Yes, the wind howls and the rain always seems to pelt down right on drop off and pick up, but the children all tend to really hit their straps in Term 3 and there are so many wonderful community events to look forward to. Parents often tell me that Makybe is known as the ‘academic’ school, but I like to think that Term 3 is one long series of events that show that Makybe is committed to growing the whole child through sports, visual arts, performing arts, student leadership and entrepreneurialism. At Makybe, our children have many opportunities to shine. I am very pleased to confirm that Makybe students from Years 4 - 6 will again have the opportunity to embrace their inner entrepreneur and throw themselves into the Illuminate:nextgen Challenge! Makybe led a world first event last year and the children’s resilience, creativity and passion for creating a better future really blew our socks off! We can’t wait to see what they are capable of in Week 9’s challenge. Expressions of interest will be out soon. Also during the last weeks of term, children will try out for our amazing Fully SIC Performance Festival! Audition lines are always long with young hopefuls keen to show their very own brand of awesome! Please encourage your child to have a go. Our annual Spelling Bee will be on again, and this year, we are also introducing a Makybe Maths Facts Challenge! Class and cohort rounds will be completed in the last few weeks of term with the grand finales held during Week 10’s ‘Commit to Student Success Week’. Open Night is always such a special time at Makybe Rise and a key feature of ‘Commit to Student Success Week’. The school will close at 1pm with all students going home early, and will then re-open from 3 - 6pm for open classrooms, specialist class events, the Sunset on the Rise Art Exhibition, Fully SIC performances and parent voting, and, this year, for the very first time, a Makybe community Wellness Fair with over 40 service providers and businesses on display. Term 3 is all about getting physically active with three school athletics carnivals, State Cross Country and swimming lessons! Our Athletics carnivals are very special events for our community and we really love the huge parent turnout to support our kids and their Tribes as they give athletics a red hot go. We have all our fingers and toes crossed that the weather will smile nicely upon us and thank you in advance for your patience if we need to defer a day due to wind or rain. Save the Date: I would like to encourage parents to book in to attend a presentation from our Student Leaders about bullying on Thursday, 7 September. This week, our children have laughed and learned along with the ‘Mad Scientists’ during their Science incursions. I am very pleased to report that the Mad Scientist has told us our school was one of the best they have been to, and they were impressed with how respecƞul and well mannered our students were! Such lovely feedback to receive. Steph McDonald Principal Principal’s Message

We have been keeping very busy in Room 2 this term. We have been reading a story called ‘The Monster’s Party’. We made our own monsters by blowing paint across the paper then had our own monster party and made jelly cups! We have also been working hard learning our alphabet and sounds. In Maths, we compared our hands to a gorillas hand to see who had the bigger hand! In between all this learning we are playing nicely and enjoying each others company! Jo Hartley Classroom Teacher

Keeping Up With Kindy in Room 2

This term in Room 29 we have been learning about Area and Perimeter, the Industrial Revolu on and the First Fleet. Last term, all the Year 4 classes went on an excursion for HaSS to visit the Duy en Replica and the Mari me Museum in Fremantle. All the Year 4’s loved it and Room 29 found out some very useful informa on. Ever since then, Room 29 have been falling in love with this subject! Recently we have been learning about the Industrial Revolu on and really enjoyed doing the ac vi es to extend our learning. We did a compare and contrast note taking ac vity on modern life and 18th Century England, we compared our life to Mary Trimble who was a child who worked in the mines, then we wrote a paragraph about Mary’s life and did a Philosophical Chairs ac vity discussing whether life was be er before the Industrial Revolu on. Life was much quieter before the Industrial Revolu on, but we couldn’t imagine living without technology! In Maths, we have all adapted our learning and have become more confident doing tricky math problems and a lot of people have been comple ng much more work! Wri en by Charlo e D and Leikyn P

Growth Mindset Mathema cal Mindsets: Memorising Informa on

If you expect a child to just remember a fact, their level of thinking and understanding will not be deep enough to apply it to different contexts. Therefore, ‘one of the very best things we can do for students is to help them develop mathematical mindsets, whereby they believe that mathematics is about thinking, sense making, big ideas, and connections - not about the memorisation of methods’ (Boaler, 2016, p.47).
