Miguel de Cervantes Cervantes lived from

1547-1616, and died the same day as Shakespeare. He wrote his novel Don Quixote in two parts. The first was published in 1605 and the second in 1615.

derived from the Moorish words for “parched earth.” Windmills were built to irrigate this dry, desert-like landscape for the olive harvest and wine industry.

To tilt at windmills-

To fight enemies that are either imaginary or

unimportant, or perhaps simply misunderstood. To “tilt” refers to jousting, as Don Quixote did with the

windmill. This English idiom (expression) comes from the

novel Don Quixote.
