“If I were in the British Government I would declare the London Sinfonietta a National Treasure. … Long may they continue to make music!”Steve Reich

Welcome to the London Sinfonietta’s 2011/12 Music Programme.

I hope you are excited and inspired by the mix of events we are producing this year – from explorations of the music of established masters to compelling new voices and experimental collaborations. Live music is still one of the most powerful experiences. Add to that the anticipation of the new and unusual, and I hope you will choose to come to several of our events this year. For 43 years we have been commissioning and performing new music, and this season is no exception. The range of new work from Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Dai Fujikura, Bryn Harrison and Martin Creed is a reflection of the diverse styles in new music today and the wider world of contemporary culture that we are now part of. We are also making new music with composers through our Writing the Future and Blue Touch Paper schemes (page 12) and work from them will be presented online and in live performance throughout the season. Our London Sinfonietta Academy enters its fourth year providing a summer course and main-stage work for the best emerging UK players throughout the season.

A creative partnership with the public is a central part of our mission as we make new music together with people of different ages and abilities. Our growing London Sinfonietta Collective (page 14) is a group of people interested in creating new work with us, and I encourage you to take the step and join in.

We are hugely grateful to Arts Council England for their trust in us. The recent confirmation of their continued support means we can plan our Music Programme through to 2015. We are also grateful to trusts, sponsors, promoters and individuals without whose help and partnership we would not survive. You can help us make new music happen by becoming one of our Pioneers (page 18).

I look forward to meeting you at our concerts at Southbank Centre where our ongoing residency provides a fantastic home for the ensemble.

Pierre Boulez Anthèmes 2Pierre Boulez …explosante-fixe…

Péter Eötvös conductorClio Gould violinMichael Cox fluteSound Intermedia sound projectionJérémie Henrot IRCAM sound engineerCarlo Laurenzi IRCAM computer production

A solo violinist stands on a stage and plays. As she plays, the music is transformed into cascades of sound which spin around the space, enveloping the audience using live electronics and a spatial speaker system. Anthèmes 2 is a product of IRCAM, Pierre Boulez’s Paris-based underground centre for the research and development of music technology. …explosante-fixe…, also created at IRCAM, is a flute concerto in which the live electronic transformation of the soloist’s sound is played over a large ensemble. The flute interacts with an advanced computer system to control how the sound is shaped and transformed, resulting in music of scurrying energy and often luxuriant beauty.

Thierry Fischer conductor

Wolfgang Rihm is one of the most prolific composers working today, writing a huge range of music and often revisiting and revising earlier pieces and ideas. Nach-Schrift of 2004 is connected to his earlier ‘chiffre’ cycle from the 1980’s when he was exploring his compositional style, and Will Sound More Again is a recently extended and reworked version of a piece from 2006, full of energy and immediate appeal. Rihm’s music in this concert is set against that of two of his most celebrated pupils – Rebecca Saunders’ haunting Quartet and Jörg Widmann’s Dubairiche Tänze, a set of dances with echoes of the composer’s native Bavaria, coloured by his inventive compositional voice.

The event includes Hommage à Klaus Nomi, a cabaret-style tribute to the eponymous Berlin tenor and theatrical visionary. The concert also features …miramondo multiplo… for solo trumpet, “a skilfully joined, shimmering realm of random memory tableaux, where you meet, for example, Miles Davis, Berg, Mahler, Messiaen and even Handel.” (Stefan Musil, Die Presse)

The London Sinfonietta’s long association with British composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle continues with an event which will uncover his musical language, featuring examples from earlier works and including the UK premiere of his latest composition for the ensemble, In Broken Images based on a poem by Robert Graves of the same name. The first half will be an on-stage introduction to the music led by music writer Tom Service in conversation with Sir Harrison Birtwistle and illustrated with musical extracts played live by the London Sinfonietta. Once you’ve gained an insight into how the legendary composer thinks about his music, the London Sinfonietta will then perform a selection of compelling works which encapsulate some of the most important elements of his compositional style.

making new music now is the London Sinfonietta’s platform where exceptional composers, performers and conductors can experiment with new ideas, forge creative partnerships, share expertise and produce the most innovative and inspirational projects in the London Sinfonietta’s repertoire.

CommissionsThe London Sinfonietta continues its rich tradition of commissions in the 2011/12 Music Programme with new works from Sir Harrison Birtwistle (the ensemble composition In Broken Images), Dai Fujikura (his Double Bass Concerto), Bryn Harrison (a composition for installation with digital artist Tim Head) and artist Martin Creed (a new work as part of his collaborative evening in June, see page 10). We welcome support for these commissions through our Pioneers scheme (see page 18).

Blue Touch PaperThe 2011/12 Music Programme sees the next phase of the London Sinfonietta’s groundbreaking Blue Touch Paper programme. Nurturing and promoting the next generation of inventive partnerships, the programme gives composers and collaborators the chance to develop new works with the London Sinfonietta. So far this next generation of Blue Touch Paper associates includes composers, writers, poets, visual artists and scientists. Three new works created on the programme will be performed at a preview event in Spring 2012. Keep an eye on londonsinfonietta.org.uk for the latest news.

Blue Touch Paper is delivered in partnership with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation with support from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Participants are supported by a Jerwood Blue Touch Paper Bursary.

Writing the FutureWriting the Future encourages and supports the best new music by inviting composers to work closely with London Sinfonietta musicians as they make new music. Writing the Future works are given their public premieres by the ensemble (see event on page 4) and all works are actively promoted as part of the scheme. Following their world premieres, recordings are streamed online with scores available to download. Current Writing the Future composers include Shiva Feshareki, Edmund Finnis, Tim Hodgkinson, Isambard Khroustaliov, Duncan MacLeod and Michael Mayhew.

Writing the Future is generously supported by The Boltini Trust, The John S Cohen Foundation, Anthony Mackintosh and Michael and Patricia McLaren Turner.

London Sinfonietta AcademyThe London Sinfonietta Academy is an opportunity for the UK's finest young musicians, conductors and composers to come together and further their performance experience and training. An intensive week-long course every July offers rehearsals, masterclasses, workshops and lectures around the specialism of performing contemporary classical music. Each course focuses on core pieces of contemporary repertoire plus a new commission, with sessions led by London Sinfonietta Principal players alongside world-renowned composers and scholars.

Full details of the audition process for the London Sinfonietta Academy 2012 will be posted online in November 2011.

The London Sinfonietta Academy is generously supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, The Fenton Arts Trust, Leo and Regina Hepner, Musicians Benevolent Fund and The Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation.

London Sinfonietta Academy AlumniThe London Sinfonietta Academy Alumni is composed of the growing number of London Sinfonietta Academy participants who have trained alongside the London Sinfonietta’s Principal players. Following a performance at the 2011 BBC Proms with a portrait of Graham Fitkin’s music, the group continues to give emerging talented musicians the chance to perform in the London Sinfonietta’s world-class Music Programme. The London Sinfonietta also works closely with educational institutions across the UK, and in October 2011 members of the Royal Northern College of Music join with the ensemble to perform Larry Goves’s Things that are blue, things that are white and things that are black as part of Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
