ODOR handy
Please read these instructions carefully before using the device and follow them exactly!

Note for the mercaptan version of ODOR handy: This manual only refers to the THT device, although it may also be used for mercaptan devices (TBM, Scentinel E®, EM). Please note the following differences:
?? The display of the mercaptan device shows one decimal place ?? The design of the mercaptan sensor differs from the THT sensor and has a longer response time
(measurement period 5 - 10 min). For this sensor, the CE value is irrelevant. The mercaptan device shows the sum of all mercaptanes, i.e. with high natural mercaptan content the reading increases accordingly.
General safety notes: ODOR handy is designed for the measurement of odorants in natural gas/liquid gas. The nameplate of the device indicates the odorant(s) and the measuring range. Before entering areas that are subject to explosion hazard, the ODOR handy should be checked for possible damage. Only original AS parts that are approved for intrinsically safe operation of the ODOR handy may be used for maintenance purposes. The device is not suitable for use in areas containing explosive gas/air mixtures (zone 0). Liability is transferred to the owner or operator in cases where the ODOR handy is serviced or repaired improperly or by persons outside AS or who are not authorised by AS, or if the device is handled in a way that does not constitute appropriate use.

A Introduction Please read this introduction: The reliable analysis of odorants in natural gas is a very difficult analytical task. All previous methods required costly instruments, were prone to faults, or had high measurement reading tolerances. For the first time, ODOR handy offers a very simple measuring system that is able to provide precise readings. This positive effect should not be jeopardised by procedural errors during sampling. For the following reasons, the type of sampling plays the same important role for obtaining correct results as regular calibration of the device. THT (tetrahydrothiophene), the usual odorant for which the ODOR handy was developed, has an extreme tendency for adsorption. This means that THT will bond to any suitable surface up to saturation. However, THT that is held back by a surface cannot be measured, since it never reaches the detector. For this reason, your ODOR handy should always be connected to the natural gas pipe using the hose material supplied. This material (nylon) has a low tendency for adsorption. Never use a rubber hose! The concentration display should be observed continuously during the measurement. The ODOR handy shows the THT concentration arriving at the detector of the device in digital form as mg/m3. The detector of the ODOR handy will show a stable reading after one or two minutes. The measurement should continue until the reading remains unchanged over a period of one minute. Please also ensure that your measuring point is not too far away from the supply pipe to be measured. If the intended measuring point is not used for regular gas sampling, it may be necessary to discharge gas until the respective dead volume has been exchanged several times.
4
Excessively long pipe paths with stationary gas are usually result in high initial THT concentrations, with a rapid subsequent drop. This effect is caused by the opposite effect to adsorption. In stationary gas, a large quantity of THT is bonded to the pipe wall. In the event of a sudden reduction, i.e. once the gas starts flowing again, desorption of THT causes high THT readings for a short time. In this case too, the pipe should be flushed thoroughly and the reading observed until the display at the ODOR handy remains constant. The last comment refers to the integrity of the digital display of the measuring instrument. Around a value of 10 mg/m3, the integer display covers a range of +/- 10 % of the measuring result (e.g. if 9 or 11 is displayed instead of 10 mg/m³). The quality of the available calibration gases is already subject to this uncertainty. In our experience, odorisation at precisely the required minimum concentration is not possible in practice. You should always err on the safe side. If you follow these tips and information, ODOR handy will make the task of "odorant control" very
straightforward.

C Commissioning The ODOR handy is supplied ready for operation. The battery is installed, and the detector is pre-calibrated. The packaging also contains a small screwdriver, the measuring cap and the nylon connection hose. Please check the digital display, which should show a value close to zero (between - 2 and approx. + 2). Higher deviations from zero are only tolerable in the event of extreme temperatures. For the first measurement, please push the measuring cap (1) over the detector cap (2). The hose is connected to your natural gas pipe via the Swagelok screw fitting. Adapters for miniature measuring connections can be ordered from AS. The pipe pressure at the sampling point should be between 22 and 40 mbar. Higher pressures should be adjusted to a flow of approximately 0.5 l/min (30 l/h; 500 Ncm³/min) using an interposed rotameter with needle valve. The gas should now be allowed to flow through the hosepipe and the measuring cap and over the detector, while the digital display is observed. The reading should increase spontaneously and reach a stable value after one or two minutes (mercaptan device 5 - 10 min). If it continues to increase or if it falls again, the connection points should be flushed thoroughly and the measurement repeated. The measurement is completed once the display has not changed for approximately one minute. The true THT content of your gas is the actual reading minus the zero reading shown by the device before the measurement (the zero point should not be adjusted continuously, instead the measured value should simply be corrected! Changing the zero position necessitates recalibration of the device). Error: should your ODOR handy show a nonsensical value during this first test, please contact our customer service department. The device has no switch-off facility, ensuring permanent power supply of the sensor. For prolonged storage, the battery can be removed from the device. Please re-insert the battery at least 12 hours before the device is used next time. The device should be calibrated immediately prior to the measurement. Please note that the ODOR handy should be calibrated regularly.
10
D Measurement Before starting a measurement series, the battery and the calibration should be checked.
1. Read the zero value (reading prior to gassing). 2. Connect the device to the gas pipe via the nylon connection hose and the measuring cap
A.) directly B.) via a rotameter at pressures above 22 mbar. Adjust the flow to approximately 0.5 l/min
(30 l/h; 500 Ncm³/min). 3. Wait until the reading is stable. (usual times: THT 1 - 2 minutes, mercaptanes 5 - 10 minutes) 4. Read the value and subtract the zero value (if applicable) from the reading. 5. 10 minutes idle time before the next measurement.
E Calibration The calibration procedure is very similar to the actual measurement, with calibration gas being connected instead of natural gas.
Short instructions 1. Check battery 2. Check zero point and adjust if necessary (Fig. 1, adjusting screw 7) 3. Flush the pressure reducer 4. Connect calibration gas to the ODOR handy 5. Wait until the reading is stable. 6. In the event of deviations:
?? Adjust amplification (Fig. 1, adjusting screw 8) ?? Separate the device from the calibration gas and wait for 10 minutes. Then repeat the
procedure. The steps are described in more detail below: 1. Check battery See battery 2. Check the zero point and adjust if necessary The zero point of the device may shift slightly (- 2 to + 2) depending on the temperature. Prior to connecting the calibration gas, it can be set to 000 via the adjusting screw (7). During the measurement series, the zero point should not be changed, since this may invalidate the calibration.
11
3. Flush the pressure reducer
?? Connect the pressure reducer to the calibration gas bottle (1). ?? Close the needle valve (5) ?? Open the bottle valve (2) ?? Turn the knob (3) until the manometer (4) shows a pressure of approximately 1 bar. ?? Close the bottle valve (2) and release the pressure reducer by opening the needle valve (5).
Adequate flushing of the pressure reducers is important for ensuring that the correct calibration gas concentration reaches the sensor of the ODOR handy. 4. Connect calibration gas to the ODOR handy.
?? Connect the lower inlet of the rotameter with the pressure reducer via the nylon hose supplied. ?? The nylon connection hose with the measuring cap is connected to the upper outlet. ?? Open the bottle valve (2) and the needle valve (5). The flow through the rotameter should be set
to 0.5 l/min (30 l/h; 500 Ncm³/min) via the needle valve (6). ?? Attach the measuring cap to the ODOR handy.
5. Wait until the reading is stable. The reading increases as soon as gas flows across the ODOR handy. After one or two minutes (5 - 10 minutes for the mercaptane device) the reading reaches its final value. The value should be read once the reading remains unchanged over a period of one minute.
12
7. In the event of deviations
Certified calibration gas bottles are supplied with precise concentration information. If the reading of the ODOR handy deviates from the specified calibration gas concentration, the amplification of the device has to be changed. Leave the calibration gas connected and set the correct reading via adjusting screw (8). Once the correct value is set, the ODOR handy should be disconnected from the gas for at least 10 minutes. In case of larger deviations, the calibration should be repeated. Only for THT devices: After each calibration, the CE value should be recorded in the calibration protocol. The CE value indicates the amplification level. The CE value is obtained by pressing the appropriate key (9). If the value is higher than 250, the sensor should be changed. Caution: Check the calibration regularly and enter the data in the lists provided. Only experience over a longer period will show how long your ODOR handy remains stable. Before important measurement series and after long breaks between measurements, the calibration should always be checked, also after a battery change and after the installation of new detectors.
F Checking/changing the battery: From time to time, the battery of the ODOR handy should be checked. Push the front lid (3) to the first snap position and press the appropriate key (6). Short sounds and regular rapid flashing of the signal lamp (14) indicate that the battery is intact. If the sound sequence is slower, e.g. every 2 seconds, the battery should be changed. The display also indicates weakening of the battery. If dots suddenly start appearing between the digits, the battery should be changed. If the ODOR handy is used regularly, the battery needs changing approximately every six months. The empty battery can be removed after the front lid has been removed completely. Please note when inserting a new battery: The battery should be inserted with the label pointing to the front and the contact strip pointing downwards. Once the new battery has been inserted, the ODOR handy will issue the usual visual and acoustic alarm signals. Depending on the discharge state of the battery, it will take between several minutes and several hours until the system has become stable again. If the battery was completely empty, the device should be left to rest for one day. The calibration should then be checked and adjusted if necessary.
13
G Detector Over time, the detector will become less sensitive. This is compensated by adjusting (calibrating) the amplifier. A detector should be changed if:
?? the amplification can no longer be increased at the potentiometer (8); ?? (only THT detectors) the CE value after calibration is greater than 250; ?? the white filter is very soiled; ?? the joint at the side of the detector is leaky; ?? the detector responds unnaturally.
Before the detector is changed, the battery should be removed from the device. Then pull off the detector cap (2). The detector becomes visible and can simply be pulled off. The guide lug at the side facilitates insertion of the new detector. Align the lug with the guide groove (Fig.2: (9.1), (9.2)) and carefully push the detector into the detector base. As you will have seen by now, the detector rests on fine gold contacts that fit into the sockets in the detector base. Never use force when inserting the detector - carefully try and find the right position. Replace the detector cap immediately afterwards. Once the battery has been inserted, the usual warning signals can be heard. This may continue for several minutes. Leave the device to rest until the following day, then calibrate it.
H Alarms: The ODOR handy has an acoustic alarm and a visual alarm with two alarm thresholds. If the first alarm threshold is exceeded, the device starts beeping and the LED flashes. Once the second alarm threshold is reached, the frequency of the alarm signals doubles. The current level of the alarm thresholds can be displayed by pressing the appropriate key (4.2 or 5.2). The alarm thresholds can be adjusted via the adjusting screw (4.1 or 5.1). The maximum value is 100.

ODOR handy is intended for the measurement of THT in odorised natural gas. It is not intended for use with town gas containing CO and H2. Please take account of possible cross sensitivities (e.g. vis-à-vis methanol). A simple check for cross sensitivities can be carried out through measurement with non-odorised gas. If ODOR handy also produces a reading with non-odorised gas, the gas contains substances to which the detector also responds. In such cases, a gas chromatography measuring technique should be used.
