Fouling challenge under low activity

• Generally fouling control products are formulated for consistent

antifouling performance under trading conditions.

• Unlikely be as effective in periods of lower activity and

significant static periods.

• Majority of fouling occurs when vessels are below ~5-6 knots and

significant static periods are a major risk.

• Macro fouling (weed and animal fouling) can result in 25% to

80% increase in drag on the vessel1

Antifouling schemes• Antifouling schemes are related to vessel speed, activity and the intended in service period i.e.

36 months, 60 months etc.

• Not guaranteed to cover prolonged static periods due to the formation of a leached layer (or

depletion layer) at the surface of the antifouling.

• This is a layer from which the biocide has already released into the sea water. During normal

trading, this leached layer polishes / dissolves off with the movement of the sea water exposing

“fresh” antifouling coating.

• However, when static or slow moving, this layer builds up and effectively seals the active

antifouling and prevents the release of enough biocide to stop fouling.

• Foul release systems will also suffer from fouling under static conditions.

• Pro-active - solutions at dry dock:• Faster polishing systems are available that are designed to

perform under static / low activity:

o Deviation from the scheme design (increased speed / activity),

risks early polish through.

o Typically high DFT and can be expensive.

o Requires prior knowledge of expected low activity / static.

o Outfitting antifouling's available for NB.

• For long static periods, accept that cleaning will be required and

specify extra DFT to accommodate cleans (biocidal):

o Practicality of cleaning (location and invasive species).

• Selection of products that have shown good performance under

low activity / static conditions:

o Requires independent performance data.6

• Re-active - solutions in service:• Regular inspection and cleaning when required (hull grooming):

o DFT loss via cleaning, potential to reduce scheme life.

o Practicality of cleaning (location and invasive species).

o Damage to foul release systems from contact cleaning methods.

o Damage to hull coatings if fouling left to mature before cleaning.

• For longer static periods, particularly in high fouling challenge locations,

a short period of sailing every 1-2 week(s):

o For both biocidal & foul release.

o Typically 10-12 knots for 4-6 hours.

o Practical?

o No guarantee that fouling will be prevented.

o Product guarantee still likely invalid (activity levels).7
