Mana with Mana
Mana College was established in 1957 as the first secondary school in the Porirua Basin and today continues to serve the
communities of Takapuwahia, Elsdon, and Titahi Bay. The school’s name and land was gifted by Ngati Toa kaumatua, as was
the motto, ‘Akona te mahi pai’ which means ‘learn to do the good thing’. As a result the college values its special relationship
with local iwi and is fully aware of its significant responsibility regarding guardianship of mana whenua, tikanga a iwi and cultural
history. The roll currently comprises 67% Maori, 18% Pasifika, 3% Asian and 10% New Zealand European. An enrolment scheme
was adopted in 2019.
The College benefits from its proximity to the harbour and hills and is characterised by strong sporting involvement, noticeable
influence from churches and secular groups and a strong sense of identity and resilience. Mana College is proud of the
relationships fostered with learners, parents, whanau, hapu, iwi and community and strives to strengthen these partnerships to
enable equitable outcomes for all young people and families.
The term ‘Mana with Mana’ is the vision statement of the College, emphasising the history and whakapapa of the school.
‘Mana with Mana’ demands that we stand with respect, fully aware of our place, others and ourselves.
The College is committed to providing a responsive, place based and personalised curriculum in order to meet the needs of
each student at the school. The local curriculum is based on our learner profile, the New Zealand Curriculum and Te
Marautanga o Aotearoa. Critical thinking, collaborative inquiry and learning to learn are a vital part of our school experience
as well as a wide range of sporting, cultural and recreational opportunities. These opportunities fully involve staff, family and
our community. Whānau are able to choose tikanga Māori for their tamariki through placement in our ‘E Tipu e Rea’
programme.
