Who is eligible to take Finance 360? All business major students are eligible for this course.
What will you learn? The course begins with an overview of the insurance industry, including the operation, distribution of products and insurance regulations. You will learn how to read insurance policies including auto, homeowner, business, life and health insurance. Students will also pick up tips for insurance shopping. The course will teach you how to deal with employee benefits packages such as group life and health insurance and various retirement plans, and will direct you in integrating personal risk management plan into the financial planning process.
The course will teach you: 1. How to shop for your auto or life insurance through the internet; 2. How to read and understand your own insurance policies; 3. What you should do after a car accident or a fire; 4. What kind of job opportunities are available with an insurance company.

Theory and Practice of Personal Financial Planning
How does one apply their knowledge of insurance, investments, retirement planning, and estate planning to real-life situations that people face? In FIN 410 you will integrate your knowledge of these areas to develop a comprehensive personal financial plan. The course centers on a case study involving the Bedos, an emerging affluent family. Students work together in teams to develop a comprehensive personal financial plan for the Bedos. The course culminates in presentations of financial plans to a panel of leading financial planners in the local community.

Who can take FIN 410? For the Spring 2017 course offering, any business major who has successfully completed FIN 320 may take FIN 410. Optimally, students should complete Introduction to Investments (FIN 340), Principles of Insurance (FIN 360), and Retirement and Estate Planning (FIN 411) before taking FIN 410. Students who have not yet taken these courses are strongly encouraged to take as many of them as possible during the semester in which they take FIN 410.

In FIN 410 you will learn how to think as a personal financial planner. In today’s competitive financial services industry, clients demand comprehensive personal financial planning advice. Effectively developing comprehensive personal financial plans and professionally presenting such plans are integral roles of a personal financial planner. In FIN 410 you will learn how to master these techniques both verbally and in writing.
Course Description
The purpose of FIN 410 is for students to integrate and apply their knowledge of personal financial planning topics, as received through the curricula taught in Mihaylo’s CFP Board-registered personal financial planning program. In this course, students will develop a personal financial plan following the CFP Board’s six-step comprehensive financial planning process. Students will also learn how to effectively communicate with personal financial planning clients both orally and in writing.
FIN 415 (Formerly Math 390) Quantitative Theory of Interest
Course description
The theory of interest in both finite and continuous time; the use of various annuity
functions as a basis for reserving, valuation, pricing, duration, asset/liability management,
amortization schedules and measurement of fund performance; term structure of interest
rates.
This course is designed for business students interested in quantitative finance and actuarial
science students in the mathematics department. The course will prepare students for
Society of Actuaries Exam FM (Financial Mathematics).

The course covers major commercial property and liability insurance lines. This will include commercial
property, business income, general liability, workers compensation, business owner insurance and the
operation of property-liability insurers. The primary objective of this course is to study property and
liability at an advanced level on the following topics:
1. Contract analysis on private auto and homeowner insurance
2. Duties and roles of a corporate risk manager 3. Features of major property and liability insurance lines and the
scope and limitations of major contracts
4. Functions and operations of property and liability insurers
5. Current issues and trends on property and liability insurance and regulatory issues
How the course will help you:
Class work and field trips will provide students with an understanding of risk management in property and
liability insurance. The course is intended to equip students for careers with property and liability insurance
companies, large corporations with risk management departments, insurance brokers specializing in commercial
insurance, or with entrepreneurs interested in managing business risk. This course will aid agents or
employees in insurance companies to pass their CPCU exam or CIC exam. Students completing this course who receive a “B” or higher may receive a waiver of one of the eight parts of the CPCU program (CPCU 557— Survey of Commercial Insurance) through The Institutes Collegiate Studies for CPCU Program. By taking this
course students will also become eligible to apply for insurance scholarships, such as the Mercury Insurance,
Pacific Life Insurance, and other CIS Insurance Scholarships. Finally, the group project will expose students
to local business owners and insurance brokers, and give them the opportunity to gain hands-on experience
with insurance professionals.

health insurance products and to evaluate relevant contracts. Major employee benefit plans adopted by corporations are also discussed. In addition, the organization and management of
life and health insurance companies are analyzed and explained. The primary objective of this course is to study life and health insurance at an advanced level in regard to the following topics:
1. Types of life, annuity, and health insurance products;
2. Uses of life insurance in personal financial planning;
3. Selection and uses of health insurance;
4. Types and evaluation of employee benefit plans;
5. Organization, management, and regulation of life and health insurers;
6. Current issues and trends in life and health insurance and regulatory issues.
The course will help equip students for a career in insurance with a life insurance company,
health care organization, or an insurance broker specializing in life and health insurance. This course will also be helpful to those agents or employees in insurance companies who are
planning to take the relevant CPL or LOMA exams in order to obtain their professional certificate.

Finance 551 – Seminar in Real Estate Investment Analysis
Classes will be held Monday from 7:00 – 9:45pm in SGMH 2405
Taught by Professor Wayne Foss, DBA, MAI, CRE, this seminar will provide you with an introduction to the real estate investment process. Topics will include basics of the investment decision, application of financial leverage, development of cash flow statements and valuation.

Course Description: The course is the application of the basic risk management principles to all risks facing
an enterprise. Since the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley-Act of 2002, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is becoming a very important issue to all firms. The course presents the ERM framework which integrates hazard (pure), financial, strategic and operational risks. There are seven building blocks discussed for developing an ERM program so that it becomes a tool to maximize firm value. In addition, the legal and regulatory environment, technical tools and future prediction on ERM are covered. The lectures consist of three components including organizational issues, risk analytics and a case study. The primary objective of this course is to study Enterprise Risk Management at an advanced level on the following topics: • ERM Concept and Framework • ERM Process • Risk Categories and Identification • Risk Modeling and Aggregation of Risk • Risk Measures • Risk Management Tools and Techniques • Economic Capital
