— Stephen Johnston, Principal Term 1, Week 8 • 20th March 2020

Welcome to week 8. As the end of the term comes rushing forward, all the news is about Covid-19.

Covid-19

I have sent out a couple of emails to update whanau about Covid-19. I don’t want to repeat what was in those emails, but I do want to let you know what we are doing.

I think the first thing to keep in mind is, there has been no community spread in New Zealand. All cases have come from overseas. The Ministry of Education (MoE) and Ministry of Health (MoH) are providing the school with excellent information, which we are following very carefully.

It is vital that children with any sickness remain home.

It doesn’t matter if the symptoms match Covid-19 or not. This season we need to be very careful around all sickness, not just Covid-19, because of the strain on staffing and health services.

It would also be very helpful for us, if you could provide more details about the symptoms your child is showing when off sick.

Communication

I will use the email addresses that is on the school system to send you updates. Please make sure that we have your current email address. If you have not received an email from me about Covid-19, we do not have your email on our system. Please contact the office.

If we need to contact you urgently, we will send out a text and notification on the school app. More details will then be posted on the school website and emailed.

Please be assured that I will be in immediate contact if the situation changes or we have a case at this school.

What has changed

During this time, and in accord with the advice we are receiving from the MoE and MoH, gatherings of 500 people or more have been cancelled or postponed.

Off-site sports events have been cancelled.

We have stopped school assemblies, as we can not provide a 1.5m space between students that the MoE is requiring during assemblies.

All classrooms and appropriate handwashing facilities. Washing hands with soap is the best option.

In the meantime, all other school events, activities and programmes of learning are progressing as normal.

Kapa Haka

I have been very pleased and proud to see the increase in the number of students stepping forward and having a go at Kapa Haka this year. Matua Jordyn tells me that there are over 80 students in the squad now and I can certainly hear the passion and pride as they rehearse in the hall, from my office.

We welcome Whaea Rangiatea and Whaea Tawai, who joins us as our new Kapa Haka instructors, who have joined Matua Jordyn this year. We are excited to see what you will do with our tamariki.

Our students showed great pride and respect, as they performed for Rotary a couple of weeks ago, at very short notice, after another school was unable to perform. Well done to our staff and students for making this happen and doing such a great job. The feedback from Rotary was excellent.
