Malvern has been a hub of activity this fall. Our early registration for students was very successful and our cur- rent registration stands at about 985 students. Thanks to our partnership with our parents, staff, Peer Leaders and 55 Division officers the many safety measures we put into place in Septem- ber resulted in an opening week free of any hazing inci- dents for our incoming Grade 9 students. Our new students have told me that they felt welcomed and safe as they started their new journey at Malvern. I am pleased to announce the addition of several new staff members this year at Mal- vern. Welcome to Lisa DiViesti (Science) Basil El-Wazani (Business/ Geography), Jenna Grzela (Guidance), Shahnaz Khan (ACL for English/ Literacy), Janine Romeiko (History/French) and Vice Principal Kimberly Woods who is responsible for students from A to L. Welcome back to Jane Fontes and Mark Steel who are returning to Malvern from parental leaves. Con- gratulations to all of our out- standing and dedicated staff members who work very hard with all of our students on a daily basis. They are truly making a difference with your son or daughter! Once again Malvern had some very successful clubs and teams this fall as well as numerous activities to promote school spirit. The Grade 9 Co- Curricular Fair/ BBQ and Elec- tions, Lunchtime Intramurals, Terry Fox Run, Frosh Week Activities, Halloween Costume Contest and Halloween Dance are just some of the many ac- tivities that have taken place in the last several weeks. Under the direction of Ms Gage the Leadership Council continues to help coordinate and plan Malvern’s numerous extra cur- ricular activities. A sincere thank you goes out to all of our coaches and athletes who par- ticipated in our fall sports sea- son. The following are just some of the many highlights of our fall season: Our Girls Ten- nis Team coached by Ms Fon- tes and Ms Hunnisett had a very promising season and the Boys Tennis Team members coached by Ms Blackmore were Regional Finalists. Ms Zhu led both our Girls Junior Basketball members who made it to the playoffs and members of the Girls Senior Basketball team who were Regional Champions! Both Boys Junior and Senior Soccer Teams coached by Mr. Evans and Mr. Mlilo made it to the playoffs. Our Co-Ed Golf season led by Mr. Wood had a very promising season. Coached by Mr. Underwood our Boys Junior and Senior Rugby 7’s Teams had great seasons and the Boys Bantam Rugby 7’s members were City Champs! Our Girls Field Hockey teams continued to display their dominance on the field. Coached by Ms Gage, Ms O’Brien and Ms Grzela our Girls Tier 2 Field Hockey Team mem- bers were Regional Champs and our Girls Field Hockey Tier 1 team members were not only Regional Champions but OFSAA Competitors as well! Our Boys Varsity Football Team members coached by Mr. Salvatore and Mr. Underwood were Regional Finalists. Finally our Co-Ed Cross Country Team members under the leadership of Ms Tyrell and Ms Barsby were Re- gional Boys Champions and 16 members of the team went on to OFSAA competition! What great accomplishments by Mal- vern athletes and coaches! We are very proud of all of you! The highlight of our fall activi- ties is without a doubt our third Red and Black Day held on October 7 th involving almost all of our staff and students as well as many alumni who joined us for the festivities. Mother Nature smiled upon us with beautiful weather and it was a huge honour for me to ride once again in a special Delorean and to be escorted by our officers from 55 Division as well as our talented and re- nowned Cheerleaders and Marching Band as well as our spirited staff and students fol- lowing behind in our school colours. What a great day it was in the warm sun cheering on our field hockey, soccer and football teams as they played at Birchmount Stadium. Thanks to everyone who helped make this an unforgettable day for our entire school community! The long awaited Rededication of Malvern’s War Memorial was held on Friday November 4 th in front of the school. This cere- mony was the result of years of fundraising and months of planning. politicians, members of the media as well as all of our students in Grade 10 who study World War 1 and their History teachers. Although I was very sad to write to you that the War Memorial was vandal-ized less than 30 hours after its rededica-tion I am pleased to report to you that our community, generous donors and the TDSB have rallied together and we have secured sufficient funds to install new lighting, security cameras and other fea-tures to pay for the damage that was in-curred. Many thanks to key committee members Nickie Lewis, Fran Perkins, David Fuller, Mike Izzo, Erich Lehrer, Laura McLeod, Sheila Cary-Meagher, Greg McKinnon, Irene Hubel, Leslie Rose, Sue Maltby and Cindy Fuller and our tireless chair Vandra Masemann who devoted countless hours to see this project to completion. Anyone with information on the vandalism to our War Memorial is urged to call 55 Division at 416-808-5500 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477). They can also re-

port tips online at www.222tips.com. They can text TOR and their message to CRIMES (274637) or leave a tip on Face-book at http://www.facebook.com/TorontoPolice. On November 11th Malvern marked Re-membrance Day with 2 inspiring assem-blies attended by all our students. Thanks to Mr. Izzo for his leadership in organizing all the details of these excellent presenta-tions and to our Malvern Red and Black Society President Vandra Masemann for her excellent speech on the “Boys of Mal-vern” who lost their lives during World War I. The speech can be found on the school website. Congratulations as well to our Leadership Council and Leadership class students who organized a special poppy drive this year and raised $1,300.00 for local veterans. Each month we recognize a different char-acter attribute as part of the TDSB Char-acter Development Program. Staff mem-bers select a student who best exempli-

fies this particular quality. Congratula-tions to our student of the month recipi-ents Marcus Robinson (Respect) for Sep-tember and Bliss Gatenby (Responsibility) for October. More information on Charac-ter Development can be found at www.tdsb.on.ca/character. Finally, I would like to sincerely thank the many generous parents who assisted our Home and School Council under the lead-ership of Helen Coombe and Sharon Grieve with donations of food and refresh-ments to make our November 11th Com-mencement a great celebration for all involved. Students have received their Term 1 re-port card with this newsletter. The upcom-ing Parent/ Teacher interviews are an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have about your child’s progress. I hope you are able to attend. Best Wishes for a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!

Well, we couldn’t have asked for better weather, that’s for sure. Temperatures in the high 20’s. If you could believe it, one student actually complained that the walk along the High Line “would have been better if it had-n’t been so sunny.” In any case, the weather certainly made our extensive walks waaay more comfortable than they would have been just a week prior when the winds and rain were howling. It was a great trip and our students got to see some amazing sights as well as some of the world’s most famous works of art. The high point of the trip was most likely seeing the Broadway play, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Try-ing, starring Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame. And, getting back to the previously men-tioned High Line: for those of you who have not heard of it, it is an elevated park that meanders along what used to be a railway line that serviced much of the lower west end of Manhattan. It is certainly a unique approach to urban parks and one that To-ronto’s next generation of decision-makers could benefit from experiencing. I hope to put a slide show of our trip on the school website, so keep your eyes open for that in the near future. And, for students currently

in grade 9 or 10, keep in mind that we will most likely plan another such trip for Fall of 2013. Announcements will be made in early 2013. Back at Malvern, the display cases are now full of new art works by this year’s students. Have a look around if you come to visit the school. Also, I’ve had a special guest in my class on Wednesdays: Malvern alumnus Hannah Browne graduated from Ryerson in Fash-ion Technology this spring and is now gain-ing experience she hopes will help in her quest to become a teacher. She has been an invaluable source of help in my Media Arts classes in particular, where she can share her expertise in Flash and Photo-shop. She has also been very helpful by keeping our display cases up to date. And, finally, the Malvern Art Club is also quite active with students who will be working on jewellery and silk screen print-ing. They meet Mondays in room 207 and, of course, anyone is welcome to join.

As reported on the School Climate web-site, Malvern is experiencing some is-sues of vandalism both inside and out-side the school. Staff have been re-quested to closely monitor students out of class and enforce the hall-pass sys-tem. Vandalism impacts all of us and Malvern appreciates parents and guardi-ans reminding their learners about this. The Malvern School Climate Council will be calling a meeting shortly to discuss this as well as other issues of concern in the community in early December. The meeting will also set dates and key top-ics for the February Social Justice Con-ference. All are invited to attend this meeting. Check out www.malvernschoolclimate.com for more information shortly.

Malvern Field Hockey teams continue to dominate in the South. For the fifth con-secutive year, we fielded Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams, with 40 girls making up the total roster. The program welcomed a dozen new faces to our Tier 2 team who finished in 2nd place after league play, suffering their only loss of the season to Riverdale 1-0. These girls breezed through the play-offs defeating UTS 4-0, Garneau 1-0 and the final was a thrilling 2-0 victory against Harbord! This team had an awesome season and we are really excited to see the skill level and intensity that the girls will bring to the team next year. The Tier 1 team suffered only a single loss throughout their season, against an extremely strong side from North Toronto. We finished 2nd in league, behind N.T., earned a bye to the semis where we fought off East York 2-0 to play against our nemesis from North Toronto, in the regional final. After regulation & one over-time period the score was tied 1-1 so we went to the next stage of OT, penalty flicks. THIS IS CATHARINE MACKEIGAN’S SPECIALTY! Our awesome goalie held up her end of things and Ali, Maddy and Mar-gaux all scored for Malvern…final score 4-1. Our next step was fighting our way

through the City Championships and go-ing to OFSAA. The team defeated Sir John A. MacDonald 2-0, Earl Haig 7-0 and once again, met up with none other than North Toronto for the City Championship. Al-most a carbon copy game of the Regional Final, the game was scoreless throughout regulation and OT, once again forcing penalty flicks. Although N.T. scored first, Margaux, Abi and Maddy sealed our 3-1 victory burying their flicks deep within the net. This is the 3rd consecutive year that the team has competed at the Provincial championships, an accomplishment not shared by many. Thank you & farewell to our graduates

who have dedicated four years to our teams: Julisa Cummins, Kelsey Grieve, Carolyn Tait, Cassidy Timlin, Margaux Daly, Ali Quinn, Janet Tait, Camille La-rouche, Abi Moody, Naomi Nishimura, Jamie Porter, Lauren Weber, Zoe Martin & Catharine Mackeigan.

Field Hockey Teams Regional & City Champs!

Junior Boys The Junior Boys’ Soccer team was lead by par-ent coach Steve Robin-son. They had a record of 3-3-3. They lost in the semi-finals to Lea-side 4-2. It was a close game. Goal scor-ers were Sam Gardiner and Adrian Apple-waite. Next year promises a strong team as most of the players will be returning to the junior team next year.

Senior Boys The Senior Boys’ Soccer team was lead by parent coach John Seeley. They had a record of 3-3-1. They lost in the quarter-finals 3-1 to Marc Garneau with Sam Moodie being the only goal scorer. Next year will have a strong team as most play-ers will be returning.

This year’s Cross Country team had many successes beginning with the Peter Morris Invitational Meet and had continued success at the City Championships. The Junior Girls, Senior

Girls, and Senior Boys all finished in the top three and advanced to OFSAA along with Nick Morrow. Mother Nature was not on our side this season, and the runners had to deal with a lot of rain and heavy winds. The team welcomed the following runners: Gavin Vanelsberg, Michael Church Carson, Alex Taylor, Gabrielle Arbic Lloyd, and Petra Seglins. As we welcome our newest participants, we would like to wish the best of luck to the following runners who will be graduating this year: Kai Groves, Adam Varro, An-drew Edmunds, Max Russo, Emma Finley, Ali Seglins, Adrianna So, Eileen Church Carson, and Gabrielle Terry. Great season everyone!

The Peer Leaders led by Super Co-Captains Catharine MacKeigan and Dylan Ciccarelli, welcomed the Grade 9s with the traditional Grade 9 Day activities. This was a great opportunity for the Grade 9s to familiarize themselves with the school and the Peer Leaders. The Peer Leaders were also there during the week in the Grade 9 Home Forms to provide assis-tance and to answer any questions. We hope that all the Grade 9s know that the Peer Leaders are here to help them in any way that they can.
