Mannum Show – 88 and it Was Great
Abeautiful autumn day greeted the recent 88th Mannum AnnualShow. A very small and dedicated committee banded together
and brought one of the most successful shows in the AgriculturalSociety’s history.
With the generous support of major sponsors, Mannum Waters andMannum Caravan Park and the local business community ofMannum, the show had some great financial support and thereforewas able to employ some new and exciting entertainment for all thefamily. The entertainment brought many smiles to faces with stiltjumping clowns, flame throwing tricycle riding entertainers, camels,Clydesdales and jumping dogs just to name a few. The old fashionedPunch and Judy show brought some great memories back for theolder audience members and some new experiences for the youngeraudience.
With the upgrade of the power at the Showground only just a weekbefore the show, the trade sites exhibitors for 2011 were up by athird, with many new exhibitors being able to make use of the newpower arrangements. The Agricultural Society gratefullyacknowledges the support the Mid Murray Council has given to theSociety with regards to this upgrade.
Miss Showgirl was moved back to the main stage (stage generouslysupplied by Males Transport) this year which proved to be a big hitwith entries being substantially up on previous years.
With the Pioneer Pavilion having just been revamped for the Artand Photography Sections (labour generously done by Roger Baker)and both Bretag and Pioneer Pavilions now being paved, the ‘grand’old buildings looked fantastic. Much of the colourful artwork wasdone by Palmer Primary School and Mannum Community Collegestudents and with the addition of artwork from many other verytalented local artists, the pavilion was packed with interested peoplefor most of the day. The photography section was once again up withentries with a lot of beautiful photography from around the local area.
Former resident Sheridan Holland took a clean sweep of everyevent in the Sheaf Tossing. The Golden Oldies Sheep Shearing eventproved a hit with local resident Rodney Bond taking out the event. The Horses-In-Action entries were once again up and competitionproved to be quite fierce. All other competition sections were wellrepresented. Schache Dining Hall did a roaring trade with new, young, catering convenor Jade Clarke taking over the reins for thefirst time this year.

Camp QualityA Day Out in Mannum for Kids with Cancer
On Sunday March 20th the Mannum Lions hosted a day out forkids with cancer, as part of the ‘Camp Quality’ program.
For the 58 visitors it started with a 1 hour morning river cruise, courtesy of ‘River of Australia Expeditions’. For the kids, thehighlight was being allowed to steer the boat for a few minutes, a rolethat earned them a ‘Captain for the Day’ certificate from CaptainDave Farran.
Back at Mannum’s Mary Ann Reserve everyone was treated to aBBQ lunch by the Lions.S a u s a g e s , h a m b u r g e r s ,vegetarian patties and salads alldisappeared quickly. To top itoff the kids were delighted to beallowed to order “any ice creamthey like” from the river-frontkiosk. A face painter donatedher services, adding greatly tothe fun of the day. The MannumCFS then turned up to give the
kids the thrill of sitting behind the wheel of the big CFS fire trucks, blowing the siren and squirting the fire hoses. One of the youngfireman caused much hilarity by playing a game of ‘squirt me if youcan’ with the children. Another highlight of the day was a ride aroundthe town in a stretch limo hot-rod, a service generously provided by‘Cool Car Hire’ of Mannum. The kids loved it.
Tegan Davis, from Camp Quality, said it was one of the best daysthey’d had in ages. A number of the adults commented that a day likethis was not only important for the kids with cancer but also for theirparents and siblings.
This event has been a regular feature of the Lions program formany years, a legacy of the late Lester Howie who initiated the eventand ran it for over a decade. Lion Fred Lowe, who has taken on therole of organising the day was delighted that the rain held off untilafter it was all over. He was most appreciative, too, of the cruise boat‘Expeditions’, the Mannum CFS, Shaun Bartlett with his stretch limoand the face painter who had all donated their services withoutcharge.

The Dogs Din ... Arrh!
Dear Editor,Is Mannum going to the dogs?
It seems that there are more andmore barking dogs in Mannumevery day, or is it just myimagination?
Near my home is a house withfive yappy fur balls, not far awayis another residence with fivedogs housed only a few metresfrom the neighbour’s (an elderlylady) front door. What a racket!
Another place on the southernside of town has seven barking, howling, growling mongrels.
I thought this town had amaximum two dogs perhousehold law?
Just a stone’s throw from meare two dogs that howl fromaround 7:30 every morning, sixdays a week and continue to doso until “daddy” gets home fromwork. Poor dogs; poor sufferingneighbours!
It seems that whenever theFrau or I wake up during thenight there is a mutt barkingsomewhere in the vicinity. Toofar away to locate but closeenough to interrupt a soundsleep.
Just might have to ring theCouncil again on 8569 0100 orthe Dog Control Officer on 0429999 641. Reckon I’ve got theright to some peace and quietand I reckon the dog owner’s gotsome responsibilities to controltheir pooch.
Well, I’ve said my bit so I’mgoing back to bed … I’m dogtired!

Local Support, A Two Way Street
Dear EditorI have been in the Mannum
area for about 5 years as a shackowner and keen to embrace the“local shops” as my own. So farmy shopping experience has notbeen a positive one.
I have found too muchnepotism in how the customersare greeted and served in thebusinesses in Mannum!
How long do you think I haveto reside here before beingtreated the same as the locals?
Maybe Mannum should lookto towns like Handorf or Olindain Victoria who respect thenewcomer and tourist and putout the “Welcome Mat” to all!

May the Power Be with You
Dear EditorAttending the recent Mannum
Show I noticed that additionalpower boxes have been installedat the showground.
I once saw caravans up thereusing the facilities whileoccupants enjoyed a golfingweekend – and all withinwalking distance.
But, that was some time ago.Wouldn’t it be great if this was
the first stage of establishing an‘overflow’ for the MannumCaravan Park to be used in peaktimes or high rivers, or maybe asanother alternative camping areawith the added attraction of theskate park.
If so, well done Council. It’sabout time.

Ninjas Win Summer Netball
After a season of keencompetition, the Grand
Final of the Mixed SummerNetball was played at theMannum Leisure Centre onMonday 7th March.
The two teams that facedup that evening were theNinjas and the Expandables. Both had won an equalnumber of matches duringthe season, so a close matchwas expected. In thequalifying final, when theseteams last met, it was ahectic, high standard match, which the Ninjas won by acouple of goals.
Nerves seemed to affectplay in the grand final, asboth teams made mistakesand the play did not flow assmoothly as it might. Ninjasestablished a handy lead of 3goals by the end of the firstquarter, and built on that leaduntil they were 11 goalsahead at three quarter time.Although the Expandableswon the final quarter, theycouldn’t get closer than 10goals at the final buzzer, soin the end it was quite acomfortable win to theNinjas.
Congratulations on a goodseason!

Thomas Paine Bellchambers“There is the evil that comes from the destruction of valuable links in nature’s chain, on which man’s very existence largely hangs.Nature always provides a surplus for legitimate use, far in excess of needs, to ensure continuance of species, ... unrestrained manuses up the capital instead of the surplus and this must, by natural law, end in disaster.”
The above ins ight fulobservations were penned
by Thomas Paine Bellchambers(1859-1920).
Thomas was a notablenaturalist, an avid writer ofarticles on conservation, floraand fauna, and an author of twonature books.
Much of his life was spent inand around Mannum, and hisrenown was enhanced by beingthe first person to breed Malleefowl in captivity, and the first torun an apiary in the district.
On the 17th February this yearhe was honoured by thededication, in his name, of a
small parcel of scrub. The landis presently being revegetated bya small group of people whowish to preserve it, as it is hometo a nationally vulnerablespecies of flora.
Members of the Bellchambersfamily were obviously heartenedto be present on the occasion of
their esteemed forebear beinghonoured by way of the namingof the reserve, and the plantingof a native tree by one of hisgrandsons.
Plaudits to Gavin Smith for hisdedication and ongoingenvironmental efforts.

Meet the Mid Murray MayorDave Burgess
Eldest of seven children, born andraised in Adelaide, our newest mayor
attended St Paul’s primary school andpublic high school, but he was in lovewith neither. As soon as he could, heapprenticed to a cabinet maker andworked at his trade “for a little while”before heading for New Zealand for threemonths as a backpacker. When hereturned he worked at different thingsuntil he was able to buy a taxi truck andwork for himself. He found moremotivation as an owner operator where“the extra effort put the extra benefit intomy pocket.” Meanwhile a lady called Lynhad also returned from adventuringoverseas and was managing the Sanyoservice department. They renewed a teenage acquaintance.
Lyn’s parents had a shack on the riverand, being his own boss, Dave was able toarrange every second week end off andspend it on the river with Lyn. Dave soonfound he had both Lyn and the river in hislife. The couple decided to restart a shopnear Sabaruma that had been Lyn’sgrandfather’s “to get a bit of retailexperience and see how it went.” After sixmonths they were invited to purchase theWalker Flat General Store that had beenclosed for four years. There was no petrolor liquor license, it was ‘start fromscratch’ and they jumped at theopportunity.
It was a handshake deal. The widowedowner was still living in the house whichwas included in the purchase and she letthem into the shop before the deal wasclosed.
They sold in Adelaide, finalized the dealand spent the next 20 years there. Theystarted business and obtained a petrollicense. When someone asked Dave whathe was going to do with the old back storeroom, he announced that it would becomethe Walker Flat Liquor Store. It got alaugh but, after the complications of
obtaining a liquor license, the liquor storebecame a reality. It was a challengingprocess, literally, so when a neighbouringstore also applied for a license, there wasno objection from the Burgess enterprise. They realized the more services the betterfor the area and tourism and theneighbouring applicant applauded theirattitude with thanks.
Over the years the floor space wasexpanded fourfold, and rental office spaceadded. A stone ruin behind the premiseswas upgraded to a high standard andturned into a quality B and B and namedLake Bywater Cottage. The Burgessenterprise hosted the local progressassociation meetings and was active in itsactivities, replanting, creating lookout andreserve areas and generally improving thearea. Dave’s interest in local politics grew. The family also grew and it becameobvious “the boys had other ambitions.” Itwas time to wind down after a busy 20years. The Walker Flat General andLiquor Store was a 7 days a week businessand “you end up married to it.” Theydecided to move on but they kept the Band B.
Moving on was not about retirement butabout lifestyle. Now settled in Wongulla,Lyn loves her work in the hospital kitchenand assumes responsibility for the B andB. Dave also has two jobs - as well asbeing mayor of Mid Murray Council heworks in the local program to prevent thespread of broomrape, being on call towash down machinery in areas wherebroomrape has been identified, before theequipment is moved. The work suits him.A trailer and gear are provided and he getsto meet lots of farmers and look aroundthe district.
Our newest mayor enjoys meetingpeople and helping find solutions. He likecommunities where people work for theirown goals, volunteering to plant trees, do
up reserves and generally improve theplace and he enjoys working with thosegroups. He says, “This is a great place tolive. That’s why I stuck around after wesold the shop.”
Being mayor does have its challenges, especially this year when the area hasreceived half the year’s rainfall in the firstquarter of the year. Resources have to bediverted to repairs that were planned to beused for upgrading.
As for his second love, the river, hebelieves the basin plan is a necessity. “Theriver is an important part of our lives andit will require an adjustment for all. It’sbetter to make the adjustment now thanhave a slow cancer destroying the river. We can’t wait for another drought andthen just react. Everyone has a stake; theirrigators, the towns, the recreationalusers. It’s important for eco tourism andthe environment. I want it as a resource forour grandchildren and our grandchildren’sgrandchildren and I don’t want to be thelast mayor of the town with a healthyriver.”

Remembering the Music VI
Calypso music camesuddenlyupon the popular
music scene in the later 1950's.By far the most popularperformer of the music wasHarry Belafonte who made itinto the charts with “BananaBoat Song” and “JamaicaFarewell”. The fact that he wasextremely attractive and wasalmost always picturedrevealing a manly chest hadnothing to do with it.
Belafonte appeared in filmssuch as “Carmen Jones” whichwas a version of Bizet’s“Carmen” in modern dresswith an African American cast, and “Island in the Sun”
He also became an activist inracist issues and spoke onthese matters at a number offorums. He is still similarlyinvolved.
For all that, he was and is anentertainer and two recordingsof live performances by him atCarnegie Hall are well worthadding to your disc collectionif you have one. “BelafonteReturn to Carnegie Hall” isone of the best liveperformances on record that Ihave heard in any musicalgenre. My double vinyl hasgrown old and tired withplaying, given to me by myparents in 1961. Recently Ihave obtained a new CD forless than $3 with postage afurther $7. Incredible!
The performance divides intoa number of show cases.Firstly Belafonte warms theaudience up either solo oraccompanied by the Belafontesingers. There is the amusing“A Little Lyric of GreatImportance”, “I wish the rentwas heaven sent”, and“Chickens!”.
The Chad Mitchell Trio, afolk group follows with threeitems, particularly “The Balladof Sigmund Freud” is soappropriate in this age ofcounselling as the universalpanacea for almost anything.
The wonderful Odettafollows, finishing with a duetwith Belafonte - “There’s a
Hole in the Bucket” - whichmade the charts in Australiaand is a wonderful round-song.Odetta had the most powerfulvoice, I saw her at CentennialHall in 1966 where she stoodmetres back from themicrophone and filled the Hallwith her voice. Incredible!
The album continues withMiriam Makeba, known asMama Africa. She had onlyrecently arrived in the US andhad made an impact withappearances at various NewYork night spots. She marriedStokely Carmichael, a BlackPanther, which causedcontroversy and cancellationof her recording contracts. HerSouth African passport wascancelled however Guinea,Belgium and Ghana issued herpassports. She was latermarried to jazz trumpeterHugh Masekela who had achart entry with “Grazin’ inthe grass”. Performance onGraceland with Paul Simonrenewed her career. Hersegment concludes also with aduet with Belafonte. Togetherthey perform the rather cynical“One More Dance”.
The Belafonte Singers thenfeature. They are twelves i n g e r s a n d t h r e einstrumentalists, nearlyall withdegrees in music. Marvellousharmonising especially on“Didn’t it Rain” and “The OxDrivers”.
Finally Belafonte returnswith several items, the last ofwhich is a rousing version of“La Bamba” that closes theprogram. Pop singer RitchieValens had a hit with that itemin 1958 turning it into a rockrhythm tune.
The earlier album “Belafonteat Carnegie Hall” is almost asgood. It does not feature therange of guests that are in theReturn, being more exclusivelyBelafonte.
The Internet seems to be thebest place to find and buythese audio gems.

A New TV Show
This last month has been quiteh e c t i c . M a m m o t h T V
Productions Inc has asked me to writea new TV series titled “The Timidand the Ugly”. It is a real challenge. We want it to be new and innovativewithout being tacky.
At our initial conferences it wasdecided that we would help theviewer to decide on the watchability- new word we created as part of theoverall drive to be different - of thedaily episode. To assist in thisendeavour we will create fourwatcher bars. On the right hand sideof the screen we are going to have a“Tears” scale which will changecontinuously throughout the episode. It will show how many of the onscreen actors are crying at any onetime. Along the bottom the will be a“Blonde” scale. Here the scale willindicate at any time the proportion ofblondes to brunettes ranging fromzero brunettes to one hundredpercent brunettes or conversely onehundred percent blondes to zeroblondes. On the right hand side willbe the over-acting scale. This will bea value judgement scale, however togive it some quantitative values it willassess each actor in terms of posture, voice pitch and volume, use of handsand gesticulation and use of facial
expressions including eye movement. The scale at the top of the screen willrelate the ages of the male actors tothose of the female actors. It is felt bythe production team that this willmake the series so much stronger inviewer involvement than any of itstime slot rivals.
A further feature of the productionwill be that the timid will neveractually appear on screen. Only theirvoices will be heard off-screen. As forthe ugly it is felt that there is a largesupply of ugly people who arepoliticians, managers and otherpeople in high profile employmentwho are more than willing to appearas guest stars in each episode. Thesepeople are so desperate to be starsthat they will perform for little or nofees thus significantly reducing theproduction costs. Of course most ofthem won’t be able to act howeverwith digital technology we will beable to mask that deficiency. Suchintensive technical effort will be aminus as it will add to the cost. Thusit will advantageous to find thosewho have a modicum of ability.
The storyline became less importantas we worked out the other details. We decided that there would be fivedifferent themes for the five days ofthe week. We would use the samedaily story line for each particular
day but change the stars each day. Those who showed any acting abilitywould be invited back for additionalepisodes not necessarily as the samecharacter. Continuance of characterreally seemed to be immaterial; themain attraction of the show would bewho was the star for a particular day, would they be murdered, die ofpoisoning or killed in an accident;would they be divorced, married orwidowed; would their children rejectthem, discover them, or leave home?Whenever the acting was too extremewe would show a lot more of thebackground scenery and movetowards a travelogue scenario forthat episode.
In outline the five fundamentaldaily episodes will be broadly asfollows. Monday the female lead willconfess to having had an illegitimatechild while the male lead admits tohaving had multiple affairs with thefemale lead’s best friends. The motherof the second female lead will bedying of cancer and the father of themale lead will have died in a shootingaccident. All these situations can bechanged around from week to week sothat the viewers do not recognisethem or grow tired of the series. OnTuesday the basic story will be that ofrevolt by the second female lead
against the tyrannical father with thefemale lead as the helpless motherwatching her baby being totallydestroyed by the dastardly father butfinding true love with the secondmale lead before he shoots the fatherand is taken to the gas chamber. There can be particularly heartrending scenes immediately prior tothe execution with additional staropportunities as the prison warderand the executioner. Wednesdaywould see quite a different story line. The female lead would be enjoying aholiday at some exotic resort whereshe meets the male lead. He is therewith his invalid wife (second femalelead) who is very demanding. The twoleads fall in love and conspire to getrid of the second female lead. Thesecond female lead happens to fallfrom the balcony of her penthouseapartment. However the second malelead enters in the form of a policelieutenant who feels that there issomething suspiciousabout the death. His investigations show that theinvalid wife was pushed from thebalcony by the female lead while themale lead tripped her up as shewalked towards where they werestanding near the front of thebalcony.

Out Of This WorldAstronomer’s Corner
Observing the other planets of our solar systemwith the use of a telescope and noting any changes has made
astronomy a well-defined hobby; a place to enjoy a unique observingskill at all levels.
Much of the interest built up because of the fine engineering skillsthat formed in and grew from the industrial revolution; the use of alathe and precision metal work in industry. The other side was thedevelopment of observation skills and the use of instruments forlocating distant objects, that are barely there at all, with the precisionof a watchmaker, only at a grand scale in the case of our majorobservatories.
Those observatories gave thinking space for the development ofeven larger observatories to come but it seems we cannot have thenew without the old as a platform, radio astronomy for example is asimportant today as it ever was.
The use of modern technology to make sensitive instruments suchas the large hadron collider has encouraged the endeavour to connectall of the knowledge for a much more definitive answer.
We still need people to translate and interpret the data gathered, inmuch the same way as the photographs of Saturn led to a greaterdepth of understanding of what is happening in this far distant place. All of the scientists examining the photographs sent back byVoyager One and Two made many discoveries that were impossibleto detect using earth based telescopes.
The new planets being discovered outside our solar system havebeen found using observation techniques and analysis rather than thepower of the lenses, although that is important. The small finderscope of the main telescope is just as important to orientate the maintube once the two scopes have been aligned. But the observer doingthe alignment and analysis is also important.
My point is that many scopes may be aligned on a platform andfocussed on a point in the sky using a camera and a combination oftelescopes but must all be guided by an inquiring mind.

Ridley LionsCharity Auction - A Great Success
Saturday March the 12th, theday of the Ridley Lions
Charity Auction Sale at theSwan Reach Lions Den andMuseum Grounds, dawned fineand sunny. To ensure successmembers commenced at about 7am with selling at 10am.
The very enter tainingauctioneers were Jim and Peterof Havelberg Brown Real Estateof Mannum, who freely gave oftheir time. I’m sure somepatrons bought items they didn’treally want in the “frequentmoments of hectic comedy” but,
realising that all proceeds areforwarded to selected charities, were happy to do so. Yours trulywas sold a pair of dilapidated frypans at $2 when swatting aninsect!
When taking a break fromsnapping up bargains manyenjoyed a hot sausage or tea, coffee and a slice of Lions fruitcake. Swan Reach Museum folksold welcome icy cold softdrinks.
We wish to thank the Sedan,Cambrai, Nildottie and SwanReach Post/Stores, Leader,
River News, Mannum Mag,Murray Valley Standard,Riverland Weekly, Cambrai,Swan Reach Schools, Radio5MU and 5RM for their muchappreciated publicity.
Thank you to those whodonated items for sale, making ita great success. An unusualoffering that created a good dealof interest was a collection ofstamps and coins. Thanks to thea u c t io ne e r s a n d t h o s eparticipating, over $1000 wasraised on the day.
We have been asked to cater
for an auction sale to be held atthe property of N and V Schultz,Black Hill Road, Cambrai onSaturday April 2nd where we willbe offering hot sausages andpatties together with hot soupand soft drinks for patrons. Inaccordance with the Lionscharter, all proceeds will bedistributed to worthy causes byour members, who are allvolunteers.

A New TV ShowFrom page 7
In the end both leads are led awayto prison and it turns out that theinvalid wife did not actually die as shewas saved by an awning covering anoutdoor alfresco dining area. The fallcured the invalid who married thepolice officer and they all livedhappily ever afterwards on the firstleads financial investments. Thursdaywould be family day where sons anddaughters mingle happily with halfsisters and half brothers, step sistersand step brothers, lost mothers andfathers. It will have a very high tearindex. There can be many variations
including long lost cousins, aunts anduncles and pseudo relations who arereally out to do something bad to oneor more of the heroes of thatparticular episode. Friday will be thelucky day where one of the principalcharacters inherits a fortune or winsa large sweepstake or gains a largepromotion. If we want to we canintroduce conflict by having one leadwinning and one lead losing. Thiscould also be the episode where wehave a large amount of wardrobechanges and thus gain significantsponsorship from the various hautecouture clothes manufacturers.
It is worthy of note that there are alarge number of advertisers alreadybesieging the advertising agency.
They range from detective agencyadvertising missing person services todrug rehabilitation centres, retirement villages and euthanasiaorganisations.
So successful do we feel this serieswill become that we are alreadylooking beyond it to a series set in adeveloping country where the localpopulation want to learn about ourlife style and thus they begin toacquire the same characteristics. What this means is that all the storiesfrom “The Timid and the Ugly” canbe used again. We believe there is alarge market involving the recentlyretired baby boomers and even thelost generation before them. So wesee the “Grey Nomad” generation
being featured together with theirchildren who are supposed to care forand love them. We are becoming soexcited about the series concept andits marketability that we may actuallyput both into production at the sametime. Again there will be a largenumber of willing unskilled starsavailable at little cost. These peoplewill want to star just to show theirfriends that they are on TV. Theworking title for the series will be“The Old and the Dutiful”. Happydays!

Too Soon
Those shocking, heart-wrenching scenesof Japanese people struck down by
earthquake and tsunami, followed by fears ofinvisible yet potent radiation leaks, arereminders that life is fragile, temporary andcannot be taken for granted. Nevertheless, when a person we love dies unexpectedly, itis always harder to comprehend and toaccept.
In 2009 Jacqui and I visited my friendDavid from Roseworthy College days andhis wife Annie at Emu Bay. David hadworked in Adelaide until his early retirementas an entomologist. He and Annie then soldtheir home and shifted from the mainland to“live the dream”, running a small beef herdon their picturesque island property. They
were still housed in their caravan, nestledamong mallees - happy as larks, kids atheart, when we visited the farm for two days.Plans were drawn up for their new home.Meanwhile, other tasks took priority, such asbuilding an implement shed and caring fortheir stock. When David missed the bottomrung of his ladder stepping down after fixinga gutter to the shed in July 2010, who’d havethought that such a simple fall would killhim?
Many “old” Roseworthy mates attendedDavid’s funeral service at Penneshaw. Anniewas strongly supported by family andfriends. Jacqui and I are so pleased we madethat journey in 2009 and witnessed thepleasure of future-planning by David andAnnie. Later Jacqui wrote a beautiful poemfor Annie, “This Empty Space”. It got belowthe surface of how our dear friend must havebeen feeling, then and now.
On 19th March this year we attended apresentation at Port Lincoln where Jacquireceived a trophy for her poem, which hadwon the 2011 Eyre Writers award for openpoetry. At first, Jacqui was uncomfortableabout “taking back” her gift to Annie and“giving it” again to others. Then she realizedthat the death of a loved one (whetheranticipated or unexpected) is somethingwhich each of us will experience during ourown short lifetime. Her words are like
threads woven into the greater fabric ofmortality which each of us must wear andbear. Perhaps you too will find comfort inreading “This Empty Space”.

This Empty Space
Afterwards, after the weeping, the remembering, love and laughter trickled into the void. This empty space was floodedby family and friendsand a sunshower sparkled on the wattles.
Afterwards they all went back to distant places, silence and emptiness slipped through cracksand hid amongst his clothesand lurked between his books and tools, while rosellas sipped nectar from the bluegums.
Afterwards, he was still there, tinkering, toying with your feelings, reminding youof the things he had achieved, the trees he planted last May,the letters he wrote when you were only nineteen.
Afterwards the ocean was royal blue, bottle green, hiding shipwreck tragedies, drowned dreamers.Fishing boats and ferries plied the wavesand tiny penguins nested in the bay.He walked beside you everywhere, afterwards.

On My Bookshelf
Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue– some old autograph books
Iam a collector of oldautograph books and have
been fascinated by them for aslong as I can remember. As achild when my family visitedGrandma Brown and my twomaiden aunts in their oldweatherboard house inBendigo I would always go tothe glass-fronted bookcaseand pore over Aunty Clarice’sAlbum. Many years laterGrandma’s old bookcase isnow mine and also the lovelydeep red padded leatherAlbum.
Most of the contributionsare dated 1911-1913 whenAunty Clarice was a studentat Bendigo High School andthere are some later when shewas at Kerang College whichwas perhaps a TeachersCollege as she was a teacherfor many years. There arepoems and worthysentiments, also some lovely paintingsand drawings. People went toa lot of trouble in those days.
The page I treasure the mostis a beautifully written verse:-
“Spend not the moments in vain regretFor the days that lie behind; The future days hold treasures rare,And they who seek shall find.”
(Signed) Father 17.2.10
This was written by mygrandfather but I never knewhim. In 1938 he was killedwhile riding his bike to workat the Bendigo Advertiserwhere he was a newspapereditor.
Aunty Clarice’s album wasthe first in my collection andthe one I most value.
A n o t h e rvery interesting one was a giftt o a D o r i s L a k e ,“Roto-Myola”, Edward Street,Norwood, from her Mother, in1913. This contains someaccomplished drawings by A.Deacon including “A RundleStreet Yank” and “The Owner- The Belle of Norwood”.There is also a drawing by thesame artist of “Aurora” -Mawson Expedition Ship atPort Adelaide on her returnfrom the Antarctic.
So in my collection, as wellas lovely quotations areillustrations, some pretty, some funny, some ever soslightly risqué; there is a littlebit of history as well.
There are many remindersof the First World War withillustrations, contributions andsignatures from youngsoldiers, some on the way tothe front.
In next month’s article I willwrite about these. Particularlyinteresting and poignant is thewar history of a young NewZealander, Private RaymondDanvers Baker, written in hisown words.
Happy Reading.Jo Kader

Well, did you encourageyourself and someone
else during this last month? Ifyou forgot or just got too busy,it’s never too late to start. Tryit today!
An old proverb states, “Amerry heart is as medicine”; soset realistic goals, or even onegoal and then work towards itand be pleased when youreach it. Then set another and
go on. If you don’t reach it,remember another old saying,“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again”. Pickyourself up if necessary, dustoff and try again. Maybe evenfrom a different angle. Webreathe, mostly withoutthinking about it, so if wework at building positivehabits in our lives, it will comemore easily.
Smile at yourself in themirror and speak out loud toyourself. Look for things forwhich to be thankful. Manyare things which millions ofothers don’t have. If it getstough, slow down and justconcentrate on your breathingand nothing else, even just fora few minutes.

Mannum Bowling ClubNight Owls - Social Night Bowls
The second round of socialn i g h t b o w l s w a s
conducted during Februaryand March over a six weekperiod. Bowlers were spoiltby some excellent weatherand pleasant warm nights. The competition amongst thetwenty teams was very goodwith many excellent bowlsbeing played during theevenings.
During this round of bowlsthe winners of the first gamewere drawn against oneanother while the losers wentinto a separate draw. Thiswas done to give more teamsa chance of producing a winon the evening and proved tobe a very successful changeto the program. All teams inthe competition were able to
produce a winning game forthe series.
Bowlers have found thesynthetic surface to be greatfor night bowls. The surfaceruns very well and does notslow down as the night coolsoff, it does tend to get a littlefaster. The atmosphereduring the evening has beenvery relaxing with a musicbackground being thrown into help in this area.
Players looked forward tothe BBQ sausages and hotdogs after the first game. The‘chook and chocolate’ wheelwas always popular and keptthe bat sellers busy duringthe break.

If you can always roll the jack, right at your skipper’s feet,If you can always draw the shot, the one that must be beat. When asked to play a ‘yard on’ do you judge it to perfection? And when you’re called to drive, can you always make correction? If you can come up smiling when the other bloke,Puts your good shot out of play and treats it as a joke.If you’re the one who saves the day, I’ll say to you my son,“You’re a bloody hero, what’s more the only one!”
I rang up my local bowling club, I said “Is that the local bowling club?”He said “It depends where you’re calling from.”

The MMCSS/CHIPS ArtClass teacher, Evelien
Machin, is ‘as proud aspunch’ of her students, justask her! This year, eight classmembers submitted a total oftwenty-six entries in theMannum Show Art Exhibit, coming away with fourteenprizes! They consisted of one1st prize, seven 2nd prizes, one3rd prize and five SpecialPrizes. Given the high quality
of some of our local artists, this was a great achievementfor our little group.
The Art Class had itsbeginnings in 2008 and heldtwo of its own exhibitions in2010 which were wellsupported by locals andvisitors, with several piecesbeing sold. The quality ofartworks from this group hasimproved immensely underEvelien’s guidance. Many
different mediums are used, each member having theirown preferences and newproducts are often discussedand tried.
Communal painting is agreat way to keep yourselfinspired while enjoying thecamaraderie and the laughterthat emanates from a group oflike-minded people sharing acommon interest.
Have you noticed the ArtExhibit section of theMannum Agricultural Showseems to have expanded alittle each year over the lastthree or so years?
It is great to see so manyartworks from local artists, and even better to see thenumbers of people who takethe time to look, study andenjoy the pieces on display.
Well done Mannum!
Here is a reminder toanyone interested in creatingtheir own artworks. TheMMCSS/CHIPS Art Class isheld Mondays from midday to3pm, under the patio at therear of the MMCSS/CHIPSoffice 39 Randell Street. Youwill be made very welcome.
The cost is $10 for each 3hour class. The communalpainting experience and thelaughter are priceless! So ifyou have been thinking youmight like do some of yourown art but keep putting it offtill ‘someday’, I’ll leave youwith the wise words of PabloPicasso who said,
“Only put off untiltomorrow what you arewilling to die having leftundone.” Food for thought…

Jock, the painter, would often thin his paint so that it would go further. So when the Church decided to do some deferred maintenance, Jock was able to put in the low bid,and got the job. As always, he thinned his paint way down with turpentine. One day while he was up on the scaffolding -- the job almost finished -- he heard a horrendous clap of thunder, and the sky opened. The downpour washed the thinned paint off the church and knocked Jock off his scaffold onto the lawn among the gravestones and puddles of thinned and worthless paint.Jock knew this was a warning from the Almighty, so he got on his knees and cried: “Oh, God! Forgive me! What should I do?”And from the thunder, came a mighty voice: “REPAINT! REPAINT! AND THIN NO MORE!”

After the service the preacher was standing at the door, as always, shaking handswith his parishioners. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside. The Pastor said, “You need to join the Army of the Lord!”My friend said, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor.”“How come I don’t see you except at Christmas and Easter?”My friend whispered back, “I’m in the secret service!”

Ageing in the Murraylandswith Millie
“I’ll keep on living here andlooking after myself as long as Ican.
Then I’ll think about moving orgetting some help.”
That’s what most of uswant. Behind it is often
the hope that we’ll die withour boots on. We fear thatwe might have to leave ourbeloved home. We dreadthe upheaval, we dreadclearing out years ofaccumulated treasures. We’d have to findsomewhere else, move, getused to a new area… andwe don’t want to thinkabout getting frailer. Ifthat’s our attitude here inthe mid-Murraylands, we’ddo well to think again, lookat some facts, and thendecide and act while we’restill mentally and physicallyable to do so.
The 2006 census showedthat 873 people over age 65in the mid-Murray livedoutside Mannum, and it willbe interesting to see whathappens with that figure inthis year’s census.
T h e P r o d u c t i v i t yCommission’s currentenquiry into care for olderAustralians prompted theMurray Mallee AgeingTaskforce (MMAT) in July2010 to identify some keyissues affecting older peopleliving in the 23,000 sq. km.of the Murray Mallee.These include:
• Our local services arealready hard-pressed.
• Transport is a bigchallenge, even locallyaround Mannum.
• The Government formulafor funding expects highdemand for residential
care (Aminya, Resthaven, etc.), while people areactually wanting in-homehelp and sometimes needto go on waiting lists.
Funding does not take intoaccount the extra time andcost of careworkers, nurses, etc. getting to remote homesin rural areas. To save ontime and travel costs, services need to find staffwho live close to theseclients. This is gettingharder as those who havedone this work in the past, usually women, are ageingthemselves and not beingreplaced by younger people.Added to that, fewer familymembers are available tohelp.
The end result is that somepeople miss out or have tomanage with less assistancethan they might get if they
lived closer to a town.In summary then, help
with shopping, housework, showering and dressing, nursing services, transportto appointments locally orin Adelaide, is just gettingharder and harder to obtain. The further one lives fromMannum or Murray Bridge, the harder it is and the lesschoices are available.
Perhaps now is the time toseriously consider livingclose to Mannum or MurrayBridge so that you have thebest chance of getting helpto stay independent, in yourown home, for as long asyou possibly can.

Marinades versus rubs; agreat debate on the
building blocks of flavour. Both have great qualities.
I’ve probably looked uponthe dry rub as the ‘poorco u s i n ’ , l a t e l y I ’ veresearched the differencesand attributes of both and Imust say the scales havebalanced out for the rubs.Great flavours can beimparted to food using either;it really depends on whatresult you are trying toachieve and with what foodyou are using.
A marinade is a mix of fatand acid, e.g. oil and vinegar,it will flavour and slightlytenderise food if immersed ina marinade from 30 minutesto 2 hours, or even overnightwhen using denser foods.Softer foods will turn mushyif marinaded for too long.Marinades work well withlean and bland foods. Thec o n t a i n e r u s e d f o rmarinading is important.Don’t use aluminium as theacid will react with it and the
flavour result will not bepleasant. A marinade can bestored for up to 2 days in thefridge, just keep in mind thatthe flavour of the marinadewill be a lot brighter andfresher if used immediately. If you intend to put usedmarinade on cooked foods itMUST be boiled for 3minutes, otherwise it couldbe contaminated withmicrobes from the raw meat.
A rub, is a powder or apaste and can consist ofherbs, spices and variousother dry or wet ingredients.A rub will form a crust on thefood when cooked anddelivers flavour with everybite, while keeping theintegrity of flavour of thefood used. A rub is sprinkledor patted onto food 15 to 20minutes before cooking andas with marinades this can bedone overnight. The thing towatch here is how much saltcontent is in the rub as thiswill draw out moisture fromthe food and can leave it dryin texture. In this instance it
is best to salt the food justbefore cooking. Rubs workwell with fattier meats andcan be stored in a cool darkplace in a sealed containersuccessfully for up to 2months, any longer flavourintensity will be lost.
So you can try them bothout and see what ‘floats yourboat’ I have included a recipefor both.
Honey and Soy Marinade¼ cup canola oil2 tbsp lemon juice1 clove crushed garlic2 tbsp grated ginger2 tbsp soy sauce2 tbsp honey2 tbsp sweet chilli saucedash of sesame oil
Mix ingredients well. Pourover selected food, turning tocover food entirely withmarinade.
Cover with a tight fitting lidor plastic wrap and place inthe fridge for the necessaryamount of time for thedesired results.
Drain and/or wipe offexcess marinade beforecooking.
The General Rub (not the Colonel’s)
¼ cup cornflour2 tbsp onion powder1 tbsp garlic powder1 tsp cumin powder1 tbsp mustard powder1 tbsp paprika1 tsp salt1 tsp white pepper
Mix ingredients well, reserve a ¼ of the rub.
Sprinkle and pat onto foodto coat well.
Cover with a tight fitting lidor plastic wrap and place inthe fridge for the necessaryamount of time for thedesired results.
5 minutes before cookingsprinkle and pat the reservedrub mix onto food. Drizzlewith a little oil if you feel itis necessary, and cook.

From Your Local memberIvan Venning, member for Schubert
Mid Murray Council hadbeen working hard to get
the damaged infrastructure inMannum repaired following thetorrential rains and subsequentflooding in December, only tohave much of the good workwashed away in the downpouron the 8th March.
Mr Ivan Venning said he issaddened that much of the workdone by Council to repair thedamage will now have to bere-done, but was happy littledamage was incurred to personalproperty.
“I inspected the damagecaused by the extreme weatherand flooding in December and Iwas in Mannum again recentlyfor the show and was impressedat how much work had beendone thus far to repair damagedinfrastructure and clean up themess.
“I wrote to the Minister forTransport, in December lastyear, requesting fundingassistance for the Mid MurrayCouncil to repair the damage toroads and other infrastructure. Ihave since been notified that my
correspondence has beenforwarded to the Minister forState/Local Government forfurther consideration.
“This was on the 18th Januaryand I am still yet to receive aresponse. I would hope toreceive one soon, particular inlight of the damage the recentrains have caused to progressalready made on the clean up onrepair work.”
Mr Venning has been advisedthat Mid Murray Council ispreparing a submission forfunding for flood affected townsfrom the LGA Disaster Fund.
The damage bill of up to $1million will have a large impacton the Mid Murray Councilbudget.
“Funding not only through theLGA, but also from the StateGovernment would helpalleviate some of the budgets t r e s s the Co unc i l i sexperiencing” said Mr Venning.
Mannum Show
Mr Venning said it was one ofthe best Mannum Shows he hadever attended.
“The weather was beautifuland there was a good crowd inattendance” he said. “It wasdefinitely one of the bestMannum shows I have been to -the day had a good feel andvibe.”
Natural Resources Management
On 24th February Mr Venningaddressed the house expressinghis concerns about the NaturalReso u r c e s M a n a g e ment(Review) Amendment Bill.
The following selected extractsfrom Hansard illustrate some ofhis concerns with the proposedlegislation.
“... I believe the NRM councilneeds a better balance. I believeit is top heavy with theorists andlight on practitioners. Why can’twe have, for example, stockagents represented on thecouncil, as well as a directrepresentative from pastoralists, because we do not have that. Irealise that we do have SAFFrepresentation on this committeealready, but I believe we need tohave representation fromspecific areas.”
Section 69(1)(d) contains thefollowing:
An authorised officer may, as mayreasonably be required in connectionwith the administration, operation orenforcement of this act, at anyreasonable time...
(d) with the authority of a warrantissued by a magistrate or incircumstances in which the authorisedofficer reasonably believes thatimmediate action is required, usereasonable force to break into or openany part of, or anything in or on, anyplace or vehicle;
“I cannot believe you couldwrite legislation that says‘authorised officer reasonablybelieves’. What sort of
accountability is that? Whatprotection is afforded to ourconst i tuents aga ins t anover-zealous officer?”
“We should not have officerswith that power. It should nothave been written. The actwould still work reallypositively, without having thatthere. If they give 48-hoursnotice, you will still get yourman if you need to get him, orher.”
“All I can say is that I cannotunderstand why in thisparliament ... do we introducelaws in relation to a body thatwas working extremely well? And it was. We had a very goodvolunteer involvement. It was alow-cost operat ion andextremely effective and, mostimportantly, the stakeholders(the landowners on the land) feltthey got good service. So, whatis happening now? We havebuilt a massive bureaucracy.
“Not only that, we have cost-shifted the cost away from stateg o v e r n m e n t o n t o t h elandowners, through the levies.Even worse, we are getting a lotpoorer service for that. I say thatguardedly.”
“... surely, you have to putownership of this back with thepeople it affects - that is, thelandowners, the people who loveand respect their land - and letthem make the decisionsthemselves rather than shoving itdown their throats.”
“I certainly hope that the upperhouse members - and I havebeen fairly judgmental of themover the years - are able toaddress these matters so that thelegislation can be a lot more userfriendly.”
President of the Mannum Show Society, Mr Stephen Vivian; Mid Murray CouncilMayor, Mr Dave Burgess and Member for Schubert, Mr Ivan Venning

The Shakespearean Tragedy
There is someone here to see you,”my wife told me as she returned
from answering the doorbell. Rightbehind her was a small rotund man witha round, red face, broad smile showinglarge white teeth and a chubby handextended in front.
“Alonzo Hyde, just called to welcomeyou to the street. You must come to ourmeeting at the hall next Monday, allocating parts for our new play.Understand you are into radio so youwill have had acting experience. Needpeople like you.” Actually I was CEO ofa company with licenses to operatestations in remote parts of the state andinterstate. He turned to Darlene. “I hearyou run a beauty parlour, you will beable to do the makeup for thethespians.” He smiled some more. “Seeyou there, must go, let myself out.” Andwith that he was gone.
We had just moved into March Street. It was a long street of beautiful homeswith spacious gardens and quiet. Thestreet was a dead end so that the onlytraffic was local. Located in the foothillsthe cost of the real estate keptundesirables out.
It was on the weekend that we met ournext door neighbours when they invitedus in for a barbecue.
“See you have met Can’t” said Jeff.“Can’t?” Darlene queried.“Can’t Hyde,” Jeff explained. “Got
parts in the play?” he smiled in aknowing way.
“Well not yet,” I told him.Again he smiled as though there was a
secret joke.“Oh, you will have. There are still one
or two parts not cast.”He wouldn’t say any more than that
except that we would find out onMonday night. He also told us that theannual play by the March street theatregroup was Can’t’s big thing. He was afrustrated actor who imagined that if hisstature had been different he would havebeen as great as Richard Burton or PeterO’Toole. Instead he had to settle forbeing a producer of amateur theatre. Thefunds raised by the plays were donatedto local charities and because of thenature of the neighbourhood the eventswere always well attended. Valuableprizes were donated to a concurrentlyrun raffle and it was a point of pride that
despite the indefatigable Hydeeverything went with a bang.
Monday came and Darlene and I foundourselves at the local hall which alsoserved as a theatre to the group. Alonzowas dashing around here and there andI was becoming increasingly frustratedas I tried to catch him to find out whatthe play was and what part I was to play.
Finally he acknowledged my presenceand took me aside. I was too stunned bywhat he told me to say anything. Hetook this for acquiescence and rapidlydisappeared to speak to some otherbewildered aspiring actor.
Jeff drifted over with a huge grin onhis face.
“The man’s mad,” I told him. The grinwidened. “He’s doing Shakespeare,Macbeth, and I am to play one of thewitches. He says the ladies won’t playwitches. He’s mad” I repeated andshook my head in bewilderment.
Again Jeff grinned. “You should studyyour Shakespeare. Remember what theSoothsayer told Julius Caesar.”
“What was that?” I asked, puzzled.“Beware the ’ydes of March.”

A taxi passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the pavement, andstopped inches from a shop window. For a second everything went quiet in the taxi, then the driver said, “Look mate, don’t ever do that again. You scared the daylightsout of me!” The passenger apologized and said he didn’t realise that a little tap could scare him so much. The driver replied, “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is myfirst day as a cab driver - I’ve been driving a hearse for the last 25 years!”
The Family Car – Part 2
When I married, myhusband was a city
boy. He expected me to beable to drive in traffic. Wedidn’t have those kinds offreeways and traffic where Icame from so he decided to“improve” my driving. Luckywe got married first - I don’tthink we’d have made itotherwise. He had a habit oflecturing as I drove, trying to“upgrade” my ability with thegearshift, (he hated thatgrating noise), the accelerator(I never gave it the rightamount of fuel at the righttime), the choke (did it ever),while teaching me the finerpoints of the competitionthey called driving in thecity. It was nerve wrackingand I finally lost it - at rushhour on a four lane freeway.I stopped and got out of thecar as brakes squealed and
startled drivers leant on theirhorns in disbelief, walkedaround to the passenger sideand handed my husband theke ys . H e s p l u t t e r edsomething like “You can’t dothat,” but it was too late. Ialready had.
The marriage survived andso far I have avoided anyserious accidents. Myhusband prefers me to drivean automatic and there havebeen a few of what we usedto call “fender benders”. It’sbeen a bit more expensivewithout the family smashrepair shop to fall back on.But I have improved. I knowthat for sure because I havebeen back home a few times. My aunt loaned me her caronce and it was like drivingrunaway horses. You had tokeep your foot hard on the
brake if you wanted to sitstill. She said she kept hercar “tuned the way she likedit” and the boys at “the shop”knew just what to do. Shetold me not to worry if I got aticket. They’d send it to herand she’d do what sheusually did with them. It wasa small town and her husbandwas Fire Chief and heworked in shared premiseswith the police station. I wasafraid to ask for details. Ishould add that she was all of4 feet 8 inches and drovewith a large wooden block onthe accelerator and a largercushion under her and sheonly drove “full sized” cars. You could barely see herbehind the wheel. Shecontinued to drive when shehad cataracts, and could onlysee out of one eye, until the
doctor took her license. Shegot it back as soon as she hadthe eye fixed. She was on thelist of things to warn rookiecops about when they signedup.
I think the genes werediluted a bit in the nextgeneration though my kidsused to tell their Dad to letme drive; we’d get therefaster. I do understand whytheir Dad insisted he be theone to teach them to drive. The kids haven’t had anytrouble. There have been afew mysterious accidents tothe driveway fence and mydaughter’s EH did need anew mudguard. He did insisttheir first cars be very sturdy.Still, they seem to havemanaged quite well. But thenthey don’t tell me everything.

environmental footprint followingthe introduction of the firstgreywater treatment system to meet anew standard for discharge intowaterways.
Aerofloat Australia recentlysatisfactorily completed testingrequirements for Certification to anew Australian Standard forgreywater treatment. The Standardhas been endorsed by the SouthAustralian Environmental ProtectionAuthority (EPA) and Aerofloat is thefirst company to comply with thedischarge requirements, which wereintroduced in 2009.
The standard - in conjunction withlegislation - was designed to improvethe quality of Australia’s delicateaquatic ecosystems by reducing theamount of untreated effluentdischarged into waterways.
President of the River Murray BoatOwners Association, Rob Potter, saidhe would distribute informationabout Aerofloat’s new system to hisfellow club members.
Meanwhile EPA chief executiveHelen Fulcher congratulatedAerofloat on being the first Companyto create a product which meets thedischarge requirements outlined inthe Standard.
“It’s pleasing to see that the
industry is embracing the Standardand offering vessel operatorssolutions to manage their greywatersustainably,” said Ms Fulcher.
Aerofloat managing director RayAnderson said the Certificationinvolved months of preparation and12 weeks of rigorous testing and it isan important milestone for theCompany.
“We would like to advise houseboatowners that Aerofloat staff have over40 years of experience in producingwaste water treatment plants,” hesaid.
“This broad experience has beenused to produce a robust,low-maintenance, high-treatmentcapacity and cost-effective greywatertreatment system.”
The Australian Standard testingand approval includes all of theproducts in the Aerofloat range, which consists of four models to suitvessels of different berths.
Mr Anderson said Aerofloat unitscan be installed into new builds orretrofitted onto existing vessels withease.
Members and affiliates of relevantboating associations may be eligiblefor an introductory offer on the newAerofloat 200 model.

Murray DarlingsMock Wedding
The invitation to the weddingof the century read as
follows: “Lord and Lady Darlingcordially invite you to a MOCKWEDDING, celebrating the‘nutty-ials’ betwixt MissyLoveheart Darling and RockerPergotty Punkster, son of theRed Hattsville Punksters”. Andwhat a ‘nutty’ day it was! Theevent was organised by our veryo wn W ed d i n g P l a n ne rextraordinaire, Coral Glanville(M’Lady Coral Reef) and shethought of everything to makethe day a wonderful success andhugely entertaining for all whoattended.
Coral carefully orchestratedthe whole event, giving those inthe ‘Wedding Party’ just enoughinformation to know whatcharacter they were playing, butthen we were given free rein todo our own costuming andspeeches. We were kept prettymuch in the dark about whateach person was doing, whichjust added to the fun for us all,as we were just as surprised onthe day as the rest of the guests. Those of us in costume had agreat time playing our differentcharacters, and what fun we allhad! The bride was a ‘blooming’young aristocrat from England, who had made an unlikely matchwith ‘Pergotty the Punk’, andthe day turned out to be not onlya wedding, but a celebration ofthe birth of twins, a boy called‘Master Axle Quincy RyderPunkster’ complete with aMohawk hairdo, and a girlcalled ‘Miss HoneysuckleRock-Belle Rose’ - wearing apretty red hat!
On arrival our guests werewelcomed with a glass ofchampagne, by our own maid“Totti Take-a-seat”, and butler“Jeorgeous Jeeves”. We had allsorts of interesting characters inthe wedding party, including“Anne-Di-Needafella” as headb r i d e s m a i d , “ G i z m oPullaswiftee” the best man, thefruit-loop bridesmaids “TweedleDum and Tweedle Dee”, “FairyFloss” the flower girl and“Shamus Shamrock” thePageboy. The celebrant was “themost Irreverant Rufus RedmondRapscallion”, and we even had amidwife in attendance during theceremony (just in case!) called“Delilah Deliverance”. When itcame time to ask if anyoneobjects to the marriage of thesetwo people, out of the audiencecame several objectors, including an ardent Crowssupporter who tried to convinceus that the bride was alreadymarried - to Eddie McGuire!
22 members of the new RedHatters chapter from Goolwa, the “Fabulass Fleurieu Fillies”,joined our Mock Wedding, andtheir two Queens (Lynne andAriana) did a wonderfultap-dance routine for us to thetune of “Going to the Chapel”.Queen Maureen from theAdelaide chapter also joined inthe fun, wearing her full royalrobes and crown, to add a touchof royalty to the day. And wehad some very special guests, visiting Mannum for a shortholiday, “Bunnykins Kate” andher fiancée “Willy”. The MurrayDarlings warblers and theirmusical director “TwinkleFingers Ivory Tickler” also
added to the mood of the day.We really cannot sing the
praises of Coral enough for allher hard work, and sheerbrilliance in pulling this eventoff so successfully, we alllaughed so much, and really, thatis such an important part of whatred hatting is all about. I thinkshe deserves a medal, just for allthe amazing names she came upwith for all the weddingcharacters!
Our next event also providedus with a lovely time to gettogether and have some fun, thistime hosted by Lois Rand: aQuiz night for 35 of ourmembers. The winning table wasthe “Nincompoops” and in closesecond was the “Old Crows”,who put in a protest(unsuccessfully!) by claimingthat the last two rounds were allabout South Australia, and thatwe only had one red hatter bornin SA on our table! We all hadso much fun that we plan tomake this event an annualoccurrence for the MurrayDarlings, and we even have aperpetual trophy to be won.Thank you Lois for the effortyou put into making this such asuccess.
This month we will becelebrating our third birthday, and in keeping with our age, wewill be holding a “Mad HattersTea Party” – Alice inWonderland style. If you wouldlike to know more about whatwe do (and why) please contactKaryn Baker, Queen of theMurray Darlings.
