    Instruction Manual

1.4 General Description and Operating Principle

    1.4.1 General Descript ion

The purpose of the Desorber is to remove water from oil systems where the normal mechanical means ofwater removal, i.e., settling or coalescing, are unable to perform. This inability is typically caused by asystem lay-out where settling is impossible, or by the use of highly hygroscopic or emulsifying oils.

The Desorber removes the water by means of evaporation, utilizing the fact that warm air is able tocontain more water vapour than cold air: Cool, dry air is blown through warm oil, thereby being saturatedwith vapour as its temperature rises, and the water is consequently removed from the oil.

The Desorber is schematically illustrated on the previous page and comprises the following maincomponents:

    • Supply pump• Desorbing chamber with air distributor and heating element.• Discharge pump.• Heat exchanger.• Air blower.• Air cooled condenser with fan.• Cyclone.• Control panel.• Instruments and control switches.

    1.4.2 Working princip le

The supply pump draws the oil from the contaminated system and pumps it through the heat exchangerto the desorbing chamber, where the oil is heated to final process temperature by the electric heatingelement. The heat exchanger serves as an energy saver as the incoming oil is heated by the processedoutgoing oil.

In the desorbing chamber the oil flows downwards, meeting the upstreaming air from the air distributor ina counter-flow, and it exits the chamber through the discharge pump’s suction line.

The air / oil / water mixture passes a number of deflector plates and a demister on its way up through thechamber, thereby expelling the oil particles before entering the condenser via the air outlet.

In the condenser the saturated air is cooled to a temperature below its dew point, thereby expelling thevapour as water droplets, which are then separated from the air stream in the cyclone. From the cyclonethe water drains to a water outlet from where it can be collected.

The air exits the cyclone and is drawn into the blower where the heat of the compression lowers therelative humidity of the air, meaning that it is again ready to absorb water from the oil in the desorbing

chamber. The discharge pump presses the oil through the heat ex-changer to the oil outlet through which it returnsto the oil system.

    3.1 Stationary Units

    3.1.1 Mechanical requirements:

Oil in- and outlets are equipped with 22 mm cutting ring type pipe fittings for external connection.

The external piping must be supported and stress-free in order not to damage supply pump and heatexchanger, and the length of the suction line must not exceed the following values:

    ISO 150 oil / 20ºC tank temperature = Max. 6 metres.ISO 150 oil / 40ºC tank temperature = Max. 20 metres.ISO 220 oil / 20ºC tank temperature = Max. 4 metres.ISO 220 oil / 40ºC tank temperature = Max. 15 metres.

Use pipes with larger inner diameter if the Desorber cannot be installed within these limits, or contactC.C. Jensen for further information.

The water drain outlet should preferably be able to discharge freely into a drip pan or similar, but a drainhose of 1-2 metres is allowed.

    CAUTION

Do not under any circumstances connect the water drain outlet to a pipe installationwhere back-pressure might arise as this w ill j eopardize the correct function of theDesorber.

Make sure that service and maintenance areas, as indicated on the installation drawing (53 011 21-4),

    are available.

Electrical requirements: Connect the Desorber according to the electric circuit diagram in chapter 9.1 of this manual. Observelocal rules and regulations.

    5 NORMAL OPERATING AND DRAINAGE

5.1 Normal OperationDuring normal operation after the filling sequence, the supply and discharge pumps will run continuously;the latter at a variable speed controlled by the EPR (Electronical Programmable Relay) and frequencyinverter according to the fluid level in the desorbing chamber.

The temperature control thermostat is factory preset for a process oil temperature of 70ºC, and will switchon and off the electric heating element in order to maintain this temperature.

The water extracted by the Desorber will ALWAYS, to an extent, be contaminated with oil. The ratiodepends, among other things, on the initial content of water and the hygroscopic properties of the oil.

    CAUTION

It is therefore strictl y prohibit ed to dispose of the water through normal sanitationdrains or sewers !!

Observe local r ules and regulations regarding chemical waste !!

5.2 DrainageThe Desorber has an automatic draining sequence mode intended to be used when the unit has to bemoved to another location or when another oil type is to be treated. The draining sequence is fullyautomatic, and the unit can therefore be left unattended during draining.

The discharge pump will drain the unit at high speed until it’s empty. EPR regulate the speed by means ofhigh level sensor and low level sensor, and is controlled by means of a 3-valve solenoid valve. Thechamber is emptied at low speed.

    6 CONTROL AND A LARM S YSTEM

6.1 Control systemThe Desorber is EPR-controlled and works automatically in both operating modes: RUN and DRAIN. Thespeeds of the supply pump, blower and cooling fan are constant, whereas the speed of the dischargepump is varied by means of the frequency inverter integrated in the control box.

Speed setting, heat enabling and pump action is controlled by the EPR through inputs from the levelswitches on the desorbing chamber and the temperature control thermostat.

Furthermore, additional safety against overheating is secured through the manual reset type temperatureswitch, and the system is protected against excessive pressure by the built-on pressure switch.

6.2 Alarm syst emThe Desorber is equipped with an alarm and shut-down system monitoring the following malfuntions:

    • High oil level• High temperature cut-out• Motor overload cut-out

The shut-down system will stop either the supply pump or the whole desorbing process depending on thenature of the alarm. When an alarm is raised, the common alarm will lit.

After a high level alarm occurs the unit automatically starts to drain the chamber, if the alarm is reset, theunit go back to normal running.

After shut-down, desorbing cannot be resumed before the fault has been corrected and the indication

lamp is extin-guished through an additional activation of the reset button.

The Desorber is equipped with a Normally Closed alarm output for remote indication purpose.
