Mysore, april 11: “I do notwant the access to highquality, high leverageeducation to be restricted toonly elite as it is today but bemade available to the poorestof the poor. Delivering the convocationaddress at 96th annualConvocation of the Universityof Mysore at Crawford Hall,the Infosys boss said that hewanted Indian schools anduniversities to becomeinspirational to children allover the world and wanted ourchildren to focus on problem-solving orientation to improvethe context rather than currentfocus on learning by rote.

Stating that the market will bethe ultimate decider of theefficiency of every school, hesaid that the only function ofthe government is to regulatethe quality of education bysetting standards by formingstandards committee

consisting of well proventeachers, academicians andparents who have a globaloutlook.

The Infosys Cheif , who saidthat a pay-per-performancesystem be implemented inevery school, added that thestudents should vote on thecompetence of teachersbased on certain attributesdecided across the countryby a regulatory body withwell-proven teachers,a d m i n i s t r a t o r s ,academicians and parentswho want their wards to

fulfil the aspirations in globallevel of excellence.

N.R.NarayanMurthy’s vision:Dwelling on his vision forprimary and secondaryeducation in India, he said thathe wanted India to go from its130th position in HDI in 2015to the top 10 by harnessingeducation through whichevery child should receive thebest help from teachers to riseto their best potentialcommensurate with his or hercapacity without beinghindered by financialconstraints.

Stating that the purpose ofeducation is to create acivilized society whereeverybody has equalopportunity to better his orher life, where every childhas food, shelter, health, careand education, a societywhere duties come beforerights, education is aboutassuming responsibility inthe society, responsibility toshow fairness to the lessfortunate to create a futurethat the posterity can beproud of and to fulfil thepromise that freedombrought us, he added.

He spoke on‘Improving School Education inIndia’ at the 100th lecture seriesorganized by the Universitywhere he called for certainchanges in the prevailingeducation system. He wasconferred with honorarydoctorate by the varsity. Hesuggested that public investmentshould be increased in theeducation system. According tohim, the investment in educationas of now is not at all adequateand political will is necessary torevamp the current educationsystem across the country.

Currently, the public expenditureon education in India is 2.8% ofthe GDP, while in the case ofother developing countries, it is3.5%. The developed countriesspend 5-6 percent of the GDPand the education system is verygood there.

The public education hasreached to all corners of thecountry, but they lack the muchrequired quality. Azim Premjisaid, “The public educationmust be strengthened. Creatingparallel private schools will notmake any difference, instead theexisting system needs to bemore active so that studentswho are deprived of this getaccess to education which isdecent enough for them.”

Wipro Chairman recalled thatour country has excellentpolicies and intentions, but theylack proper execution andgovernment must concentrate onthat. “The most developednations have grown this muchonly because they have realizedthe importance public educationand they have invested a hugeamount in their educationsystem. They do understand thefact for a society to function, thisis very critical,” he added.

Premji further expressed hisbelief in the new educationpolicy on which the governmentis working and said that it wouldprovide a better frameworkwhich would ultimatelystrengthen the educationsystem.

Concluding his speech, he said,“If the above challenges haveto be addressed, we need toinvest more in publiceducation.”

To keep its traditionsaliveand to train students in thecity of Mysore, AMS Academyof Martial Science) under theleadership of Kru Vikram isdoing a yeoman’s job Vikram M.N has been an internationalMuay Thai fighter and has wonmany awards and accolation.

Kru Vikram is the ChiefInstructor and TechnicalDirector of AMS with 22 yearsof martial art experience.

*In Thai, the literal meaning ofKru is teacher or instructor. AMuay Thai Kru is a Master ofMuay Thai who teaches newgenerations authentic Muay Thaitraditions and techniques.

How did you start martial art?

At 8 years old my father take meto see the movie “Enter theDragon” by Bruce Lee. It makea huge impact on me andafterward there is always apassion in me for martial arts.My father was concerned so hedoesn’t let me practice combatsport right then and there, at 15then he let me do it but with theemphasis on “don’t get hurt”,“you must perform well inschool and be academicallysound” mentality.

What do you think about thecurrent state of combat sportand the new Indian generationof fighters?

Common people these days arebeing over exposed to combatsport so much that they becomedesensitized to violence andbloodshed. There are all kinds oftournaments such as UFC,Boxing, MMA, Vale Tudo etc onsport channel all day long. Tothem it is all to normal now asjust another form ofentertainment and martial artitself has to become a part of thei n d u s t r y .For new Indian fighter there aremany newcomers and combatsport gyms are opened everywhere in the country. Many menand women. For most malemembers they are very eager tofight on stage or after they getmore confident they will be opento the idea of being in the ring.A month ago my gym members

bring back many medals in atournament. One member thoughgot overly excited and broke hisshoulder from swinging his fistinto the opponent elbow. He still

won in the end but it was a veryvery stupid mistake from his part.

It must come with good and badeffects to the sport. As a teacherand fighter yourself what is yourapproach toward these youngfighters?

My concept of fight is never aboutfighting for money. One muststrive for spiritual enlightenmentand self-discipline. Martial artsand combat sport can not onlydestroy but also heal thoughmeditation, breathing, medicine,healthy diet and healthy life style.I try to be a true teacher ratherthan just a gym trainer. But ofcourse at the end of the day theteacher can only guide thestudents to the paths and then theymust choose and live with theirchoices. Accumulating life lessonand knowledge is also an essentialpart of being a student of anydisciplines, not only martial art.

When and how did you manageto make combat sport into yourcareer?

I come from a three-generationteacher family so I was alwaysworking toward an academicteaching position. Born to be ateacher that’s who I am. For yearsI work as an engineering lecturein GTTC and as a projectmanager in Rolls RoyceAerospace. Combat sport is mypassion but it remained a sideactivity. I instructed a small MMAMuay Thai club in GTTC andattend training and tournamentsduring business travel oversea.Many of that small club’smembers become champions lateron. After 2015 when our facilitiesare fully equipped I could quit myjob and run AMS full time. Smile.

Beside martial art what are yourother interest?

My family. I used to cook for mywife a lot when I still work myday job, now not so much. I dowish I can cook for my familymore. Smile

But inside India only, thereis one village in Rajasthanstate (piplanti village),which not only embracesdaughters but has created atradition that benefits boththe local people and theplanet. This endearingvillage makes a conscious

effort to save girl childrenand the green cover at thesame time, by planting 111trees every time a girl isborn. A brilliant exercise ineco-feminism, this shouldinspire India and the rest ofthe world.

The village gathers as acommunity and plants 111fruit trees in honour of everynewborn female child.Village residents collect Rs.21,000 (350 USD) betweenthemselves and Rs.10,000

(167 USD) from the girl?sparents. This sum of Rs.31,000 (517 USD) is madeinto a 20-year fixed depositfor the girl

Parents are legally bound bya signed affidavit stating thattheir daughter will receiveproper education. Theaffidavit also mandates thatthe girl should be marriedonly after she reaches legalage and the trees planted afterher birth have been correctlylooked after. I am Vietnamese and I amstudying in Mysore, India.Since I came to Mysore, Irealized everywhere ismany homeless dogs.These have got their ownlife as locals except they donot have a house.

In Vietnam, we eat dog,that’s the true that maymake one having their hairon. But, we also do lovedogs, cats regardless theyare home-feed or homeless,not that like I only love petsand don’t care about thoseon the streets.

The street dogs in Mysorelearn to survive by nature,such as eating the left-overfood and fighting for theirneeds. I have observed howtwo packs of hounds nearmy house protecting theirland. I feel brotherhoodexists there between those

in the same pack and manyof them curved in my mindunforgettable images ofthose different lives. Someare strong, some are old,some are limb by accidentor battle, and some areskinny or covered withscabies. Whatever they are,it invokes heartily pathetic.

I wonder why do Mysore inparticular and India ingeneral have numeroushomeless-dogs? Have everpeople given much thoughtabout another life by theroad or it is human-livingitself more worthy toconcern about? What elsecan we do more for a betterworld if we are not ready togive our hand to anycreature needs our help?Anyway, entire creatures areequal.

On the occasion of AmbedkarJayanti 2016, which is to com-memorate the 125th birthday ofDr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar on14th of April, we have a glimpseat this great son of India, the fa-ther of Indian Constitution and hisimmense contributions for theequality of human beings of In-dia.Ambedkar Jayanti is celebratedwith great passion all over the In-dia where people happily com-memorate his memories for hisentire life attempt to bring to realan India with liberty, equality andfraternity. It was a big moment forthe people of India when he wasborn in the year 1891. In entireof his life, Dr. Ambedkar wasstruggling for the rights of humanas the greatest activist.
