Deputy Principal Kindergarten Orientation for 2020 Students There are two Kindergarten Orientation Days for students: Orientation One is on Wednesday 6th November from 9:45 - 11:00am. Orientation Two is on Tuesday 12th November from 9:45 - 11:00am. Students attend both orientation mornings. At the first orientation, we ask that parents join us in the hall for morning tea, a brief presentation and Q & A time once parents have taken their child to their designated orientation classroom. During the second orientation, we suggest that parents take their child to their orientation class and then leave the school grounds, returning just before 11:00am to collect their child. This is to simulate the procedures of a school day - ‘drop off’ and ‘pick up’. A Special Request to our Current Kindergarten Parents of Classes K Orange, K Yellow and K Silver Next Wednesday 6th of November, Manly West is welcoming our 2020 Kindergarten parents while their children are in their first orientation session. On this morning, we ask if you could please bring a plate of food to help cater for their morning tea. Please bring the plate to the hall prior to 9:20am and ensure you have your name and child’s class on the base of the plate so that it can be returned to you. Masking tape with your child’s name and class has worked well in the past. We thank you for your generosity in welcoming these new families to Manly West. Mrs Wendy Mwanga Deputy Principal

The PBEL for this week is: Sun Safety

Make sure you wear a school hat during recess and lunch and also during

outside school activities.

Deputy Principal Year 3 Design & Make Project Base Learning Task As part of the unit ‘Heating Up’ Year 3 have been busy completing a project based activity to design and make a lunch box to keep food fresh. The Learning Intention for this activity was to design and make a lunchbox that effectively keeps food intact and fresh for school. Year 3 followed the design and make process to complete the task and reach the success criteria. Today during fruit break they shared their lunchboxes with the grade. This formed part of the evaluation process of their design.

PBEL - Sun Safety Students are reminded to make sure they have a school hat labelled with their name and current class. As part of our Sun Safety policy students are expected to wear a school hat during recess and lunch and also during outside school activities. During play times, students without hats are required to play under the shade shel-ters. SPF 30+ sunscreen is provided in classrooms for students use.

Manly West Before and After School Care (BASC) Seniors Week ahead 3 /4 Room - This week in the 3/ 4 room we w ill be doing Halloween inspired craft, making a haunted house window display featuring spiders, cobwebs and ghosts made with different materials. Outside, we will be embracing the warm weather and doing activities such as ‘Golden Child’ and ‘Around the world basketball competition’ and sharing the coloured equipment with the Year 2s, so the children can collaborate with the different year groups. We will also be displaying our dance moves with educator Gabby running a hip-hop incursion. 5/6 Room - In the 5 / 6 room this week, we are going to be getting into the Halloween spirit and making decorations to hang around the room for Halloween. Games of Stick Ball Touch Footy and ‘Volleyball Piggy in the Middle’ will be run outside for the kids who’d rather an outdoor activity. We will be trialling a couple of new transition games for the 5/6 kids (‘Cockroach in the Kitchen’ and ‘Elimination Snap’), and we will be finishing off the week with a bubble soccer incursion run by Fit Kids’ incursions

If your child is going to be absent from BASC, you must notify our office so we can give casual places away.

Meet our Educators

“Hi I’m Dolly! I’ve been working at BASC for 4 years and loving it! You’ll find me in the K-1 room where I enjoy interacting and having meaningful conversations with the children. Over the years I’ve been working at BASC it has been so nice getting to know all the children and families as well as them getting to know me. “

Chess competition

On Monday the 21st of October, 22 Manly West students travelled to Mona Vale Public School for the Northern Beaches Primary Schools One-Day Chess Teams Tournament. Our players ranging from Kindergarten to Year 6 represented Manly West beautifully. Congratulations to Noah Zingsheim-Smith, Zander Highland, Liam Poutney, Kasper Lowe, Rhys Weaving, Cameron Green, Ben Cammack, Leo Watanangura, Theo Ray, Jamie Phegan, Felix Phe-gan, Thomas Lawler, Luella Moschou, Isabella Stephenson, Alex-ander Bush, Max Metaxiotis, Hamish Barton, Max Gooley, Isaac Kriletic, Maxx Brown, Richard Yang and Rami El Fahim. The com-petition was very strong and we missed out on winning a trophy but it was a wonderful experience for the students, especially for the students who were attending their first chess tournament. A big thank you to Katja Phegan, Belinda Lawler, Christine Cammack, Ian Stephenson, Kate Bush, Matt Ray and Yvette Gooley for your help transporting the children and supervising them.

We will be selling the Kitchen Garden cookbook at a Xmas Special price for two weeks only. Cash sales under the big tree Friday's 8th & 15th November. You will be able to buy online for the discounted price. Limited stock available so get in quick. Whole school Working Bee - Saturday November 2nd 2-4.30pm

Please sign up to come along and help. We will be working in and around the Kitchen Garden and in the gardens next to the Yr 6 area. Jobs will include rubbish collection, weeding, tidying up plants/bushes, some planting and mulching. Many hands make light work! Please go to SignUpGenius to sign up. The instructions are the same as for the School Compost Bins sign up except you search for "MW Working Bee".

The Manly West War on Waste continues... In our Waste Audit in Term 2 we discovered that Manly West produced 473L of rubbish on ONE day, that currently all goes to landfill. That is approximately 6 standard-size (80L) rubbish bins. By comparison, at the Waste Sorting Station at the Carnival for an event that attracted 6000 people, we produced only 320L of landfill rubbish! This shows us what can be done if waste is sorted properly. The focus for Term 4 is on Nude Food! Please see the information and advice on pages 5 and 6 for how to do this. Composting and worm farming workshops @ Ecohouse at Kimbriki If you're concerned about climate change, learn how to compost and worm farm at one of these Ecohouse workshops on Sat 16th Nov. The cost is $30 and you get a voucher for a free worm farm or compost (one per household). Food waste that goes to landfill breaks down anaerobically producing methane and carbon dioxide, and both are potent greenhouse gases. School Compost Bins Please sign up to help turn our compost bins and water the Kitchen Garden. Go to Signupgenius.com search under my email address, [email protected] for "Manly West Kitchen Garden" and sign yourself up for a day that suits. If you haven't done this before, email me and we can arrange a garden orientation. If you are bringing kitchen scraps from home to add to the school compost bins, you must be signed up at least once per term. Please do not put ANY bags in the bins, even if they say they are compostable or biodegradable.

Library News

Meet our marvellous Monday Library Monitors, Coco, Emily, Audrey and Callan! These girls are

great friends and enjoy the time helping in the library together, and it shows in their smiles and

how they take pride in their work in the library. They’re terrific at

scanning and shelving but don’t like it when the students don’t

appreciate their efforts. Mrs. Burke and I certainly do, and all children

should, too! Their reading choices are many – biographies, adventures,

mysteries and comedies are their top picks. Their favourite authors are

Morris Gleitzman, David Walliams and JK Rowling.

If you come at 2nd half lunch in the library, you might see children using their creativity with game pieces

in different ways such as pictured here. Hope to see you in the library soon!

Just a friendly reminder that all students have been given the final issue of Scholastic Book Club

catalogues last week if you would like to order summer reading or holiday gifts. Please order

online using the LOOP system or by handing in the completed order form and cheque (made out

to Scholastic Australia) before or by Friday, November 8th, 2019. This way you will receive your

orders well before the end of year rush! DO NOT FORGET to mark your order as a GIFT ORDER

if you do not want everything to be delivered to your child’s classroom to spoil any surprises!

There is no obligation to make any purchases, but if you do that helps the school library, too. So

thank you very much for your orders!

Happy reading!

Mrs Ellen Swick
