Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) was set up on May 2nd 1963 for facilitating foreign trade research and training. The Institute in the last 52 years has evolved and transformed into a distinguished academic centre in the domain of International Business Education. It has emerged as an internationally networked institution not only committed towards delivering globally competitive education, but also as a prestigious training and research centre. IIFT conducts elite educational programs of MBA in International Business, part time MBA in International Business for working professionals, Executive Post-Graduate Diploma in International Business, Certificate Courses on Export Management, Capital and Financial Markets and Global Trade Logistics and Operations.
IIFT today is a centre of excellence for Executive Development Programme in International Business, and it is perceived as an established knowledge resource base catering to the needs of managers and executives at all levels drawn from the Government, Public Sectors and Corporate both on the national and as well as international canvas.
Objectives & Activities IIFT was set up with the following objectives: Impart professional education in modern management

THE MSME CENTRE Keeping in view that the MSME sector
would continue to play a crucial role in our globalizing economy towards national development, the institute had setup the MSME centre in May 2005 in order to provide continuous support to the MSME sector by carrying out activities which can be classified into conducting Training Programs, provision of Business Intelligence services through comprehensive information hub and acting as a catalyst for interfacing with other concerned and associated institutions and organizations. It had signed a MoU with Microsoft India to jointly develop a portal, which is an online information hub, catering to the need of Indian SMEs exporting their products. The MSME Centre has been working very closely with Himachal Government to establish Shimla Centre. The centre will help promote exports from MSME units of the State by maintaining Capacity Development Program, Export Advisory Program, up gradation of trade support services, introduction of 'Benefits of Exporting Campaign' targeting potential exporters and Market Information Services.
Centre for International Trade in Technology (CITT)
Through financial and technical support from the DSIR, Government of India, IIFT set up CITT in 2001 with the prime objective of actualizing India's potential in technology trade and addressing the complexities involved. It is a unique institutional arrangement in which roles of active players in international technology trade, especially those of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Ministry of Science and Technology are being synthesized. It is well recognized that building up of technology trade requires sustained effort over a period of time.
Centre for WTO Studies The Centre for WTO Studies was
established in IIFT in 2002 to provide research, analytical and informational support pertaining to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to the Department of Commerce, Government of India on a continuous basis. Over the years, the Centre has undertaken detailed research on various issues including agriculture, industrial tariffs, trade remedies, trade facilitation etc., which has provided a strong foundation for India's engagement at the WTO. The Centre has also provided significant technical support to the Department of Commerce in various WTO disputes. In addition, the Centre has undertaken cutting edge research on some of the emerging areas of international trade such as climate change. Indian Institute of Foreign Trade has an illustrious legacy as a Centre of Excellence in terms of imparting training and conducting research regarding business across the globe.
Research Indian Institute of Foreign Trade has always emphasized
on strong and pervasive interface between research and training. With
over 700 research studies and surveys, research holds a special place in
institute's spectrum of activities. The analysis of international business
situations and development of appropriate corporate strategies has been
the outcome of substantial consulting capacity of the institute. World
and nationwide renowned institutions such as RBI, FICCI, CII, FIEO,
CID, QCI-Harvard University, European Union Office, USAID, UNDP,
ESCAP, Commonwealth Secretariat, German Development Institute,
IFC-World Bank, Central and State Governments of India have
consulted IIFT on various occasions. IIFT has worked in close
association with prominent organizations like WTO, World Bank,
UNCTAD and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry for undertaking
path breaking research studies.
The Centre for Regional Trade (CRT), an autonomous Think-Tank, has been established recently by the Department of
Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. CRT is mandated to focus on policy-oriented research while viewing India's economic engagements with the global economy through a regional lens. Broad areas of research, capacity building and outreach programmes cover Trade in Goods, Trade in Services, Investment, Technology and developmental issues.
Centre for Trade and Investment Law .The Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL) has been set up in the year 2016 by the
Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. The Centre’s primary objective is to provide sound and rigorous analysis of legal issues pertaining to international trade and investment law. The Centre aims to be a thought leader in the various domains of international economic law such as the WTO law, investment law, and legal issues relating to economic integration. CTIL’s mission is to identify, analyse and provide creative ideas and perspectives to influence the international discourse on a wide ranging aspects of International Economic Law. The Centre aims to engage with different stakeholders including central and state governments, think tanks, research centres, National Law Schools and other institutions rendering legal education international economic law, independent legal professionals, industry, and private sector. The Centre is also conceived as a ready repository of trade and investment related information including updates on ongoing trade negotiations and disputes.

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) is the pioneer Institute in Executive Capacity
Building Programs and has been shaping up a plethora of executives for more than 52
years.
In its journey IIFT has constantly been the ‘think tank’ for the Government in various
functional areas and specialised verticals and has been imparting well-structured
academic knowledge on Foreign Trade and International Business Management.
Today, it has emerged as a knowledge resource division catering to the needs of
managers and executives at all levels drawn from the corporate, government and public
sectors both in India and abroad.
The first training program was hosted by IIFT in December, 1964 for senior executives
from Ministry of commerce, Trade commissioners’ Office, Government Trading
Corporations, etc. The topic was “Techniques of International Marketing” and the
duration was four months.

The Institute offers number of MDPs of varying duration throughout the year that are open to working executives from all organizations. The areas in which these open programs are offered are broadly categorized as International Marketing, International Trade Operations and Logistics, International Finance, WTO and Trade Policy, IT for Management and skill Enhancement Programs.
IIFT has emerged as the nodal Institute for conducting need based training program being attended by executives from various ministries, State Governments, Public Sector Units, Export Promotion Organizations and Private Sector Industries. IIFT has conducted sponsored programs for government officials belonging to all-India services Indian like Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Economic Service, Indian Trade Service, Indian Revenue Service, Indian Statistical Service etc. The Institute also conducts Special Programs/Seminar on the WTO and the New Trade Regime and the WTO & Allied Issues, etc. for IAS Officers/State Level Officials.
Online certificate program in Export Import Business – “Niryat Bandhu @Your Desktop”. IIFT has been identified as a
nodal agency for conducting Capacity Building Program for IEC holders/Entrepreneurs in collaboration with DGFT
under the Niryat Bandhu Scheme. The official launch of the program ‘Niryat Bandhu @ Your Desktop’ and IIFT
webpage on Niryat Bandhu @ Your Desktop was conducted at the hands of Commerce Secretary Ms Rita A Teaotia,
IAS, in Sept. 2015. It is an online 20 weekday sessions program with direct to desktop delivery mode. IIFT has
successfully completed 27 batches and one batch in Hindi.

In 2014, Govt. of India launched Niryat Bandhu Scheme under which IIFT was recognized as a knowledge partner and assigned to conduct a series of training programs for budding exporters & entrepreneurs.
Methodology of program: 40 hours program (2 hours each day, from 6-8 PM, Monday to Friday) taught via online mode by eminent IIFT faculty, Industry experts and DGFT officers.
