Introduction

• What is gout? Gout is an illness that you would not like to have. My definition of gout is like having a bunch of needles between your joints with a strong gust of wind just blowing every which way a wind could flow at the joint that them needle’s are in. With just what little of comprehensive word to use when in agony, I suggest that you educate yourself when you have a gout attack. If possible that you have been diagnose with gout that you immediately find the proper management for this illness. This presentation is just a directory for gout and is written by Pita Lualemaga at California State University of Fresno. The presentation is to get a understanding what and how you should Manage Gout.

Signs and symptoms

• * Sustained high levels of uric acid in the blood is a common gout symptom (see causes of gout).

• * Presence of uric acid crystals in joint fluid (see diagnosis of gout).

• * Deposits of uric acid crystals around joints and other areas such as the ears.

• * Only one or two joints are affected (initially).

• * Common affected areas include the feet, ankles and the ball of the big toe.

• * Tenderness around an affected joint.

• * The skin around an affected joint is red, shiny and painful to touch - a common gout symptom (see gout pictures).

• * Moving the affected limb/s becomes painful.

• * Chronic gout can lead to decreased kidney function and kidney stones.

Hyperuricemiaanother name

for goutIn most cases, gout is associated with a condition known as hyperuricemia.

Hyperuricemia occurs when the blood contains raised levels of uric acid sustained over long periods. The kidneys process uric acid and excrete this through urine. When

uric acid levels become raised, the kidneys are unable to eliminate uric acid efficiently. In some cases, the cause of gout is not linked to hyperuricemia but to

kidney disease. Blood uric acid levels can arise when the kidney is not functioning properly. Whichever cause, the kidneys can become damaged when blood uric acid

levels are raised over long periods.

The body unable to eliminate uric acid, deposits a hardened crystallised form of uric acid (tophi) usually in the joints and skin. Within the joints, deposits can be made in

the joint fluid (synovial fluid) and joint lining (synovial lining).Common areas for these deposits are the ankles, feet and ball of the large toe. Less common areas of uric acid

deposits include the ears and eyes. Tophi, areas of hardened uric acid, may also be seen under the skin around the fingers and toes.

• “NSAID WORK BY BLOCKING THE COX (CYCLOOXYGENASE ENZYMES, WHICH ARE KEY MEDIATORS OF INFLAMMATION IN THE BODY. “ (Koshin)

SELF CARE GUIDELINE

• For acute attacks of gout, the following measures may be beneficial:• * Rest and elevate the affected joint, if possible.• * Apply ice packs for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.• * Take ibuprofen for relief of pain and inflammation (unless you

have a history of kidney disease or stomach ulcers).• * Avoid aspirin, as it can worsen the condition in some people.• * Apply hemorrhoid creams to the skin to temporarily reduce

inflammation.• After an acute attack, skin overlying the affected joint may peel and

shed. If this occurs on a toe joint, the area may be more likely to develop a fungal infection (athlete's foot). Keep the area dry and use an over-the-counter antifungal cream, such as terbinafine or clotrimazole.

Patients with a history of gout should consider the following:

• * Limit alcohol consumption to 2 drinks per day if you are a man and 1 drink per day if you are a woman.

• * Consume purine-neutralizing foods such as fresh fruits (especially cherries and strawberries), most vegetables, celery juice, and B-complex and C vitamins.

• * Drink an extra 4–5 glasses of water per day.• * Maintain a healthy weight.
