To Our Rockstar Legal Intern On Her First Year At Law School This past year the Rossen Law Firm had future rockstar lawyer Deborah Caputo as a legal intern. Deborah was a big asset to our team, and we know she is going to kill it in law school. Since she is a true Floridian who has never even seen snow, she decided to stay local and is set to attend Nova University Law School this fall, and we know she is going to kick butt. Deborah comes from a Brazillian and Italian family, which means she knows great food. When we aren’t working on a case or busy running from one hearing to the next, you could always count on her daily coffee runs to keep us going. That’s why those close to her like to joke that “Deborah runs on Dunkin.” I think she has coffee in her blood! Deborah’s main passion for the law is helping human and sex trafficking victims. She will be an amazing advocate for these victims since she always sticks up for the little guy and isn’t afraid to speak the truth. She was drawn to the firm because she genuinely believed that bad things can and do happen to good people. She has really enjoyed helping our clients this past year and learning how a law firm runs. 1 —continued on page 3 Make GOOD Things Happen A Rossen Law Firm Publication August 2019 Volume 3 Issue 8 0172 Jason B. Be Hurricane Ready!

Visit RossenLawFirm.com/Hurricane to see our full hurricane prep

checklist!

Ryan Mathwich, a born and raised Plantation, Florida resident, has dedicated eight years of his life serving as a firefighter/paramedic. When Ryan isn’t out fighting fires and saving lives, he’s running Plantation Pools, his very successful pool servicing company. Ryan, a former lifeguard of six years, was inspired to start Plantation Pools because of his love of the water.

Since Ryan is accustomed to Florida weather, he knows the dangers that homeowners with pools face during hurricane season. Ryan says the best thing you can do to protect your pool during a hurricane is to slightly drain it. Contrary to popular belief, do not put your patio furniture in the pool since that will cause rust on the pool finish. Luckily Ryan is an expert in removing rust from pool finishes.

Plantation Pools caters to over 40 residential pools per week and is also certified to care for commercial pools. We are lucky to have Plantation Pools as a valuable part of our team should any pool related issue arise.

For more information on Plantation Pools, check out their website at www.plantationpoolsllc.com

We take pride in caring for every pool as if it were our own.

We offer swimming pool/spa servicing maintenance, repairs,

installation, and equipment.

Have a question for Adam about tackling a difficult situation – legal or otherwise?

We’d love to hear from you! Write to us at [email protected]

“One thing I loved about working here was the rare, familial culture in a fast-paced legal environment,” says Deborah.

I asked Deborah what she was most worried about in her first year of law school, considering I wrote some tips for law school in this month’s playbook. Deborah told me that the only thing she is worried about is mentally holding herself back. I am confident that won’t happen. She promised me that she's going to give law school her all and crush the competition!

Deborah, we are so grateful to have had you as our legal intern this past year, and we truly wish you the best in your legal endeavors. You’re going to be very hard to replace, and we hope you come back during breaks from school!

Slow and steady wins the ‘A’ in law schoolIt’s that time of year again. We know how stressful the unknown can be, especially for those starting their first year of law school. Here are my top 3 tips for surviving law school.

1. Slow and steady wins the race.

Did you ever hear the story of the tortoise and the hare growing up? Law school is very similar. It is a marathon, not a sprint. You can easily get burnt out if you try to do too much work in the beginning. I often compare law school to the movie The Hunger Games. It’s every person for themselves and there’s fierce competition. Your main focus should be on the cumulative effects of good study habits. A little bit every day will have you more prepared than an all night studying binge.

2. Grades are overrated.

In law school, everyone around you is competitive but you’re graded on a curve. My school, the University of Miami, graded its curve on a “C” average. For every 100 students, only 3 “A’s” were given out. It’s not the end of the world if you get a C in law school. Don’t think of it as a failure. Continue to learn the material and apply it in new ways. Don’t psych yourself out, everything will be okay.

3. Put yourself out there and get involved.

You’ll never know if you like a specific field of law unless you give it a try. If you think you want to be a trial lawyer then join the trial team. You may love it, you may hate it but keep an open mindset. Think about the following example. Let's say you were an immigrant that decided to attend law school. Does that mean you’ll possess a passion for helping others with their immigration issues? Well, why don’t you dive into an internship at an immigration law firm to see if you enjoy it? The more areas of law you try, the more likely it is that you will find an area that you are passionate about practicing.

This reminds me of an old saying I heard during my 1L year.

"The A students become law professors, the B students become judges and the C students become successful lawyers."

I won't tell you what my grades were but I'm definitely not a law

professor or a judge!
