Jim is an Associate with Kasian Architecture, responsible for quality control, contract

administration and specifications. Prior to joining Kasian, Jim was one of the project

managers for the Pearson Airport Redevelopment project.

He is a former instructor at Ryerson University and George Brown College, teaching

courses in project management, specifications, building codes and construction law.

Jim is also lecturer in the OAA registration course for architects.

Clive has a wide experience in the construction industry, having worked as a

superintendent, estimator, and project manager.

Clive owned and operated a small construction company in Toronto for twelve years.

He held the position of By-Law/Building Official with the City of Brampton, and was

the Chief Building Official for Prince Edward County before accepting the position of

President of the Ontario General Contractors Association. His duties include

promoting the industry, facilitating disputes between project partners, promoting

education, providing advice on contracts and the supplementary conditions attached to

them.

Clive has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Daily Commercial News, and

Building Advisory Committee at the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and housing.

Glenn Ackerley is a partner with WeirFoulds LLP. Glenn represents clients from across the construction industry—including

public and private owners, developers, contractors, subtrades, suppliers, and consultants—in a variety of construction-related

matters, including construction lien and trust claims, and deficiency and delay claims in both the ICI and residential sectors.

He regularly advises on project structures, construction and consultant contracts, procurement issues, and risk-avoidance

strategies, often in the role of the ―project lawyer‖.

Glenn has been listed as a leading construction law practitioner in the Canadian Legal LEXPERT Directory and Best Lawyers

in Canada, and is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers. He is Vice-Chairman - Finance of the Board of

the Toronto Construction Association, and is actively involved in numerous industry committees such as the Construction

Matt Ainley’s career has spanned over 30 years in the construction industry including 26 years with Vanbots Construction

Corporation. Matt joined Vanbots in 1985, became a shareholder in 1995, and held progressive positions within the company

including Superintendent, Chief Estimator, Executive Vice President and as well as President & COO for 10 years.

With his Management Team, Matt led the growth of the company from a small southern Ontario construction firm with $35

million in annual revenues to a national firm with revenues over $750 million. Notable projects completed include the

Crystals for the Royal Ontario Museum, the Schulich School of Business for York University and Honda Canada’s new

corporate offices. In 2008, the company was sold to Carillion Canada, where Matt went on to hold the position of Executive

Vice President until early 2011.

Matt has been an active member of the construction industry as a Board member of the Ontario General Contractors

Association since 1998 and its Chairman in 2007. He has also been a guest lecturer at Ryerson, George Brown and the

University of Toronto. He lives in Toronto with his wife of 28 years, Susan, and their two sons Trevor and Erik.

Geza R. Banfai joined the national firm of Heenan Blaikie LLP in August 2009, after many years as chair of the construction

law practice at another Toronto firm. He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Construction

Law, is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers, and is listed in both Lexpert and Best Lawyers in Canada.

In his extensive construction law practice, he has represented participants at every level of the construction pyramid, from

negotiating and drafting construction and related contracts (including alliance and joint venture agreements, and P3 and

similar lender-driven arrangements) to claims and disputes of many kinds.

He is director of the Canadian Construction Association, and formerly a director of Consulting Engineers of Ontario and

Toronto Construction Association

In addition, he is a member of the Construction Law and ADR Sections of the Ontario Bar Association, the Forum on the

Dražen Bulat is a Partner in the Toronto office and National Leader of Miller Thomson's Construction and Infrastructure

Group.

The focus of Mr. Bulat’s practice is on the development and drafting of ―front end‖ procurement and construction

documents, including tender documents, RFPs and different forms of contracts. He is intimately familiar with the law of

procurement as well as the Construction Lien Act, and represents both owners and contractors/vendors in working out

Mark Casaletto, V.P. and General Manager for Reed Construction Data Canada (RCD) has over 15 years leadership

experience in the industry. He is an active speaker at industry events providing insight and intelligence on the state and

economics of the Canadian construction industry.

Mark is a Ryerson University graduate in business management with a minor in economics. Upon graduation in the early 90’s

he joined Southam Inc and was involved in the development of key electronic products which were being introduced in the

first generation of the internet. He moved on to Embanet Corporation where he later served as Director of sales and

marketing. At Embanet he helped lead the company to become a global leader in providing online learning solutions working

closely with such respected institutions such as the Johns Hopkins University and Boston University.

Matthew Nicholas received his B.Sc.(B.E) from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 1979 and later earned his M.Eng. in

Construction Management from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada

Matthew has extensive experience in project planning and control, claims analysis and management, and construction dispute

avoidance and resolution. He has developed work breakdown structures and prepared, monitored, and updated computer-

based CPM schedules for a wide variety of construction projects, including the $4.4 billion Airport Development Project at

Lester B. Pearson International Airport.

He has also analyzed and defended against claims for delay, impact, and inefficiency, in the course of providing claim and

litigation support to contractors, subcontractors, public and private sector owners and their legal counsel.

Matthew has lectured on planning and scheduling and dispute resolution at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University

Les has been a litigation counsel with the firm of WeirFoulds LLP since 1974, and has been involved since that time in

Born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario, Dan enjoyed a dynamic and varied career in the construction industry.

His experience in the field of civil engineering later led to subdivision design and development and sales management.

In early 1979, Dan joined the team at CSAO (Construction Safety Association of Ontario), as a field consultant and in 1982

was promoted to supervisor. He subsequently held positions as manager of Program Development and Training & Advisory

manager.

With his remarkably solid background in planning and accomplishment in the field of construction safety, Dan has achieved

his next dream: the formation of his management consulting business - Construction Safety Solutions Inc.

Prior to joining Kasian, Michael was a partner with Mill & Ross Architects Inc. where he was employed for over 20 years, as

an accredited architectural technologist.

Michael has been responsible for project resource allocation for, and production of working drawings, manuals and technical

specifications and contract documents. As a project manager on many significant health care projects, Michael coordinated

multi disciplinary consultant teams.

His experience from the proposal stage, through design, contract document preparation, tendering, contract administration,

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

After more than 20 years in private practice as an architect, Paul Sandori joined Revay and Associates more than a decade

ago. Founded in 1970, Revay has been offering project management and claims resolution services in Toronto, Montreal,

Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver, as well as in the United States. As a senior consultant with Revay, Paul has investigated

building failures, deficiencies and contract administration disputes on a number of major buildings, acted as expert witness in

numerous lawsuits, and successfully mediated or arbitrated many construction disputes.

Paul is a member of the Ontario Association of Architects and of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and an elected

Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He is editor of the ―Construction Law Letter‖, for 25 years the leading

source of legal information for the construction industry.

Paul is the author of an internationally recognized book on the science of mechanics, as well as a co-author (with Bill Pigott)

of a book on the law of tendering in Canada, now in its fourth edition. In 1996, he received from the Ontario Building

Envelope Council the President’s Award of Merit and, more recently, the designation Building Science Specialist, Ontario.

Howard Wise is a partner at Goodmans. He heads Goodmans’ construction law group and is a member of the infrastructure

renewal and procurement group. He specializes in the areas of construction law and commercial litigation.

Howard is retained as counsel by owners, general contractors, subcontractors, material suppliers and lenders in large

construction disputes, including construction liens, contract claims and negligence claims. Howard’s litigation practice includes

trial and appellate work, as well as mediation and arbitration of construction disputes. He has also acted for owners and

contractors in negotiating complex construction contracts including design build agreements and EPC contracts. He is

regularly retained to act in large multi-partied disputes, including acting for owners, general contractors, subcontractors,

financiers and design professionals.

Howard is the author of the Manual of Construction Law published by Carswell and co-author of Bristow, Glaholt, Reynolds

and Wise on Construction, Builders’ and Mechanics’ Liens in Canada (7th edition), the leading text in the area of

construction lien law. He is a contributing author to a textbook entitled Construction Disputes: Representing the

Contractor, published by Aspen Publications, New York. Howard is also the contributing editor of Canadian Forms &

Precedents: Construction Liens, published by Butterworths.
