smooth (an even light browncoloured paste). The packages are alreadypre-measured. Avoid using partial quantitiesof the product in order to avoid accidentalmeasuring ratio errors and the incompletehardening of Mapewood Paste 140. If partialquantities are necessary, use an electronicprecision scale.
When using the packaging made up the twoplastic jars and the cartridge, proceed asfollows: pour Part B (white) in the jarcontaining Part A (brown) and mix with asmall utensil fitted with a whip. Mix until the product is completelyhomogeneous (an even light brown colour).Insert the extrusion disk into the jarcontaining the mixed product making sure torest the disk onto the material. Cut the empty cartridge above the end of thethread and rest it on the extrusion disk. Apply a slight pressure towards the bottom ofthe jar so the Mapewood Paste 140penetrates into the cartridge. Position thecartridge and screw on the nozzle, whichshould be cut at 45 corresponding to thedesired size. Insert the cartridge into the gunand extrude Mapewood Paste 140.
Applying the pasteRespecting the working time in relation totemperature, fill the hole or cavity made onone side of the wooden piece (beam, column,truss) with Mapewood Paste 140. Positionthe connecting rod or plate. Near thereinforcing rod to the element that needsrepair making sure the cut surfaces perfectlyfit. If cavities have been made for placing theconnecting elements (for example forpositioning the plates or for lateralaccessibility only), it is recommended to:
position and fix the new wood element inthe prepared place making sure that thecontact point between the new woodelement and the element that needs to beconsolidated is the widest possible;
trowel on the correct amount of Mapewood Paste 140 in the spaceprepared for the connecting element;
inset the connecting element;
seal the space prepared for the connectingelement with a correctly sized wooden fillet;
remove any excess Mapewood Paste 140with a trowel.
In case the spaces prepared for theconnecting elements are holes (for exampleto position rods or in situations where theaccess is only at the headpiece), it isrecommended to:
place the connecting elements in thespaces inside the section that needs to beconsolidated. Inject Mapewood Paste 140through a specially made small lateral hole;
position and fix the new wood element inthe space making sure the contact pointbetween the new wood element and theelement that needs to be consolidated isthe widest possible;
inject Mapewood Paste 140 in the spacefor the connecting element inside the newwood element.
Note: where possible, it is alwaysrecommended to apply MapewoodPaste 140 on both the surfaces to bebonded. Remove any excess MapewoodPaste 140 with a trowel.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR THEPREPARATION AND APPLICATIONMapewood Paste 140 in repeated orprolonged contact with the skin could causesensitivity.
Always wear protective gloves and goggleswhile using the product. In case of contactwith the skin, wash with plenty of water andsoap. If any symptoms of sensitivity shouldarise, consult a doctor.
In case of contact with the eyes wash withrunning water and consult a doctor. Use inventilated areas.
CleaningDue to Mapewood Gel 120s high adhesivestrength also onto metal, it is recommendedto wash working tools with solvents (ethyl
