The Translation Centre’s mission Established in 1994, agency governed by
European public law, with legal personality,
Has its own financial resources:
• payments from the agencies, offices and institutions in exchange for services provided,
Is managed by a Management Board and a Director.
MISSIONS
1st mission: meet the translation needs of the other decentralised Community agencies, institutions and bodies.
2nd mission: actively participate in the cooperation between the EU’s translation services by

Quality Assurance/Term Checkers
Purpose: to guarantee terminology consistency and to ensure
that terminology approved by EU Agencies is respected and
followed.
• Pre-translation stage: Identify and automatically mark terms
from a glossary in the document for translation.
• Translation stage: Automatic detection during translation
(active segment) of terms from a glossary + concordance tools
(allow to find terms in TMs or termbases).
• Reviewing stage: Automatic verification of the terminology
used in a bilingual document (translated with a CAT tool, for
example, SDL Trados Translator’s Workbench) against a particular
glossary.

The Centre’s role in
– Founding member in 1999, other institutions joined in 2002
– Tool manager (hosts IATE S&D Team)
– Member of the IATE Management Group (IMG) and its working groups
– Manages EU Agencies’ collections in IATE
– Promotes and hosts interinstitutional terminologists meetings at language level and regularly launches consultations on problematic terms
– Most agencies’ collections are in IATE
– Interinstitutional updates possible
– Some agencies’ collections protected, but collection at TL shall allow adding synonyms
– The Centre’s long term objective is to cover the terminology for all domains of the agencies and have them participate more actively in IATE (namely the national experts and Focal points)
– Advanced training has been organised for some of them and they will continue
CURRENT PERSPECTIVES
CURRENT PERSPECTIVES
• Foster cooperation with universities: trainees and agreements, as the EP is doing with the University of Mons
• Promote and extend the usage of IATE: widget made available for external partners
• Promote interinstitutional exchanges of staff to share best practices and broaden perspectives
• Promote the ECQA certificate for Terminology coordinators, some colleagues from the EP, EC and Centre are already certified
