T!' 12 THE TORRANCE HERALD MAY 13, 1962 VOLUNTEERS AT WORK Phones in Red Cross Office Among the Busiest in Town One of the busiest tele- phones in town is at the Tor- iance-Lomita Red Cross head- quarters, 1617 Cabrillo Ave., mnd it's a trained volunteer staff aide who does the an- swering. The friendly voice saying, American Red Cross. May I help you?" may be that of Mrs. M. Zupparde, Mrs. Ernest Erickson. Miss Gertrude Murri- son, Mrs. Lela Terry. Mrs. Penny Ward. Mrs. Betty Turn- er, or one of the others work- ing as staff aides under chair- can. Mrs. Andrew K. Craig. The calls that come in range from "My brother is in serv- ice, our mother is dying, how can he get an emergency leave?" to requests for donor appointments at bloodmobiles. » VOLUNTEERS who cope with these problems have been recruited from community- minded women who are will- ing to devote a few hours each week to assist Red Cross. The trouble is there aren't enough of us," says Mrs. Zupparde who has worked regularly for more than four years in this vol- unteer capacity. "Besides being a good out- let and offering me an oppor- tunity to keep up my typing skills, as a staff aide 1 have the happy satisfaction of be- ing a volunteer with an organi- zation that really trusts me and gives me the latitude to do a job. Both Red Cross and the people seeking assistance are counting on me so I feel my three hours a week at the branch office Is time well spent" THE WORK has its humor- ous side, too. One call recently was from a woman wanting a pair of Red Cross shoes size 11-D. The staff aide had diffi- culty explaining that the Amer- ican Red Cross had no connec- tion with the shoe brand of the same name. Mrs. Zupparde. like the other regulars on Mrs. Craig's that crew, works a three hour shift once a week. The duties of staff aides in- clude light typing, some filing, but chiefly the job focuses around answering the tele- phone and being a receptionist for the branch headquarters. One of the busiest tele- phones in town is at the Tor- iance-Lomita Red Cross head- quarters, 1617 Cabrillo Ave., mnd it's a trained volunteer staff aide who does the an- swering.

The friendly voice saying, American Red Cross. May I help you?" may be that of Mrs.

The calls that come in range from "My brother is in serv- ice, our mother is dying, how

can he get an emergency leave?" to requests for donorappointments at bloodmobiles.

    » VOLUNTEERS who cope

with these problems have been recruited from community- minded women who are will- ing to devote a few hours each week to assist Red Cross.

"Working as a staff aide is wonderfully rewarding.

Both Red Cross and the people seeking assistance are counting on me so I feel my three hours a week at the branch office Is time well spent"

    THE WORK has its humor-

ous side, too.
