REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS

MALE - Testosterone Seminal Vesicle Vas Deferens Prostate Gland Penis Urethra Foreskin Bulbo-Urethral Gland (Cowper’s Gland) Testicle Scrotum

MALE (cont.) Seminal Vesicle

Attached to Vas Deferens Located near the base of the Bladder Secretes a fluid that

mixes with the

sperm to provide

mobility and

nourishment

MALE (cont.) Vas Deferens

A tube approximately 18 inches long Carries sperm to the Seminal Vesicle

MALE (cont.) Prostate Gland

Secretes the fluid that mixes with sperm to form Semen

MALE (cont.) Urethra

Connects with the Bladder as well as the Vas Deferens

Releases Urine OR Semen Not both simultaneously!!!!!!

MALE (cont.) Bulbo-Urethral Gland (Cowper’s Gland)

Fluid Producing

MALE (cont.) Testicle (Testes)

2 Small Glands Sperm producing Gland Contains several 100 yards of

coiled sperm Normal adult male produces 200 million sperm a

day 500 sperm lined up would only measure 1 inch!

MALE (cont.) Scrotum

Holds the Testicles Keeps Testes at a temperature slightly below the

normal body temp. of 98.6 degrees As body temp. increases the Scrotum lowers

(muscles relax) As body temp. decreases the Scrotum raises

and the Testes pull in (muscles contract) CLOTHING CAN BE A RISK!!!!!

MALE (cont.) Epididymis

Larger tube that joins the Testes A temporary storage facility for

Sperm Is where Sperm will mature

MALE (cont.) Sperm Cell

MALE (cont.) Ejaculation

About 300-400 million Sperm in each Ejaculation One spoonful of Semen contains 100-500 Million

Sperm

Vasectomy Cutting of the Vas Deferens

Prevents the Sperm from reaching the Seminal Vesicle to mix with the fluid

MALE (cont.) Sterility

Sperm is weak, malformed or unable to join the egg cell Causes:

Temperature changes Exposure to certain chemicals Mumps as an Adult STD’s Testicular and Prostate Cancer (pg. 441)

CANCER OF THE TESTES – AT RISK AGE-GROUP IS

15-35!!!!!! That means you guys!!!

FEMALE – Estrogen & Progesterone

Fallopian Tubes Ovaries Uterus Cervix Vagina

FEMALE (cont.) Ovary

Are a PAIR (2) Contains the eggs All eggs are in place at the

time of birth Born with over

1 million IMMATURE egg cells

FEMALE (cont.) Fallopian Tubes

Are a PAIR (2) Takes the egg to the Uterus

FEMALE (cont.) Cervix

Neck of the Uterus

FEMALE (cont.) Uterus

Pear shaped organ About the size of

your fist Where fertilized eggs

grow

When the egg is

released the lining of the uterus begins to thicken preparing for fertilization

FEMALE (cont.) Vagina

Birth Canal A muscular, very elastic tube that serves as a

passage way to the Uterus

Tubal (Ectopic) Pregnancy Egg implants itself in the Fallopian Tube Egg is likely present during the middle of the

Female’s monthly cycle

Ectopic Pregnancy

FEMALE (cont.) Ovulation

Can occur more than once per month

Menstruation Change in hormone levels can interrupt or

extend the cycle Time – more or less than 28 days (average) Prolonged menstrual flow can decrease a

woman’s iron level
