Whatchagonnado?

• Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2006Folks, I'm trying to find any policies online posted by Academic/College libraries on use of or blocking of sites like MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, and the like.  Our library has no policy currently and we're seriously considering the impact the use of such sites is having on our students' ability to use the computers in the library for academic work. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I'm currently looking on the ACRL website as well as tracking down a few websites my manager has found.

Technology - School Library 2.0

“Redefining the school library is not a response to some inherent failure on the part of the institution. It's an opportunity for library professionals to engage in some exciting activities that will enable our institutions to remain effective in the midst of fast-moving technological change. It was school libraries, in fact, that led the way in the first wave that brought computers and then the Internet into our classrooms. This is about adapting, once again, to a new, perhaps even more compelling digital revolution, in which powerful new ideas are enhancing the way in which we function in an electronic information environment.” SLJ, May 2006 p50.

Teaching as a subversive activity (Postman & Weingartner)

• avoid telling students what they "ought to know"; • talk to students mostly by questioning, and especially by

asking divergent questions; • do not accept short, simple answers to questions; • encourage students to interact directly with one another,

and avoid judging what is said in student interactions; • do not summarize students' discussion; • do not plan the exact direction of their lessons in

advance; allow it to develop in response to students' interests;

• pose problems to students; • gauge student success by change in students' inquiry

behaviors (with the above characteristics of "good learners" as a goal).

The Balance

How do you draw students in, make them feel welcome, stimulate their intellect, and satisfy their curiosity while maintaining an atmosphere of mutual respect, study, and collegiality?
