MurrLJrnbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc. - "FOOTY RECORD" - 1998

When was the last time Wagga v Leeton rated as the Riverina Football League match of the round? You would have to turn back a few pages in the record books to come up with the answer.

But that's exactly how it shapes up this weekend with the unbeaten Tigers and LeetonWhitton the highest placed teams to do battle.

Tigers atop the ladder after another close call last weekend and the Crows marching on with three wins on the trot and in fourth place.

This match looms as a real test of character for the Crows who have already performed beyond their own expectations this season.

If the Crows can crack Tigers then they deserve every accolade coming their way. It's been a big year so far for the Crows and while nobody really expects them to beat Tigers, it's possible anything could happen in a topsy turvy season.

Tigers have held out three times this season to win by less than a goal. That's an encouraging sign for other teams with the Wagga team again the benchmark to success.

Tigers will again be hard to beat this year but some results have suggested if you're good enough the Tigers factor could be overcome.

Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes clawed their way back onto the winner's list with a narrow win against East Wagga-Kooringal. The Goannas are still out of the five on percentages and face a crucial match-up with Temora this weekend.

Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong gave Tigers a shake last weekend but without luck and hold onto fifth spot ahead of the Goannas with 5-5 win-loss.

The Lions' game against the Narrandera juggernaut will be another feature match this weekend.

The Eagles celebrated long and hard after their decisive win against Turvey Park and that must be a great kick-a-long as the downhill run to the finals begin.

Narrandera will be full of confidence against the Lions who risk dropping out of the five if the Goannas beat Temora.

Narrandera on the other hand will be eyeing second spot. They are equal on points with Turvey Park who take on Coolamon this week.

The Grasshoppers showed great endeavour last weekend to win their first match of the season, showing Temora no mercy in front of a Roos home crowd.

Coolamon finished full of steam when the game was all tied up at the last change - a great win for a bunch of youngsters who have waited patiently for success this season.

What an effort if they could back up against the Bulldogs ... time will tell!

Griffith will be desperate to beat East Wagga-Kooringal but there's no discounting the chances of the Hawks.

After scoring their first win a few weeks ago they were pipped by MCUE by seven points last week.

So it seems the Hawks are running into some sort of form which should concern the Swans.

Another loss for Griffith here and their finals chances will be starting to slip away. A mustwin situation for the Swans at Griffith.

Another exciting win - this time against last years grand final contestants - the Lions!

Down 17 points at half time the boys rallied to scrape home by 3 points - the five goal third quarter being the catalyst for the win. Considered as a danger game by TD he certainly would have been happy to get away with the four points. The brilliance of Mark Stone and Darren Cook paved the way for a memora_ble win, its to~gh anytime against the Lions particularly on their home turf and these two 50 gamers played a big part last Sunday. Paul Noack, Terry Daniher, Andrew and Steven Priest - all big efforts.

The Two's big winners 17.12.114 to 7.1.43 with David Reeve back on the ground with 4 goals. Consistent footy from the Vinnieman (Vince Rossignolil) as well as good efforts from Steven Cook, Mark Drum, Aaron de Jong, Anthony Roy and Glenn Elliott. We"ve had some great Magoos over the years - they've received some big wraps and fallen in a heap in September - donit worry boys your just an ordinary bunch of guys doing a pretty good job - keep it up!

The 18is under coach Anthony Lyons another good effort wining 12.12.86 to 5.8.38. Winnin_g efforts from David Rava, Andrew Dwyer, Chris Drum Andrew Brown, Tim Pankhurst and Luke Syde~ham. Try and get along to see the 18's matches - these guys are the future of our club and its worth catching a glimpse of their spirit and commitment.

LEETON-WHITTON (~llf)l\1S Our win against Mango was described on radio

as Mango being woeful. I wonder how they will describe how Griffith played last week. Griffith and Mango were beaten by a better football team- the Leeton/Whitton Crows.

Last weeks win was magnificent and it was fantastic to see such a large crowd at Davis Saunders Oval. Among those noticed were Whitton greats Jim Geltch, John Gavel and Ronny Watts along with sponsor Jeff Oartnell. Great to see these fellows there and isn't amazing what success is doing to the crows both on and off the field.

The firsts game, somewhat spiteful at times, was won in the last quarter, with Matty Sharman coming into his own and showing how good he is to claim the bottle of JD.Matty Robertson just gets better each week and won the Lloyd Pilkington shirt while the "elder statesman" Dave Meline won the Kurrajong Car wash,. Fourth on the ladder and a place in the finals at the end of the year is the very achievable goal which must be maintained.

The two's had a fantastic win over the second placed Griffith and what a team effort it was. The boys are playing great football at the moment and a higher place on the ladder must be a goal for them also. It was good to watch Neil Mccallum kick 7 goals in his first game - Welcome Neil & family to the Leeton Crows. Harley Bateup played a game we know he is capable of to win the JD Tee shirt, while captain/coach Matt liley won the Riverina Butchery meat pack and Andrew Soley, his second award in a row will eat at the Blues' Cafe.

The 1 B's was our only loss for the day but they put in a good effort in a fairly fiery game. Griffith were just a little bit bigger and more skilled than the younger Crows on the day. Brett O'Mara played well to win the Jon Jay Pizza, Bob Hoskinson received the JD cap and Nigel Durkin battled hard to win the Bolton Pest Control award. Sheeney's coach's award went to Daniel Lumsden.

The netballers played just one game - the A grade match- which they won 72-5, with Michelle Lumsden judged best on court. The goal scorers sheet would

have been interesting reading On the social scene - don't forget to mark down

August 8 in your diary for the Darkdown Strutters Ball. Organise some friends, book a table and come along to see the 1978 Premiership side, who are having a Reunion on the night.

This week we take on the tigers at their home ground. they have scraped home in recent weeks -their luck must be ready to run out - I can't see why the crows can't stop their winning streak.

MANGOPLAH-COOKARDINIA UNITED EASTLAKES (.C)1'1~N1t.~ Last week's game turned out to be a real

struggle with the boys getting up for a good win in the last quarter. In a game that they really needed to win all of the boys had a 'real dip' with Merv giving them all a good wrap. The mug was won by William Lloyd who did an excelleht job in tagging East Wagga's coach out of the game. Mark 'Spook' Wegener played an excellent game and took a huge number of marks in the backline to keep us in the game he won the Don Tuckwell's Audio award. Merv couldn't pick between the whole team with the one vote so he gave it to everyone.

The Reserves struggled all day after losing a few players to the Firsts and through injury, they were beaten by a more committed side, even though they did play some good football. Three votes went to David Pike who had a great game winning 2 votes. Brian 'Larry' McRae tried hard all day to win the one vote. Come on fellas, let's all get behind Darcy and maybe he might not be so grumpy!

The U18s put in a great effort (especially the first half) although they were beaten in the end. The Civic Video award was won by Adam Shepherd - well done.

Onto the netball, no Juniors were played last week. The girls were beaten in C Grade where Peta Anderson won the mug again! She will be in danger of becoming an alcoholic. B Grade won convincingly. Our new recruit Bronwyn Harris won the mug. A Grade won by 40 goals with Heath Chisolm winning the mug.

"Put your brain to the test at our Trivia Night tonight''. $8 per head. Join a table of 8. Plenty of seats still available. BYO nibbles and drinks. See Kym Hawke. A bus trip has been organised to Melbourne on the weekend of the bye (July 25 & 26) to the footy. Everyone is welcome. Cost is $65 per person for the bus and accommodation. All names to Tony Matthews, Darren Cole or Nathan Stoll.

Today we play the Temora Roos, let's send them home winless from our home ground.

TEMORA 1{1.\Nf.1-lllf)f)S Before I start, I'd like to congratulate

Coolamon on a well deserved win. Now this may come off sounding like sour grapes, but I'm going to say it anyway. Unless there's been a rule change that I am unaware of, I don't think goal umpires are allowed to verbally abuse opposition fullforwards from the start to finish of a quarter. If you have any imformation, please enlighten me.

The Seconds snapped a lengthy losing streak with a four goal Players' Player went to Chris Cole's body double, Nathan "Grub" McNeil. The Westy Schooners went to menacing centre half-forward Craig Maxwell, while the socks went to the elusive goalsneak with the dead ordinary beard, Chris "Shickle" McCormack. The challenge is now there to win 2 in a row.

What can I say about the Ones - a massive disappointment. Logic suggests that the more often you train, the less mistakes you make and that's probably us in a nutshell. Players' Player went to tagging specialist Matthew "Rednuts" Gilchrist. Best non-contract player went to impressive debutante Cameron "Rockin" Rowling, who took a heap of "Jurassic Parks". The Westy award went to tight fisted fullback cum rangy CHF Matthew "Flappy'' Derrick and the socks went to hard running centreman Anthony "Horse" Breust.

Netballers had a successful day, winning 4 out of 4. The Juniors romped home 66-4 with Andrea Fritsch taking the award. Tracey Neil was best for the C Graders who won 25-21. B Grade stopped their slump with a 23-19 win, Heather Krause taking the Mug while the A Grade had a 49-26 victory with Amanda Miller BOC (Best on Court).

For all the blokes who played in the Seniors against Coolamon, think about how you felt at the end of the game before you run out today. If you're in need of motivation, that should do it for you.

EAST WAGGA-KOORINGAL 1111117l{S It was like a big night out, you think your

going all right at the time and then you wake up and realise you didn't score.

The U18's righted the ship with a solid win, interesting times ahead with a top three spot there to be secured over the next couple of weeks. The Coke award went to David Leech. The Argweld sox was won by Andrew Pearce and the McDonalds went to James Geale.

With a bit more manure and taking right options when the muscles want to all fall down, will win the games that the firsts should have won. Jamie Charlton kicked a bag full and won the Breusts Pewter & William Farrer dinner. Geoff Hopkins won the Sportsmens warehouse sox and Damien Graham will dine out on an Eagle Boys Pizza. the Wagga First Aid Players best player award went to jack.

The seconds are really on a roll mixing youth and agility with experience and position. Adam Trevaskis took out the Breusts Pewter & Mark Anthony's menswear award. Rob Martin took out the Cornells petrol award. Tom Wood won the Miller Truck Hire Sox award. Adam Trevaskis was voted the players best player.

Over on the netball courts the girls kept their consistency going with another one two result. The A & B grade girls really really reall). are trying to break the sequence, af\d they will one d_ay soon. The mug in C grade went to Liz Fraunfelder, the B grade mug won by Nicole Limberick and Nicole McPherson won the A grade. Naiomi Louttit took out the Walker chemicals award.

Dare did a good of impersonating either Leechy or Raiders' at the bad taste night. Good night had by all.

Congratulations to the Junior players who made their representative teams, will tell you who they are next week.

The long haul over to Griffith this week, bus trips taste much better with a win. Up the Perquisite Hawks.

Murrumbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc. - "FOOTY RECORD" - 1998

COOLAMON C, ll1lS S II f) ,, ,, I~ IlS The town was a rocking on Saturday night after

an inspirational victory over Temora in the Ones. In what was a great four quarter display of footy, the boys fought it out to the end to record a great win that has been coming for the past weeks. The club is looking for a volunteer to write the club song out for Jardie, but he did a good impersonation of Milli Vanilli. Awards went to Andrew McCaig $100 for a display of _rucking that would of put Harry Madden to shame, $75 to Matt McKinlay who easily put in his best performance of the year, $50 to Rocket O'Brien who all day turned defence into attack, $25 to Ryan (goal sneak) Barty who kicked goals at crucial times of the game and the Goode Award to Bongo Drum for his usual great game in defence. A special mention to Tubba McKelvie who took possibly the mark of the year.

The Magoos, a little less fortunate, but still played a very committed four quarters of football, narrowly went down to Temora in a game that was · dominated by dubious and disgraceful umpiring. But to their credit they stuck to their guns and I'm sure a win is also around the corner. Awards - Cecil Parr $50, who has been a very consistent player all year. $25 to Trev Beaver who must be coming under the selectors eye for a run in the top grade, $15 to Grub Rowlands who put in a very sound game and $1 0 to Echo who played his typical hustle bustle, no-nonsense game in defence.

Before the netball news the club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the Simone Parker and family on the passing of Neville who played for the Hoppers approx 3 years ago.

To the nutty netballers - unfortunately there were not victories but all four games were very hotly contested. In the Juniors Temora proved a little too experienced for our girls and we went down 4-66 with Bridget Edis getting the award._ C Grade again narrowly went down 21 ~25_, with Rebecca Mills with her sharp shooting picking up the award. When C Grade finally crack the big one I am sure they will celebrate just as hard as t~e footballers. B Grade were also narrowly beaten m a closely contested game and Kylie Parr picked up the main award. In A Grade Temora put a halt to the girls winning streak by going down 25-49 with the DA's Rebecca Rudd winning the aw~rd. · This week we play Turvey Park, let's see if we can keep our 100% winning record in the second round in the Ones intact.

GANMAIN-GRONG GRONG-MATONG I~I () N s We had our chances but couldnit quite

bridge the gap against the Tigers. Anthony Carroll defended strongly all day to win the Sports Club Award. Rick Pritchett won the Brittons Towel award and Michael Steele won the Wagga First Aid Mug. Miltons Gear voting was (3) Anthony Carroll, (2) Michael Steel, (1) Damien Carroll. The Bridge Tavern dinner went to Damien Carroll.

The Reserves put in an improved performance with Michael Mazzochi winning the Bowling Club award, Shannon Dohl the Ganmain Store Towel and Andrew Hatty the Webbers Dinner.

The Under 1 Sis also put in an improved performance with Nathan McPherson winning the Club Towel, Nathan Irvine the Four Hotels award and Eddie Sullivan the Socks Award.

Silver Circle has finally commenced with draw 1 going to 364 T&S Purcell, 119 Kev and. Barb Richards, 187 Jason Linsell.

Netball News - sun shining but a bleak day as far as the score board went in the 4 grades.

Juniors still timid at times, which makes it hard to take out a win, consistency for 4 quarters is needed to gain control of the game. Taking out the Socks Cheryl Haughton. C Grade started on a simmer and finsihed on the boil, but could not overtake the opposition going out on the clock. Mug going to Brigette Milne. B Grade again a slow first quarter and then coming out strong in the next 3 quarters left them short on the day. The game displayed some strong play by the girls. Mug going to Rachael Hamblin. A Grade brilliant for the first 3 quarters, and a lull in the 4th ended the run by going down by a short margin which was disappointing. A very strong, fast game by both teams. Mug going to Tania Lawton.

This week we visit the Narrandera Eagles where a win is a must.

NSVV-ACT RA:M:S . NSW-ACT RAMS V' BENDIGO PIONEERS

At half time it can be said that a few strong words came from the voice box of Steve Wright. He very quietly pointed out to the team that their first half performance was pretty ordinary. In fact he used the fact that the opposition had gone off the ground at the long break calling our players soft. Our players had allowed the opposition to break tackles and time and time again run forward of the ball with ease after we had lost possession due to poor skills. It would be accurate to say that without Nick Davis in the first half we would have been five goals down.

Now the players could have sulked over the coaches words but to their credit they came out after half time and put in a terrific performance. The intensity lifted, players started to run to create targets and we started to find those targets with hand and foot. The team showed great character to get back in the match in the third term and then proceeded to dominate the last quarter and run the Pioneers into the ground.

As mentioned, Nick Davis was probably our saviour early in the game and he continued to be a prolific possession winner in the second half. He is what I call an instinctive player - he

reads the game exceptionally well and allows his great athletic ability to guide his way around the ground. Ray Hall put in another fine performance in the ruck winning many clever hit outs, feeding out a million handballs and displaying great mobility on the ground. Peter McGrath on the wing continued to grow in confidence and is going to be a very good player. Another of the younger brigade, David LePavoux was a class act in the centre and has a healthy appetite for the· ball. Others to impress were Luke Ellis, Brad Flinn (who sets a great example to the team with his long runs down the ground), Shane Demir and Craig Bolton. A special mention to Glen Currie who was back in the team after a couple of weeks absence. He gave us some real pace and life around the ground in an impressive performance.

A few weeks off now with the National Championships in Adelaide and a bye. Our next match is in Melbourne on Sunday, July 19 against the Western Jets. We wish the lads all the very best in Adelaide.

RIVERINA UMPIRES ASSOCIATION '~port' Rule of the week question: The ball is kicked out after a point by the full

back, lands inside the boundary and then goes out of bounds without touching any players. Is this a throw in or a free kick to the full backs opposing team?

The social committee wishes to advise all members not to forget the Dutch Auction at the · Rules Club on the 18th of July commencing at 7.30 p.m. with all members AND FAMILIES AND FRIENDS most welcome. The concept of a Dutch Auction, for those not familiar with it, is that you bring along an article, which can be whatever your imagination comes up with, wrapped to disguise it, and it will be auctioned off to the highest bidder who may be the proud purchaser of something very surprising to them. We will not be using real money on the night, as we will be selling funny money to people to bid with. Costs will be given

as the evening gets closer. We have been recently supplying Canberra

with umpires which is of great benefit to us as it demonstrates how fortunate we are to have good numbers, so if any members wish to have a run over there please advise Gary Frater at training.

If you are a retired player and are looking to stay involved in our great game or are looking to keep fit and enjoy some financial rewards, please contact Norm Webb, Garry Frater or myself and we will only be too happy to help you on your way.

Rule of the week answer: The correct decision is a free kick to the

opposing side. The reason for advising this rule is that there is still confusion at some clubs so hopefully this clarifies this rule.

Until next week. Dean Ryan Publicity Officer RUA.

Some interesting results in last weekend's round of matches in the RFL. Coolamon players and supporters are· on a high after finally c,racking it for their first win for the season. THis was achieved with a majority of 'young guns' in the team. The obvious ploy of the coach and selectors to Implement this youth policy, especially as the team will not make the finals, has had immediate results -well done Hoppers! The success of the 'Green Machine' virtually snuffed out any hope that the Temora Kangaroos had of making the finals. In other games, the Eagles soared, the Bulldogs losttheir bite; the clash at Leeton was one for the birds with the Crow variety clipping the Swans feathers. The remaining matches were real arm wrestlers which were in the balance until the final 'hooter'. The Goannas came over top of the Hawks at Gumly by the odd goal; while at Ganmain the Tigers nudged the Lions out to pinch the four points by 4 points. All eyes now are on the Eagles and the Crows who have breathed new life into the competition. The improvement of both these finals aspirants will be tested in this round when they clash with G-GG-M Lions and Wagga Tigers respectively.

Results from the last round of matchs in the Farrer League were a little more predictable with the more favoured teams taking the points. The closest game was the clash at the Crossroads between the former RFL teams and 'hell' beat 'heaven' for a change with the Demons over the Saints by nine points. In other games, the undermanned Bushpigs made the Magpies work hard at CSU and at Langtry Oval the Bombers pushed the Stars after a slow start. The final encounter at Ariah Park saw the home team increase their percentage by the odd 26% over the Cootamundra Blues.

The Narrandera Imperial Football Club Winter Ball will be held at the Narrandera Ex-Services Club on Saturday July 25 starting at 7 p.m. It will feature two hours of entertainment by Rodney Vincent followed by a disco. Dress is formal, there will be a light supper and all are welcome to come along. Bookings to Joyleen Hutchins on (02} 69563219 (phone or fax). Tickets are $20 single or $35 per double.

Allan Wallett the "all round sport" from out Griffith way is running a "Sports Quiz" on Radio 2RG each Saturday morning on his sport program.

Each week he will feature two local footy clubs and supporters are asked to ring in and have a crack at the 1 o questions. The program is on air between 9 a.m. and 12 noon with the quiz section usually some time after 11 a.m.

The Rock-Yerong Creek Magpies will stage their "Black & White Ball" on July 18 at the Kings Own Hotel. Music will be provided by "Inside Out", and maybe, just maybe, Porky and Verdo will make a guest appearance to do a special duet rendition of the "Call of the lar~" or the "Magpie theme song" - whichever 1s appropriate!! The cost is $15 per head. The hot supper will be served at 7 .30pm and gentlemen are requested to wear a tie. Should be a great night.

Murrumbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc. • "FOOTY RECORD" -1998

Last weekend signalled the first of the "return" matches in the MVAFA Mercantile Mutual Farrer League competition and with results going {winner-wise) exactly as they did in the opening round of the season, it further stresses the thought expressed in last week's Editorial that the top teams at the half-way mark of the competition would indeed be the same come finals' time.

It's difficult to see too many First Round · results of home-and-away games being

reversed, so perhaps it's just a case of seeing out the next eight weeks for the bottom three teams, a continuation of good winning form from the top three and a contest among three for the two other final five positions. The three inferred are Ariah Park-Mirrool, North WaggaRAAF and Marrar, all equal on points at the moment with four wins from their nine starts, but with APM holding a huge percentage advantage, most of which' was gained last Saturday after their 218 point win over a disappointing Cootamundra side.

This afternoon, North Wagga-RAAF has a big chance to poke their noses ahead of the other two contenders, when they meet an injury-riddled Rivcoll team at North Wagga's McPherson Oval. The Saints performed well against Collingullie-Ashmont last Saturday, going down by just nine points to the third-

placed Demons and coach Gavin Hofert will be hoping his charges continue that form in today's clash.

Another of the three "middle" teams, Marrar, must face up to the undefeated leaders, TRYC at The Rock. These two teams have produced some great contests over the past three years, especially, but Marrar will have to lift a cog or two to match it with the Magpies this afternoon. Ariah Park-Mirrool can't improve their position, as they have the bye today, prior to a very important clash with neighbouring Ardlethan next Saturday.

In the other two games of the round, Ardlethan meet Uranquinty-Kapooka at the Ardlethan Sportsground, and Cootamundra play host to Collingullie-Ashmont. The Stars are undefeated this season on their hoe ground and should remain so after today's match. One Ardlethan player who's sure to receive some extra "attention" from the Rosellas is young giant, Adam Jack, who spent the last few seasons of football out at Kapooka. Cootamundra, in past years, were always up to a six-goal better side at home than away, but that factor doesn't seem to be as relevant this season and Laurie Pendrick's Demons have a big chance of a percentage-boosting win.

The big news from last week was the victory by the seconds over the ladder leaders. It was a tremendous effort which all concerned can be justifiably wrapped in. This has given them· just the kick that they needed at exactly the rig~t time. There were some good performances with a mixture of age and experience with youth and exuberience. The Tyreworld Mug - Conrad Haggar. The Porky & Verda Mug - Paul Kirk. The Rivspray Ag'n'Vet socks - Brad Merrills. The Ladies Auxiliary $10 Awards - Wade Murphy and Steven Thompson. Well done to all.

The Firsts then took the field among the europhoria and didn't actually set the field alight but still recorded a comfortable win. It really is a big area to run around on and for some reason we never seem to play our best there. Still the pigs never let us rest all day and I think that their coach thinks that he had a moral victory over us. All the best for the rest of the year Dase. Our Awards went like: The Rock Butchery Mug - Mark O'Leary. The Yerong Hotel Mug - Chris Masterson. The Rivspray Ag'n'Vet socks - David Gardiner. The Amateur Awards - $40 Wayne Corbett and $20 Mick Williams.

WOW, wasnit the Prawn & Chicken Night with Rodney Vincent a rip snorta??

Everyone enjoyed themselves to the fullest & thanks go to Bear & Wendy for all the laughs. Thanks to my helpers, it made the job that much easier on the night. Now to the footy.

The 2is fought out a hard game to run away with a good win in the end. The only downer, wishing him a speedy recovery & a quick return to the paddock. Rocky you know what they do to horses who break their legs?? The Mug went to Wes who for 4qtrs burrowed in harder than Horse eating a hotdog. Rusty is taking me out for the D42 & Flanno won the Stubbies & a little rubbery thing.

The 1 is werenit as successful, they had a sluggish first half but came back with a vengeance in the 3rd qtr only to run out of steam in the final term. If they could be consistent for 4 solid qtrs theyid be a force to reckon with in the finals. Frankie won the Mug & the $40, KB won the D42, Harrow $30, Kewy $20 & Darren $10.

The Netballers couldnit match it either with the only victors being the Baby Bombers.

The Awards went to A Grade - Maryann, G Grade - Christina, C Grade - Belinda & Babyis - Breanna.

The Club wishes Danny Pinn all the best for a quick recovery, we are all thinking of you.

Things are certainly hotting up on the social scene around the club, with many, many wonderful events set to take the town by storm with more ferocity than Molly Meldrum doing a striptease at the Blue Oyster Bar. This weekend, the 4th July, we will be having a Family BBQ and Cracker night at the Ardlethan Sportsground after todays game - stick around and we'll put the big bang theory to the test. After the Ariah Park game on the 11th ~uly, we are having a mystery bus tour, anyone interested give Tinman a call. The Nutty Netballers are having a "Theme" Trivia night on the 1st August at the London, with all tables having to dress up in a theme of their choice. The Farmers Home are putting on a BBQ after the Nth Wagga game, so lets get along and support Crouchie and thank him for supporting us. More news next week ...

The Mighty Magoos battled harder all day than a one legged Canadian Chippendale at a 25th anniversary ladies college reunion, but couldn't quite match it with the Marrar boys. Votegetters were (5) Gerard "Bishop" Carroll, .(4) Tony "Have a bounce" Pratt, (3) Matt "Ronald" McDonald, (2) Craig "Black'N'" Whyte, (1) Leon 'The Beanpole" Roberts. The Farmers Home voucher went to Peter Wykes and the London Hotel Meal to Gedda Carroll. The Mug went to the meanderer of the mauls, the soothsayer of the scrum, our very own "Rugby Convert???", Tony Pratt.

The Ones ended their hapless losing streak by defeating a determined Marrar outfit, despite getting lester than Drew Carey at an all you can eat tofu and brussell sprout smorgasboard in the 3rd quarter. Votegetters were (5) Ian "Forest, Forest Gump" Carroll, (4) Matthew 'The Human Twistie" Currie, (3) Adam "Milo Carrigan" Jack, (2) David "Here comes the bride" Currie, (1) Glenn "Lay on a" Bench. Schnoogs and Tinners also played well again, with a special mention for James "Bubba" Murray. The Farmers Home voucher went

Murrumbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc. • •FOOTY RECORD" - 1998

l1111111r111L•-It was a great day for the players and

supporters when the Reserves drew and the Seniors defeated Cootamundra.

In the Reserves they were down by a few goals going into the last quarter but they rallied to obtain a draw which with any luck would have been a win. It was a terrific team effort by all with the following players standing out: Dave McIntyre, Steve Gibbs, Neil Marks and Jason Stephenson.

At long last the seniors had their first win for the season. It was a win that was expected albeit long over due. Our game plan was to keep them down to a low score in the first quarter and to overcome them in the second which we acheived. We then continued on with the majority of possession throughout the remainder of the game. The switch of play and the run out of the backline finally appeared and the delivery to the forwards on most occassions was affective. There were many good players but the standout ones were Jamie Pitt who kicked five goals from the centre, Mathew Patching who covered more ground then Bourke & Wills and Greg Johnson who repelled many at attack. A special mention should also go to Craig Lander and Steve Annett who in their first game in seniors put in solid performances.

This week we play Ardlethan in what will be a hard assignment for both sides. But it gives both sides the opportunity to continue on with the good form they both showed in their last games. Once again we will have several new players in both sides and this should prove to be a bonus for both sides. Finally to all players and supporters remember that on the 11th July after The Rock game we will be having a function at the Uranquinty Hotel.

It will start at 7pm, a Spit Roast and entertainment will be provided at a cost of $7 per head.

The Naughty and Nutty Netballers played Marrar last week with the Under 14's having a close hard game, going down by only 4 goals -great effort girls. The C grade game saw great play by all the girls, with Gemma Foster shooting a steady hand and Natalie Brigdon controlling centre court, the Stars had a great victory. B Grade continued on their winning streak, Sue Flagg had a great game, with Sheree Whyte moving and shooting well up forward. Fast, accurate passing and superb shooting by the A Graders resulted in a good victory over Marrar 52 to 43. Best of luck this week ladies!!!

This week we welcome Uranquinty-Kapooka to our home turf, they are not a side to be taken lightly, so lets play it hard, tough and fast to come away with victories all round.

Certainly not a day to remember at the park last week but certainly the players

available showed great commitment & are

to be congratulated on their spirit. Award winners in Seniors were Andy

Ingold (Mug) Jamie Pursehouse (Albion $30) & Todd who took out the supporters socks.

In the Two's "Sarge" Pippers again displayed his big heart to win the Mug, Tim Nixon continued a fine debut season to win

the Albion $20 & the other Bulldog, Rick Evans took out the supporters socks. Hope we see them today Rick.

The girls hit back hard after last weeks loss to record wins in both netball matches

& a chance of both teams making the finals for the first time ever. Emily Todd took out the A grade Mug with Cyndy Gardner the B grade winner.

Still a few spots available for the players trip away to Melbourne in September, see Justin Smith for details.

Today we are home which should be a help. It is also the Junior Family Day with a kids exhibiton match at half time in Seniors so lets give them our support.

Awards at 6.30 at the Olympic. Lets make it a big day & night.

Murrumbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc. - "FOOTY RECORD" - 1998

He's baaaaack, and great to see him on the track after all his injury toll has kept him off the field for so long. Welcome Shane Whyte. A good day for footy and two good wins. A couple of new recruits took the field in the Magoos and made their presence felt. Welcome Scott Lewington and Mark Price. The Major award went to the every improving Gareth Shaw, the Salon Christie Haircut to Tim Hansell, the Six Pack to the veteran Paul Gillett and the Coaches award to Craig Price.

In the Ones a fiery game wasn't any surprise, Dick (Toes) Carey fired up front with 8 goals, Brett Whyman keeps getting better and better. Our little mate with a giant sized heart bores in where angels fear to tread, gets a split eyebrow for his trouble but can we keep him off the field, not on your nelly. Our mighty little captain came off with an ankle, we hope this is not bad Scotty. Jason Dash shows he's no wimp when it comes to hard footy. The Mug and Dinner for Two at Ashmont Hotel went to the big fellow Dick Carey, Brett Whyman the John Waring Endeavour award, the R.H. Blake to Joel (The lion heart) Mellen and the Club Cash to none other than our big ruckman Jamie Hubbard.

Out netballers went down fighting but are getting closer to that first big win. Sympathy to Tracey on the death of her grandmother. How good to see our local rag and our Record plastered with Rivcoll's injured. But NOT ONE picture of our boys taken from the field on stretchers, not to mention our player with a very bad concussion being advised by his doctor not to play for a few weeks. A fine picture is painted, the Demons are the big bad wolves of the Farrer. Well we were called a parochial crowd and one would think a 435 game life member would know better.

This week we travel to Coota, so let's keep the ball rolling towards two more wins. The Smoko morning is the 19th July at 11 a.m. at the Club. A men only event.

this week thank you to Bush & Campbell Ace and the Ashmont Butchery for their sponsorship.

Murrumbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc. • "FOOTY RECORD" - 1998

Last weeks travel out to the Gully didn't prove to be fruitful with both sides failing to put the points on the board. The Reserves couldn't repeat their first round win over Gullie, and showed some good patches of footy, but just couldn't stitch them together. Corey Grainger played his best game to date this year to win the K&J Trophies Mug. Others to perform well were Lee Matthews, the Mark Anthonys award and "Foxey" won the Thomas Blarney award.

The Ones showed again that three quarters ain't enough to win games of football against the better sides. The K&J Trophies Mug went to Darren Murphy, Brett McDonald and Mick Pedler both made good use of 1 O beer tickets each courtesy of the Palm & Pawn and Col "I think I shall sleep now Judas" Maguire took out the Farmers Home counter lunch.

Netball this week saw a Wednesday night game against the Gully with Stacey Hofert winning the Mug and Heidi Oakman also a winner. Saturday saw the girls again tackle Gullie with Viv Guy winning the Mug and Stacey Hofert the Palm & Pawn Beer tickets. To the girls credit both games were victories.

Don't forget the Mystery Bus tour this . weekend which is a fancy hat job, no hat a fine will be issued. Another one for the boys, the Annual Lobster trip, July 12th, Sunday after the Coota game.

Congratulations this week must be extended to Steven (Ryno) and Ruth on their engagement and their future addition to the Ryan clan. Also good to see is the return of one Paul "Reg the Bazza Mug Champ" Irvine. We're looking forward to Reg's commitment back at the Club.

This week we welcome the Pigs and their Sows to our home ground. Let's welcome the chance to play at home and the support from our followers and play some winning football and netball.

Thought for the day - when a Saint passes he goes to heaven, when a Pig passes they go to the butchers.
